FORT BENNING, Ga. (TRADOC NewsService, March 18, 2004) – The U.S. ArmyInfantry Center is ramping up for one ofthe final pilot phases of the proposed newBasic Officer Leadership Course.

Starting July 10, the single company of200 new officers will undergo 6 ½ weeksof intense combat training.

This single-site pilot is one of the finalsteps the Army is taking in preparation forthe full-scale transition scheduled for June2006.

The course differs from current OBCdoctrine in that its sole focus is combattraining and leadership.

“This is a rigorous, tough course,” saidLt. Col. Marlon Blocker, the Fort BenningBOLC commander. “These officers willspend 80 percent of their course time inthe field learning warrior tasks, battle drillsand combat tactics. And it’s not just theexperience of walking through the trainingso they know the information, it’s alsoteaching these young leaders how to train

their Soldiers.”Officers currently receive initial training

at West Point, Reserve Officer TrainingCorps or Officer Candidate School prior tocommissioning and then proceed tobranch-specific training.

Under the new Officer EducationSystem, incoming leaders will receive, forthe most part, the same training beforecommissioning (Phase I), come on activeduty and report to BOLC for core combatskill and leadership training (Phase II)before going on to branch-specific courses

(Phase III).“Not only will this provide the Army with

competent, confident officers capable ofreporting to their first units as immediatevalue-added,” Blocker said, “but it willallow the branch courses to focus on theircore doctrine. The end result is officerswho are better prepared to lead and trainSoldiers.”

BOLC students from all branches will

train together rigorously on tacticallyoriented tasks like urban and convoyoperations, advanced rifle marksmanship,Global Positioning System and advancedland navigation, combatives, battle drillsand other core warrior tasks, Blocker said.

The move towards Army-wide imple-mentation of BOLC will continue with afour-site pilot beginning in January at FortsBenning, Bliss, Sill and Knox.

BOLC will be a significant addition to

the heavy student load at Fort Benning,but Blocker said the post is prepared forthe additional 400 students per cycle.

He said the 11th Infantry Regiment hasalready secured two barracks buildingswithin the Airborne School and OfficerCandidate School complexes, which willbe ready when the July pilot launches.

And equipment isn’t an issue either.Blocker said the new courses have been

coordinated extensively with Training andDoctrine Command and the program iswell-resourced. Training officers will beexposed to the best equipment andtraining aids the Army has to offer.

“We will be creating well-grounded,more tactically and technically proficientofficers in all branches,” he said.

FORT SILL, Okla. (TRADOC NewsService, March 14, 2004) – Beginning inJuly 2006, each year 2,000 to 2,500Active and Reserve Component lieuten-ants will attend the second phase of the

Basic Officer Leadership Course taught byFort Sill’s 30th Field Artillery Regiment.The new course will augment U.S.

Army Training and Doctrine Command’sofficer basic course training at Fort Silland will more than double the number ofstudents who attended OBC at Sill lastyear. The course will also be taught atFort Benning, Ga., Fort Bliss, Texas, andFort Knox, Ky., as announced Feb. 23 bysenior Army officials.

Preparations for BOLC II are alreadybeing felt on Fort Sill, and the addition willaffect both the main post and the trainingrange, said Maj. James A. Grigg, S-3,

30th FA Regiment.“Barracks, a classroom building,

battery headquarters (and) those kinds ofprojects are (starting to be) built andrenovated,” he said.

Because 28 days of the six-weekcourse will be spent out in the field – training on grenades, convoy live fire, rifleand pistol ranges – renovations andadditions will also be made to the ranges.

“We’re getting some new rifle rangesbuilt. It’s brought money in here to help usbuild a new convoy live-fire range ... it’sallowing us to improve our training base

here at Fort Sill,” he said.Fort Sill has already received $6 million

to get ready for BOLC II. Barracks arealready designated, work is starting on therenovation, and equipment and cadre arearriving, said Mike Dooley, 30th FARegiment deputy.

“We currently have about 12 cadre onthe ground from different specialties, andwe are starting to get our BOLC II equip-ment in,” Dooley said. The equipment isbasic military equipment including tents,rucksacks and other items used in basicand field training.

Work should begin this week on the

barracks, classroom and battery head-quarters of the Fort Sill BOLC II complex,he said.

BOLC II skill set“Leadership development – while

educating them to think broadly – mustprepare them for the complexities on thebattlefields they’ll see when they join theirfirst units,” said Gen. Kevin P. Byrnes,TRADOC commanding general, according

to a U.S. Army Public Affairs Feb. 22 newsrelease.

The basic reason for BOLC II is thatlieutenants weren’t always prepared withbasic skills required at every unit, regard-less of an officer’s specialty, Grigg said.

“You had to trust that you had a good

platoon sergeant who was willing to teacha lieutenant how to ... give a platoonoperations order, do a platoon convoy,man a checkpoint. ... The (noncommis-sioned officers) had to pick up a lot ofslack and train the lieutenants on thingsthey didn’t get trained on before they hittheir first unit,” he said.

Three phasesTRADOC looked at all the tasks a

lieutenant needs to know when assignedto his or her first unit, and broke thelearning into three phases.

BOLC II “takes a new lieutenant in the

Army, from his commissioning source ...and gives him six-week basic Army skills[training] that go across all branches andprepares him as the new junior officer andleader for Army-wide leadership skills andwarrior tasks,” Grigg said.

BOLC I is the precommissioningtraining. BOLC III will be “what we now calOBC and that is branch-specific” training,Grigg said.

The third phase of BOLC focuses onwhat an officer is going to be a specialistin – artillery, infantry, armor, quartermasterordnance or another specialty, Dooleysaid.

TimelineFort Benning will conduct a pilot

program this spring, and 20 field artillerystudents will attend, Dooley said.

A multi-site pilot of BOLC II, conductedat all four sites, is scheduled for January2006.

After a break to adjust schedules andfix any issues, the course is scheduled toofficially begin at all four sites in the fourthquarter of fiscal year 2006, with 11 BOLCII classes scheduled per year, Dooley said

Only one-third of the officers in eachBOLC II will be field-artillery officers; therest will be from other specialties, he said.When the course is over, there will be abreak of five to 10 days so the lieutenantscan travel to and process in at their BOLCIII post for specialty-specific training. Field-artillery officers who attended BOLC II atone of the other sites will travel to Fort Sillfor BOLC III training.

Scheduling the BOLC classes will becoordinated throughout TRADOC.

“All four BOLC II sites will have to starton the same day ... graduate the sameday,” Grigg said. “All 13 TRADOC schoolsthat run OBC will have to adjust their

BOLC III start dates based on BOLC IIgraduations.”

After graduating from BOLC III, someofficers will receive their first assignment,while others will receive more trainingsuch as the two-week Stryker transitioncourse, Dooley said.

The current courses lieutenants attendhave focused on specialty training withoutfocusing on basic Soldiering skills ormaintaining skills acquired duringprecommissioning training.

“You might be qualified with a weapon

24 months before you came to OBC, andthat might be the last time you qualifiedwith a weapon,” Dooley said.

Grigg said he knows how valuable thetraining will be for lieutenants.

“I remember when I was a lieutenantand a fire-direction officer in a battery. Ofcourse, Fort Sill had trained me very wellon how to put together my firing charge ...and compute fire missions,” he said. Butwhen it came to arranging perimetersecurity, put together a guard mount forthe firing point or even oversee hisSoldiers’ personal hygiene in the field,Grigg said he had no experience to draw

on.“Those are the things we have just

relied upon the units to train lieutenantshow to do. Before the BOLC concept camealong, the institutional schoolhouses ofTRADOC taught technical skills. Therewas just not a big emphasis placed onwarrior skills, Soldier skills (and) fieldcraftkind of skills. Now we realize it is some-thing we have to invest some time in. Ithink it is a great idea,” Grigg said.

FORT HOOD, Texas (TRADOC NewsService, March 22, 2005) – Set amongfree-range cattle pastures, 78th Division(Training Support) Soldiers, primarily from2nd Brigade of Fort Drum, N.Y., preparedfor their upcoming deployment to Iraq.

Their preparation included need-to-know information for survival: squadreaction when entering and clearing abuilding; convoy operations; and combatlifesaving, for instance.

The 78th Soldiers, comprised oftrainers themselves, ordinarily are theinstructors to National Guard and ArmyReserve Soldiers in the Northeast.However, under the Multinational SecurityTransition Command-Iraq, the PatriotBrigade’s new mission will use their skillsto train Iraqi Public Order units.

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior has turned

to Public Order units to help in cities wherethe police force has not been establishedor has been plagued with insurgencyactivity. Iraqi Public Order units have athreefold role. They deal with large-scaledisobedience, reinforce local police effortsand defeat insurgent activities.

“We have staffs and leaders who areexperts at teaching, coaching andmentoring,” said Col. Skip Davis, 2ndBrigade commander. “Keep in mind: for usto be successful in Iraq, we must trainIraqis to train themselves. The mostimportant element is having Iraqi leaders

accept changes and sustain what weteach.”

Training-support brigades focus intentlyon preparing Reserve Component Soldiersand units to meet Army standards and fortheir roles in the event of mobilization.During the past year, 2nd Brigade hastrained thousands of 42nd Infantry“Rainbow” Division Soldiers for the rolesthey are now serving in in Iraq.

“This new task, for us, crosses over into

an advisory role, so our training support’soriginal function mirrors the missionprofile,” said Davis.

“We are not going to Iraq to be theirleaders; we are going to help and supporttheir leadership with training,” saidCommand Sgt. Maj. Michael Bolduc, 2ndBrigade command sergeant major.

“Taking Soldiers with years of profes-sional experience in combat who haveacted in roles of trainers and coaches willpositively impact the success of themission,” added Davis.

“Being on the cutting edge of what thefuture forces of Iraq will look like speaksenormously of the 78th Division Soldiers’competence,” said Maj. Gen. Wayne Erck,78th Division commander.

In the end, the success of the MNSTC-Ioperation could have an effect on thenumber of coalition forces needed forfuture deployments.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. (TRADOCNews Service, March 16, 2005) – Soldiers,airmen, sailors, Marines and civiliansgathered on historic Brown Parade Field towelcome Maj. Gen. Barbara G. Fast, theU.S. Army Intelligence Center and FortHuachuca’s new commanding general,during her assumption-of-commandceremony March 16.

More than 500 service members at theirpolished and pressed best stood on the120-year-old parade field awaiting her firstofficial review of her troops. Fast said thepeople on the parade field were just asmall representation of the greatest

service members she’s ever known.The major general reviewed her Fort

Huachuca team with Gen. Kevin P.Byrnes, commanding general, U.S. ArmyTraining and Doctrine Command, and Brig.Gen. Brian A. Keller, deputy commandinggeneral, U.S. Army Intelligence Center andFort Huachuca, and the ceremony’scommander of troops.

“Today is a great day for the Army aswe welcome a top-notch commander tothe Intel School and Fort Huachuca,”Byrnes said.

“We’re entrusting the vital military-

intelligence mission to a most gifted leaderand combat veteran … with an infectiousenthusiasm,” Byrnes continued. “She’s theright leader to lead this pivotal organiza-tion … at this time of war.”

With Fast taking command, theIntelligence School should be preparingitself for a transition into an even morewarfighting-minded training center.

Fast spoke of working to improveSoldiers’ cultural awareness of the areasthey’re working in and improving thespeed with which battlefield lessons-

learned are being implemented in theclassroom.

“My first priority is to prepare readySoldiers to go into combat,” Fast said. “Wetrain relevant, ready Soldiers, sailors,airmen and Marines who go into harm’sway.”

Showing that “infectious enthusiasm,”Fast said she was excited about theintelligence personnel coming out of FortHuachuca. “[Intelligence] preventscasualties … it saves lives,” she said.

And Fast should know good intelligenceSoldiers; she is one herself. During her 28years of commissioned service, she’sserved in intelligence units all over theworld. Most recently, she served as the C-2 of the Multinational Force–Iraq duringOperation Iraqi Freedom. She’s also beenat the helm of Fort Huachuca before asthe deputy commanding general ofUSAIC&FH.

Fast holds a bachelors degree inGerman, a master’s degree in businessadministration and a doctorate of laws.

FORT BENNING, Ga. (TRADOC News

Service, March 31, 2005) – “It’s the best ofthe past, fine-tuned.” When pressed, that’show Maj. Michael McNally described the2005 Best Ranger Competition April 22-25.

As the operations officer for BRC’s hostunit, the Ranger Training Brigade, McNallyis one of a “panel of planners” who beganblueprinting the 22nd annual event lastfall.

