On March 5, 2012, the Agency issued the Interim Record of Decision for the Aberdeen Contaminated Groundwater Superfund Site. The cleanup activities to occur under the Interim Record of Decision are the installation of a groundwater extraction, treatment and discharge system. The components of these systems include the necessary piping, electrical connections, controls, and pumps to extract contaminated groundwater and convey this water to the treatment building. Groundwater will be extracted from both the Upper Black Creek and the Lower Black Creek Aquifers where the levels of trichloroethene exceeded the maximum contaminant level as specified in the Safe Drinking Water Act. The maximum contaminant level for trichloroethene is 5 micrograms per liter. Install additional monitoring wells to provide information to evaluate the extraction system as well as to complete the delineation of the trichloroethene plumes. Trichloroethene and other contaminants will be removed from the water through the use of activated carbon. A monitoring program will be established to evaluate the effectiveness of the groundwater extraction system, the effectiveness of the groundwater treatment system, and to monitor the groundwater plumes. An evaluation/review of this remedy will occur every five year until the groundwater cleanup levels are achieved. The estimated flow rate through the treatment/discharge system is 44 gallons per minute. The other cleanup activity to occur under this Interim Record of Decision is the installation of wellhead treatment at two municipal supply wells for the Town of Aberdeen, TOA-5 and TOA-9. The wellhead treatment will consist of passing the groundwater from the supply wells through activated carbon absorption units to remove the trichloroethene. Due to current federal budget constraints, the earliest expected timeframe to initiate any cleanup activities is in 2013.

EPA RECORD OF DECISION HAS BEEN SIGNED!
