General InformationMissisquoi National Wildlife Refuge,established in 1943, is located on the easternshore of Lake Champlain near the Canadianborder in Franklin County, Vermont.Hunting and fishing is permitted onportions of the refuge, in accordance withState and Federal seasons and regulations.Special arrangements can be made toaccommodate persons with disabilities bycontacting the Refuge Manager.
To ensure your safety and enjoyment whilevisiting Missisquoi, please take the time tobecome familiar with the followingregulations.
Individuals utilizing the refuge for huntingare subject to inspections of permits,licenses, hunting equipment, game, boats,vehicles, and their contents by federal orstate officers.
Hunting RegulationsThe regulations below are contained in thegeneral regulations which govern huntingon national wildlife refuges as set forth inTitle 50, Code of Federal Regulations.
Note: The hunting of moose, bear, andturkey are not allowed on the refuge, pleasesee Vermont regulations for other areasopen to these species.
PermitsAll persons hunting upland or big game onMissisquoi National Wildlife Refuge musthold a valid state hunting license in order toobtain a permit at refuge headquartersprior to hunting. The permit is issued on acalendar year basis, January 1 throughDecember 31, for a $10 annual fee.
During the Youth Deer Hunting Weekend,youth hunters (16 years and younger) mayhunt at no charge, but must obtain a biggame permit prior to hunting and mustreturn completed harvest information torefuge headquarters by December 31.
ReportingAll hunters are required to submit anannual report of the results of their hunt by
December 31 by completing the reportportion of their permit. Failure to do so willresult in denial of a permit for the followingyear.
ScoutingUnarmed hunters may scout areas that willbe open to hunting before a particularseason opens September 1. A huntingpermit is not required for scouting.
AmmunitionTo protect waterfowl and other migratorybirds from potential lead poisoning, nontoxicshot will be required for the shotgunhunting of all species except deer.
Dogs/Other PetsDogs are allowed for hunting migratorygame birds, cottontail rabbit, snowshoehare, and ruffed grouse during designatedseasons only. Other dogs and pets must beconfined or on a leash.
Guiding/Other Commercial ActivitiesNo person, including but not limited to aguide, guide service, outfitter, club, or otherorganization shall provide assistance,services, or equipment to any other personfor compensation on National WildlifeRefuge lands unless they have obtained aSpecial Use Permit from the RefugeManager. Likewise, it is the responsibility ofthe individual utilizing the services of aguide, guide service, etc. to verify that theyhave obtained the required permit. Failureto comply with this provision subjects eachhunter in the party to a fine if convicted ofthis violation.
Upland GameOnly ruffed grouse, cottontail rabbit,snowshoe hare and gray squirrels may behunted.
Hunters may not enter closed areas of therefuge for any reason, except for therecovery of legally harvested animals, andin that case may not carry a weapon.
Only shotguns, muzzleloaders, or archeryequipment may be used on open areas eastof the Missisquoi River and on Shad Island.
Hunting is not permitted from the end ofsnowshoe hare and rabbit season throughSeptember 1.
Open season will be as follows:
Gray SquirrelSeptember 1 to December 31, 2014.
Rabbits and HareSeptember 27, 2014 to March 8, 2015.
Ruffed GrouseSeptember 27 to December 31, 2014.
Big GameOnly deer may be hunted.
Hunters may not enter closed areas of therefuge for any reason, except for therecovery of legally harvested animals withthe consent of a refuge employee, and inthat case may not carry a weapon.
Only shotguns, muzzleloaders, or archeryequipment may be used on open areas eastand north of Vermont Route 78. Rifles maynot be used in these areas at any time.
During the State-designated muzzleloaderseason and Youth Deer Hunting Weekend,hunters may hunt the Long Marsh andMetcalfe Island areas, in addition to otheropen areas.
All hunters, during the State regularfirearms season, Youth Deer HuntingWeekend, and muzzleloader deer hunt mustwear in a conspicuous manner on head,chest and back a minimum of 400 squareinches of solid-colored hunter orangeclothing or material.
Permanent tree stands and ground blindsare prohibited. Temporary portable treestands and ground blinds are acceptable inaccordance with state regulations guidingtheir use on state wildlife managementareas. Written notation from the refugemanager is required on the big game permitprior to leaving a temporary stand or blindunattended. However, this does not grantexclusive use of an area or site.

Archery SeasonOctober 4 to October 26, and December 6 to December 14, 2014.
Regular SeasonNovember 15 to November 30, 2014.
Muzzleloader SeasonDecember 6 to December 14, 2014.
Youth Deer HuntNovember 8 to 9, 2014.
Prohibited ActivitiesLittering
Spotlighting - artificial light may not beused to locate wildlife.
Baiting or hunting over bait, salt or anyattractant.
Target practice
Use or possession of alcoholic beverageswhile hunting.
Taking of wildlife or plants (includingcutting trees or brush) other than asspecified in this brochure.
Driving or screwing a nail, spike or othermetal object into a tree or to hunt from anytree in which such an object has beendriven.
Searching for or removing any object ofantiquity including arrowheads, pottery orother artifacts.
Use of motorized vehicles is prohibited inhunting areas.