As always, RTB officials are keeping atight lip about the details – a skeletaldescription will be released on the eve ofcompetition. But McNally revealed thismuch: the planners relied heavily on

feedback from last year’s BRC, when thewartime optempo cut the number ofcompetitors to an all-time low: 18 two-manteams. Of the 36 competitors, 21 werecombat veterans.

“They said they wanted it to be morefocused on military skills,” McNally said.“Last year, we focused mostly on fitnessand endurance, and we’ll continue that, ofcourse. But we’re definitely stressingpractical military skills and events thisyear.”

The BRC is a 60-hour “Ranger Olym-pics” of sorts. It was established in 1982with the objective of identifying the best

two-man Ranger team in the Army throughback-to-back, high-intensity events.

Teams are awarded points based ontime and precision. Competitors frequentlycatch short naps here and there, depend-ing on how early they complete eachevent, because no sleep is “programmed”into the schedule.

In a typical year, 50 teams start, andless than half finish.

Still, each year, planners strive to makethe competition more challenging, McNallysaid, and Rangers from around the world – now from the Army, Air Force and Marines

 – volunteer to compete for the title.Though new events or twists on old

events are added each year, BRC plan-ners stay true to the Ranger roots, McNallysaid. Some events are designed to testskills the Rangers would use on today’sbattlefield, and others, like the hatchetthrow, harken back to the days of Maj.Robert Rogers, the 18th century Rangerpioneer for whom the RTB’s Camp Rogersis named. The competition begins and

ends at Camp Rogers, and most of theaction takes place within 60 miles of thecamp.

McNally said planners for this year’sBRC took a close look at past competi-tions and drew from what they believedwere the most challenging events.

Though no one’s confirming or denying,this year’s competitors can expect to betested on their marksmanship, landnavigation and water skills. They cancount on a roadmarch, a physical-fitnesstest, spot jump and obstacle course.

The public can count on plenty ofexcitement, said Elsie Jackson, public-affairs specialist for Fort Benning. TheBRC typically draws thousands of specta-

tors. The Day Stakes on Todd Field andthe Water Confidence Course at VictoryPond are “very spectator friendly,” Jacksonsaid.

The BRC also draws more mediaattention to Fort Benning than any otherevent, she said. National media, includingthe Outdoor Life Network and ESPN, arefrequent guests. This year’s competitionwill be aired on the Military Channel June6.

 — The senior officers in charge of trainingthe U.S. military met at Fort LeavenworthFeb. 25 to discuss training and developingofficers who are capable and comfortable

operating in a Joint environment.The Interservice Training Summit,

hosted by U.S. Army Training and DoctrineCommand commanding general Gen.Kevin P. Byrnes, was attended by thetraining leaders of the Navy, Marine Corps,Air Force and Coast Guard.

Adm. Edmund P. Giambastiani Jr.,commander of U.S. Joint Forces Com-mand at Norfolk, Va., was the summit’skeynote speaker.

“Our nation’s forces will always fightJointly, which means we must train andeducate as we fight,” Giambastiani said.He added that the services are incorporat-ing Jointness into current operations, “butwe need to push Joint concepts harder.”

“Current operations are pullingJointness deeper into your ranks, furtherinto your units and earlier into any of youroperations,” he said.

The admiral said Joint forces are more

powerful than any single service, or anyinteragency or multinational group. Heemphasized that Joint forces need speed

 — not just physical speed or precisionweapons, but leaders with mental speedand situational awareness.

“Future Joint operators must becomfortable with change and innovation,”Giambastiani said.

Giambastiani told the other leaders thathe believes they face three collective

challenges — challenges that no individuamilitary service can resolve on its own.

The first challenge is to provide trainedand ready Joint task forces to combatantcommanders. Giambastiani said combat-ant commanders don’t have time to trainand educate JTFs. And while his com-mand is working with JTFs on the opera-tional level, it is important for the servicesto emphasize Jointness at all levels oftraining and professional military educa-

tion.The next challenge is to institutionalize

Joint training and education, Giambastianisaid.

With the National Defense University,JFCOM currently presents the CapstoneJoint Operations Module for newlyselected flag and general officers, thePinnacle Course for two- and three-starJoint task force commanders and theKeystone Course for senior-enlisted

leaders. Giambastiani said the servicesmust institutionalize Joint concepts at theirlevels and embed a common Joint contextinto exercises, experiments and educa-tional settings.

The last challenge Giambastianioutlined was enabling interdependence inall Joint operations. The services mustpractice the relationships of supporting orbeing supported, he said.

Giambastiani added that the servicesmust ensure components are fully inte-grated and interoperable across the force;

they must establish a culture that iscomfortable with change and innovation;and they must produce capabilities that hecalled “born Joint”: interoperable fromconception. Finally, he said, the services

must leverage their core competencies tomaximize the Joint experience andeducation.

The Feb. 25 training summit was thesecond for the armed services. The firstwas hosted by the Air Force at RandolphAFB, Texas.

 Army’s top chefs cross spatulasin culinary battle

FORT LEE, Va. (TRADOC NewsService, March 17, 2005) – More than 200military chefs traded in their body armor forwhite coats and went spatula to spatula forthe 30th annual U.S. Army Culinary ArtsCompetition that began March 7 at FortLee and ran through March 18.

Competitions range from preparingfour-course meals and sculpting lavishpastries to the Army field cooking event.

A panel of certified judges from the

American Culinary Foundation includedthe executive pastry chief of CaesarsPalace in Las Vegas and Fritz Sonnen-schmidt, chairman of the AmericanAcademy of Chefs.

Much like some cooking competitionsseen on television today, the Senior ChefCompetition included a mystery basketthat forced competitors to create menusquickly on their feet.

“It’s a skill they should be able toaccomplish without too much difficulty,”said Chief Warrant Officer 3 DavidLongstaff, chief of Craft Skills TrainingBranch, U.S. Army Center for Excellence-Subsistence, part of the Army’s Quarter-master Center and School at Fort Lee.

Each competitor had 30 minutes to plana menu, followed by four hours of intensechopping, slicing, dicing, blending andmixing ingredients to prepare a four-course meal for judging. After preparation,the competitors had one hour to serveeach of the four courses.

“Proper techniques in the kitchen willdetermine what follows through in thetaste,” said judge Rudy Speckamp, acertified master chef and one of this year’s

 judges. He said that the total package of

eye appeal, aroma and taste are integralparts of the overall success of the menu.

Competitors are expected to exhibit ahigh standard of technical expertise, menuchoice and execution of the meal to earnthe prestigious title of Senior Army Chef ofthe Year. This year’s competition featureda wide range of expertise as well asvarying rank.

The most junior was Pfc. ChristopherZimmerman from Fort Campbell, Ky. But

despite his rank, Zimmerman was nostranger to the Army culinary program. Agraduate of the Western Culinary Institute,he served two years in the Army Reserveas a food-service specialist, followed by

two years of active duty before leaving theArmy.

Zimmerman then worked as a sou chefin Louisiana and the wine country ofCalifornia. He said he was watchingtelevision and saw a program about theArmy Culinary Competition and, aftersome thought, contacted a recruiter andre-joined the Army.

On the opposite spectrum of theculinary competition, Soldiers had few

utensils and limited ingredients in the field-cooking event.

Chefs faced the pressure of preparing50 meals in cramped space with very littleroom for error.

Teams of four Soldiers marched intotheir mobile kitchen trailers and tookinventory of equipment. With a mysterybasket of ingredients featuring pork chopsthe chefs sketched a plan of attack.

Mobile burner units lit up at 8:30 a.m.,launching the competition into full-battlecooking. Two senior food-service judgesfrom Fort Lee closely observed the teamsthroughout the morning. Like hawks, theywatched the Soldiers butcher meats,

knead dough, sauté onions and maintainsanitation procedures to meet the 11:30a.m. deadline.

Designed to try the Soldiers in fieldcookery and teamwork, the event testedhow the teams used their equipment,planned, prepared and served their meals.Points were awarded for sanitation, timing,techniques, presentation, nutrition andenhancement. Major points were awardedfor flavor, taste, texture, temperature and

doneness.

Given limited resources, Soldierstackled the challenge of coming up with acreative way to “sell” their product to the

 judges, said Chief Warrant Officer 4 ArnoldMontiel, Basic Food Services TrainingDivision chief and judge.

“This experience encourages theSoldiers to maximize the use of all theiringredients to better prepare meals whenthey are out in the field. It teaches themthere is always another way to prepare the

same menu,” Montiel said.

“Anyone can make a pork chop,” saidCommand Sgt. Maj. Clinton Jackson, foodservice sergeant major at Fort Drum, N.Y.“Creativity will be a key element in thecompetition, but the advantage may go tothe teams who have more experiencecooking in the field.”

Benning tests modified reserve chute

better chance of being killed on I-185between here and Exit 7 than jumping outof a military aircraft.”

That’s how Command Sgt. Maj.Donovan Watts assessed the evolution ofthe Army’s parachute.

Watts, the 1st Battalion (Airborne),507th Parachute Infantry Regiment’s topnoncommissioned officer, detailed thelatest modification to the reserve chuteMarch 15 as the March 17 graduatingclass prepared to jump.

Honor graduate Pvt. Josh Inmon made

his own assessment.“I still get nervous about the jump,

about remembering what to do and whento do it,” he said. “But I’m not nervousabout the equipment. I trust it completely.”

Fort Benning’s airborne students havebeen training soft loop, center-pull reserveparachutes for six months.

The 82nd Airborne Division at FortBragg, N.C., has them, and the rest of theArmy will gradually make the switch fromthe right-side release, Watts said. That willlikely take two years to complete.

The modifications, which took two yearsto research and test, include the reposi-

“The Army is so focused on safety andperformance issues that we’ve perfectedthe parachute and now we’re working onthe ‘what ifs,’” Watts said. “The chancesare you’ll never have to use it.”

“We must have officers equipped with the mental tools to deal with the environments they’re dealing with: basic supply;troop-leading procedures; tactics, techniques and procedures that orient them on specific types of operations. But things

change; there are a lot of complicators in the [current] environment. … When they roll out the gate, a lot of things happen thatupset their apple cart: a frag order could be issued to move to and support a different organization, [watch over] celebratory

fire, [support] media, [be ready for] events that cause some unexpected types of actions for that platoon: ambushes, etc. Howthe lieutenant thinks or how the sergeant thinks through actioning that unexpected requirement is key, and there’s no

doctrinal prescription for that. He’s got to have the mental tools to draw quickly on a framework, develop solution sets – not asolution – quickly assess the best possible actions and then take immediate action. … They’ve got to be quicker at sorting

through information, using it properly, but also – as these different complicators present themselves on the battlefield –they’ve got to draw down deep on some of the fundamentals they learned and then figure out, think it through and come up

FORT JACKSON, S.C. (TRADOCNews Service, March 31, 2005) – Gen.Kevin P. Byrnes, commanding general,Training and Doctrine Command, visitedFort Jackson March 25 and was the guestspeaker at the basic combat traininggraduation at Darby Field.

Standing in front of the 952 graduates,Byrnes began his speech sympathizingwith their discomfort at being in formationduring an unseasonably hot day.

“It is warm today, and I’m going tobreak with tradition here for a minute – Iwant you Soldiers in the ranks to take 15

seconds to readjust your berets, wipe yourbrows, shake a few things out,” hecommanded. “Drill sergeants, make ithappen.”

After thanking everyone for attending,Byrnes spent the next few minutesaddressing the achievements of the newSoldiers as well as the efforts of their drillsergeants.

“Today, more than 40 percent of our drillsergeants are combat veterans. And thatnumber is rising,” he said. “When we askfor drill sergeants, only the best apply. Inour drill sergeants we place the responsi-bility for the very treasure of our nation – 

our sons and daughters – and we askthem to transform civilians into Soldiers; toinstill values, discipline and the WarriorEthos. You will forget just about everyleader you work for in your time in theservice, but you will never forget the lookor the name of that drill sergeant.

“Now to the Soldiers: your training’sbeen challenging and you’ve met everychallenge head on and you’ve succeeded.You’ve overcome self-doubt, fear; you’vepushed yourself mentally and physicallybeyond what you thought were your limits

 – you’ve gutted it out when it got tough.

“We never forget Warrior Ethos and thevalues we learned here. We will use them

as a guide in all that we do as Soldiers inthis great Army of ours.”

Byrnes then addressed the audience,specifically the graduates’ families, to easeany doubts they might harbor.

“To the parents and loved ones heretoday, I assure you your sons and daugh-ters made the right choice. I share anyconcerns you might have about serviceduring a time of war. My son, too, isundergoing initial military training, and he’sat Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.”

Continuing to laud the achievements ofSoldiers, Byrnes called Soldiering “the

most respected profession in the nation.”

Byrnes took command of TRADOC inNovember 2002, taking the reins of 33military schools and centers at 16 Armyinstallations.

