Resources:More factories, more fighting power, greater food production, and a more extensive

railroad system. Lincoln was proved to be a decisive leader, skillful at balancing

political factions. Enormous advantages against the South.

 Preparation:Lincoln asked men

to join for only three

months, people sat

around and had a picnic

on the sidelines of the

battle. No one expected

the war to last as much

as it did.

Men were trained

for as little as three weeks,

before they were thrown out

into the battlefield. Thetraining revolved around

getting the men to be

comfortable with the

weapon and learn how to

use it.

 A Musket which was the

term used for a Rifle.

Goal: Capture Virginia’s Capitol.

BLOCKADE:

The Union Navy would blockade

Southern ports, so they could

neither export cotton nor import

much-needed manufactured

goods.

RIVER ATTACK:

The Union Riverboats and

armies would move down the

Mississippi River and split the

Confederacy in two.

DESTINATION:

The Union armies would wouldcapture the Confederate capital

at Richmond, Virginia.

“In your hands, my

dissatisfied fellow-

countrymen, and not

in mine, is the

momentous issue of

civil war. The

government will not

assail you. You can

have no conflict

without being

 yourselves the

aggressors. You have

no oath registered in

heaven to destroy the

government, while I

shall have the most

solemn one to

"preserve, protect,

and defend it."

Fort Henry, along the Tennessee River,

and Fort Donelson on the CumberlandRiver, were two forts built to protect

Tennessee and the deep South from

invasion. On February 6, 1862 Grant

and Officer Foote captured Fort Henry.

They were in a joint army/navy

operation, Grant had 17,000 menassembled, and were transported by 13

transports under Andrew Foote, along

with nine gun boats. Grant’s men landed

approximately three miles South of the

fort. Within an hour of battle the fort

was forced to give up.

The next day, Grant marched 15,000

men 12 miles to Fort Donelson. Grant

struggled the first day and suffered a

heavy loss. He came back the next day

and made the Confederates surrender.

USS Monitor was a 987 ton armored

gunboat, built in New York by JohnEricsson. She was the first of what

became a large number of Monitors in

the United States. First destination after

being commissioned was Hampton

Roads, Virginia. As soon as it arrived, it

was sent to battle against the

Confederates Ironclad. The first battlewas a draw, however, the USS Monitor

prevented the CSS Virginia from gaining

control over Hampton Roads and

preserved the federal blockade of the

Norfolk area.

The Monitor remained to be the

dominant power in the battle betweenthe two, and held control over

Hampton Road, Virginia, giving the

North the upper hand and forcing the

South not to come any closer.

Central Virginia-- Chaos strikes:

The battle of Cold Harbor was almost

like a slaughter house, General Grant

regret the decision of ever fighting the

war with General Lee. It was a tragic

and horrific war. 5,000 - 7,000 men

were killed during the early morning

attacks. There were 14 assaults from

the East against the Confederate mainline. The Federal loses 7,000 men in so

brief action. Everything was out of

control and the number of deaths kept

multiplying. General Grant and General

Lee took days to agree upon a ceasefire

to tend to the wounded and burry the

dead. For days wounded men would beunattended and most died. General Lee

won his battle against the Union forces

killing 50,000 Union men and losing

32,000 men of his own.

Blacks:The United States Civil War began as

an effort to save the Union, and ended

in a fight to abolish Slavery. This

battle was arguably won by slaves,

 because slaves contributed

significantly to their freedom and

played a key role in the North’s

 victory.

SLAVE MASTERS REACTIONS:

SLAVE MASTERS IN THE SOUTHGREW FEARFUL OF LOSING SLAVES

TO THE UNION ARMIES, THEY

IMPLEMENTED HARSHER

RESTRICTIONS UPON THEIR

SLAVES, OFTEN MOVING THE

ENTIRE PLANTATION FURTHER TO

 AVOID NORTHERN CONTACT. SLAVE

MASTERS DIDN’T REALIZE THAT

THESE CHANGES CAUSED SLAVES

TO FLEE, AND THOSE THAT DID

STAY DEMANDED MORE FREEDOM

FROM THEIR MASTERS. THIS CAUSETHE SLAVES TO GAIN SOME POWER,

FORCING MASTERS TO MAKE

OFFERING IN EXCHANGE FOR

LABOR.

Blacks were aided by the decisions

made by the President. The

emancipation Proclamation led to

the eventual freedom of all slaves.

The document made all slaves free

in the areas of the Confederacy that

were in rebellion. Slavery was not

abolished in some border states.

However, since the Proclamation

only affected the states in rebellion,

it didn’t actually free any slaves. It

did, however, strengthen the

Northern war effort. By the end of

the Civil War, 500,000 slaves had

escaped to the North, many joined

the Union Army, which increased

it’s man power.

Result?

THEIR FAMILIES OR OTHER SLAVES.

the effect it had on Slaves and Black people.

South. Women working as baby sitters for the

Under the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, the

Landscape

Because of the Civil

War, not only landscape was burned

or destroyed, towns were destroyedand were left in a way that no human

can live in.

Treatment of Opposing Army

The armies fought against each other

with aims to claim the other, enemies

were usually killed on the battlefield

and none were taken as prisoners of

war.

North’s Gain

The North had gained a

number of soldiers, mainly

blacks and slaves, who have escaped

for their masters in the South to join

the Union army in the cause of freeing

all slaves.

Lasting Impressions

The Southerners didn’t go down

without a fight. They certainly gave

the North a battle to remember.

Northerners were not ready for some

of the attacks made on them.

Conclusion

The Northern Union prevailed and

defeated the Southern Confederates.

Easy battle?

Purpose of Reconstruction:

The most controversial era in

 American History. The most important

issue at hand was the rights to vote for

African Americans. The purpose of the

reconstruction was to give African

Americans the right to vote, and to free

all slaves in the South.

Benefits of Reconstruction:

In some states, Tennessee in

particular, elections were very

controversial after the war. in 1867 and

1869 the Tennessee government

banned most ex-Confederates from

voting. This made many whites angry.

in 1870, African- Americans started

being elected to public office for the

first time in Tennessee. The first to be

elected was, Sampson Keeble, a former

slave and barber in Nashville who was

elected to the s tate house of

representatives. By mid-1880s there

were four black men in the state house.

Reconstruction Solution:

Besides the Amendments that

were added to the Constitution, a

simple gathering between both party

leaders to negotiate a settlement or

treaty that would help both parties, andmake it a win-win situation. If only one

party got what they wanted, the other

party would rebel and vise versa.
