What is Video?• Video in language learning may mean the use
of popular films on video to provide content, and the use of smaller pieces of broadcast materials such as short documentaries and television advertisements.
Why use video in the classroom?• expose students to authentic materials.• EFL learners get to experience real spoken
discourse• provide more motivation and interest • opportunity to read visual as well listen to
auditory messages simultaneously • demonstrate specific manual skills or physical
processes• promote learning in students with high visual
orientation in their learning styles
How to Use Videos in the Classroom
• 1. Pre-viewing - Predict the events;• 2. While-viewing - Working in pairs, note
everything they saw and heard. Elicit class-level feedback, then play back to confirm;
• 3. Post-viewing - Review and answer general comprehension questions.
The Disadvantages of Using Videos in the Classroom
• video technology which might be scarce in school• may be boring if overused• may encourage passive learning • do not allow teachers to control over the
vocabulary and content
Criteria of video to be used in the classroom
• Intelligibility • appealing and engaging • focus on the language objectives of the lesson• aware of the length of the video• familiarity
Recommendations
• make sure that the videos used should be a supplement to the curriculum
• provide a variety of follow-up activities after each video viewing
• give out handouts with some new words or discussion questions before showing videos
