General conditions

FixingFixing materials of all types must as a minimum comply with national requirements and standards .

Only approved fixing elements may be used and they must be suitable for the individual installation – e .g . suitable for fixing to concrete, wood, etc .Each suspension point in ceiling constructions must be rated to withstand a load of at least 1 .5 times the rated load of the rail system .

Use only lock nuts .

If a lock nut is fitted on Fischers FAZ anchors, the Fischer product liability is not complied with; if the customer requires this, Loctite or simular must be used instead .

All bolts and nuts are tightened with torque in accordance with applicable rules – M10 = 42 Nm .Hilti HUS-H screws tightens with a torque of 35 Nm .

Important!User Guide for GH3 is a supplement to this installation guide . The user of this installation guide should note that the fixing devices are those recommended by Guldmann and constitute minimum requirements .

When selecting fixing elements, the installer must in each individual situation take the ceiling and wall constructions into consideration .V . Guldmann A/S shall not be held liable beyond its normal product liability unless V . Guldmann A/S installers carried out the installation work .

ReservationsThe warranty shall not cover defects or damage which can be attributed to causes other than defects in workmanship and materials .For the warranty to apply any repair work must have been undertaken by the Guldmann Service Team or other service technicians/repairers recommended by Guldmann .

Product liabilityIn relation to product liability the current rules under Danish law shall apply . The Seller shall never be held liable for operating losses, loss of earnings and other indirect losses .Product liability insurance which includes cover against injury and property damage has been taken out .Any disputes between the parties shall be settled by the Maritime and Commercial Court in Copenhagen (Sø- og Handelsretten) in pursuance of Danish law .

Testing the rail systemTest the rail system following setup in accordance with the control table, see page 72 .The rail system has to be load tested for at least 20 minutes, with a load of 1 .5 x its rated load . The entire rail system has to be loadtested .The selected brackets must be loadtested for at least 5 minutes . If there are less than four brackets in the rail system, testing time per bracket must be increased .Where different fixing element are used to install the system, or where the building construction have been changed, the system must be tested in each of these situations .Each section of the rail system must be regarded as an individually sytem and be tested and marked individually .

NoteThe rail system must be tested in order to ensure that it is 100% safe and stable in use .If it is considered necessary or in cases of doubt, the system must be tested again to the extent that this is appropriate .

General conditions

Installation in corrosive surroundingsSpecial guidelines must be observed when installing the rail system around swimming pools, etc .The surfaces of the brackets used, traverse travelling trolleys, etc ., must be painted . Hoists must be supplied with a special surface treatment .All fixing elements, nuts, washers, threaded rods, must be acid-proof .Acid-proof threaded rods and dual-component adhesive must be used for installation in concrete, tiles, etc .Through-going threaded rods or acid-proof screws must be used for installation in wood .Particular care should be taken to avoid damaging the surface of painted components .Washers made of synthetic material must be used in between painted surfaces and nuts and ordinary washers .

Damaged paint must be repaired after installation, and visible threaded rods, nuts, washers, etc ., must be covered with paint .Hidden threaded rods, nuts, washers, and brackets in the rail track must be treated with a silicone coating .Wherever possible, nuts must be fitted with protective caps .There must be no swarf, dirt, or other impurities in the rail system as they will accumulate moisture and lead to corrosion .Bearings in traverse travelling trolleys must be treated with a silicone coating before installation .

Note! GH3 rails with charging liners must not be used in corrosive or dusty surroundings (areas around swimming pools and at riding schools) .Quality designation for bolts, etc .A4/AISI 316 = acid-proofA2/AISI 304/rustproof 18 .8 = not acid-proof

Placing a new Hoist in an existing rail system. Please notice, before placing a new hoist in an existing rail system it must be ensured that:• The rated max load of the rail system, must be equal or

higher than the max load of the new hoist .• If there is no max load mentioned on the rail system, it

must then be checked according to the guideline in the installation manual (distance between bracket according to max . load)

• If the brackets are not visible, then a load test with 1 .5 x max load of the hoist must be performed . The deflection of rails must not be higher than 1/200 .

