About FARA

The Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) is the apex connental organisaon responsible forcoordinang and advocang for agricultural research-for-development. (AR4D). It serves as the entry point for agricultural research iniaves designed to have a connental reach or a sub-connental reach spanning more than one sub-region.

FARA serves as the technical arm of the African Union Commission (AUC) on maers concerning agricultural science, technology and innovaon. FARA has provided a connental forum for stakeholders in AR4D to shape the vision and agenda for the sub-sector and to mobilise themselves to respond to key connent wide development frameworks, notably the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).

FARA's vision: Reduced poverty in Africa as a result of sustainable broad-based agricultural growth and improved livelihoods, parcularly of smallholder and pastoral enterprises.

FARA's mission: Creaon of broad-based improvements in agricultural producvity, compeveness and markets by connental-level strengthening of capacity for agricultural innovaon.

FARA's Value Proposion: Strengthening Africa's capacity for innovaon and transformaon by visioning its strategic direcon, integrang its capacies for change and creang an enabling policy environment for implementaon.

FARA's strategic direcon is derived from and aligned to the Science Agenda for Agriculture in Africa (S3A), which is in turn designed to support the realizaon of the CAADP vision. FARA's programme is organized around three strategic priories, namely: Visioning Africa's agricultural transformaon with foresight, strategic analysis and partnerships to enable Africa to determine the future of its agriculture, with proacve approaches to exploing opportunies in agribusiness, trade and markets, taking best advantage of emerging sciences, technologies and risk migaon and using the combined strengths of public and private stakeholders.

Integrang capacies for change by making the different actors aware of each other's capacies and contribuons, connecng instuons and matching capacity supply to demand to create consolidated, high-capacity and effecve African agricultural innovaon systems exploing relave instuonal collaborave advantages to mutual benefit while also strengthening their own human and instuonal capacies

Enabling environment for implementaon, inially through evidence-based advocacy, communicaon and widespread stakeholder awareness and engagement and to generate enabling policies, and then ensure that they get the stakeholder support required for the sustainable implementaon of programmes for African agricultural innovaon

Key to this is the delivery of three Key Results, which respond to the strategic priories expressed by FARA's clients. These are:

Key Result 1: Stakeholders determine how the sector should be transformed and undertake collecve acons in a gender-sensive mannerKey Result 2: Strengthened and integrated connental capacity responding to stakeholder demands within the agricultural innovaon system in a gender-sensive mannerKey Result 3: Enabling environment for increased AR4D investment and implementaon of agricultural innovaon systems in a gender-sensive manner

FARA's donors are the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Danish Internaonal Development Agency (DANIDA), the Department for Internaonal Development (DFID), the European Commission (EC), the Consultave Group for Internaonal Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperaon (NORAD), Australian Agency for Internaonal Development (AusAiD), and the World Bank.
