Climatic Types

Climatic Types

• Equatorial*

• Monsoon*

• Cool Temperate*

• Dry

• Warm Temperate

• Polar

• Highland

*Only equatorial climate, monsoon climate and cool temperate climate is in the syllabus of 2914

Equatorial

Climate

Where is it located?

• Between 10°N and 10°S

Characteristics

• High temperature (Mean annual

temperature is around 27°C)

– Why? Because of the high angle of

incidence of the sun’s ray, therefore, sun

rays are concentrated at a smaller area,

so the temperature is high

• Small annual temperature

range(Around 2°C to 3°C)

• High relative humidity (more than

80% throughout the year)

• Experiences conventional rainfall

– Because of the high temperature, causing water to

evaporate quickly to form clouds

• High rainfall of more than 2000mm

• No distinct wet or dry season

Examples

• Singapore

• Malaysia

• Indonesia

Monsoon

Climate

Where is it located?

• Between 5°N and 25°N

• Between 5°S and 25°S

Characteristics

• High temperature(Not as high as

the temperature in equatorial

climate)

– Why? Because places experiencing

monsoon climate is further away

from the equator, so the angle of

incidence of the sun rays is not as

high as the equator. Therefore, the

sun rays are concentrated over a

relatively larger area, so

temperature is not as high as the

equator.

Example

• Chittagong, Bangladesh

• Mumbai, India

• Bangkok, Thailand

Cool Temperate

Climate

Where is it located?

• Between 45°N and 60°N

• Between 45°S and 60°S

Examples

• Paris, France

• Vancouver, Canada

• Tasmania, Australia
