FeaturesTheiTrackSoloaudiointerfaceallowsyoutoconnectamicrophoneand/orguitartoaniPad,iPad2oriPad(3rdGeneration).ThesignalsconnectedtothephysicalinputsoftheiTrackSolocanthenberoutedtoyouraudiorecordingapp-forexample,GarageBand.Itcanalsobeusedtorouteaudiotoadigitalaudioworkstation(referredtothroughoutthisuserguideasa“DAW”)runningonalaptop(ordesktop)usingeitherMacOSorWindows.Ineithercase,themonitoringoutputfromtherecordingapporDAWwillappearattheiTrackSolo’sphysicaloutputs.

GETTING STARTED
Using the iTrack Solo with an iOS device
Powering the iTrack SoloThe iTrack Solo is an active device, and needs a DC power source to operate. It is important torememberthatwhenyouusetheiTrackSolowithaniPad,itwillnotbepoweredfromtheiOSdeviceviatheinterfacecable.
Use the supplied USB cable to connect the iTrack Solo to a standard Apple USB Power Supply(orotherstandardUSBpowersupply).Oneof these issuppliedwithevery iOSdevice,orcanbeobtainedseparately.ThefrontpanelUSBLED(7)will illuminatewhentheiTrackSoloispoweredandconnected.
Itisalsoimportanttonotethatwhenconnectedinthisway,theiTrackSolowillnotchargetheiOSdevice’sinternalbattery.
Connections to your iOS deviceThesuppliediOSinterfacecableshouldbeconnectedbetweentheDEVICELINKportontherearoftheiTrackSoloandyouriPad.ThiscablewillcarrytheaudiobetweentherecordingapponyouriOSdeviceandtheiTrackSoloinbothdirections,butdoesnotcarryDCpowerineitherdirection(seeabove).

Using the iTrack Solo with GarageBandGarageBandisoneofthemostpopularrecordingappsforiOSdevices.Itisausefulcompositionaltoolandusedonitsown,allowsyoutocreatemusicfromtherangeofvirtualinstrumentsitprovides.WithiTrackSolo,youcanaddvocalsandreal-worldinstrumentsaswell.
ToroutetheiTrackSolomicinputintoGarageBandfollowtheprocedurebelow(operatinginstructionsforGarageBandarebeyondthescopeofthisUserGuide,buttheapplicationincludesafullsetofHelpfiles):

Ifyouareusingadifferentrecordingapp,asimilarprocedurewillbenecessary;checktheApp’sHelpfilesforinformation.
Using the iTrack Solo with a Mac or PCYoucanalsouseyouriTrackSoloasananalogueaudioI/O(Input-Output)interfacetoalaptop(orothercomputer).ThiswillletyourecordtracksonyourDAWfromamicrophone,guitar,etc.,andalsoletyouconnectloudspeakerorheadphonemonitoring,soyoucanhearyourworkinprogressthroughanexternalaudiosystem.
Software InstallationYouwillneedtoinstalltheappropriatedriversontoyourlaptop/computerbeforeyoucanyouusetheiTrackSolowithit.(Driversaresmallsoftwareapplicationswhichensurethatyourlaptop/computercommunicatescorrectlyandefficientlywiththeiTrackSolo).
The drivers can be downloaded from www.focusrite.com/downloads. Navigate to the iTrack Solodownloadarea.
Mac OSSelecttheMacdiskimage(*.dmg)versionofthedrivertostartthedownload.Double-clickthefilefromtheDownloads folderand thenrun the installationpackage (*.pkg). Followallon-screeninstructions;aconfirmationwillbegivenwhenthedriverhasbeeninstalledsuccessfully.
YourOSshouldautomaticallyswitchthecomputer’sdefaultaudiooutputstobetheUSBporttowhichtheiTrackSoloisconnected.Toverifythis,gotoSystem Preferences > Sound,andsettheinputandoutputtoiTrack Solo.FormoredetailedsetupoptionsonaMac,openApplications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.