His visit to Fort Jackson also includedobserving Soldiers from 2nd Battalion,39th Infantry Regiment, as they partici-pated in convoy live-fire training. He atelunch with the unit, sharing knowledge withthe Soldiers and listening to their experi-ences in BCT.

Byrnes finished his visit following 2/39th

through contemporary operationalenvironment training.

FORT BENNING, Ga. (TRADOC NewsService, March 7, 2005) – “I was runningwith my battle buddies, chasing someguys into a treeline, and I could hearbullets ricocheting off the trees around me.I could hear bombs blowing up on oneside and bullets whipping through the air.

“I slipped and fell into a puddle, and gotback up and kept running. I rememberbeing wet, covered in mud, freezing andscared of being shot, but I had my buddieswatching my back. For me, that memorysums up what it means to be an infantry-

man.”For Sgt. Israel Sanchez, 2nd Battalion,

29th Infantry Regiment, this story of onenight during his deployment in Iraq bringsup many memories of tough times andcamaraderie in the infantry.

Sanchez remembers why it wasimportant to him to become an infantry-man.

“As a kid, I remember seeing Soldiersmarching in parades,” he said. “Theylooked so proud, so disciplined, that Iknew I wanted to be in the Army. I wantedthat blue cord hanging from my shoulderto stand out as an infantryman.”

The history of the American infantrymanprecedes the founding of America.Leading up to the Revolutionary War, eachcolony had its own militia, and the colonieslacked a cohesive defense. GeorgeWashington and the Continental Congressunified the militias in June 1775 andestablished the infantry. The fighting forceswere a success, and today the infantrymakes up 13 percent of the Army.

The infantry is important because itstroops are the force on the ground whocan secure an area, said Master Sgt. GaryFox, career-management noncommis-

sioned officer, Office of InfantryProponency.

“It takes foot Soldiers to hold groundagainst combatants,” Fox said. “Thesupport units and the other combat armsare important, but it couldn’t be donewithout the infantry.”

It takes 13 weeks of basic training andadvanced infantry training to become an

infantryman, withadditional follow-on

training after the Soldiersare assigned to a unit.Infantrymen can train atmany schools likeRanger, airborne,Pathfinder, masterfitness, combatives,Javelin gunner, mastergunner, anti-tank weap-ons and more.

As infantry officersclimb the ranks, profes-sional-developmentcourses include InfantryOfficer Basic Course,

Infantry Captains CareerCourse, intermediate-level education, SeniorService College and theArmy War College.Infantry NCOs go toPrimary LeadershipDevelopment Course,Basic NCO Course,Advanced NCO Course,First Sergeants Courseand Sergeant MajorsAcademy.

 joined the Army, I wanted to go to the 82ndAirborne because I knew I would get to dothings I could never do in the civilianworld.”

situationally aware and can think on hisfeet, said Capt. Randy Garcia, InfantryBranch representative.

“The infantry isn’t about being a grunttoting a gun through the woods some-where,” Garcia said. “It’s about leadingSoldiers and developing the communica-tion and analytical skills needed to takecharge. Today’s infantryman is a muchbetter Soldier than at any time in the past.”

The Army’s determination to train thebest Soldier possible has resulted in

changes in the infantry in the last fewyears. In the past, anyone who chose tobe infantry came in as 11X, infantrymanunidentified. After basic training, an 11Xchose to become either an 11B infantry-man, 11C infantry mortarman, 11H heavyanti-armor weapons infantryman or 11Mmechanized infantryman.

The IOY program manager inDCSOPS&T, Renee Estephanos, said thatthe judges looked for instructors who wentabove and beyond the mechanics andwere good at “engaging and explaining.”

Chaplain (Maj.) MarkPenfold

Penfold serves as the Transportation

School’s chaplain and is a primaryinstructor for the Transportation OfficersBasic Course at Fort Eustis. As instructorfor the Inter-Modal Operations Division atthe Transportation School, he expands thenormal role of the school’s chaplain byteaching classes such as role of the Armychaplain, counseling, Army writing, oralbriefing and presentation, stress manage-ment, suicide prevention, Army Values/ ethics/ethical decision-making and

memorial ceremonies/casualty notificationand survivor-assistance officer duties.

Penfold participates in every field-training exercise for TOBC classes andmentors more than 90 officer basic coursestudents.

“I find that students have preconceivedideas of a chaplain’s role,” he wrote in anessay for his nomination packet. “The factthat I teach other leadership classes, aswell as participate as a trainer in thestudent [FTXs] and situational-trainingexercises, challenges their paradigm. … Istrive to help them see the ethical implica-tions of every decision and how theirdecisions will affect the mission, positivelyor negatively.

“Being a leader in today’s Army is not just about tactics, techniques and proce-dures, but about becoming the right kind ofperson who is able to understand the dual

nature of our Army’s focus of ‘mission first,people always!’ Our Soldiers will accom-plish any mission if they are convincedtheir leaders make the right decisions andwill do everything in their ability and powerto care for them, their fellow Soldiers andtheir families,” he said.

Chief Warrant Officer 4Pamela Callaway

Callaway is chief of the AdvancedInvestigations Training Branch, MilitaryPolice Investigations Division, at the MPSchool, as well as the senior instructor

and subject-matter expert in forensicscience, crime-scene processing andphysical evidence identification, recovery,collection, preservation and examination.She is responsible for training more than1,000 multi-service and multinationalstudents a year.

Callaway, who holds three master’sdegrees and has been a CID special agentfor 19 years, recounted in her nominationpacket that one of her instructors set heron the path she is on today. “In 1985, Iwas a young, fresh-faced sergeant, astudent of the CID Basic Course, andeager to learn all there was to know about

being a criminal investigator,” she wrote.“Of all the instructors I learned from duringthose 16 weeks, the one affectionatelydubbed ‘Doctor Death’ was the one whomade the most lasting impression. It wasso lasting that here I am, 19 years later,emulating him.

“One difference is that, in 1985,forensics was not the household word it istoday. In many ways, teaching deathinvestigations has been made easy by the

newfound interest in the field. The chal-lenges, of course, are keeping up with thedaily changes in technology and forensiccapabilities, and refuting misconceptionsof what is forensically possible as seen ontelevision. With the emphasis on physicalevidence in both real and make-believe,expectations have flourished beyond thereasonable. It’s up to me to be thegatekeeper of what is real, and it’s both achallenge and a privilege to direct youngand impressionable minds to applycommon sense and logical deductivethinking.”

Sgt. 1st Class MichaelShouse

Shouse is an instructor/writer with theArmor Center’s Bradley AutomotiveBranch and NCOIC of the military-occupation specialty 63M30 basic non-commissioned officers course. Betweenhis Army assignments and his ownprofessional-development efforts, he hasbecome a recognized expert on theBradley Fighting Vehicle.

“I love to teach and see the results ofthat teaching effort,” he wrote in hisnomination packet. “The results showwhen that young sergeant graduates withso much pride and knowledge. When I seehim pass those tests that are required ateach level of his training, and see thepride written all over his face, I havepersonal gratification in knowing that I did

my job and I did my job well.“I care very much for the Soldiers Iteach,” he wrote. “I give it all I have, andthere is no limit to the time I take inpreparing for a class. I have a burningdesire to make a difference in the life ofeach Soldier. I want each of them to besuccessful, so I feel I must motivate andinspire them to be the best they can be.

Andrew WilburWilbur instructs the MOS 21B course at

the Engineer School. He is a former drillsergeant who served 21 years in the Armybefore he retired – 10 of those as an

instructor.“My passion for instructing led me into

my current job,” he wrote in his nominationpacket. “My main focus in what I teach isto share my (active-duty) experiences withnew Soldiers and prepare them for thetough battles they will face as theycontinue to serve their country, whether inpeace or in war.

“I always lead by example and insistthose who work with me do the same,” he

Master Sgt. VernonGarcia

Garcia is assigned to 9502nd TrainingDetachment (Noncommissioned Officer

Education System), 6th Brigade, 95thDivision (IT). She is coordinator for theTotal Army Instructor Training Course andSmall Group Instructor Training Course,and serves as primary instructor for 6thBrigade, supporting the Total Army SchoolSystem battalions within 95th Division.

“The courses I teach … are the basicfoundation for all instructors and, ulti-mately, the foundation upon which theArmy is built,” Garcia wrote in her nomina-tion packet. “If I did not care about thequality of instruction I deliver, the knowl-edge I impart, or the lasting impression Imake on the students attending ‘my’

courses, I have failed them as an instruc-tor.

“My greatest challenge as an instructoris how I bridge the enormous learning gapthat today’s classroom presents. Studentscome from a multitude of diverse educa-

tion levels and learning styles. Keeping farends of the learning spectrum activelyengaged in the learning experience isalmost an hourly challenge,” she wrote. “Imust keep the collegiate student, who isconditioned to absorb large amounts ofinformation in small periods of time andhas well-developed study skills, fromthinking the course is boring, while at thesame time, try to reach the student whohas not been in the active learning

process for years.”

Sgt. 1st Class JerrellWright

Wright is the course manager for theMilitary Entrance Processing StationGuidance Counselor Course and servesas a subject-matter expert on the develop-ment team of the Army National Guard’ssales program, “comprehensive communi-cation skills.” He trained National Guardleadership and guidance counselors onCCS and supported Guard recruiting andretention with 17 mobile training events

during FY04.“My mission is to equip the Army

National Guard with well-trained recruitingand retention NCOs capable of recruitingquality individuals, reducing attrition and

retaining MOS-qualified Soldiers,” Wrightwrote in his nomination packet. “I con-stantly remind myself and attempt toconvey the Warrior Ethos mentality in all Ido as well as those I train. Albert Einsteinsaid, ‘Not everything that is measured hasmeaning, and not everything that hasmeaning is measured.’ I believe I contrib-ute greatly by knowing the difference!

“The greatest challenge I have as aninstructor is keeping pace with change,” hesaid. “In our contemporary operationalenvironment, changes are rapid and occurfrequently. Change is required in theapproach and methods we employ to trainand motivate Soldiers. Turret , the Fort Knox, Ky., installationpaper, placed second in the category of“metro-format newspapers.” Turret , whichis part of the Installation ManagementAgency Southeast Region, supports theArmor Center and School commandinggeneral.

The Fort Jackson Leader , FortJackson, S.C., earned second placeamong the tabloid-format newspapers.The Leader is also part of IMA Southeastand supports the U.S. Army TrainingCenter at Fort Jackson, which includesTRADOC schools such as the adjutantgeneral, chaplain, finance, recruiting and

retention and drill sergeant schools, aswell as a large initial-entry training center.

Spc. Service, March 31, 2005) – Capt. CharlesE. Greene received the Bronze Star withvalor device and the Purple Heart fromVice Chief of Staff of the Army Gen.Richard Cody in a ceremony March 24 inInfantry Hall.

Greene’s awards stemmed from hisdeployment to Iraq from September 2003to February 2004. Greene worked as anadviser to the 22nd Battalion of the IraqiIntervention Force. While assigned to theunit, he was involved in several combatengagements and was shot in the headduring a sniper ambush in Mosul.

Greene is currently serving as thedirector of professional military educationin the Infantry Center and School’sdirectorate of training.

His leadership, courage and tacticalproficiency were essential to the accom-plishment of the unit’s mission to providesecurity and stability to the region before,during and after the January elections,according to his award narrative.

It is highly unusual for the vice chief ofstaff to award individual decorations. Codytraveled to Fort Benning for Greene’saward ceremony at the request of Gen.David Petraeus. Petraeus, the Multi-

National Security Transition Command-Iraq commander, hand-picked Greene forthe assignment with the 22nd but couldn’tcome back to the United States to awardhim his decorations.

Greene’s wife, Cynthia, said herhusband is a humble man, and she wasn’tsurprised when he chose not to make anyremarks during the ceremony.

“He’s one of those people whosereputation speaks for itself. His uniformspeaks for itself,” she said.

Cynthia said humility isn’t the only traitthat makes Greene the man he is. He is

known around the world for his courage,determination and personal pride.As an enlisted Soldier with the 75th

Ranger Regiment in 1990, he was in atraining accident involving mortar rounds.He was sprayed with shrapnel up anddown his body. He returned to work in amatter of weeks. He still carries theshrapnel.

In 2003, he fell from a deerstand inTexas and broke six vertabrae in his spine.Doctors predicted he would be unable towork for five to six months. Greene said,“Nobody is going to take my command.”

He returned to duty 30 days later and wasin Iraq 90 days after that.Lying in bed on life support after

surgery in Germany for his gunshotwound, he wrote a note to the medicalstaff. “OK, you’ve patched me up. Whencan I go back?” it read.

