Come Worship With Us

Christ the King Sunday, St. Andrew’s has joined the movement toward…

…blue vestments!

You might be thinking, “What’s the big deal about blue? Purple seemed to be working just fine.” And it’s true: purple was long associated with both Advent and Lent. Other seasons of the Church Calendar share the same colors: Epiphany and Ordi-nary Time dress in living green to emphasize their focus on growth while Christmas and Easter clothe themselves in cele-bratory white. Advent and Lent are both times of anticipation, so why shouldn’t they match as well?

From the Rector

Advent 2021 Advent is upon us, and thanks to the St. Andrew’s Altar Guild, we have new cause to celebrate this year. With their arrival just in time to receive official consecration at the Bishop’s visit on

The Rev. Jonathan Hanneman

Advent and Christmas Services November 28—First Sunday of Advent December 5—Second Sunday of Advent December 12—Third Sunday of Advent December 19—Fourth Sunday of Advent December 24 @ 4:00pm—Christmas Pageant December 24 @ 9:30pm—Festive Choral Service December 25 @ 10:30am—Christmas Day (with St. James’ at St. Andrew’s)

Although the Church Calendar does indeed offer these two seasons of preparation, the nature of each is profoundly distinct—much more so than the other seasons and their reflections. Lent carries an internal focus—freeing ourselves of the bur-dens that tie us to the grave as we prepare to follow Jesus to the cross. Advent’s heart, however, is external—we’re readying not only ourselves but the whole world for the arrival of our long-awaited Lord. We want everyone and everything around us to be prepared. To help express this differentiation, most congregations have now left the penitent associations of purple to Lent while welcoming outward-facing Advent with the royal blue of the clear winter sky. I invite you to join us this fresh season of preparation in welcoming the new Church Year. The world has been a mess for quite a while, so it’s going to take all of us using our various gifts together to get everything in order for the coming arrival of the King of Kings.

So out with the old, and in with the BLUE!

Rebuild Mission to Lake Charles Kathy and Ed Morrow are in the early stages of planning a Rebuild Mission to Lake Charles, LA. Lake Charles was hit by 2 hurricanes, and volunteers are needed to help the community get back on their feet. We will be working with Samaritan’s Purse again this year. They are very well or-ganized and have taken great care of our volunteers in past Rebuild missions in Southern TX. There is no charge for rooms or meals.

Everything we need in materials and tools are also provided. Sign up will be later. Pencil the dates Monday, March 7 through Friday, March 11 (our workdays). Allow time for travel to and from. It is about a 14-hour trip. Lake Charles is near Houston, TX. Call Kathy or Ed Morrow for questions.

Angel Tree Ministry This Christmas, St Andrew’s will once again bring joy to the children of Las Cruces through the Angel Tree Ministry. Through this ministry, we provide gifts for children of incar-cerated parents in the name of that parent. We need help! If you could donate a little time making phone calls to a care giver to confirm their participation in the pro-gram and to make sure we have the correct address for gift de-livery. We are also distributing Angel gift tags from a table in the Gathering Space after Sunday services. We will be there every Sunday through December 19. Stop by to choose a child to purchase a gift for! We are asking that you use a gift bag for your gift this year so that we can add a special message and book from Angel Tree Ministries. On Monday, December 20, we will be at the church for delivery volunteers to pick up gifts. We need several volunteers to deliver gifts to the children’s homes before Decem-ber 25. Please contact Liz Painter or Silvia Schavz if you can volunteer for any of these activi-ties, or if you have any questions. Blessings, Liz 505-215-3112 Silvia 575-644-1993

S-H-O-E-B-O-X-E-S The annual shoebox stuffing party will be held on December 5, 2021, at 2:00 PM in the Parish Hall. Everyone is invited!! Immediately after the stuffing and blessing, we will load the shoeboxes into the Ander-son's horse trailer for delivery to Columbus, NM. The gifts will be handed out to the children at the elementary school in Palomas, Mexi-co, during their annual Christmas party on December 16th. Here are a couple of photos from 2020. Due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the elementary school was closed, but the children still received their gifts through creative drive-through efforts. Thank you, St. Andrew’s, for honoring these children in HIS name. I am astounded by your generous contributions, and thankful to witness the holy spirit work in each of you for this ministry. —Jan Miskovich
