* The resident expertise prescribed by STANAG 3114 has evolved into teaching The Flight Medic Course , MEDEVAC Doctrine Course, Joint En route Care Course and Aeromedical Psychology Course. The GME graduates (Aerospace Medicine Specialists) are the clinical quality control to ensure Aviation medicine and Aeromedical Training are relevant and current.

The Shared History of Helicopters , Flight School RL Progression and and annual check rides and perpetual institutional introspection creates a unique bond between the doctor and the aviator. The Doctor is the first gate a flight candidate must pass through in order to qualify for flight duty, the first classes upon entry into flight school are aviation medicine classes. The current flight medic Course fills a gap that existed (still exists at some posts and in some states) The training gap is Medics were arriving to USASAM without skills, not even the minimum standard of medical proficiency. This grew our of the MEDEVAC Communities loss of Vietnam -Combat trained medics retiring in the mid to late 80s. The solution was the Flight Medic Course- The course provided ready access to card courses and civilian qualifications. A necessity in the Military assistance to Safety and Traffic (MAST) support our MEDEVAC units participated in. The Instructor Writers assigned to USASAM were also pulling duty as flight medics then at FLAT IRON a unit that once maintained a 24 hour a day airborne presence – now 24 hour readiness posture. The US Army Aviation Department of Evaluations and Standards is located at Fort Rucker and the Flight Medics relationship with the Aircrew Training Program became formalized in the Aircrew Training Manual. This evolved over the last 20 years to the current model – that is still fixing what the flight medic community sees as a training deficiency in the typical 68W arriving to the MEDEVAC unit. The Medical deficiency is addressed by the NRP program. The indoctrination into Aviation can be facilitated and accelerated by a brief TDY at Rucker to ensure Paramedics understand their mission in the Army’s primary platforms- Ground and Air Ambulances. The Medicine of the Flight Medic Course can be taught anywhere good medicine is taught- However practicing medicine independently in the back of an airborne helicopter presents several communication, physical and medical challenges that surprise even the seasoned trauma specialist.
