Gospel: Saint Matthew XVI: 13-20

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION “O woman, great is your faith!” (See Saint Matthew 15:21-28). On 15 August we celebrated one of the great feasts of the Church: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary! The above words, which in today’s Gospel, Jesus says to a Canaanite woman, certainly apply to the Blessed Virgin Mary. “O woman, great is your

faith!” Don’t you wish these words could also be said of you? I know I would. Most of us, though, feel that our faith is not quite of this caliper. So, what can we do? I ask Mary, that woman of great faith, to intercede for me. Why not add that intention to one of the decades of your daily Rosary? You do not say the Rosary daily? Well, why not start doing so today? It could lead you to an increase of faith. Wouldn’t it be grand if one day we could hear Jesus say to us “O (add your own name) great is your faith?” Let us start right now: Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

CALL HOME: (516) 378-0665 The Peace of Christ be with you. You have

reached the home of Our Holy Redeemer in

Freeport, where the hazy, hot, and humid days

of summer are no match for our faith in Jesus

Christ! If this is an emergency and someone is

dying, please call: (516) 492 – 6508. That’s

(516) 492 – 6508.

There is no match for our faith in Jesus Christ.

Through, with, and in Him we share in His

victory that even as we speak is winning the

day! And that brothers and sisters irks the

Devil, and prods him to employ the evil spirits

that seek to divide and conquer while the Holy

Spirit has been handed over by Christ to unite

us: to God and one another!

Before we can stand united in our pursuit of peace and justice for every human person regardless of

race, language, skin colour, sex, creed, or stage of development, we must kneel before God. We

must acknowledge our sins; we must ask forgiveness for our sins; and we must repent. Then and

only then we will see more clearly how to bring about the conversion of others. Then and only then

will others see that there is something greater than Jonah here; something greater than the wisdom

of Solomon here. Then and only then will we be one as the Father and Jesus are One: in the Spirit of

our common humanity that makes us One with every human person regardless of race, language,

skin colour, sex, creed, or stage of development.

Come home for Holy Mass where we kneel before God and stand united every Saturday at 5:00 P.M.

in English and 7:00 P.M. in Spanish. And on Sunday at 7:00 A.M., 8:00 A.M., 9:30 A.M., 11:30 A.M.

and 5:00 P.M. in English and at 1:30 P.M. in Spanish. In addition to those Masses, the generosity of

the Grover family has made it possible for us to have Mass at 175 Woodcleft Avenue on the Nautical

Mile: at 10:00 A.M. in English and in Spanish at 11:30 A.M. Parishioners are strongly encouraged to

attend these outdoor Masses and to bring a chair.

If you would like information regarding Funerals, please press 0. If you would like information

regarding Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and/or Our Holy Redeemer School of

Religious Education, please hang up and dial (516) 546 – 1057. If you would like information

regarding the needs of the hungry, thirsty, naked, and homebound, please hang up and call

(516) 868 – 8289.

Thank you for calling Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport and remember, in the words of our Pastor:

“YOU are there, I am here, and God is with us!”

A LETTER FROM THE PASTOR

OUR HOLY REDEEMER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

37 SOUTH OCEAN AVENUE

FREEPORT, NEW YORK 11520

(516) 378-0665

June 2020

Dear Parishioner,

A year ago at this time, I wrote to you – in the spirit of Neil Armstrong – about taking “one small step for a parishioner; one giant leap for a parish”, and how parishioners (between 25 November 2018 and June 2019) generously embraced those words, and took us, in the spirit of Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise: boldly where our Parish had never gone before.

Yes, your response to our 2018 – 2019 “one small step …” initiative surfaced an increase of nearly $4,000.00 per week in your total Sunday-giving in its aftermath, and until you were told to “stay home”, we were well on our way to reaching a weekly average of $20,000.00 per week in 2019 – 2020!

