John Paul Sánchez, M.D., M.P.H. Assistant Dean, Diversity and Inclusion Office of Diversity and Community Engagement Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

Course Description & Objectives:Increasing the number of Latino health faculty is critical to achieving health equity. However, beyond faculty development, little has been done to develop the academic dentistry pipeline. It has been documented that racial and ethnic minority health care providers tend to practice in underserved communities, facilitate patient satisfaction, and help to create a more robust learning environment. Additionally, diverse faculty is critical to institutional recruitment, decision-making, policies, practices, curriculum, and fulfillment of accrediting bodies’ diversity standard. In 2008, only 5.5% of dentistry school faculty self identified as Hispanic. The same trend is seen in medicine with 4.3% of medical school faculty self identified as Hispanic. Over the past 10 years, efforts to promote Hispanic faculty engagement and sustainment in academia have fallen short of achieving a critical mass. Furthermore, little effort has been dedicated to promoting downstream interest in academia, specifically among Hispanic medical students. The Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP) Initiative and the Hispanic Serving Health Professions Schools Inc. (HSHPS) will share their collaborative work in enhancing Hispanic inclusion in the academic medicine pipeline oorm medical student training to faculty development. The co-facilitators will discuss their efforts in building Hispanic inclusion in the academic medicine pipeline, including a summary of medical school practices targeting medical students and the introduction of a newly created academic medicine career guide. Audience participants will be engaged to assess strategies employed by other health professions (e.g. Nursing, Public Health, Dentistry, etc.) to promoting Hispanic interest in academia and in conceptualizing new, innovative ways to promote Hispanic graduate student interest.