• If it is not possible to do any of the above mentioned, please contact Guldmann or their representative

• If the rail system can not be rated to the same max . load as the hoist, then there must be installed some extra brackets according to the installation manual (distance between bracket according to max load)

Installing heavy duty rail systemsBracket types must be chosen in accordance with the list of components, certain types of bracket must not be used in connection with these installations .A heavy duty model traverse travelling trolley must be used in connection with room-covering rail systems rated over 500 kg (1100 lbs) .

The mutual distance between brackets must be adapted to the type of rail in question in accordance with the instructions . Two installation elements, a glue anchor or expansion bolts must be used per bracket when installing the system in a concrete ceiling or wall, in accordance with the instructions .Ceilings and walls made of materials other than concrete must be carefully inspected and tested for suitability .Special care should be taken when testing at 1 .5 x it’s rated load .

Rail systems in general

A rail system comprises one or more rails, which are installed on the ceiling, the wall or on freestanding wall studs .

The rail system is constructed in modules . This makes it easy to create individual solutions and to adapt the system to existing buildings . The modules are easy to handle during fitting and transport . The flexible modules also make the system suitable for recirculation .Rail systems can be installed anywhere . Private homes,

hospitals, nursing homes, therapy clinics, riding centres and swimming pools are just some of the places where a rail system can help to improve the working environment for carers and heighten the quality of life for the disabled .

A ceiling hoist system takes up no floor space, makes little noise and is always ready for use.

The room-covering rail system

The room-covering rail system comprises two parallel rails installed on the ceiling, the wall or on freestanding wall studs . A traverse rail runs between the parallel rails . The hoist itself glides backwards and forwards on the underside of the traverse rail in a travelling trolley, which is equipped with wheels that run inside the rail . Horizontal movement is smooth and comfortable for the user .

The room-covering system makes it possible to lift the user to and from any place in the room and is the optimum solution in rooms where many lifts are carried out .

Installing a room-covering system saves space and provides an extremely high degree of freedom . The bed, a wheelchair and the other furniture in the room can be placed as desired and lifting can be carried out rapidly, easily and comfortably both with regard to the carer and the disabled person .

In addition the planner has considerable freedom to design the rooms in the building – both because the system saves space and because it offers flexibility when lifting a person .

In some cases the parallel rails can be built into the ceiling so that only the lower part of them is visible .

The single-track rail system

In its basic form the single-track rail system comprises a single rail in which the ceiling hoist runs . The system can be extended with curves of various angles .

The single-track system is very suitable for moving a per-son over longer distances . Examples of this could be cor-ridors, riding schools or swimming pools .

Over and above this the single-track system can be used in the same situations and rooms as the room-covering system . Attention should be paid to the fact that wheel-chairs, beds and other aid facilities must be located direct-ly beneath the rail . This results in limitations on the layout of the room due to the location of the rail .

In some cases the rail can be built into the ceiling so that only the lower part is visible .

Types of rails

There are three different types of GH3 rails:Rail A, B and C.

GH3 rail A are normally used in single-track systems, straight and with curves .

The overall height of the rails in a room-covering system can vary from 99 mm (4") for two GH3 rail A (traverse rail mounted between GH3 rail A parallel rails) to 381 mm (15") for two GH3 rail C (GH3 rail C parallel rails with under-hanging GH3 rail C traverse rail) .

The traverse rail can be mounted between the parallel rails, be underhanging or be a combination of the two solutions .

Rail curves

Rail curves are used where it is necessary to change the direction of the rail in a single-rail system .

Rail curves are available in angles of 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° .

As a minimum three brackets must be used to mount all rail curves – one of the brackets must always be placed in the middle of the curve .

n 1 . Check all elements, lengths and bracket types against the drawings of the rail system . Then spread out the rail system on the floor and place the individual elements as shown on the drawing in relation to the walls, the bed, the toilet and other lifting points .

