c Operate dishwasher only whenit’s full. Let the dishes accumulatein dishwasher. When you put inonly a partial load, use the RINSE& HOLD cycle to rinse off heavysoils. Be sure to latch the doorwhen waiting for a full load. This helps keep soils moist, easierto remove.

● If you don’t need your dishesright away, use your ENERGYSAVER (no-heat boost) dryingoption that turns the drying heateroff automatically. Dishes drynaturally over a longer period suchas overnight.

● Always select the cycle thatuses least amount of water thatwill remove the soil from theload. (See the Operating section).

Good dishwashing startswith HOT water. To get dishes clean and dry, youneed hot water. To help you getwater of the proper temperature, your dishwasher automaticallyheats the water in the wash cycle. For good washing and drying, theentering water must be at least120°F. To prevent dish damage, inlet water should not exceed 150°F.

How to test water temperature:Higher water temperature isneeded to dissolve grease andactivate powder detergents.

Check you water temperature witha candy or meat thermometer. Turnon the hot water faucet nearest thedishwasher. Put the thermometer ina glass and let the water runcontinuously into the glass untilthe temperature stops rising. If thewater temperature is below 120°F.,adiust your water heater.

How to use a rinse agent...A rinse agent makes water flow offdishes quicker than usual. Thislessens water spotting and makesdrying faster, too.

For best dishwashing performance, use of a rinse agent such as JET-DRY brand is recommended.

Rinse agents come in either liquidor solid form. Your dishwasheruses the liquid form.

How to fill the rinse agentdispenser. Unscrew the cap. Addthe liquid rinse agent until it justreaches the bottom of the lip insidethe dispenser opening. Replace thecap. The dispenser automaticallyreleases the rinse agent into thefinal rinse water.

If you accidentally spill: Wipe upthe rinse agent with a damp cloth.Don’t leave the spill in thedishwasher. It can keep yourdetergent from working.

How to choose and use theright detergent.First, use only powder or liquiddetergent specifically made foruse in dishwashers. Other typeswill cause oversudsing.

Second, check the phosphatecontent. Phosphate helps preventhard-water materials from formingspots or film on your dishes. Ifyour water is hard (7 grains ormore), your detergent has to workharder. Detergents with a higherphosphate level will probably workbetter. If the phosphate content islow (8.7% or less), you’ll have touse extra detergent with hard water,

Your water department can tellyou how hard your water is. Socan your county extension agentor your area’s water softenercompany. Just call and ask themhow many “grains” of hardness isin your water.

. . .Helpful hints: If outside If yo;”can’t find any rinse agent, How much detergent should you

not used hot water for some time, the water in the ui~es will be cold. Greenwich, CT 06830

Turn on the hot w;ter faucet at thesink and allow it to run until thewater is hot. Then start thedishwasher. If you’ve recently donelaundry or run hot water forshowers, give your water heatertime to recover before operating thedishwasher.

To improve washability if thewater is less than 120°F. and youcannot adjust your water heater:Select a longer cycle and fill bothdetergent cups at least half-fullwith detergent.

“hard” or “soft’”? With hard water, you need extra detergent to getdishes clean. With soft water, youneed less detergent.

Too much detergent with soft waternot only wastes money, it can beharmful. It can cause a permanentcloudiness of glassware, called“etching.” An outside layer ofglass is etched away! But why takea chance when it’s easy to find outthe hardness of your water.

6

Keep your detergent fresh and~ry. Under the sink isn’t a good.,lace to store detergent. Too muchmoisture. Don’t pu; powderdetergent into the dispenser untilyou ‘re ready to wash dishes, either. (It won’t be fresh OR dry.)

If your powder detergent getsold or lumpy, throw it away. Itwon’t wash well. Old detergentoften won’t dissolve. If you use a liquid dishwasherdetergent, these precautions arenot necessary because liquiddetergents don’t “lump” as theyage or come in contact with water.

You’ll find two detergentdispensers on the inside door ofyour dishwasher. There are two, because some cycles use twowashes.

Always close the main cup tightly. When it is firmly latched, you willhear a clicking sound. Do notovertighten.

NOTE: Detergent cup may beopened manually with no harm.Turn handle counterclockwiseuntil it releases. A snapping soundis normal when it opens,

How to prepare the dishesfor washingIf this is your first dishwasher, orif you’re replacing a much oldermodel, you may wonder how muchpreparation your dishes need.Actually very little. Pre-rinsing ofnormal food soils is not necessary. With common sense and a littlepractice, you’ll soon know whatfoods to remove. Here are someguidelines:

1. Scrape off bones, seeds, skins, toothpicks and other hard solids. Itis also best to remove hwd shelledvegetables, meat trimmings, leafyvegetables and crusts. Removeexcessive quantities of oil or grease.

Detergent Usage Guide (powder or liquid)

CYCLES

POTSCRUBBER &NOW WASH

2. Remove large quantities of anyfood. Your dishwasher has a built-insoft food disposer that pulverizessoft food bits and flushes themaway. It can handle small amountsof soft foods, but large amounts willbe difficult to handle.