“He’s always been this kind of guy,”Cynthia said. “I wouldn’t expect anythingelse.”

Greene continues to recover from hiswounds. He has lost hearing in his left earand has problems with his equilibrium, buthis doctors are impressed with his

recovery and say his eardrum has begunto rebuild itself.

FORT BENNING, Ga. (TRADOC NewsService, March 11, 2005) – It took Capt.Clint Cox almost five years to graduatefrom college, but the fact he couldn’tdecide on a major hasn’t had an impacton his career in the Army.

March 1, the Army named Cox as oneof the recipients of the Gen. DouglasMacArthur Leadership Award, designed torecognize company-grade officers whodemonstrate the ideals for whichMacArthur stood: duty, honor and country.

Nominees must first meet height andweight standards and pass an ArmyPhysical Fitness Test. A panel thenevaluates each nominee’s file andconsiders overall leadership performance,technical and tactical competence andcommitment to Army values.

Cox has been living with the Army andits values since he was born. An Armybrat whose father was a Signal Corpsofficer, he said his decision to become aninfantryman was an easy one.

“Generally, everyone works for theinfantry,” he said. “So if I wanted to be aleader, the best way to have the mostimpact was in the infantry.”

The panel selected Cox as the Army’sTraining and Doctrine Command recipi-ent, looking at his performance since hewas commissioned in the infantry in 1996.

His first assignment in Germanyexposed him to the mechanized infantry,

where he served in the 1st InfantryDivision in Schweinfurt. Cox deployed toBosnia and Macedonia and was recog-nized with a V Corps Distinguished

Leadership award.After attending the Armor AdvancedCourse, Cox was assigned to FortCampbell, Ky. His time in the 101stAirborne Division, he said, was his bestand most influential assignment so far.

He commanded an infantry companyduring Operation Enduring Freedom inAfghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedomin Iraq. During OIF, his company wasinstrumental in seizing Baghdad’s interna-tional airport and military district.

“I was in the right place at the right timeand with great Soldiers and noncommis-sioned officers,” Cox said. “That resoundsthe most with me. I was also fortunate towork with great leaders and have goodmentors.”

Cox requested a TRADOC assignmentafter company command – partly, he said,to take a break, but to also be in a position

to continue to give something back to theArmy.

His current contribution is as thecommander of the Army’s only Experimen-tal Force Company, which stood up in May2004. The unit conducts all testing andevaluation of new infantry equipment,weapons and doctrine.

“We’re working on the future of theinfantry and the Army,” he said. “To be ableto touch and influence the future is reallyrewarding.”

Cox, the only TRADOC recipient, will join the 26 other MacArthur LeadershipAward recipients in Washington, D.C., for

several days of events ending with theformal award presentation May 25.

“I’m humbled,” Cox said. “It came out ofnowhere.”

Soldier becomes an American,re-enlists to fight terrorism

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. (TRADOCNews Service, March 7, 2005) – “It wouldbe better to die in Iraq than get out of theArmy right now.”

Those are pretty strong words for anAmerican Soldier, especially during a timeof war. Their power becomes even moreimpressive when you consider the personspeaking them has only been an Americanfor a few months.

“My second re-enlistment was more

meaningful than my first one because Ihad the American flag behind me, and Iwas an American citizen,” said Sgt.Joseph Mutaku.

Mutaku is a native of Kenya whogained his citizenship last November. OnJan. 5, the 25R audiovisual specialistdisplayed his commitment to his newcountry by re-enlisting in a ceremony heldat the Intelligence Electronic Warfaremaintenance facility at Fort Huachuca.The Soldier is assigned to Headquartersand Headquarters Company, 111th MilitaryIntelligence Brigade.

Mutaku’s motivation was simple. Hewanted to fight back.

“Terrorists have attacked both mycountries: Kenya and the United States,”he said. “Almost 280 Kenyans were killedwhen terrorists bombed the U.S. embassyin Nairobi; 11 Americans were killed in thatattack. Kenya is a small country, and wecould do nothing. America is a super-power; if they don’t do anything, then noother country will do anything, either.

“America is doing the right thing byfighting the war against terrorism, becauseif we don’t take care of this problem now,then our children will have to,” he said.

“When I hear Soldiers saying they don’tagree with the war and are getting out, Ithink that is a shame.”

Mutaku immigrated with his parents toBaltimore in 1996. He became interestedin joining the Army because of theopportunity to learn a skill and further hiseducation. Since moving to Fort Huachucafrom his first duty station in Hawaii,Mutaku has completed almost three yearstowards a degree in computer science.

“I like the training I get in the Army,” he

said. “Recently I completed a class in Net-plus, and now I’m attending the BasicInstaller Course. These were offered to methrough my unit.”

Mutaku’s supervisor, Sgt. 1st. ClassIvan Kipp, was an active and integral partin the Soldier’s re-enlistment decisionprocess.

“I was excited to hear of Mutaku’sdecision to re-enlist,” Kipp said. “(He) istotally unselfish when it comes to takingcare of missions and other Soldiers; heassumes the leadership position when I’mnot here.”

Talking further about his re-enlistment,

Mutaku related how the brigade’s careercounselor, Staff Sgt. Eboni Britton, wentthe extra mile to get him an assignment tothe Army Audiovisual Center in Washing-ton, D.C.

“At first, they weren’t offering me

anything I wanted, but (Britton) kept tellingme she was going to get something for me – finally, right before Christmas, she did,”Mutaku said. “This assignment will give memore training and experiences, move mecloser to my family, and maybe I candeploy from there.”

Asked what he liked best and leastabout the Army, Mutaku said the pay waswhat he liked least. “I think if we are goingto defend America, we should get morepay,” he said.

The Army values and the camaraderiewere the best things about the Army,according to the sergeant. “Every where I

go in the Army, I meet great people anddevelop relationships that will last,” hesaid. “The Army Values are importantguidelines to live by, no matter where youare.”

FORT MONROE, Va. (TRADOC NewsService, March 14, 2005) – Fresh out ofairborne school, a young second lieuten-ant was told by a commander that deploy-ment with the unit would be out of thequestion despite the Soldier’s status as aplatoon leader.

That was 1979 at Fort Bragg, N.C. The

commander’s attitude at the time wasgender-based. He held the opinion thatwomen didn’t belong in the rough, toughworld of the XVIIIth Airborne, recalled Col.Jane F. Maliszewski, a career Soldier of 26years who was the newly commissionedofficer in question.

Today the colonel is Fort Monroe’shighest-ranking female officer and servesas chief information officer for U.S. ArmyTraining and Doctrine Command. Shecounts the Fort Bragg experience as heronly brush with blatant gender bias.

“At that time, the XVIIIth Airborne Corps

was part of a rapid-deployment force; ifsomething happened, we would be on aplane and gone within 18 hours. I was toldright up front by my commander, ‘I knowyou’re the platoon leader, but if we get thecall, you’re not going because you’re awoman.’ This was my first day on the job. Ididn’t say anything but thought, ‘Alright,we’re going to have to work on that one,’”she said with a slight chuckle at thememory.

Maliszewski said she proved worthy ofthe job by working hard and earning thetrust of nearly 90 Soldiers under hercommand. “I jumped out of airplanes. I

qualified with my weapon. I did everythingI was supposed to do,” she said. “(Thecommander’s comment) did not becomean issue because we never deployedduring my time there. But this was the firstand only time I was told I couldn’t dosomething as a Soldier.”

The encounter set the tone for the wayMaliszewski has approached her militarycareer ever since.

“Your personality and your competence

have to drive everything,” she said. “Attimes, you might take some good-natured

 joking, and I’m OK with that. I have runacross people who, in my earlier days, didhave a problem with women in positions ofauthority. Those were attitudinal things Iwould just work around. I never let it stopme.

“I have always been convinced thatwhat I’m trying to do is the right thing forthe Army and for the units I serve,” shesaid. “I always expect a lot from myself in

whatever I do. I drive myself the hardest,and I put in 100 percent.”

She applied that same fortitude duringa bout with breast cancer seven yearsago. The colonel does not dwell on theepisode except to say that she quicklyopted for surgery because she had hersights on a dream overseas assignment.

“At the time I was diagnosed, I wassupposed to move from Washington, D.C.,to Korea for a battalion commander’s

assignment. (It was) something I’d aspiredto do in the Army my entire career, andbreast cancer was not going to stop me,”said Maliszewski. “When the doctor toldme I would probably have to cancel myplans, I told him, ‘No, you don’t understand… do whatever you have to do to get meto Korea, because I’m going to be in Koreain 60 days.’ And I was.”

Recovery took about a year and did not

involve chemotherapy or radiation treat-ment. She was overseas as planned theentire time. “I took my 30 days’ convales-cent leave after the surgery and then wenton and commanded my battalion,” shesaid. “Nobody there ever knew – until nearthe end of my tour in 1999 during awomen’s health week of some kind.”

She recalled taking the floor during apresentation about breast-cancer aware-ness and recounting her story for the firsttime outside of immediate family circles.The colonel said it was probably hersingle-minded focus on doing a good jobas a commander that saw her through …that and having something to look forwardto each day.

Maliszewski acknowledged thatchallenges and obstacles are just facts oflife everyone faces. She said during oneassignment she was often asked aboutharassment and discrimination. She wasthe only female on a panel of seniorofficers from the U.S. Army War Collegethat toured university campuses to discusscurrent affairs.

“My answer was always: ‘The fact that(I’m) given the same opportunities (asmale Soldiers), paid the same and

expectations are the same shows that it’sa level playing field,” she stated firmly.

The colonel admitted joining the Armywas not part of her life’s plan. The ideawas as “far-fetched as the concept of livingon the moon” since she had no exposureto military life growing up in WashingtonTownship, N.J. During her sophomore yearat Rutgers University, she ambled over tothe school’s Army ROTC area with a friendone day during lunch. They both wound up

spending the summer in Fort Knox, Ky., atROTC basic camp.

“I just loved it … absolutely loved it. Ididn’t know anything about leadership atall or what I was getting into. I just reallytook to the military lifestyle, though. I wasalways patriotic … tearing up wheneverthe national anthem was played,”Maliszewski said with a beaming smile.“Anyway, we ended up signing up, andwe’re both still in. Making it as far as I

have in the Army is one of the things I’mproud of. Being promoted to colonel as awoman in the Army is a pretty significantevent.

“My career has certainly been morethan I could have imagined. Before cominghere in September 2003, I worked on theArmy staff at the Pentagon and had theopportunity to work with all the key staffand the secretary of the Army. It was awonderful opportunity to gain insight intohow decisions are made at the highestlevels and also to get the satisfaction ofknowing that my input was driving some of

the way the Army is going,” she said.Maliszewski said she enjoys the samesatisfaction today at Fort Monroe anddeems her role as TRADOC CIO her mostplum assignment. She manages all thetechnology for the command, setting

policies and procedures in the information-technology arena.

“The command climate here is wonder-ful. I feel like I’m given the freedom to dothe things I need to do in my job,” shesaid. “It’s been very rewarding, and it wassuch a challenge for me that I decided todelay my retirement for a year and stay.

“For me, the neat thing about the Armyis that I’ve had such a variety of jobs andassignments,” Maliszewski said. “Not all of

them were things I wanted to do or neces-sarily liked. But I have learned somethingvery critical out of every job, whether Iliked the assignment or not. EverythingI’ve done in the Army has been valuablefrom a professional and personal develop-ment standpoint. Every job I’ve had hasbeen important in the big picture of things.”

She also attributes her success to thepeople who have “mentored and nurtured”her and to the Soldiers she’s led over time.

“My success is really based on otherpeople’s influence and just the high qualityof people I have worked with. I’m proud of

my affiliation with so many dedicated menand women,” she said. “That brings me tothe way I view our Soldiers today. I reallyadmire men and women in the Army whohave kids. My husband (Douglas Herr) and

I don’t have any children. I have a lot ofrespect for those who are single parents,as well as the dual military couples whomanage to raise children while facingdeployments.

“Out of all the things I’ve done, and asmuch as I push myself to give 100percent, I’m not sure I could handle thattask. I have devoted my life and my energyto my work and to my husband. … What Ido pales in comparison. These Soldiers

are bringing up the future. Theirs is amassive effort,” she said.

The colonel holds a bachelor of arts inhistory and American studies fromDouglass College and a master’s degreein business administration from CampbellUniversity, N.C. She also has a master’s innational security strategy from the U.S.Army War College. She was commis-sioned in 1979 as a second lieutenant inthe Army from the Rutgers UniversityROTC program.

Among her awards are the DefenseMeritorious Service Medal and Army

Meritorious Service Medal. Also, sheearned the senior parachutist badge andwears the Office of the Secretary ofDefense badge and the HeadquartersDepartment of the Army Staff badge.

