Welcome to UptoWn chUrchWe are a community of people who seek to know the full life that is found in Jesus Christ and to share that life with others in the Uptown area, in Charlotte, and even around the world. We have found a home here, and we want this community to feel like home for you, too. This worship guide is intended to help you worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:23) We want our worship to be both fully heartfelt and informed. Our hope is for the gospel to permeate our whole liturgy (order of worship) as well as each individual element. The titles at the tops of pages are meant to help you see how each element fits into the bigger liturgical picture. The sidebar contains notes to define terms or give scriptural context. Whether you come from a church background or not, we want you to understand our order of worship (liturgy) and why we have it.If you have children, here are a few options. The church nursery downstairs is for children up to four years old, and is open during both the 9am and 10:30am worship services. In addition, there is a Baby Breakroom for moms and infants under 12 months located directly outside the Sanctuary, using the right front exit doors. This room is not staffed but includes an audio feed of the worship service. During our 9am service, children age 4 - 5th grade have the option of attending Sunday School classes after the singing. During our 10:30am service, children age 4 - 1st grade have the option of attending Children’s Church after the singing.A word to the wise about our space: There are two important features of our beautiful worship space that you should know. First, the balcony is surprisingly noisy. Since this is a common place for a visitor to gravitate, we just want to give you a heads up. Second, if you need the rest-rooms, they are located through the door at the front of the sanctuary to the left of the stage (both upstairs and downstairs). Because the paths to the rest-rooms are in everyone’s line of sight, please be courteous to others and plan ahead if possible. There are three ways you can participate in online giving: (1) Website: Go to https://uptownchurchclt.churchcenter.com/giving. You may also find links on the Uptown Church website main page and Quick Links. (2) Text to give: Text an amount to ‘84321’ to receive a link to our online giving page. (3) App: Download the Church Center App on your mobile device, select Uptown Church, and set up an account. We want to know you! To connect more deeply with our community, speak with any of our Pastors, Elders, or Deacons. They can direct you towards a Life Group or the next Visitor’s Lunch or Inquirer’s Class. If you have questions or want to learn more about Uptown, you can email Office Manager, Lisa Marie Ferguson, at [email protected].

Even as we hear the voice of the pastor, it is the Lord who truly calls us into worship.

Psalm 72:11-1411 May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him! 12 For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper. 13 He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. 14 From oppression and violence he redeems their life, and precious is their blood in his sight.

Lead Us BackB. Gilles | B. Ritter

Falling down upon our knees, sharing now in common shameWe have sought security, not the cross that bears Your nameFences guard our hearts and homes, comfort sings a siren tuneWe’re a valley of dry bones, lead us back to life in You

Lord we fall upon our knees, we have shunned the weak and poorWorshipped beauty, courted kings, and the things their gold affordsPrayed for those we’d like to know, favor sings a siren tuneWe’ve become a talent show, lead us back to life in You

You have caused the blind to see, we have blinded him againWith our man-made laws and creeds, eager ready to condemnNow we plead before Your throne, power sings a siren tuneWe’ve been throwing heavy stones, lead us back to life in You

We’re a valley of dry bones, lead us back to life in YouWe’ve become a talent show, lead us back to life in YouWe’ve been throwing heavy stones, lead us back to life in You© 2006 Bobby Gilles and Sojourn Community Church | CCLI Song # 4878333

Isaiah 55:11Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Psalm 32:1-51Blessed is the one whose trans-gression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. 3For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of sum-mer. Selah 5I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Dismissal of the Children

The Pastoral Prayer Ruling Elder, Jon Levy (9:00)Ruling Elder, Chad Kraska (10:30)

Bringing the tithe is an act of worship commanded by God. In this act we demonstrate our own dependency on the Lord, the maker and sustainer of all things. This element is for those who call Uptown Church their home.

For those who are giving online, we encourage you to participate in the collecting of tithes and offerings section of the worship service by placing a giving token in the collection plate which will connect your gift to the corporate worship service. These small wooden tokens are available in both the narthex and in the front of the sanctuary so that you can get one as you come in to worship.

