A sombre, moving commemorative from the Mint of Poland, this poignant coin marks the 70th anniversary of one of the darkest moments of World War II – the Katyń Massacre.

The Katyń Massacre originally referred only to the murder of Polish military offi cers by Russian forces in a forest near the village of Katyn, Russia in 1940. However, as this was one of several mass executions carried out by the Soviet Secret Police, the NKVD, the term ‘Katyń Massacre’ now represents the systematic liquidation of approximately 22,000 Polish nationals at a variety of sites in April and May of 1940. In a bizarre, macabre twist, Poland’s association of Katyń and national tragedy continued to the actual 70th anniversary celebrations. Travelling to the Smolensk-North Airport in Russia to deliver a speech to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyń massacre, the Polish President Lech Kaczyński, his wife, and 87 other politicians and high-ranking army offi cers were killed as the plane crashed whilst trying to land in heavy fog.

A horrifying reminder of the brutality of war, the Mint of Poland was authorised to create fi tting legal tender commemoratives to mark the 70th anniversary of the tragedy. Bearing ‘Katyń’ on the reverse, above a Polish military cap, this 27mm Al-Cu-Zinc BU 2zł is an affordable tribute to the massacre, whilst the 32mm, 14.14g Antiqued sterling silver Proof, depicting the trees of the Katyń Forest fused with crosses in honour of the dead, is a truly haunting collector coin.