Incentive gains ROTC, Kentucky school

FORT KNOX, Ky. (TRADOC NewsService, March 7, 2005) – Andrea Meyerripped open the package and pulled out apair of white tube socks. With a greenstripe around the top, they were stitchedwith the words “Army ROTC.”

A naïve teen then, Meyer fearedaccepting the socks obligated her to some

sort of military service. So she sent themback.

Soon, another package arrived. Insidewere the socks and the Army’s request toaccept them without obligation.

Meyer, preparing to enter college, keptthem this time and decided to sign up for amilitary science class, figuring the leastshe could do was to get a peek at what theArmy offered. She performed so well in theclass, ROTC offered her a full scholarship.

Meyer committed to serve.There’s no telling where she might be

today had it not been for those socks.She might never have joined ROTC

almost 25 years ago. She might neverhave ended up with a career as a U.S.Army Reserve officer. And she might neverhave become one of Kentucky’s bestteachers, an achievement for which shewas honored recently.

Meyer received the 2005 WHAS-TV/ LG&E Foundation ExCEL Award for HardinCounty Schools in Kentucky. The annual

award recognizes the district’s topeducator with a golden apple trophy and$1,000 for instructional expenses.

Meyer, a Reserve major, teachesspecial education at Lincoln Trail Elemen-tary in Elizabethtown, Ky. For six years,she has transformed the lives of physicallyand developmentally challenged studentsand prepared them for not only for middleschool, but also for life.

Meyer approaches her students as she

would any other child. She doesn’tconsider their disabilities an excuse, butrather a point of motivation. What Meyerdoes for the children is push them tooverlook their disabilities, see theirstrengths and believe they can succeed.

“My passion for these children growsdeeper every day,” she said. “Everyonehas the capacity to learn and achieve, nomatter what your IQ is.”

Meyer said the award was as much thestudents’ as hers.

“They provide as much comfort to me

as I do to them,” she said. “I want them toget the attention. I wouldn’t be who I amwithout them.”

Meyer, 41, said the leadership skillsshe learned in ROTC and as a Reserveofficer serves her in the classroom. Withher students, she instills discipline, setsgoals and lays out expectations.

The students have taken to the militarypresence, too. They march in straight lineswhen they maneuver around the school.

Some children even demand that shepenalize them with pushups when theymake mistakes.

But the uniform makes many of thechildren uneasy. Several fear the Army willtake Meyer away from them and send heroverseas. One child who recently thoughtshe was shipping out hung onto her tokeep her from going.

Meyer, who began her career ineducation as a speech therapist, got intoteaching to make a difference in the livesof exceptional children.

“I wanted them to grow up and have

some of the same experiences other kidshave,” she said. “As a speech therapist, Icouldn’t make that difference.”

That difference is evident in thestudents.

Mike Byers, the retired Lincoln Trailprincipal who hired Meyer, has a grand-daughter in Meyer’s class. He attributesthe progress the girl has made to Meyer ’sability to excite children and bring out thebest in them.

“There’s a special connection between

Meyer and her students,” Byers said.Just ask the parents of Logan Rovinski.

When their son joined Meyer’s class threeyears ago, he drooled, struggled to keephis head up and couldn’t hold eatingutensils. Nowadays, he pays attention inclass and uses forks and spoons to feedhimself.

“She wants him to read and write andsucceed just as we do,” Greg and DonnaRovinski wrote in a letter recommending

Meyer for the honor. “She is just as excitedas we are with each and every accom-plishment he makes. Her tears for hissuccesses are just as genuine as ours.”

In proclaiming March 2 as AndreaMeyer Day in Hardin County, the county’s

 judge-executive reflected on the impactMeyer has had on the children.

“It’s no doubt Meyer’s class willremember her for the rest of their lives,”Harry Berry said.

Meyer, a native of Owensboro, Ky.,graduated in 1985 No. 1 in her class atMurray State University with a degree in

communication disorders. She expected toserve on active duty but was placed in theReserves.

On top of that, she was branchedengineer, something in which she had noexperience. But she reported to FortBelvoir, Va., eager to learn. In 21 weeks,she learned everything from laying pipesto installing electrical equipment.

After she graduated, her husband, anarmor officer, was sent to Fort Polk, La.But the Reserve unit there had no slot forher as an engineer, so she became a teamleader with a replacement detachment.

After three years, her husband wassent to Fort Knox, Ky. They later left forGermany and returned to Fort Knox.

Meyer wanted to become a trainingofficer, and she was given command of abasic-training unit. That was something ofa rarity, she said, because few womenhold such commands.

“The Soldiers were so shocked by it,but they were awesome,” she said.

Meyer took over during a time of turmoil

for the unit. The previous commander hadbeen relieved, and morale among theSoldiers was down.

But the trainees rallied around Meyer,who regularly conversed on a personallevel with them and became affectionatelyknown as “the ma’am.” They would chantbefore chowtime until she would appearfrom her office and acknowledge them.

Meyer has been with the 8th Brigade of

the 100th Division at Fort Knox for almostthree years. Her role involves ensuring theLeader’s Training Course at Fort Knox andLeader Development and AssessmentCourse at Fort Lewis, Wash., is mannedwith Reserve Soldiers to oversee rangesand other training sites.

Meyer reaches the 20-year servicemark with the Reserves in May. If shedoesn’t retire, she’ll appear before alieutenant colonel board in September.

Meyer isn’t sure what she will do. Partof what she is weighing is how to balancethe demands of teaching and serving asan officer without giving one up.

When she’s working for her unit, shepops in at the school each day to check onher students. When she’s teaching, shefields calls almost each day from one ofher Soldiers.

“There’s no one weekend a month” withthe Reserves, she said. “If you operate likethat as an officer, you’re not being func-tional for your unit.”

Gary Roedemeier, the WHAS-TVanchor who presented the ExCEL award,described Meyer as “the best of the best”in the teaching profession. He said thegolden apple is symbolic of students’ love

for their teacher.“Thank you for inspiring us,”

Roedemeier told Meyer. “With yourcommitment, you’re a beacon and a rolemodel for all the teachers who care for ourchildren.”

Looking back, Meyer said she wouldnot change anything about the way her lifeplayed out.

“Look what those socks did to me,” shesaid.

FORT MONROE, Va. (TRADOC NewsService, March 22, 2005) – The highest-ranking female Soldier in U.S. ArmyTraining and Doctrine Command partici-pated in Fort Monroe’s Women’s HistoryMonth observance March 11 at the posttheater.

Maj. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody, com-

mander of the Combined Arms SupportCommand and Fort Lee, Va., delivered herkeynote address – titled “Women MakingHistory Today” – to an audience of roughly200 community members.

The ceremony opened with the singingof the national anthem by Susan Pruitt ofJoint Task Force Civil Support. She wasfollowed by the invocation and openingremarks from Lt. Gen. John M. Curran,director of the TRADOC Futures Center.

“This year’s theme, ‘Women ChangeAmerica,’ celebrates the role of Americanwomen in transforming our culture, ourhistory and our politics,” Curran said.

“A knowledge of women’s historyprovides a more expansive vision of whata woman can do,” Curran also said. “Thisperspective can encourage young girlsand women to think larger and bolder andgive boys and men a fuller understandingof the female experience.”

Curran referred to Dunwoody as a“shining example” of the success womencontinue to achieve. He briefly reviewedher history and commended her leader-ship style, which can be summed up byher favorite quote, “If I ever rise above thecrowd, it is because I am standing on the

shoulders of giants.”

Dunwoody told the audience early on inher talk that she “never thought about whatwasn’t possible” because she was alwaysallowed to do her job in peacetime and in

war. “I don’t take that for granted,” shesaid. “I know that didn’t happen byaccident.”

The general then offered an attention-grabbing overview of the accomplishmentsof “incredible women” past and present.While a few of the names she recited wereinstantly recognized, others were moreobscure.

“Mad Anne Bailey – expert shot andskilled horsewoman – served as a scout,spy and messenger (during the IndianWars).

“Sarah Edmonds initially served as a

nurse (during the Civil War), but later

became a spy for the Union. She was amaster of disguise, male or female, blackor white, and she infiltrated enemy lines 11times.”

On the modern battlefield, Dunwoodynoted, nearly 17,000 U.S. Armyservicewomen are serving: “Prouddaughters, wives, mothers – all servingand willing to put their lives on the line.”

She then spoke of those who have“paid the ultimate sacrifice” in Iraq. Hernarrative included Pfc. Rachel K. Bosveld,

a young military policewoman fromGiessen, Germany.

“When she found out she was going toIraq, she said, ‘Dad, I get to go,’ not ‘Dad, have to go.’ She was so proud and excitedto have the opportunity to serve hercountry,” Dunwoody said.

Bosveld narrowly escaped death inSeptember 2004 when her humvee was hiby a rocket-propelled grenade, Dunwoodyexplained. “She escaped with bruises andsore muscles, only to be killed a fewweeks later, on Oct. 26, in another attack(on a Baghdad police station.)

“They weren’t told to serve, but ratherthey asked to serve. They weren’t asked toput their lives on the line, but they chose toput their lives on the line,” Dunwoody said.

Dunwoody mentioned the one docu-ment she carries with her at all times: theSoldier’s Creed. “It unifies all Soldiers. Itmakes us a family of warriors,” she said.

She then tugged her military identifica-tion tags out from under her shirt andexpressed her thanks to the nation forallowing her to wear those tags.

“These are one of my most cherishedpossessions,” Dunwoody said. “They markmy place in the greatest Army the nation

has ever known.”

Spc. Sean P. Watson, a USAMUservice-pistol team member, won thesmall-arms overall individual champion-ship, which was an aggregate of theservice-rifle individual championship andthe service-pistol individual championship.

Spc. Craig S. Nelson, a USAMUgunsmith, took second place, and Sgt.Robert S. Park II, a USAMU service-pistolshooter, came in third.

Staff Sgt. John M. Buol was the winnerin the novice division, followed by StaffSgt. Russell V. Gerhardt in second place;both Soldiers are Reservists in the SmallArms Readiness Group. Sgt. 1st ClassKevin W. Bittenbender of the PennsylvaniaNational Guard took third place.

Match. In the Chief of Staff of the ArmyRifle Match, Lewis took second place, andvan Aalst came in third; in the novicecategory, the winner was by Micholick,followed in second place by Hartley andBittenbender in third.

Van Aalst also took second place – onlyone point behind Richmond – in theSecretary of the Army Rifle Match, in whichBright finished third in the open categoryand was the highest female finisher. Thenovice winner was Pfc. Lee L. Vampola ofCompany B, 3rd Battalion, 75th RangerRegiment. Micholick took second place,

Park and Cpl. Walter E. Craig Jr. won theGeneral Patton Pistol Match, whichincluded a timed two-mile run. The 75thRanger team took second place, and theArmy Reserve team finished third.

The USAMU team won the Sergeant

Major of the Army Pistol Team Match; theArmy Reserve team finished second, andthe Pennsylvania National Guard teamtook third. The USAMU team also won theCombat Assault Pistol Match, in which theNew York National Guard took secondplace and the Fort Campbell team finishedthird.

That’s what Lt. Gen. Anthony R. Jones,deputy commanding general and chief ofstaff of the Army’s Training and DoctrineCommand, told the nearly 200 Soldiersgathered at the 2005 U.S. Army Small

Arms Championships.Jones was the guest speaker at the All-

Army Championships awards ceremonyMarch 20. Active duty, National Guard andReserve Soldiers from across the countrytook part in the All-Army Pistol and RifleChampionships March 12-24. The U.S.Army Marksmanship Unit hosted the All-Army Small Arms Championships inconjunction with the U.S. Army InfantryCenter.

“I know that now you’re more confidentmarksmen and better Soldiers, and I askthat you take this training back to yourunits and share it with your fellow Soldiers;it’s tremendously important,” Jones toldthe competitors. “Go back and tell yourleaders about the good training the ArmyMarksmanship Unit and Fort Benningprovide; I think there’s none better.”

Braving pouring rain and wind chills inthe 30s, Soldiers competed with the M-16rifle or M-4 carbine, M-9 pistol and M-24 orM-14 rifles against 188 counterparts fromthe regular Army, Reserve and NationalGuard. Rifle matches were shot at rangesfrom 200 to 500 yards. Pistol matcheswere fired under combat time standards atseven to 25 yards; one team matchincluded a timed two-mile run withweapons and full combat gear. All firingwas done with helmet and individualcombat gear. Long-range matches werefired at ranges of 600 to 1,000 yards.

“The advanced shooting experiencegained in these challenging matchestranslates into better trained and confidentSoldiers, ready to meet the challenges ofthe Global War on Terrorism,” saidUSAMU’s commander, Lt. Col. David J.Liwanag. “These championships are thepinnacle of in-service Army competitivemarksmanship training.”

