This past June, the National Urban Technology Center (Urban Tech) hosted its Annual Awards Gala dinner. It was an elegant evening in celebration of Urban Tech’s mission of developing educational curricula and services for building social and emotional skills and improving academic, financial and digital literacy skills for underserved youth.

The financial commitments Urban Tech has received from our generous benefactors support us in our mission to bridge the digital divide that exists in areas across the United States. It is because of the support of these generous individuals, organizations and corporations listed on the last page that Urban Tech is able to develop programming and new supportive services to advance the technological competencies, both inside and outside of the classroom.

With the help of this year’s benefactors, we will launch our new YLA Bullying Prevention module to support the N.Y.S. Dignity For All Students Act passed in 2012 to protect a student’s right to learn in a stress-free environment. DASA was enacted to respond to the large number of students who are harassed and bullied on a daily basis and Urban Tech will address this problem by promoting pro-social values among students and more positive behavior in schools and in afterschool programs.

We are eternally grateful to everyone who made our 2016 Annual Awards Gala a success and look forward to an even bigger event next year!

URBAN TECH EYES PRINCIPALS FOR NEW LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM

Principals are the primary leaders of our education system. With their vision and leadership skills, they guide students, teachers, parents, faculty and staff towards the common goal of providing our children with the tools they need to become outstanding students and citizens.

Now, more than ever, the social and emotional skills students learn in school help them navigate the complex surroundings of our modern world. The National Urban Technology Center’s (Urban Tech) Executive Principal Leadership Institute (EPLI) is an innovative, 18-month intensive pilot program designed to enhance the talents of school principals with transformational leadership skills.

URBAN TECH’S NEW ACTION AGENDA

REIMAGINING LITERACYFounded in 1995, The National Urban Technology Center, Inc. (Urban Tech), a 501(c)(3) education not-for-profit, provides access to technology and training to address the widening computer literacy and achievement gap in inner-city communities. About 90% of Urban Tech’s clients live at or below the poverty level. Urban Tech’s primary focus is to transfer educational tools to schools and community-based organizations nationwide for promoting academic performance, life skills and workforce preparation among young people, ages 10 to 19. The organization also provides training programs for the educators who serve these populations.

For over 20 years, Urban Tech has provided special digital and classroom programs designed to support individualized learning and help young people acquire the technology, information and life management skills they need to navigate the complex world around them.

REIMAGINING LITERACY

More than reading, writing and mathematics, our youth require a broader skill set to navigate and manage the world they live in.

Over the last two decades, Urban Tech has designed and implemented programs that assist youth, educators and adults to acquire and refine the skills they need to make good decisions and to compete successfully in the 21st Century global community.

Today, we are proud to launch a new initiative, Reimagining Literacy, that will integrate traditional skill set silos and break ground for new supportive services that will combine our core programs with the latest learning research to better equip our clients with the skills they need to grow and succeed. Reimagining Literacy will repackage our current programs and add new ones to our services.

Our new definition of literacy will be expanded to include: Information Literacy Digital Literacy Financial Literacy Life Management Literacy

Urban Tech’s core mission is to use the power of technology to transform lives. This is achieved by combining its over-20-year history of providing effective social emotional learning, digital literacy, financial literacy, academic supports and dropout prevention services to high-needs, underserved communities with the added expertise of globally-recognized educational and industry partners.

Urban Tech adheres to the highest pedagogical standards and principles in compliance with state and federal policies, including the U.S. Department of Education National Technology Plan, the National Assessment for Educational Progress and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

Stay tuned for more details about our new programs that will roll out in late 2016 and into 2017.

Join us as we reimagine the future of our country’s youth.

The goal of this ground-breaking program is to produce principals who are highly skilled, visionary and transformative leaders. Upon receiving specialized training in the areas of social/emotional literacy, budgeting, negotiating, advocacy, fundraising, education technology and effective community engagement, these principals will be able to share their honed skills with their teachers, administrators, staff, students and families.

The initiative will also revolutionize the way educators view school principals as chief education officers, visionary and transformational leaders, by providing supports to help them create optimal learning environments that will lead to high rates of student achievement, principal retention and urban centers of excellence.