Not only did you stay home, but so too (as of this writing) did nearly $200,000.00! That unexpected shortfall however, did not – as people traveling through and to Freeport on the Long Island Railroad, Sunrise Highway, and Merrick Road have seen – stop your Parish (charged as we are by the Lord Himself to “put out into the deep” (Saint Luke V:4)) from requesting and receiving approval for the one million dollar Bell Tower repair and restoration project.

Because of generations of generous giving from parishioners like you, we confidently entered the unchartered waters of quarantine knowing that, even though you were there, and I was here: God was with us in the boat. His Presence provided the impetus for the request. His Presence provided the wisdom that granted that request. And His Presence with us in these unchartered waters is moving us forward and upward even as we speak!

Please consider supporting that movement with the purchase of a Raffle/Raffle/Raffle ticket. That purchase will not only help us to recover from our $200,000.00 shortfall and reach our “one giant leap” goal of $20,000.00 per week in 2019 – 2020, but it will also help us to offset the cost of repairing and restoring our Bell Tower! Once that is done, not only will our bell be ringing and swinging for the first time in over 75 years, but the doors of our Perpetual Adoration Chapel will reopen for the first time in over a year, and help us move forward and upward – not to the moon – but to Heaven!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Father Douglas R. Arcoleo Pastor

Now a Word About Mary (With Help from Benedict XVI)

ANGELUS

Courtyard of the Papal Residence, Castel Gandolfo

Sunday, 22 August 2010

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

A week after the Solemnity of her Assumption into Heaven the Liturgy invites

us to venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary with the title of "Queen". We

contemplate the Mother of Christ crowned by her Son, in other words

associated with His universal kingship, as she is portrayed in numerous

mosaics and paintings. This year too, the Memorial falls on a Sunday,

receiving a greater light from the word of God and from the celebration of

the weekly Easter. In particular, the image of the Virgin Mary as Queen finds

important confirmation in today's Gospel, where Jesus declares: "Behold,

some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last" (Lk 13:

30). This expression is typical of Christ as it clearly reflects a theme dear to

His prophetic teaching, because the Evangelists recorded it several times

although differently formulated. Our Lady is the perfect example of this

Gospel truth, namely that God brings down the proud of this world and

raises the humble (cf. Lk 1: 52).

The small and simple young girl of Nazareth became Queen of the world!

This is one of the marvels that reveal God's Heart. Of course, Mary's

Queenship is totally relative to Christ's kingship. He is the Lord Whom after

the humiliation of death on the Cross the Father exalted above any other creature in Heaven and on earth and under

the earth (cf. Phil 2: 9-11). Through a design of grace, the Immaculate Mother was fully associated with the mystery

of the Son: in His Incarnation; in His earthly life, at first hidden at Nazareth and then manifested in the messianic

ministry; in His Passion and death; and finally, in the glory of His Resurrection and Ascension into Heaven. The

Mother did not only share the human aspects of this mystery with the Son. She also shared, through the work of the

Holy Spirit within her, His profound intention, the divine will, so that the whole of her poor and lowly life was exalted,

transformed and glorified, passing through the "narrow door" which is Jesus Himself (cf. Lk 13: 24). Yes, Mary was

the first person to take the "way" to enter the Kingdom of God that Christ opened, a way that is accessible to the

humble, to all who trust in the word of God and endeavour to put it into practice.

In the history of the cities and peoples evangelized by the Christian message there are many testimonies of public

veneration in some cases even institutional of the Queenship of the Virgin Mary. Today, however, let us as children

of the Church above all renew our devotion to the One whom Jesus bequeathed to us as Mother and Queen. Let us

entrust to her intercession the daily prayer for peace, especially in places where the senseless logic of violence is

most ferocious; so that all people may be convinced that in this world we must help each other, as brothers and

sisters, to build the civilization of love. Maria, Regina pacis, ora pro nobis!