Not only did the Soldiers learn fromcompeting in the matches, but all competi-tors in the All-Army Championships alsoattend mandatory rifle, pistol and long-range training classes given by USAMUinstructors and received certificates oftraining.

According to Liwanag, after last year’sAll-Army competition, competitors fromFort Benning’s CONUS ReplacementCenter used the training they received andapplied it to their own unit training, whichresulted in a weapons qualificationincrease from 30 percent to 90 percent.

“The All-Army Competition gives allcompetitors the opportunity to spend aweek on the ranges fine-tuning thefundamental skills necessary for success-ful shooting ,” said USAMU’s Spc. Sean P.Watson, who won the small-arms overallindividual championship and the service-pistol individual championship. “The addedpressure of competition is important, as itkeeps the shooters’ motivation andmindset focused every day. These

matches are unique in that all Soldierscompeting are using their assigned orsimilar weapons. Many are very surprisedto find how successful they can beengaging targets at extended ranges.”

“The All-Army rifle championship was atremendous event and a great experiencefor future leaders of our Army,” said StaffSgt. Jared N. van Aalst of 3rd Battalion,75th Ranger Regiment, who won theservice-rifle individual championship. “Allthe rifle firing was conducted on a known-

distance range and emphasized individualmarksmanship skills and not targetengagement. Most Soldiers lack thetraining and confidence necessary toreliably hit a man-sized target past 200meters, much less 500 yards.

“Soldiers will also take back to theirrespective units the importance of known-distance firing because of the downrangefeedback they received while firing,” vanAalst continued. “I also believe the All-

Army championships better preparesservice members for combat; the only wayto duplicate the marksmanship stress feltduring combat is at the highest levels ofindividual shooting competition.”

Matches were open to all Soldiersworldwide of any military-occupationspecialty. Participants included active-dutySoldiers from Fort Benning; Fort Gillem,Ga.; Fort Bragg, N.C.; Fort Campbell, Ky.;Fort Sill, Okla.; Fort Lewis, Wash.; FortRiley, Kan.; and Fort Drum, N.Y. National

Guardsmen came from New York, Penn-sylvania, Nebraska, Wyoming and Texas,and many Army Reservists also partici-pated.

About 40 percent of the Soldiers whocompeted were combat veterans ofOperation Iraqi Freedom and OperationEnduring Freedom.

FORT SILL, Okla. (TRADOC News

Service, March 14, 2005) – About 150basic combat trainees arrived at their newhome: B Battery, 1st Battalion, 40th FieldArtillery.

After being introduced to their drillsergeants at the 95th Reception Battalion,all were transported to the Central IssueFacility.

At CIF, trainees are issued their basiccombat training gear – items as diverse ascanteens, entrenching tools and headgear.

During issue, Soldiers must hold theirlaundry bags off the ground and in front ofthem. At first, the bags are light and thetask is easy enough. The bag gets heavier.Much heavier.

Some are not surprised by the earlyrigors of “basic.”

“I knew it was going to be challenging,but I knew it was going to get me physi-cally and mentally fit in case I were to goto Iraq,” said Pvt. Keith Mauga.

Basic military movements, pushups andprecision are taught the first day, saidCapt. Viet Lee, B Btry. commander.

Another reason for the activities on the

first day of BCT is “toshock the new traineesinto a military frame ofmind. It’s an immersioninto military culture,” Lee

said.New trainees are

taught the seven ArmyValues and WarriorEthos. Drill sergeantsemphasize teamwork,discipline and respect,said Pvt. Robert Davis,1st Platoon.

Sgt. 1st Class RobertLangford, senior drillsergeant, told thetrainees what would beexpected of them duringthe next nine weeks.

Trainees must under-stand that drill sergeantsare in charge, he said.

FORT BENNING, Ga. (TRADOC NewsService, March 18, 2005) – The goalMarch 14 was to increase fitness, toughensoft hands, begin building the fire that willbecome a warrior spirit and, most impor-tantly, foster teamwork that will pull younginfantrymen through the long days oftraining that lie ahead and the darker daysof war which await many of them on theother side of graduation.

The troops of B Company, 1st Battalion,50th Infantry Regiment, started the daywith a physical-fitness test before rallyingat the Sand Hill obstacle course for amorning of sweat, sandy mud, soremuscles and battered knees and elbows.

“I’ve told my drill sergeants to fire themup,” said 1st Lt. Willie Bowen, executiveofficer. “We’ll get them psyched up, but at

the same time, their buddies will begintalking them up.

“This is where we see the beginning ofteamwork and camaraderie. By sparking alittle rivalry, they start identifying with eachother and pulling together with the com-mon goal to beat the other platoons,”Bowen said.

Broken up into 10-man squads, theentire company navigated the roughly 400-meter course, which included about adozen obstacles. The average time duringthe first iteration was 15 minutes.

“Hey, Cupcake! There’s a cheeseburgerwaiting at the end of this, so you better be

running the whole way, man!” said Pvt.Drew Smith to battle buddy Pvt. AnthonyStrahin.

And then they did it again.The second pass was marked by a

stronger sense of unity within eachplatoon. Mottos were screamed betweenobstacles, teammates stuck together, andSoldiers cheered the weakest linksforward through the muck and across the

physical barriers. There was laughing, battle cries and frustratedcharges all along the winding course.

Although tired, wet, sore and filthy beyond recognition, the Soldiers

seemed to be having a good time.“This is going to get us into shape, and they want to see us startworking together as a team,” said Pfc. Joshua Beck. “It has been fun,and that’s part of the reason I joined as an infantryman. I didn’t want todo some boring job; I wanted some excitement.”

“The team-teaching program allowsinstructors who normally are just teachersto go that extra step and work hand-in-hand with the drill sergeants,” said Capt.James Woods, commander, Headquartersand Headquarters Company, 187thOrdnance Battalion. “There is one teamteacher assigned to each class. They helptrain Soldiers tactically and academicallyabout their military-occupation specialtyand act as a liaison between the AIT unitand the schoolhouse, where they learntheir trade.”

Staff Sgt. Philip Harralson has been ateam teacher at the 187th WVMS for ayear.

“This is a good program because if wedidn’t have team teachers, the Soldierswould just be at the company for the first

and last part of the day, and in the middleof that, they would go to the schoolhouse,”said Harralson. “We as team teachersestablish a buffer between the two places.”

Harralson’s duties require him to workbeyond regular duty hours to ensure hisSoldiers understand all the vital trainingthey receive.

“I’m there with the Soldiers duringphysical training and after duty hours,helping them in any way I can. Sometimesthere are Soldiers who have fallen behindin their studies, and I’m there as aresource for them,” said Harralson. “Wehelp the drill sergeants by keeping order,

and we help instructors by filling in someof that information a Soldier might nothave received because they were on sickcall.”

Though Harralson’s responsibilities areextensive, he finds being a team teachervery rewarding.

“I like being a team teacher becauseinstructing is great, but when you actuallyget to influence Soldiers and help themtrain for war, it’s just so gratifying to see

what a difference you can make,” saidHarralson.

The team-teaching program wasestablished in the 1980s and originated

from another program called the GroupPace Instruction.

“The GPI program gave Soldiers thefreedom to complete their modules at theirown pace, allowing them to advanceindividually. Then another rendition of theprogram was created in the form of theteam teacher,” said Chief Warrant OfficerHarvey Jackson, director of WVMS.

“The change came about becausehaving the team teacher was much moreefficient for us, considering how a lot of thetraining here is hands-on. So not only dowe need the supervision to allow theseSoldiers to use the machinery, but we alsoneeded to take into account the regulatoryone-to-six ratio between instructors andstudents,” said Jackson.

Ever since the change, the newprogram has been a success for WVMS.

“It works well because you’re going tohave students who are on sick call orgoing to clothing exchange, and when theydo come back, they’re going to need helpto catch up on all the important materialthey missed. That’s where the team

teacher facilitates,” said Jackson.“We only have 11 weeks and two days

to give our AIT Soldiers a skill, and we’reno longer working with just a big green

vehicle any more,” he added. “We have somuch more technology now at our finger-tips. So our Soldiers need as much hands-on time as they can get, and the teamteachers help them do that and grasp allthe technical knowledge they need.”

Jackson recognized how well theprogram works for 187th Ordnance Bn.,but he also stressed how the program istailored to the school.

“You’ve got pros and cons because youhave to look at your structure first. Youhave to see if you have enough instructorsto pull off their teaching platforms and

assign them to a class as a team teacher,”said Jackson. “It will work, but you’re goingto have to put the work into it for it toaccommodate you. You have to think, ‘Do want to work harder, or do I want to worksmarter?’ And I think if we want to worksmarter, then the team teacher programwill work for any AIT school and unit.

“You just have to be careful you don’toverextend your manpower,” Jacksonemphasized.

FORT BENNING, Ga. (TRADOC NewsService, March 7, 2005) – Studentsattending the Primary Leadership Devel-opment Course at Fort Benning are seeingnew training. Sgt. 1st Class DanielLongstreet, Headquarters and Headquar-ters Detachment, NCO Academy, said thecurrent PLDC class is the first to partici-pate in a pilot program designed to helpfamiliarize NCOs with issues that affectSoldiers in today’s Army.

“We focus on things besides regulartraining,” Longstreet said. “(The pilotprogram) added various reporting proce-dures, requests for medical evacuationsand incorporated improvised explosivedevices – something we were doingalready.”

A course on sexual assault was addedto go along with the sexual-harassmentclasses already being taught. Landnavigation and site training were alsoconsolidated.

“It’s good because all (NCOs), not justthose in combat arms, will know what todo,” said Sgt. Matthew Tennill, 3rd Battal-ion, 75th Ranger Regiment. “When theygo on a convoy, they will know what to dowith an IED on the side of the road. They

can be the leader – step up and takecontrol of the situation.”

Besides basic training, this was the firsttime in the field for Sgt. Teria Wright fromFort Jackson, S.C.

“If somebody were to take me (withoutPLDC) and put four Soldiers under me, I

wouldn’t know what to do,” Wright said.“Everything they have added to this courseis important, and noncombative Soldierslearn things we wouldn’t have known

before.”Neither Tennill nor Wright felt the

program’s seven-day work week was anissue. They felt taking out the breakshelped them retain information and stay in“learning mode” longer.

“Everything goes by quicker because

the weeks run together,” said Sgt. BryntonHester of Fort Gordon, Ga. “We don’t havemuch time off, so the continual traininginstills discipline to be a Soldier 24/seven,

not just as a nine-to-five job.”Hester said he thinks the training has

changed because it is “a different war withdifferent tactics, and we need to changeour training to adapt to the world today.”

The students in this PLDC cycle willgraduate March 10.

FORT LEE, Va. (TRADOC NewsService, March 11, 2005) – AmericanSoldiers have a new weapon, and it comesfrom within their very hearts and souls.Graduates of the recently implementedModern Army Combatives Course at FortLee know exactly what it is and howpowerful it can be.

“It” is a new regiment of combatsubmission maneuvers and grapplingtechniques, part of an Army-wide initiative,designed to give American Soldiers the

upper hand in one-on-one engagements,allowing themselves to close with andsubdue any enemy in close-quarterscombat.

“The rules of engagement do notalways allow a Soldier to employ his or herweapon without proper cause; andstatistics show that nine out of 10 fightsend up on the ground within five to sevenseconds – the first 50 seconds of a fightusually determines the winner,” said StaffSgt. Antonio Lynn of 23rd QuartermasterBrigade. He is the only modern Armycombatives certified instructor at Fort Lee.“We teach Soldiers to win the fight.”

The week-long “train-the-trainer” courseinstructs Soldiers on techniques such ashow to maintain dominant body positions,break dominant body positions, bodymanipulation, proper stand-up techniques,employ submissions and escape fromcertain submissions.

The program began in 1995 and, afterreceiving positive feedback, has beenincorporated into the new Field Manual 3-25.150. It’s now being introduced to theArmy through train-the-trainer courses likethe one at Fort Lee, Lynn said.

When Soldiers arrive at the building where the Warriors Ethos-mandated training is held, they see a scene that looks like a movie: an Army fight club,where rank and authority are left at the door and the lesson of the day is proper grappling techniques.

Strewn across the gym are empty bottles of Gatorade and canteens ... the liquid from them dripping off the faces of the freshly “roughed up” warriors.

There are no profile Soldiers in this course and no waivers, either. Those who get a profile can consider it a pink slip because they’re as good as gone.

In modern Army combatives, there are only full-fledged trainees. Handicaps don’t exist.

The instructor does not hide the fact that trainees can and have been hurt during the training. He had seen it all first- hand, since he went through the tougher 

instructor-certification course himself.