Positioning of general lifting points• Beds 1000 mm (40") from the head

board + centre width

• Toilet 150 mm (6") from front edge + centre width• Bath tub 600 mm (24") from the back end

+ centre width .• Wheelchair middle of seat + room for carer

(approx . 1750 mm (70") length ways)

• Changing table/ changing bed 900 mm (36")+ centre width

(unless otherwise specified)

2 . Shape rails and curves according to precise measure-ments . When shaping the rail it is important to remove any irregularities . At the joining point of two rails any internal irregularities must be removed . The rail must be absolutely clean to prevent aluminium chips from attaching themselves to the lifting module/travelling trolley which will result in an unsmooth and noisy operation .

3 . Place two of the enclosed cylinder pins in the round rail track in the bottom of the rail where the rails are joined .The cylinder pin is enclosed with the rail assembly bracket . First push the cylinder pins all the way into one of the rail pieces . When the system has been installed, push half of the pin into the other rail piece to achieve a stable and complete rail assembly .

4 . Fit the brackets . Depending on the type of bracket used, this is done either with or without the rail .

5 . The rail system, or parts hereof in case of a larger system, is lifted up towards the bracket . Holding racks can be used for holding the rail system against the bracket, thereby facilitating the fitting .

6 . When the rail system is pressed fully up against the bracket . Tighten the locking nut firmly .

Control after installation of a rail systemThe rail system must be in level .A load test of the complete rail system is carried out with 1 .5 x the max . load .

General installation of rail systems

n Ceiling installation

Ceiling types: Wood/plaster ceiling and other lightweight ceiling coveringsReinforcements: Laid out by Guldmann installer, above the joists .Bracket types: All GH ceiling brackets

• Examine the loft and remove objects which may obstruct the drilling .

• Mark the position where the bracket is to be fitted . At the same time, it should be determined whether adjusting discs should be used between the ceiling and the ceiling brackets to make the system in level .

Measurement/levelling is performed using laser equipment .

• Drill up through the ceiling . Drill through the holes of the ceiling bracket using an 12 mm (7/16") drill .

• Push an item through the holes to mark the holes and make them visible in the loft .

In this way you avoid having to search for the fixing holes .

• Lay out the reinforcements on the foot of the joists and fix it to the joists .

• When using timber it must be at least 100 x 100 mm (4" x 4") .

• Re-drill up through the holes and through the fixed reinforcements .

• The threaded rods are inserted from above with self-fixing wood nuts which are hammered into the reinforcements .

• Mount bracket, washer and lock nut on threaded rod from below .

• Tighten the locking nut firmly .

• Screw the threaded rod up through the self-fixing wood nut to fix the bracket against the ceiling .

• Tighten lock nut and ensure that the track system is hanging horizontally .

• Fit a counter nut on the threaded rod from the loft so that the counter nut counter-tightens against the self-fixing wood nut .

• The threaded rod can be shortened above the counter nut if the extra threaded rod is in the way .

• Fit the rails .

• When the rails have been fitted to the brackets, tighten the lock nut .

n Ceiling installation, bracket assembly

Ceiling types: All typesBracket types: GH Ceiling bracket lowered standard GH Ceiling bracket straight lowered

The bracket is mainly used in rooms with a high ceiling to bring the rail system down to a normal height of fitting and use .

• Mark the position where the bracket is to be fitted and at the same time measure the length of the extended bracket .

The measurement is performed using laser equipment . The laser is set to the height where the rail is to be fitted (upper edge of rail) . Then measure down at each fixing point from the ceiling to the upper edge of the rail .

• Now size the threaded rods and the pipes to the correct length for each fixing point . Remember to allow for the space required by the upper and lower ceiling brackets .

• Note that a rosette can also be used as a top bracket together with the threaded rod and pipe . However, this only applies to installation in concrete ceilings, or where there is reinforcement e .g . timber .

• The extended bracket is then assembled prior to instal-lation . The top and bottom ceiling brackets are tighten-ed against pipes to create a firm bracket . Remember the guide bushing around the ceiling bracket .

• Now the GH3 extended bracket is ready to be fitted . All brackets are fitted before the rail is installed .

• The fitting of extended brackets in the ceiling is carried out according to the procedure described under GH3 ceiling brackets . For further information, refer to the in-dividual type of ceiling .

• The rail is fitted to the extended bracket in the same way as described under GH3 ceiling brackets .

