antigua Antigua (pronounced An-tee-ga) is an island of 108 square miles located in the heart of the Caribbean, latitude 17.03 degrees N. forming one of the islands of the Eastern Caribbean. It is 4 ½ hours flying time from Toronto or Montreal, 3 ½ hours from New York, 3 hours from Miami and 7 hours from London. Antigua has an international airport with flights daily to many parts of the world.
Before 1493, Antigua was previously inhabited by Caribs and Arawaks, but the island’s romantic history began with its discovery in 1493 by Christopher Columbus who named it after Santa Maria la Antigua Church in Seville, Spain. Antigua subsequently was a much fought over prize among Spain, France and England, but except for a brief occupancy by the French, has remained British.
The National Geographic says aptly of Antigua “Safe anchorage – one of the best in the Caribbean, and surely the prettiest.” Antigua is renowned for its superb coral beaches and an average temperature of 76 degrees F in January/February to 83 degrees in August/September. Rainfall is an average of 45 inches per year with an average humidity of 79%.
The neighboring sister island of Barbuda with a population of 1200 and a size of 62 square miles also has excellent beaches, and is well know for it fish, lobster and 87 sunken wrecks, just waiting to be explored.
Antigua and Barbuda became a Sovereign Independent Nation with the British Commonwealth on November 1st, 1981. The country remains a monarchy, with a Governor General as a representative of Her First Majesty the Queen, and is administered by a Prime Minister and an Upper and Lower House of Parliament.

OUR PROUD HISTORYFounded in 1982, the University of Health Sciences Antigua, which sits on 50 acres, is one of the oldest private medical schools in the Caribbean. Formerly a tracking site for the U.S. space program, UHSA is now part of the beautiful Historic National Parks area of English Harbor. With lovely greenery and flowers throughout the campus along with well–manicured lawns, students have the perfect environment for study. Within this peaceful environment, wireless internet connects the entire campus both within the buildings and the surrounding lands.
A Personalized Approach to Medical Education
AT UHSA, YOU ARE MORE THAN JUST A NUMBER UHSA prides itself on insuring that our students have individualized attention. Many of our faculty live on the school campus and are accessible to students. This allows for one to one attention even outside the class-room. Further, class size at UHSA is limited so as to promote a low student/ professor ratio.
MODERN CURRICULUM We care about the success of our students and strive to provide the curriculum, the faculty and the facilities that will insure success. UHSA’s curriculum is based upon the curriculum of U.S. medical schools and stresses problem-based methods of teaching within the classroom along with case studies.

EXCELLENCE IN FACULTY UHSA has expert faculty with outstanding credentials. Many of our faculty have been recruited from U.S. medical schools and leading institutions around the world. They are dedicated to making UHSA students the best possible physicians.
Faculty advisors are also available for guidance and assistance; many of whom live on campus.
PATIENT EXPOSURE FROM THE BEGINNING UHSA students begin to work with patients in the first semester at local clinics around the island where they are supervised by both UHSA faculty as well as experienced practicing physicians on staff at the clinics and hospitals on the island.
Several times a year, the University conducts an island-wide project where students and faculty hold clinics in various districts. Free services in these clinics include blood pressures screenings, cholesterol and diabetes testing and nutrition counseling. Research data is being compiled for this project to provide future statistics to the Ministry of Health for the island.
WE HELP YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY Our admissions officers will assist in every step of the admissions process from the time that the student begins the application process, is accepted, decides on housing choices, and arrives on campus. Students are greeted at the airport and transported to the campus by campus personnel. Once a student begins to live on campus, UHSA staff in every department strive to make campus living a pleasant “home away from home “ experience.
TUITION AND FEES UHSA has made having an excellent, quality education affordable for its students. Additionally, there are financing options based upon need.
The tuition for the UHSA School of Medicine is $15,600 for the Basic Science years and $19,400 for the Clinical years.

Health Professionals ProgramIn further keeping with our institution’s philosophy of medical education geared towards primary healthcare, we have developed a Heath Professionals Program leading to the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. The Health Professionals Program is an innovative, integrated curriculum that prepares the graduate to meet the challenges of today’s healthcare system. The program is an attempt to increase the number of primary healthcare physicians practicing in rural and medically underserved areas around the world including the United States.
One of the assumptions made in the development of our Health Professionals Program is that students accepted into the program are learners who take responsibility for managing their learning. Consequently, the institution expects individuals participating in the program to read and absorb the materials presented to them on our course management system, as well as those presented during academic sessions. The inability to meet with the above expectations will defeat the objective of the program.
The Health Professionals Program consists of the Basic Sciences studies and clinical work leading to the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. The program is 10 trimesters in duration. The Basic Sciences portion of the program consists of 5 trimesters (20 months) while the clinical portion of the program consists of 78 weeks (approximately 20 months), totaling 40 months to complete the M.D. program.
Who is Eligible to Apply? The following are eligible for admission:1. Nurses2. Physician Assistants3. Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.)4. Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.)5. Dentists (D.D.S. or D.M.D.)6. B.A./B.S. degree holders in any science field
Applicants who hold the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Dental Medicine Degree (DMD) will be considered for advanced standing if their dental school is listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED).

1st through 4th TrimesterStudents attend classes for 4 weeks in each of the 4 trimester segments in Antigua. At the end of each of the 4 week sessions, the student returns to their place of residence where he/she is expected to do password protected assignments via our course management system, on the areas of the course that are not covered while in Antigua.
Beginning in the first trimester, students are also exposed to patient care at the hospital and various health clinics in Antigua.
During the Basic Sciences segment, students also fulfill their pre-clinical requirements with their mentor (s). The pre-clinical requirements provide students with observational experience with physicians in primary care settings such as hospitals, a physician’s office or a nursing home.
By participating in pre-clinical electives, students can directly observe the practical application of some of their clinical classroom learning. In addition, students also learn the elements of a good doctor-patient relationship and communication skills that are essential in their practice of medicine.
Student/Faculty contact between the sessions and during the pre-clinical electives are integral parts of the Health Professionals Program curriculum.
One of the highlights of the curriculum is the tutorials. Approximately 10% to 20% of the course is presented in a tutorial fashion with the use of high information technology ranging from software especially selected and designed for the course, to interactive on-line learning.
A decelerated program is available whereby students are allowed to spread the course work of the first year of the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program over two years. The student may be invited into the program if the Academic Committee believes that the student’s preparation for the program would be strengthened by deceleration in the first year of course work.
5th TrimesterAt the completion of the 4th trimester in the Basics Sciences Curriculum, students commence the fifth (5th) trimester (approximately 16 weeks) at the hospitals in the United States, Puerto Rico and other hospitals sites around the world. During this period, students complete a comprehensive review of the USMLE Step I in order to insure passing of the licensure examination. The review is offered by experienced members of the faculty, guest lecturers and review modalities such as the Falcon Review and problem based computer modules. In addition, students are given practice exams and structured curriculum review materials to enhance test taking skills. Students also have a chance to discuss difficult areas identified by practice tests with resource persons and experienced members of the faculty.
At the conclusion of the 5th trimester course work, students will take the USMLE Step I before commencing the clinical portion of the curriculum.
6th through 10th TrimesterClinical rotations are completed during the sixth (6th) to the tenth (10th) trimesters. The student spends 48 weeks for the core clinical rotations and 30 weeks of electives totaling 78 weeks.

antigua Antigua (pronounced An-tee-ga) is an island of 108 square miles located in the heart of the Caribbean, latitude 17.03 degrees N. forming one of the islands of the Eastern Caribbean.