“Soldiers are also taught [in thecombatives course] that the winner of anurban battlefield close-quarters confronta-tion is the one whose battle buddies comethrough the door first – with a weapon,”

Lynn said. “The course provides theconfidence needed to engage the enemy.”

“We are tasked to take down anopponent during the course who is tryingto punch us in the face,” said Staff Sgt.Jenny Canalas, Headquarters andHeadquarters Company, 262nd Quarter-master Battalion. She was the smallestSoldier in her class. “It gives me confi-dence that my size is not a factor if Iimplement my moves correctly.”

“By-the-numbers is the most importantpart of the training, in my opinion,” saidStaff Sgt. Cedric Spivey.

“I really enjoy this training because it

shows you what you can do without yourweapon,” said Staff Sgt. Benita Johnson,Headquarters and Headquarters Com-pany, 266th Quartermaster Battalion.“Even cooks need to be able to defendthemselves.”

FORT GORDON, Ga. (TRADOC NewsService, March 31, 2005) – The 15thSignal Brigade conducted scenario lane-training exercises in Training Areas 9 and10 March 23-25 with the 369th, 447th and551st Signal Battalions participating.

In this field-training exercise, each bat-talion set up a station in which differentwarrior tasks and Soldiers’ reactions tospecific scenarios was tested.

The round-robin training had eachbattalion training their own Soldiers at theirstation and then rotating those Soldiersthrough the other battalions’ stations.

At Training Area 9, 369th’s station

involved training Soldiers on dismountedpatrol, breaching warrior obstacles,reacting to ambush, sending radio reports,quick reactionary force, roving guards,military vehicle checkpoints and use of theGlobal Positioning System.

The Soldiers stayed in the training areathe full length of the training exercise – three days, two nights – and also trainedon night land navigation.

At Training Area 10, 447th’s stationtested Soldiers on conducting an un-mounted patrol and reacting to variousscenarios during the patrol.

Also at Training Area 10, 551st’s stationtaught how to clear buildings, execute mili-tary operations in urban terrain proceduresand deal with encountering the enemywhile conducting searches. They alsotrained on signal and hand communica-tions in a field environment.

About 115 initial-entry training Soldiersparticipated in the training event.

Sgt. 1st Class Raymond Thompson ofHeadquarters and Headquarters Com-pany, 447th Signal Battalion, and one ofthe cadre members in charge of running atraining lane, said the training conductedis based on real-world events such asones Soldiers find themselves in in Iraq.

“We’re getting the young Soldiersfamiliar with what they’re going to be doingonce they get deployed,” said Thompson.

At 447th’s station, a group of 12 Sol-diers ran through the lane at a time andaccomplished several tasks within an hour.

The Soldiers had to react to a chemicalor biological hazard, decontaminate them-selves and their equipment, react to an un-exploded ordnance, react to contact and

ambush, move under direct fire, evaluate acasualty and perform first aid, and react toman-to-man contact.

Company E, 369th Signal Battalion, 1stSgt. Rafael Gonzalez said the training isvital to Soldiers’ future success.

“We have made warrior task and drillstraining priority one,” said Gonzalez, “andit is paying off because the Soldiers areexecuting in an outstanding manner duringthis brigade FTX.”

Capt. James Dailey, Co. C, 369th Sig.Bn., commander, said the FTX was good,

realistic training for young Soldiers whowill, on average, see the battlefield 27days after graduating IET.

“These lane trainings may provide themwith a snapshot of what they may see inthe future,” said Dailey.

He added that having outstanding drillsergeants such as Staff Sgt. Hugh Sullivan

 – who recently graduated the CombatLeaders Course at Fort Benning, Ga. – and Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Madorma

training IET Soldiers helps provide realismto the training.

“These lessons-learned out here willprovide serious impact when they get onthe battlefield,” said Dailey. “We areteaching them now how to react later.”

Staff Sgt. Stephen Aldrich, a drillsergeant assigned to Co. E, 369th Sig.Bn., assisted in the hand-to-handcombatives training.

“Nowadays, especially with what’sgoing on in Iraq, you may find yourselfclearing a building, taking a prisoner and

in a hand-to-hand combatives situation,”he said. “This training is going to beextremely vital to these Soldiers’ future.”

Pfc. Michael Gregory, an IET Soldierassigned to Co. C, 369th Sig. Bn., whowent through the lane training, said thiswas good refresher training.

“I thought it was great,” he said. “Thereare things that can be done better, butoverall I’m glad we’re doing this becausewe’re getting ready to head out to variousunits and will be deployed soon.”

FORT JACKSON, S.C. (TRADOCNews Service, March 24, 2005) – The waythe Army trains Soldiers for the contempo-rary operating environment is evolving

almost daily.In the last 40 years, urban dwellershave more than tripled in number. Factor-ing in this rapid rate of the world’s urban-ization, the potential for U.S. military forcesundertaking some type of operations inurban areas is a more than a possibility – it is a reality, making urban-operationstraining all the more imperative.

Lt. Col. Allen Reece, commander of2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, andLt. Col. Fred Johnson, commander of 2ndBattalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, bothsaw the need for a site that would helpprepare their basic combat training

Soldiers for fighting in the 21st century.Reece said that he and Johnson

developed the idea of where they wantedto build it and how it would be laid out,including use of the Boy Scout area.

“We always tied it to existing structuresthat were already there so we would nothave to build all of them from scratch,” hesaid.

“(Johnson) started pushing the initiativeto gain access to the Boy Scout area. As

we got approval to take more and more ofthe land and approval to have thesebuildings built, (Johnson) and I decided tomake that whole tract into a training areahe could use, and I could use, and 2ndBattalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, coulduse,” said Reece.

Static vehicles positioned betweenbuildings allow Soldiers to practice findingcover. They learn cover is not onlyprovided by trees and rocks but can be aparked truck or the side of a building.

Conversely, they “eat the dirt” whilethey high- and low-crawl – a lifesaving skillfor Soldiers in suburban areas andshantytowns where fewer buildings andvehicles equal less and more isolatedobjects that can be used as protectionfrom attackers.

“You can do everything (in the newtraining area). Everything from first aid, to

engage enemy forces in an urban area, toentering and clearing a room, to check-point operations and (enemy prisoner ofwar) holding-facility procedures, to callingin a (medical evacuation), to calling in fire

 – name it, you can do it all,” said Reece.

“Most installations have a (militaryoperations in urban terrain) site, a city-typesite. I think what we have here is definitelymaking us more prepared,” Reece added.“We don’t just have a MOUT site; we have

an area that allows us to create theseenvironmental situations Soldiers will haveto deal with. You can drive your trucksthrough them, you can drive convoysthrough them. You can get ambushed andfight on the truck, off the truck. Soldiershigh, Soldiers low. It is situation-aware-

ness types of scenarios.”“We have adjusted the training to the

conditions we are going to fight in. Tosurvive as an Army, you have to do that.We are a learning organization,” saidJohnson.

One training area of the site that zeroesin on a critical issue Soldiers are facing,especially in Iraq, is the improvisedexplosive device lane.

The urgency of the IED training be-comes apparent with the stark statistics ofOperation Iraqi Freedom. As of March ofthis year, a total of 328 Soldiers have lost

their lives in Iraq to IEDs.Along the lane, three IEDs are hidden.

The first two are detonated by a trip wireand release a water spray, Johnson said.The last one is command-detonated soSoldiers get the experience of one goingoff in case they were able to locate andavoid the first two.

“It is good for a focused training event. want Soldiers to have situational aware-ness. And, the spray of water shows the

Soldier his lack of situational awarenesscan result in something detrimental,” saidJohnson.

Johnson added that the checkpointdrills also help train awareness in Soldiers.“There is no doubt in my mind they aregoing to have to guard something wher-ever they go,” he said. “They may not beentering and clearing a room, but they willhave to manage a guardpost. I can makesure they can do that piece of it right.”

Right now, only a few of the buildings inthe new training area have furniture inthem.

“The endstate is to have tables andchairs so when (Soldiers) clear the room,they have to deal with that obstacle,” saidJohnson.

Other aspects the Soldiers train for ismedia contact and the presence of non-combatants on the battlefield.

While the site is fairly comprehensive,there are six more buildings that need tobe constructed to make it a three-battaliontraining area, said Reece.

Down the road, possibilities includepaintball training and use of the provenMultiple Integrated Laser EngagementSystem. The commanders would also liketo have some walls built to create acourtyard effect, replicating what Iraqicities have, said Reece.

There are no plans for installing pop-upsilhouette targets.

“If I put people in proper (opposingforces) uniforms, I feel (Soldiers) aregetting better trained for shooting atanother human being,” said Johnson.

Reece said plans are underway to buildthree more training sites. Also, theinstallation MOUT site at Training Area 19

Bravo will continue to grow and beimproved, he said.

Don Richardson, an engineeringtechnician with the Directorate of Engi-neering and Logistics, said no decisionshave been made on where the new siteswill be located, nor is there a set timewhen construction will begin.

Reece, who is helping head up devel-opment of the sites, said they hope tokeep the costs at approximately $70,000per site.

When all the sites are finished, Reecesaid two will be controlled by 1st BasicCombat Training Brigade and two by 4thTraining Brigade.

FORT SILL, Okla. (TRADOC NewsService, March 14, 2005) – Last week you graduated from advanced individual training.

This week you are in Iraq, “clearing” buildings with a unit you just joined mid- deployment.

You’re ready.

AIT Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 80thField Artillery, practiced urban warriortasks and drills at Fort Sill’s new LibertyCity Feb. 24.

Fort Sill has a new training site builtafter a typical Iraqi urban setting. LibertyCity has two-story buildings with balco-

nies, narrow streets and walls with a singlegate leading into a courtyard. Buildings,walls and gates have Arabic writing anddecoration painted on them.

The rooms’ designs are identical to atypical small Iraqi room, with office desksand furniture, said Lt. Col. ShawnVishneski, commander, 2nd Bn., 80th FA.

“But it is about 60 percent complete,”said Vishneski. Burned-out vehicles,electronics and targets will be added to the

site to enhance realism, he said.The project a was a collective effortthroughout Training and Doctrine Com-mand to train new Soldiers based on theArmy’s recent experiences and require-ments in Iraq. The drill sergeants at FortSill are the same who were involved in the

training of Iraqi Soldiers only months ago.They provided the information andexperience needed to set up urbanoperations training, said Vishneski.

He explained that the warrior tasks anddrills incorporate a new training method inwhich the drill sergeants now operate assquad leaders, thereby teaching theirSoldiers what it takes to be a goodnoncommissioned officer. Soldiers willbuild confidence in their leaders and will

not be afraid to ask questions, saidVishneski.“Our intent is to train on basic infantry

skills. We’re not going to make a proficientinfantryman, but when somebody tellsthem to do a four-man stack, they willunderstand how to do the basics,” saidVishneski.

Liberty City is the Middle East versionof the more Baltic-themed nearby Free-dom Town – but with a different trainingmindset, he said.

After Liberty City, Soldiers will havesome experience before going to theirregular units, said the C Battery com-

mander, Capt. Joe Gallaher. Before goingthrough the site, Soldiers practiced thebuilding-clearing processes in a simulatedroom called the “glass house,” he said.

The instructors lead and evaluate howSoldiers perform the tasks, and on-the-spot corrections can be made while in alearning environment, said Gallaher.

When Soldiers finish with the “glasshouse,” they move on to more complexclearing situations and then secure Liberty

City. While trainees go from room to roomand floor to floor, instructors observe theevents, give corrections and directions.

Soldiers learn to operate with distrac-tion such as simulated grenades, enemiesand sounds of the battlefield, said Pfc.Keith Johnson, C Btry. “Any practice isgood … but (Liberty City) will definitelyhelp you (perform urban operations),” saidJohnson.

Various potential targets are placed

throughout the city. These full-scale photosare as diverse as a man holding aweapon, a child and a uniformed U.S.Soldier. The friendly targets have aMultiple Integrated Laser EngagementSystem gear attached, so it if a Soldiershoots friendly targets, the MILES-gearalarm will sound.

“Because you’re going to havefriendlies in the building – you’ll have littlekids and women when you do roomclearing,” said Gallaher.

Like at Freedom Town, the new LibertyCity also boasts a tough opposing force – leaders, volunteers and Airborne hold-overSoldiers who act as realistic OPFOR, saidVishneski.

That’s 2nd Lt. Rescorla featured on thecover of We Were Soldiers Once … And Young conducting a final sweep onVietnam’s bloody Ia Drang battlefield in1965. It was a clean sweep – Rescorlabrought all his men out, all but one alive.

