It is a challenging task.

2,000 miles of border with Mexico

4,000 miles of border with Canada

326 “ports of entry”—official entry or crossing points

142 Border Patrol stations with 33 permanent checkpoints

CBP’s strategy is layered and comprehensive.

Last year, at ports of entry, officers: Processed 422.9 million incoming

travelers, 25.9 million containers, and over 30 million entries of goods

Apprehended 5,702 people for drug-related charges and 8,084 on warrants

Turned away 22,922 criminal and 209,679 inadmissible aliens

Seized 645,596 pounds of illegal drugs, over $236 million in merchandise (an increase of $150 million over FY ’05), $155 million in counterfeit goods, and 25,913 fraudulent documents

Intercepted 2.8 million prohibited agricultural items

Ensure border security against terrorists and other criminals, while facilitating legitimate trade and travel.

We secure more than 300 ports of entry... Inspecting cargo: Layered, defense-in-depth strategy includes CSI, C-TPAT, 24-Hour Rule, Advance Notification, ATS, ATDI, and sophisticated detection and risk management systems

Welcoming legitimate travelers, legal immigrants, and temporary residents: US-VISIT, WHTI, SEVIS, NEXUS, SENTRI, IAFIS, machine-readable passport, preclearance

Examining agricultural imports: Protecting America’s agriculture, the environment, and the food supply from pests, diseases, and agroterrorism

…and patrol the borders in between. Last year, CBP’s Border Patrol agents:

Arrested 1.1 million illegal aliens, including 433 from special interest countries

Seized 1.3 million pounds of illegal drugs worth $1.5 billion

Rescued 2,928 migrants in danger

…and between September 1, 2005 and December 8, 2006, arrested 152,227 individuals with criminal records

New technologies provide critical help...

National Targeting Center

Non-intrusive inspection systems: X-ray and gamma imaging, rail gamma imaging, radiation portal monitors, radiation detection pagers

Sensors, video surveillance cameras, infrared devices and radiation detection devices to detect illegal border activity