• When using a standard extended ceiling bracket the procedure is the same, i .e . the brackets are assembled prior to fitting and then fitted to the ceiling as one brack-et .

• After fitting the system it may be neccessary to fit GH3 stabilising brackets as side or inclining support to make the system stable .

• Place the suspension brackets around the extended pipe and onto the wall/into the ceiling and cut pipe to appropiate length .

• Bracket is fitted onto the wall or into the ceiling deped-ing on the texture of the wall or ceiling (see wall types) .

n Ceiling installation, bracket assembly

Ceiling types: All typesBracket types: GH Ceiling bracket slope lowered

GH Ceiling bracket slope lowered are used in connection with false ceilings . The bracket is mainly used in rooms with high ceilings to bring the rail system down below false ceilings to a normal height for installation and use .

Angle-adjustable brackets are used on angled ceiling faces when it is impossible to fit brackets straight above the rails, for example next to ventilation pipes or other piping . In situations where ceiling brackets and pipes are mounted prior to the fitting of the false ceiling .

• Mark the position where the bracket is to be fitted and at the same time measure how long the extended bracket needs to be .

Measurements are carried out using laser equipment . The laser is set to the height where the false ceiling is to be installed . Then measure down at each fixing point from the ceiling to the lower edge of the false ceiling .

• Overmeasure to allow pipes sufficient clearance under the false ceiling .

• Then cut the pipe to size with length to spare and fit the stabilizing bracket and ceiling bracket to the pipe . When fitting pipes to a stabilizing bracket, drill an 10 mm (3/8") hole in the pipe and insert an 10 mm setscrew through the stabilizing bracket and the pipe and secure using a lock nut .

• The fitting of brackets in the ceiling is carried out according to the procedure described under GH3 brack-ets . For further information, refer to the individual type of ceiling .

• After fitting the system it may be neccessary to fit GH3 stabilising brackets as side or inclining support to make the system stable .

• Place the bracket around the extended pipe and onto the wall/into the ceiling and cut pipe to appropriate length .

• Bracket is fitted onto the wall or into the ceiling depen-ding on the texture of the wall or ceiling (see wall types) .

• Following the fitting of brackets and pipes false ceilings

can be installed . A carpenter will fit the false ceiling around the extended pipes . It is important to inform the carpenter that the pipes must be completely vertical .

• Following the fitting of the ceiling, mark where the pipes need to be cut . This marking is carried out using laser equipment . Remember to allow for the base bracket .

• Then cut the pipe to the correct length using a pipe cutter .

• Now fit the stabilizing bracket to the standard ceiling bracket using a washer and a 10 mm (3/8") set screw secured with a 10 mm lock nut .

• The stabilizing bracket is then fitted to the pipe . Drill an 10 mm (3/8") hole in the pipe and then insert an 10 mm setscrew through the stabilizing bracket and the pipe and secure using an 10 mm lock nut .

• The rail is fitted to the extended bracket in the same way as described under GH3 ceiling brackets .

• Plastic rosettes can be fitted around pipes where they emerge through the false ceiling .itting of brackets

n Fitting of endstops

Endstops must always be used in connection with rail stops, whether free hanging, or butting up to a wall or other elements .

• The endstop is placed in the rail before it is fitted .

• Before the endstop is placed in the rail, check that the flange nuts are positioned correctly .

• When the rail system has been fully installed, place the endstops in the correct position at the rail ends .

• If there is a risk that the end stop may fall out, a hole of 4 .5 mm is drilled through the rail – not through the angle bracket of the endstop .

• Hammer the accompanying spring pin into the endstop and rail .

• When dismantling the endstop the screws must be all out, subsequently the angle profile including cylinder pin can be tipped out, hence the pin is still attached to the angle profile .

selectrical installationsProtection against electric shock

These precautions apply to installations made in Denmark. Local requirements may differ.

Guldmann ceiling hoist and rail systems are manufactured and installed in accordance with the regulations of Medical Electrical Equipment UL 60601-1 .

Guldmann has a UL/DEMKO approval of its products which confirms that they meet the requirements contained in UL 60601-1 . This regulation defines how medical equipment must be classified and also how it must be protected so that danger of electric shock does not arise when handling the products .

