And there the Devil was waiting to put him to the test. What was the test? As we know, three devilish possibilities were offered to Christ. Jesus was offered three shortcuts: First. When He was hungry, bread out of stones. That was the offer of miraculous powers for self-interest, using exceptional powers to satisfy His own cravings. Secondly, when He needed to take risks, angels to keep him safe. That was the offer that the ordinary rules of gravity would be suspended just for Him! He could even jump off the Temple roof and land safely! Thirdly, when He wanted to change the world, absolute political power. That was the offer of dia-bolical power, which would continue the historical cycle of division and violence. They were the Temptations of Christ. And His answer? ‘I will persevere in the ordinary way, believing that what was revealed in a special way at my baptism is true. I am precious and loved by my Heavenly Father. I don’t need special demonstrations of that. I just need to integrate that belief into everything I do, everything that happens to me. Each of us at our baptism heard the same words as did Christ. In the depths of our hearts, at the core of our emerging personalities, we heard, ‘You are my beloved son.’ ‘You are my beloved daughter.’ ‘In you I am well pleased.’ But, as with Christ, this will not insulate us from the difficulties and hardships of persevering and trying to live with those words guiding us on the journey. Which means that you and I can expect, have experienced, temptations. During Lent, we can keep an eye out for these situations. But it cannot happen without some familiarity with the Scriptures. Jesus resisted each temptation with: ‘It is written’. The forty days of Lent are a perfect opportunity to tackle some study of Scripture, to become familiar with the episodes and pattern of the life of Jesus Christ. And then we simply try to imitate Christ. As Pope Francis says in The Joy of the Gospel (264) ‘The best incentive for sharing the Gospel comes from contemplating it with love, lingering over its pages and reading it with the heart.’ Find what is written. GOSPEL: Matthew 4:1-11

Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

It is Written Jesus had a great mystical experience at his baptism. What was His reaction going to be? Perhaps to set up a monastery like the Essenes who produced the Dead Sea Scrolls? Perhaps straight back to the workshop at Nazareth? No. Listen to what happened. Jesus was driven by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, into the wasteland on the margins of society. Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Prevention and Protection Policy. In 2014, Archbishop Mark launched the new Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Prevision and Protection Policy. The central message of the Policy is grounded in the policy statement:

The Archdiocese of Brisbane holds that children, young people and vulnerable adults are a gift from God with an intrinsic right to dignity of life, respect and security from physical and emotional harm.

They are to be treasured, nurtured and safeguarded by all.

This means that everyone in the church must ensure that the fundamental rights of children, young people and vulnerable adults are respected. This will be achieved through the development of respectful relationships and a commitment to safety, embracing appropriate boundaries, behaviours and practices, in accordance with the Archdiocesan Code of Ethical Behaviour and adherence to legislative imperatives of the State.

To meet this commitment, our parish will be required to fulfil a number of compliance matters. Some of these have already been put in place; however your support is needed to ensure that our parish meets all

requirements of the policy implementation.

PROJECT COMPASSION Living in the Philippines, Dinia

struggled daily with poverty in a country with many vulnerable communities. People living in rural and coastal areas have very little access to basic

services. They face extreme weather events, environmental degradation and the effects of internal conflict and have

little hope of a sustainable income.

For Dinia, the untimely death of her husband meant an end to his small income and a greater struggle to feed and educate her children. Her community encouraged her to participate in the Socio Pastoral Action Centre Foundation Inc. (SPACFI) program supported by Caritas Australia. She was able to learn about organic farming, managing livestock,

and start a small business.

Now she has an integral role in her community, a sustainable livelihood, and a brighter future for her children.

“My life is much better now. It is

much easier,” she says.