3. Try to remove food scraps andplace dishes in dishwasher beforesoils have a chance to dry andbecome hard. Dishes with dried-onsoils are more difficult to washand may not come clean in theNORMAL WASH cycle. Rememberto use your RINSE& HOLD cyclefor small “holding” loads.

Note: The foods mentioned aboveare examples only. Other foods notmentioned may also need to beremoved from your dishes. You mayalso want to consider removingfoods such as mustard, mayonnaise, vinegar, lemon juice and other foodsthat can cause discoloration ofstainless steel if allowed to remainon dishes for a long period of time.

When using the POTSCRUBBERcycle, less preparation is requiredbefore loading. The POTSCRUBBERcycle can wash heavily-soileddishes and remove dried-on andbaked-on soils from pots, pansand casseroles. However, itemswith burned-on soils may not comeclean, and the dishwasher cannotremove burn marks or restorefading caused by overheatingduring cooking.

How to load your dishwasher How to load the TOP RACK

This i.~ a randt]m mixed lc~ad, the mc~.~t c~~mmcm typeyou will have.

Make sure dishes are properly loaded to insure thatwater can reach the soiled surfaces. The wash arm inthe bottom sprays water up. The tower that rises in thecenter sends water out over the dishes to wash theitems in the upper rack. A spray arm in the top washesdown also. Make sure to place tall items to the outsideso the upper wash arm is not blocked.

The top rack is best for glasses, cups and saucers. Cupsand glasses fit best along the sides. This is the place fordishwasher-safe plastics, too. Make sure small plasticitems are lodged in tightly so they can’t fall onto theCalrod’’’heating unit. Arrange stemware so that it cannotmove easily. Don’t let the glasses touch each other.

WATCH OUT FOR THIS.

The wash tower rises through the center of the bottomrack during the wash and rinse portions of the cycle.Don’t block it or load tall things next to it. Also, becareful not to let a portion of an item such as a pot ordish handle extend through the bottom rack. This couldblock the wash arm and cause poor washing results.

Sauce pans, mixing bowls and other small items maybe placed—face down—in the top rack. The top rackis handy for all kinds of odd shapes.

A fuse in your home may be blown, or the circuit breaker tripped. Replace fuse orreset circuit breaker. Remove any other appliances from the circuit.

Utensils may not be secure on rack pins, or something small may have dropped fromthe rack. Water is causing utensils to rattle. Make sure everything is securely placedin dishwasher.

Make sure inlet water temperature is correct. (See How To Test Water Temperaturesection.)

Unload the bottom rack first. Water from dishes in the top rack may be spilling into thebottom rack.

Check for improper loading. Dishes shouldn’t nest together. Avoid overloading.

Check the rinse agent dispenser to see that it’s not empty.

Check inlet water temperature. It should be at least 120°F. (To test, see How To TestWater Temperature section.)

Water pressure may be temporarily low. Turn on a faucet. Is water coming out slowerthan usual? If so, wait until pressure is normal before using your dishwasher.

Plugged air gap. (See Care and Cleaning section.)

Improper rack loading. (See Loading section.)

Water may not be reaching the detergent cups. Move dishes that may be blockingdetergent cup.

The dispenser cover may not be opening or may be blocked by improperly loadeditems. If you used a powder detergent, open the cup and remove any caked-ondetergent. If the cup still doesn’t open automatically, call for service.

Detergent may be old. If the powder detergent is hard or caked in the box, throw itaway. The detergent may not be working well. Try another brand.

Cycle Indicator Dial must be in OFF position for cup lid to close and latch properly. Ifyou unlatch the door and open it to dry your dishes, the Cycle Indicator Dial does notadvance to OFF by itself.

Tea or coffee can stain cups. Remove the stain by hand, using a solution of 1/2 cupbleach and 3 cups warm water.

An overall yellow or brown film on dishes or glassware can be caused by iron depositsin water. A special filter in the water supply line is the only way to correct this problem.Your water softener company can tell you about the filter.

Yellow film on sterling silver results when you wash copper utensils in the same load.Silver polish will usually remove this stain.

PROBLEM

SPOTS AND FILMINCON GLASSES ANDFLATWARE

CLOUDINESS ONGLASSWARE

CHIPPING OF CHINA

POSSIBLE CAUSE

Spotting can be caused by all these things:

● Extremely hard water. (See How To Choose and Use Detergent section. )

● Low inlet water temperature. (See How To Test Water Temperature section. )

● Overloading the dishwasher.

● Improper loading. (See Loading section. )

● Old or damp powder detergent.

● Phosphate level in detergent too low. (See How to Choose and Use Detergent section. )

● Rinse agent dispenser empty. (See How To Use Rinse Agent section. )

● Too little detergent. (See How to Choose and Use Detergent section. )

Local water conditions and personal preferences vary. Try several brands of detergentsto find one that gives the best results for you. A liquid dishwasher detergent may helpreduce filming.

