NOTE: John Simpson was born in England in 1892. He arrived in Australia in 1910 after jumping ship and deserting from the Merchant Navy. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force hoping this would give him the opportunity to get back to England. Simpson became famous for his work as a stretcher-bearer and as the man with the donkey at Gallipoli before his death at the young age of 22. He used the donkey for carrying water, as well as for trans-porting wounded men day and night in Monash Valley to the beach on ANZAC Cove. He saved many lives before he met his death from machine gun fire. The War Diary of the 3rd Field Ambulance commended “the excellence of the work performed by Pfc Simpson continu-ously since landing.” The above is an excerpt from a printed story furnished by Lion Bill Sutton. Lion Bill provides the story with each pin that he trades.
Lion Dave Armstrong (MT) has advised that he has three military pins in the pipeline and is expecting them shortly. Out of tremendous respect we have for Lion Dave and to avoid hav-ing him being “stuck” with a lot of pins, we are reserving this space for his pins. As soon as we receive one each for scanning, we will reissue this page and transmit it to you.