The School Bus Driver's PrayerPlease, Lord, watch over me this day. Please help me remember to watch

all five mirrors, two dozen windows, eight gauges, six warning lights,

six dozen faces, three lanes of traffic and to keep a third eye open for

wobbling bicycles and daydreaming pedestrians,

especially teenagers wearing headsets who are in another world. Please, Lord, help me hear

all train whistles, truck and automobile horns,

police sirens and the two-way radio. Please, Lord, give me a hand

for the gear lever, the steering wheel, the route book, the radio microphone

and the turn-signal lever. And, Lord, please grant me the self-control to keep my hands away from Johnny's neck.

And one more thing, dear Lord, please don't let Mary be sick

all over the bus. And finally, Lord, please watch over us all

so that we can do it again next year. Amen.

Week Thirty Selection

Bishop Venerable Fulton J. Sheen On “Guilt and Reparation”

From the Book, “Life is Worth Living, Book I) Our modern world very seldom thinks of the relationship of a

world crisis to guilt. The modern world practically ignores guilt as

responsibility for the violation of a moral law… It is just as vain to deny

that the breaking of moral laws has consequences as to deny that the

breaking of physical laws produces certain effects. Unfortunately, many

live amidst crises, trials, cold wars, and political disorders without any

sense of guilt. They fail to see a connection between what is happening

in the world order and the way we live, think, and move.

Nations, too, can get in the habit of

denying that their trials, the hatred of

other nations, their insecurity…may be

related to their moral failings. It is too

superficial a justification for any nation to

blame another for its crises.

Granted now that nations as well as

individuals can violate God’s laws, it

follows that the evil that brings us to the

tragic predicament must be expiated.

Greek drama and all the great

philosophies of the East and West are

full of the idea that guilt must be atoned

for. There is no British God, no

American God. God is the Father of all

men, and His Lordship is exercised over all history. God’s Will and

man’s will are interlocked in every heart and in every nation. When

man’s will rebels against God’s Will, man creates a tragic situation,

which in the person is a sense of guilt, and in the community of nations,

a crisis. Our tragedy today is due basically to the human will opposing

the Divine Will.

The next point is: Guilt needs reparation. There is a great difference

between sorrow for the wrong we did and making reparation for it…

Suppose every time we did wrong we were told to drive a nail in a

board; and every time we were forgiven we were told to pull a nail out.

The board would be full of holes. These holes are the record of how

our wrong deeds disturb the order of justice. Many think that all they

have to do when they do wrong individually or socially is merely to ask

to be forgiven. They must also make reparation for the wrong. The

equilibrium and the balance of justice have been disturbed, and that

balance must be restored by penance. (to be continued…)

FAITH AND EDUCATION

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL

From 27 July – 7 August, several young men from The De La Salle School in grade 5 moving to grade 6 attended Old Westbury Summer Camp at Holy Child Academy. Our students were able to attend on a scholarship provided through the generosity of a benefactor and the kindness of Holy Child Academy. This camp was a welcome relief for young men who had been cooped up and quarantined as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The camp maintained all safety protocols and social distancing where necessary.

The camp day started at 9:00 A.M., ended at 4:00 P.M., and was packed with a variety of programs and activities to fill out the day. The daily program included workshops of each camper’s choice, tennis lessons, and mixed sports along with other rotating activities throughout the two-week session. The opportunity for the young men to experience the freedom of the outside world and be able to socialize and play with their classmates was priceless. Special thanks to all the staff at Old Westbury Summer Camp for their efforts to ensure that our students had this opportunity.

The De La Salle School exists to provide a Catholic School education to young men whose families cannot afford the tuition at other Catholic middle schools. Our fifth-grade class for September still has some openings. Any parent who is interested in enrolling his/her son in our 5th grade class for September is encouraged to act soon while seats are still open. Applications during the summer are available in the school office Monday-Thursday from 8:30 A.M.-1:30 P.M.

FREEPORT, NEW YORK 11520

WORD

At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord,

Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a

word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked Him, “Send her away,

for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the

woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She

said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to

her in reply, O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you

wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.