As shepherds of our church body, our Elders rise to pray for us and on our behalf. Join them by silently agreeing.

Benediction Rev. Dave Kulp

Psalm 118:21 21I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.

“Benediction” means blessing. A man ordained to administer word and sacrament raises his hands at the end of public worship, and pronounces a blessing from God to His people. This is not a prayer to God, but a blessing from God. So the congregants should look up, and often will extend open palms in a posture of reception.

Ministry Safe Training for all Volunteers & LeadersFor those serving within our Nursery, Children’s, and Youth ministries at Uptown Church, please pay attention to upcoming emails related to our abuse prevention training though Ministry Safe, which includes a background check consent form. Over the next six months we will be working to onboard all volunteers to this training, including those whose volunteer service at Uptown predates 2017 when we began using Ministry Safe. In short, every Uptown Church volunteer will be receiving an email in the upcoming months, either their initial Ministry Safe training or their two-year renewal. This is of the utmost importance for the safety and wellbeing of our children and families at Uptown Church, and is also a requirement to serve our body, due to the importance of protecting our children. Thank you in advance for working to complete these training videos. Please direct any questions or concerns to your ministry head or [email protected].

Update from the SessionMcGowan & Associates Update:

As we’ve regularly communicated, the session of Uptown Church has agreed to work with McGowan & Associates in conflict resolution/strategy. Byron Yawn, our representative from McGowan and Associates, is here this weekend working with the staff, session, and diaconate. He will give a brief introduction of himself and his company during the announcement portion of each Sunday service. Additionally we will also host a time for him to share with the congregation both during the SS hour and from 12-1pm as well. During this time, Byron will share about their company and process as well as field questions as able. This time will be held in lieu of Sunday school in the Cafe for both adults and youth. Outlets for individual concerns and/or specifics about the situation at Uptown will be addressed in a future trip. We encourage all members to attend one of these sessions.

Interim Pastor Update:

David O’Dowd, our Interim Candidate, will join us next weekend (Feb. 7-9) for interviews and meetings with the Preaching Subcommittee, session, diaconate and staff. Look for further details about David and the Interim pastor position next week. He will also be preaching for us next Sunda. And, the Congregation will also get a chance to meet David after the second service on Sunday, February 9th during ‘Cookies & Cocoa’ on the lawn, weather permitting.

Preaching:

Earlier we informed you we were going to be bringing in visiting preachers during January and February, with the addition of David O’Dowd to the preaching schedule for next Sunday we wanted to let you know that we will have visiting preachers for the next three Sundays. Please continue to pray for us and for the church over the coming weeks. Our next Session meeting is scheduled for February 10th, but each of the subcommittees will be continuing their work between now and then as well.

sermon serIesJohn: That You Might Believe

In John 16:33 Jesus promised that in this world we will have trouble. When trouble comes it is easy to focus on ourselves, our circumstances or even our uncertainty, but John calls us to focus on Jesus, saying that he wrote this gospel that we might believe and have life. It is our hope that God uses each of these sermons to help you fix your eyes upon Jesus who is: the Great I Am, the bread of life, the light of the world, the resurrection and life, the good shepherd, the true vine and the way, the truth and the life. In the midst of trouble let us take heart, for Jesus has overcome the world.

Teachers: Forde Britt, Grae Garrison, Chad Kraska, Craig Paddock, Tom Queen

Where: Café

Church is not only a group of people gathered on Sunday, or a building for worship, rather it is a dynamic plan of God to build his kingdom, encourage the saints, and call us deeper into relationship with Him. In this class, we will see how the many aspects of “church” are all a part of creating a dynamic community of believers this side of heaven.

*For January, the high school students will be joining for the Adult Sunday School Class in the café, and the middle school students will be upstairs in the 3rd floor boardroom. In February, this will be flipped. The middle school students will join the Adult SS Class and high school students will be upstairs.