And that’s retired Col. Rescorlafeatured in what has become a familiarimage of 9-11, a barrel-chested man with abullhorn overseeing the evacuation of theSouth Tower of the World Trade Center. Asthe vice president of corporate security forMorgan Stanley, Rescorla was responsiblefor the safety of more than 2,700 employ-ees. All but six made it out alive. Rescorladied making a final sweep.

“He saved 2,700 lives, only to give hisown,” wrote James Stewart in Heart of a Soldier , a tribute to the man they called“Hard Core” in Vietnam because he sangsoothing Cornish folk songs while thebattle raged all around him.

When Rescorla’s widow, Susan, visitedFort Benning last week to unveil hisportrait at the National Infantry Museum,she described a big, strong man with a

big, soft heart. Doctors had diagnosedprostate cancer and gave him six monthsto live back in 1998, months before shemet him while out walking her dog.

They fell in love soon after, and whenRescorla’s cancer went into remission, hecredited Susan. He sang to her a Cornishballad, “White Rose,” and sent her dozensof white roses every week. And heproposed. The couple had been marriedtwo years when he was killed.

Now Susan has made it her mission toerect a bronze statue of Rescorla at FortBenning, where he attended basic trainingand Officer Candidate School. It would be

the first of its kind, a statue depicting andhonoring an individual. That would befitting, his wife said, because Rescorlawas one of a kind, “a new hero for a newmillennium.”

But Rescorla’s story began more than60 years before the new millennium, inCornwall, England, home of the legendaryKing Arthur, where these days they sing“The Ballad of Ricky Rescorla.” He lefthome at 18 and served with the Queen’s

army in Cyprus before joining the ColonialPolice in Rhodesia.There he met Dan Hill, a“freelance soldier” whowould become a lifelongfriend.

“What now?” Hillasked Rescorla as theyprepared to leaveRhodesia.

“I want to fightcommunism,” Rescorlasaid.

“Then come toAmerica with me,” hisfriend replied. “We’ll fightit together.”

That’s how Rescorlacame to be a platoonleader with B Companyof the 7th Cavalry’s 2ndBattalion. B Co. came tothe aid of 1st Battalion,which was being chewedup by 2,000 NorthVietnamese forces in oneof U.S. history’s bloodiestbattles. And that’s howwar correspondent PeterArnett captured the photoof Rescorla conducting afinal sweep, with his M-

16, bayonet fixed,leading the way.

from World Trade Center officials thateverything was all right and everyoneshould remain in their offices.

Morgan Stanley employees got an 18-minute head-start to safety. Along the way,someone snapped a picture of Rescorlawith a bullhorn. He sang Cornish tunes,some later told Susan, and urged them to“be proud, it’s a great day to be anAmerican.”

When the last of the Morgan Stanleyemployees passed his way, Rescorlaheaded back up the tower for a finalsweep. It cost him his life, Susan said, buthe gave it freely.

“He couldn’t have lived with himself ifhe made it out safe and lost someonethere,” she said. “He was a Soldier on thatday. He was doing what he did in Vietnam.I wouldn’t have expected anything less.”

Rescorla left activeduty in 1967 but re-mained with the Re-serves and retired as colonel in 1990. Bythen he’d earned a law degree, owned aconstruction company, served as militaryinstructor, professor and occasional writer.

But it was in his position as securitychief for Morgan Stanley that Rescorlashined, using the skills and logic he’dhoned on the battlefield. The employeeswere less than impressed when heinstituted a regular evacuation drill for thecompany’s 30-plus floors.

“Everybody used to laugh. No one tookit seriously,” one employee told JanePauley in a “Dateline” report last year. “Hedrilled it into our heads.”

That was before the truck-bomb attackin 1993. After that, Morgan Stanleyemployees trusted Rescorla’s instinct, andit served them well. When the first planehit the North Tower in 2001, he ordered animmediate evacuation, despite assurance

a fact that Susan doesn’t dwell on.“I don’t need a body. I don’t need a

memorial at Ground Zero,” she said.“What I’d like is for people to never forget.Never forget what happened on 9-11.

“I’m proud of my husband, and I’mproud of America, and I’m proud of ourSoldiers,” she said. “I want them to knowthis is not another Vietnam. They have oursupport.”

Susan would also like to see herhusband awarded the Presidential Medalof Freedom, and she’s collected 30,000signatures petitioning Congress to do justthat.

“When he was alive, he didn’t want tobe honored for anything,” she said. “If hewere here today, he’d be asking what allthe fuss is about.

“I’m doing this for me. It’s how I deal

with it. People say, ‘You know, after awhile, you should get over it.’ I’ll never getover it. I’ve decided to live with my grief. Ithink about him everyday.”

FORT RUCKER, Ala. (TRADOC NewsService, March 17, 2005) -- In a ceremonyat the U.S. Army Aviation Museum March9, the U.S. Army Aviation Center awardedtwo instructor pilots for their outstandingcommitment to making professionalaviators out of flight students.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Nathan J.Stewart, an OH-58 Kiowa instructor pilotat Shell Army Heliport assigned toCompany A, 1st Battalion, 212th AviationRegiment, was named Officer InstructorPilot of the Quarter, and Mark E. Beck, anOH-58D Kiowa Warrior instructor pilot atHanchey Army Heliport, was namedCivilian Instructor Pilot of the Quarter forthe first quarter of Fiscal Year 2005.

Present for the ceremony were Brig.Gen. William Jacobs, deputy commandinggeneral, USAAVNC and Fort Rucker; Col.Steven Semmens, commander of the110th Aviation Brigade and president ofthe Aviation Center Chapter of the ArmyAviation Association of America; andChester Sowell, mayor of Dothan, Ala.,and president of the Wiregrass Chapter ofthe Association of the United States Army.

Semmens gave the remarks at thebeginning of the ceremony, discussing theorigins of the Instructor of the Quarterprogram and the specifics of the evalua-tion process. He praised the impressive

efforts of the more than 800 instructorpilots currently teaching at Fort Rucker.

“They’re out there slugging it out in thecold and the heat, day after day, doinghard work in difficult circumstances, andthey all take their tasks seriously,” Sem-mens said. “But what separates these twoinstructors is not only that passion for the

 job, but an understanding of how important

it is not just to have our graduates -- ouryoung WO1s and lieutenants -- leave herewith technical skills, but to leave here aswell-rounded professionals in every senseof the word.”

After Semmens presented each winnerwith a plaque and certificate of achieve-ment from USAAVNC and a plaque fromAAAA, Sowell presented them withplaques from AUSA.

Stewart, originally from Mandan, N.D.,entered the Army in January 1996. Heserved as an AH-64 Apache crew chiefwith Co. B, 1st Bn., 227th Aviation Regt.,Fort Hood, Texas, before entering WarrantOfficer Career School at Fort Rucker inSeptember 1997. He then began flighttraining at Rucker, finishing in December1999. In January 2000, Stewart became aline pilot with 1st Squadron, 17th CavalryRegt., Fort Bragg, N.C.

Since December of 2001, Stewart hasbeen an instructor pilot at Fort Rucker,teaching the OH-58A/C basic combat skillsand contact courses.

Above all, Stewart said he thinks hebrings a real-world feel to his instruction.He assists students with the mission theywill have “when they get out in the field,whether they’re going to another Trainingand Doctrine Command unit, to a conti-nental U.S. station or over in the GlobalWar on Terrorism,” Stewart said.

Beck, a native of Enterprise, Ala.,

 joined the Army in 1976. He finished flightschool in 1982 and became an instructorpilot in 1985. In May 1996, Beck retiredfrom the Army and entered into civilianservice.

Since that time, he has been at FortRucker teaching a wide range of subjectspertaining to OH-58D Kiowa Warriorinstruction, including contact or emergencyprocedures, manual throttle, night-visiongoggles and live-fire gunnery.

“I think I make it fun,” Beck said, ex-plaining what he contributes to flight in-struction. “It’s challenging enough to fly ahelicopter with all the different systems init -- it gets pretty technical -- so you’ve gotto keep it fun.”

Each quarter, academic instructors andinstructor pilots at Fort Rucker areselected by their supervisors to compete inthe Instructor of the Quarter program. Thenominees are evaluated on the quality oftheir instruction as they act as briefingofficers for the flight line and then teach aclass on a subject relating to flight training

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo.(TRADOC News Service, March 24, 2005)-- Seeing today’s training in action will helpdevelop tomorrow’s force and the technol-ogy it will need to succeed.

This is the message Lt. Gen. John M.Curran, director of the Futures Center,U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Com-mand, brought when he visited FortLeonard Wood March 8-10.

During his stay, Curran receivedbriefings on military police, engineeroperations and a chemical overview. He

also saw a special tactics-training demon-stration at Stem Village.

In October, TRADOC will celebrate thetwo-year anniversary of the Army’s FuturesCenter at Fort Monroe, Va.

“The Futures Center is to design,develop and integrate the future force forour Army,” Curran said.

He said this includes working the fullspectrum of doctrine, organization,training, materiel, leader development,personnel and facilities.

The Futures Center’s work includesorganization construction done in TaskForce Modularity; managing the Future

Combat System with the units of action;and associated higher headquarters for

the Army’s future force. There are studiesand analysis, experimentation and thearchitecture work required to build thefuture force while simultaneously support-ing activities needed to develop andsustain current forces, Curran said.

During the past year, the FuturesCenter has achieved a number of mile-stones.

A significant one reached early on forthe center was bringing together variousorganizations and molding them into acohesive team, he said.

A second milestone is developing the

Joint Capabilities Integration and Develop-ment System, which helps identify andclose capability gaps for current and futureforces across the DOTMLPF domain.

Curran said he sees the future workingin three dimensions: moving the currentforce toward the future force; lookingforward into the future as technologiesmature and bring those into the currentforce; and focusing on what the currentforce needs today to meet our currentchallenges.

The continued efforts needed todevelop, design and integrate the futureforce includes determining what gaps

there are in current capabilities and

working to get those capabilities to theSoldiers in the field today, Curran said.

“I think for the force today, the FuturesCenter is working on this daily to makesure Soldiers have what they need outthere. We can continue to make ourSoldiers successful,” he said.

While here, the focus was the GlobalWar on Terrorism and the many aspects oftraining, equipment and how technology isadvancing. One way is through geospatialservices.

Col. David Kingston, TRADOC ProgramIntegration Office for Terrain Data director,

said he wanted support and funding forgeospatial services.

Kingston said they need the support forcontinued prototyping and spiraling ofenterprise geospatial solutions into thecurrent force. This technology gives thecapability to better find and get aerialimages of improvised explosive devices,he said.

Maj. Gen. Randal Castro, ManueverSupport Center and Fort Leonard Woodcommanding general, said the greatestdetector of an IED is the person on theground. Supporting geospatial technologygives greater capability to aid Soldiers in

finding and combating IEDs.

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo.(TRADOC News Service, March 31, 2005)-- Command Sgt. Maj. William McDaniel,command sergeant major of the U.S. Army

Maneuver Support Center and FortLeonard Wood, sent out an e-mail to theinstallation’s senior-enlisted leadershipafter learning of the president’s approval ofthe first Medal of Honor for actions inOperation Iraqi Freedom to Sgt. 1st ClassPaul Smith.

“I thought it was important for ourleaders to read the citation and share

(Smith’s) story with their subordinates,”McDaniel said.

Smith’s story is not only importantbecause he trained at Fort Leonard Wood(Smith attended basic and advancedindividual training here in 1989), it’simportant because he was the first personto receive the award since 1993.

“We’re in the business of training newSoldiers, young warriors, and providingprofessional development, whether it’s theofficer basic course, NoncommissionedOfficer Education System courses or thecaptain’s career course.

“It’s important for our leaders to use this

story to stress the importance of thetraining they receive here,” he said.

This war isn’t being fought by generalsand colonels but by a sergeant first classand his platoon.

“(Smith) faced a situation and made asplit-second decision,” McDaniel said. “Heis certainly not the only hero from Opera-tion Iraqi Freedom, just the first Medal ofHonor recipient.”

His story is just one example of thethousands of NCOs and Soldiers whohave demonstrated outstanding heroismand patriotism in the face of danger.

Smith was killed in action April 4, 2003.

The TNS homepage is now serving as a “one-stop shop” for information for and about the peopleand work of TRADOC, while TRADOC Perspec- tive  is regearing to provide feature articles aboutTRADOC activities not based at Fort Monroe, Va.

Already complete is Stage 1 of TNS’s changes:a reorganization of TRADOC news and featuresinto major areas of interest. The TNS homepage(http://www.tradoc.army.mil/pao/TNSarchives/ TNSarchives.htm) now is divided not only into TNSreleases by month, but it also has links toTRADOC Public Affairs media releases, Webspecials, TRADOC Perspective , fact sheets / backgrounders, the TRADOC poster series andArmy Values.