To remove stubborn spots and film from glassware:

1. Remove all metal utensils from the dishwasher.

2. Do not add detergent.

3. Select NORMAL WASH cycle.

4. Start the dishwasher and allow to run for 18 to 22 minutes. The dishwasher will nowbe in the main wash.

5. Then open the door and pour 2 cups (500 ml) of white vinegar into the bottom of thedishwasher.

6. Close the door and allow to complete the cycle.

If vinegar rinse doesn’t work: Repeat as above, except use 1/4 cup (60 ml) of citricacid crystals instead of vinegar. (Most drugstores carry citric acid crystals. If yoursdoesn’t, call GE Factory Service.)

Using a vinegar or citric acid crystal rinse more than twice a month? Consider a homewater softener.

If vinegar or citric acid crystal rinse doesn’t work, the cloudiness is “etching.” The filmcannot be removed.

It can be prevented: Use less detergent if you have soft water. Wash glassware in theshortest cycle that will get them clean.

Water temperature entering dishwasher exceeds 150°F.

Rough handling can cause chipping. Load with care. Make sure glassware and chinaare secure and can’t jar loose. (See Loading section. ) Make sure tall glasses andstemware will clear the top of the tub when you push the rack into the dishwasher.

Always use the top rack for delicate items.

PROBLEM

BLACK OR GRAYMARKS ON DISHES

SMALL AMOUNT OFWATER STANDINGIN THE BOTTOMOF THE TUB

WATER WON’T PUMPOUT OF THE TUB

SUDS IN THE TUB

DISHWASHERLEAKS

MOTOR HUMS

POSSIBLE CAUSE

Aluminum utensils often leave marks when they rub against dishes. Remove markswith a mild abrasive cleanser.

Water around the outlet on the tub bottom at the back of the tub is normal. It is cleanwater. It’s there to keep the water seal lubricated.

If the entire bottom of the tub has water, you may have a drain problem. Clean the airgap, if you have one. (See Care and Cleaning section.)

Check the kitchen sink. Is it draining well? You may need a plumber.

If dishwasher drains into disposer, run disposer to clear. Be sure disposer is notclogged.

Sudsing detergents are not meant for dishwashers. USE ONLY AUTOMATICDISHWASHER DETERGENTS TO AVOID SUDSING.

To remove suds from the tub: Open the dishwasher. Let suds evaporate. Add 1 gallonof cold water to the tub. Close and latch the dishwasher. Pump out water by slowlyturning the control dial until a drain period is reached.

Repeat if necessary.

Suds can cause unit to overflow. That’s why it’s so important to use a detergent that’sdesigned for automatic dishwashers.

Spilling the rinse agent can cause foam during washing. This can lead to overflowing.Wipe up accidental spill of rinse agent with a damp cloth.

Dishwasher has not been used on a regular basis.

If you do not use your dishwasher often, set it to fill and pump out once every week. This will help keep the seal moist, and the garbage disposer clear.

Clean the control panel with alightly dampened cloth. Drythoroughly. Do not use abrasivesor sharp objects on the panel. Theycan damage it.

Clean the outside with a goodappliance polish wax. The outsidecabinet finish is durable, but it canscratch. So use no scouring pads,or harsh or gritty cleaners.

Built-in dishwashersoften use an air gap.Keep it clean. An air gap is a plumbing device. Itprotects your dishwasher againstwater backing up into it if a drainclogs. The air gap is not a part ofthe dishwasher. And you may noteven have one. Not all plumbingcodes require air gaps.

Appliance Polish Wax & Cleaner(Cat. No. WR97X0216) is availablefrom GE Appliance Parts Marts.

The inside usually takes care ofitself. If it should ever needcleaning, use a mild cleansingpowder. Scouring pads and harshcleaners can mar the finish.

If you have an air gap, check it atleast once a month. IT IS NOTPART OF YOUR DISHWASHER.IT IS NOT COVERED IN YOURWARRANTY.

The air gap is easy to clean. With most types, first turn off thedishwasher, then lift off thechrome cover. Then unscrew theplastic cap and check for anybuild-up of grit. A toothpick makescleaning easy.

Check the air gap any time yourdishwasher isn’t draining well.

Not using your dishwasher -in winter? Protect againstfreezing. If your dishwasher is left in anunheated place during the winter, ask a service technician to:

● Cut off electric power to thedishwasher. Remove fuses or tripcircuit breaker.

● Turn off the water supply.

● Disconnect the water inlet linefrom the water valve.

● Drain water from the inlet lineand water valve. (Use a pan tocatch the water. )

● Reconnect the water inlet line tothe water valve.

● Remove the plug in the bottom ofthe rubber boot. Drain completely, then reinstall plug and clamp.

● Drain the collection chamber atrear of unit below filter bydisconnecting hose to pump.Reconnect after draining.
