Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) acts as an emergency power backup to the existing load at the time of
power outages or power failures. UPS system provides instant power to protect computer hardware, electrical
appliances and other appliances from the sudden shut down resulting in data loss.
Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)
Offline Standby UPS
Online UPSLine
Interactive UPS
Types of Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)UPS are capable of providing short-term power during
power cuts, blackouts or load shedding, protection
against power sags or poorly conditioned power feeds,
regulation of sudden voltage spikes and reduction in
instability of the mains frequency. UPS are widely used
in data centres, hospitals, hotels, telecommunication, IT,
oil and gas, chemical, and food processing industries.
UPS can be of three types:
1. Offline Standby UPS: During power failures or fluctuations in the voltage levels beyond a preset
tolerance limit, the mains supply is switched to secondary power source i.e., the UPS transmits power
to equipment and as soon as the power supply is restored, UPS switches back to the primary power
source. Generally, these types of UPS take 4-10 milliseconds to transfer from the mains supply to the
battery mode and vice-versa. Offline standby UPS are devices mostly used in personal computers.

2. Online UPS: Online UPS are the most expensive type of UPS technology owing to its ability to withstand large
voltage fluctuations (approximately 184V-276V) prior to transferring the power supply to battery mode thereby,
eliminating unnecessary battery discharges.
Online UPS works continuously irrespective of whether the power supply is present or not, allowing smooth and
continuous workflow. During the time of load shedding or blackout, power supply is automatically switched to
the battery mode without any delay (i.e., the switching time is nearly zero), which supplies power to equipment
till the batteries are drained out and as the power supply resumes, batteries gets charged again.
Online UPS are mostly preferred in commercial and industrial applications as they reduce the frequent
switching of power supply to battery mode, thereby maximising the battery life and the reliability of UPS. These
type of UPS also ensure that equipment is free from interference such as spikes and voltage variations.
3. Line Interactive UPS: Line interactive UPS are mainly used in small business, web & departmental servers.
These type of UPS are more efficient in terms of performance as compared to standby UPS but less efficient in
comparison with online UPS.
During voltage fluctuations or power failures, power supply switches to battery mode in two to four milliseconds
that allows a faster response than a standby UPS for sensitive equipment to operate without power
interruptions.
Standby and Line interactive UPS provide less protection to equipment in comparison with online UPS and
therefore, online UPS are the most preferred type of UPS for commercial and industrial applications.

UPS Market to Reach $ 9.8 Billion by 2021
Advancements in battery technology coupled with declining UPS prices to drive sales of UPS devices till 2020
According to TechSci Research report “Global UPS Market By kVA Range, By End User, By Region, Competition Forecastand Opportunities, 2011-2021”, the global market for UPS is anticipated to touch US $ 9.85 billion by 2021 on accountof increasing concerns over power fluctuations and growing need to protect sensitive equipment from adverse effectsof grid power instability. UPS provides instantaneous protection to electric equipment from sudden interruptions inpower supply and therefore, these systems have attained a widespread adoption across the globe, and are widely usedin data centres, hospitals, hotels, telecommunication, IT, oil and gas, chemical, and food processing industries. Surgingdata consumption across the globe is fueling expansion in the data centre industry, which is expected to in turn, createhuge demand for UPS systems, as data centres require constant power supply to store and protect data. With increasingneed to preserve and secure data, globally, the market for data centres is anticipated to grow from US $ 14.6 billion in2014 to US $ 22.7 billion by 2021.
On account of implementation of stringent government policies and increasing SMB IT investments in countries like US,China and India, as well as in other regions of Asia-Pacific and North America, demand for UPS systems is anticipated toincrease, globally. In 2015, less than 5kVA UPS segment accounted for the largest share in the global UPS market due toits easy affordability and increasing digitalization in diverse end-use segments including small offices, banks, hospitals, shopping malls, amusement parks, retail outlets, hotels, ITeS, educational and financial institutions, etc. The global ITinvestments are anticipated to increase from US $ 2.08 trillion in 2014 to US $ 2.45 trillion in 2019, implying rapiddevelopment of corporate offices and IT hubs, which is expected to further boost UPS demand in the comingyears. Emerson Network Power, APC by Schneider Electric, and Eaton Corporation Plc. are few of the major playersoperating in the global UPS market.
“On account of the rapid infrastructural development as well as anticipated expansion in IT/ITeS, retail space, hotels, hospitality, small & medium-sized enterprises, data centers etc., in the coming years, especially in Asia-Pacific and NorthAmerica, demand for UPS is anticipated to increase over the next five years.” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Directorwith TechSci Research, a research based global management consulting firm.