Guldmann ceiling hoist and related rail system are classi-fied as equipment in Class I – High Voltage Regulation, Electro-Medical Equipment, Chapter 14 .

Reference is made to Fig . 701A – Area Division 0 to 3 .

Installation of the rail system is carried out with safety voltage – designated SELV . The safety transformer with a nominal voltage of 24 V AC voltage .

In accordance with the High Voltage Regulation, Chapter 701 – AREAS WITH BATHTUBS OR SHOWERS

Chapter 01. Protection for safety reasonsWhen SELV is used (safety voltage), protection against direct contact must be in place regardless of the size of the voltage, i .e . to min IP2X .

The geometry of the live rails meet the requirements for protection against contact .

Chapter 01.13.1. Additional equalizerNoteMetallic pipes and ducts (Guldmann aluminium rails) which are only found in these four areas and are not conductive when in contact with earth or parts outside the areas do not have to be connected to the equalizers.

Regarding installation of Guldmann rail systems in bathroom environmentsGuldmann power supply ( transformer) must not be install-ed and charging of hoist must not be carried out in Areas 0, 1 and 2 . Power supply and charging area must be located outside Area 2, but hoist and rails may be used inside the area .

If e .g . cleaning by hosing, the power supply and charging area must be located completely separate from the area in which splashing with water may occur .

If the rail system is only installed in the bathroom and not in other rooms outside the bathroom, the rails do not need grounding .

Grounding must be done if the rails continue outside the bathroom and the lower edge of the rail is less than 3 .0 m (120") above the floor .

excepted are:Single rails hanging higher than 2 .25 m (90") above the floor and not continuing into Area 0, 1 and 2 .

For single rails the grounding may be located as required either in the bathroom or in the adjacent room .

The parallel rails do not need to be grounded . NoteThese rules have been issued by the Electricity Council and form part of the High Voltage Regulation .There may be special local requirements for the installation of rail systems in medical treatment areas .

Any special requirements are carried out without the partici-pation of Guldmann at the purchaser’s own risk .

s InstructionsConnecting protective ground cable to rail/rails .

In fixed rail systems a protective ground cable must be installed from the connecting point of the protective ground cable to the rail .

The following must be observed:1 . Only connect a protective ground cable to a protective

ground cable connecting point that is approved by an authorized electrician .

2 . The installation to the mains must be done by an authorized electrican .

3 . The ground cable must be carefully fastened, and a sufficiently big cable square must be chosen, at least 1 mm² . The installation must be done so that the resistance from the connecting point of the protective ground cable to the rail does not exceed 0 .2 Ohm .

Mechanical fixing of the protective ground cable to the rail:

1 . Make a 4 mm thread in the railjust above the buttom line (see pictures) .

Drill a 10 mm (3/8") deep hole with a Ø3 .5 mm drill . Cut a 4 mm thread with a tap .

2 . Place the groundcable with the ringeye .

3 . Mount the ringeye with washer and screw .

4 . The cable must carefully be fixed .

More rails connected to each other:Normally the assembly brackets will give a sufficiently low resistance. If this should not be the case, the rails are connected in series or in parallel using the same method as described above. Check with an ohmmeter.

s GH3 is equipped with batteries that require regular recharging .

Class I equipmentFixed rail systems are class I equipment and must be installed by a qualified installer or by Guldmann Service Team .Equipment is disconnected from Supply Mains by breaking the main breaker switch .

Class II equipmentMobile equipment is class II equipment (marked with the double-encased symbol) and can be connected to the mains direct by the user .The transformer is disconnected from Supply Mains by detach the mains plug from the wall outlet .

Safety concerning static electricity (eSD)Service technicians and installers must use an ESD-safety package consisting of a mat, a ground wire, and a bracelet . The technician/installer connects the mat to a grounding point, for instance a radiator or a water pipe . He must then put on the bracelet and connect it to the mat . If it is not possible to find a grounding point, the mat and the bracelet must be used as a minimum . Only then is it allowed to work with the PC Board or com-ponents where it is possible to come into contact with the PC Board .