WindowsDouble-click the Windows (*.exe) version to start the download. Save the file to a convenientlocation,andwhenthedownloadhascompleted,double-clickit.Followallon-screeninstructions;aconfirmationwillbegivenwhenthedriverhasbeeninstalledsuccessfully.
Restartyourlaptop/computer,andthenconnecttheiTrackSolotoaUSBportusingthesuppliedcable.
YourOSshouldautomaticallyswitch thecomputer’sdefaultaudiooutputs tobe theUSBport towhichtheiTrackSoloisconnected.Toverifythis:
onWindows7-gotoStart > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Manage Audio Devices andset ‘Default Playback’ and ‘Recording’ to ‘iTrack Solo’.
Connecting your iTrack Solo
IMPORTANT: Before you connect the iTrack Solo to your computer,pleasecompletethesoftwareinstallationaccordingtotheinstructionsabove.Thiswillensurethatthehardwareusesthecorrectdrivers,andwillpreventunexpectedbehaviour.
The iTrack Solo has a single USB 2.0 port (on the rear panel). Once the software installation iscomplete,simplyconnecttheiTrackSolotoyourcomputerusingtheUSBcableprovided.(NotethatiTrackSoloisaUSB2.0device,andthustheUSBconnectionrequiresaUSB2.0+compliantportonyourcomputer.ItwillnotoperatecorrectlywithUSB1.0/1.1ports.)TheiTrackSolowillbepoweredfromthecomputerviatheUSBconnection.
The iTrack Solo cannot be used with an iOS device and a computer at the same time. If this isattempted,theiOSdevicewillassumepriority,andtheiTrackSolowillnolongerbeavailableastheI/OdeviceforthecomputerDAWapplication.
Audio setup in your DAWTheiTrackSoloiscompatiblewithanyWindows-basedDAWthatsupportsASIOorWDMandanyMac-based DAW that uses Core Audio. After installing the driver and connecting the hardware,youcanstartusing the iTrackSolowith theDAWofyourchoice.AbletonLiveLitemayeasilybedownloadedfromwww.ableton.com/live-liteifyoudonotalreadyhaveaDAWapplicationinstalledonyourcomputer.Acardwithanactivationcodeisincludedinthebox.
Operating instructions for Ableton Live Lite are beyond the scope of this User Guide, but theapplicationincludesafullsetofHelpfiles.
Pleasenote-yourDAWmaynotautomaticallyselecttheiTrackSoloasitsdefaultI/Odevice.Inthiscase,youmustmanuallyselect‘iTrack Solo’(or‘Focusrite USB 2.0 driver’)asthedriveronyourDAW’sAudio Setup*page.PleaserefertoyourDAW’sdocumentation(orHelpfiles)ifyouareunsurewheretoselecttheASIO/CoreAudiodriver.ThefollowingexampleshowsthecorrectconfigurationintheAbletonLiveLitePreferencespanel(Macversionshown).

Example of useTheiTrackSoloistheidealinterfaceforaniPadoraDAWapplicationonalaptoporothercomputer.
Atypicalsetofconnectionsisillustratedbelow:
Connecting a microphone / instrumentThissetupillustratesatypicalconfigurationforrecording–eitherintoyouriOSdevice,orbyusingDAWsoftwareonyourMacorPC.Inthiscase,youmightrecordvocalsthroughInput1andguitarthroughInput2 intoyourrecordingapplication,whilemonitoringtheplaybackviaheadphonesorloudspeakers.
The iTrackSolo’s inputsareonthefrontpanel; Input1usesastandard3-pinXLRsocket,and isconfigured to work with microphones of most types; you will probably have a mating XLR maleconnector on the end of your mic cable. Input 2 uses a 2-pole ¼” (6.35 mm) jack socket, and isintendedtoacceptsignalsfromaguitarorbass.
Ifyouareusinga“studio”condenser(capacitor)microphonedesignedonoperateon48Vphantompower,pressthe48Vbutton.Othertypesofmicrophone(includingthecommondynamictype)donotrequirephantompower,andmaysufferdamagedifphantompowerifapplied.Somecheapercondensermicrophonesareabletooperatefromalowerphantompowervoltage–typically15V.Youshouldcheckthemicspectoseeifitissafetooperateitfrom48V;ifnot,obtainasuitableexternalphantompowersupply.

Using Direct MonitoringYouwillfrequentlyheartheterm“latency”usedinconnectionwithdigitalaudiosystems.Inthecaseofthesimplerecordingapplicationdescribedabove,latencywillbethetimeittakesforyourinputsignals to pass through your recording device (laptop or iPad, etc.) and the associated software.Latencycanbeaproblemforaperformerwhowishestorecordwhilemonitoringtheirinputsignals.
TheiTrackSoloisfittedwitha“DirectMonitoring”option,whichovercomesthisproblem.SettingthefrontpanelDIRECT MONITORswitchtoONwillrouteyourinputsignalsdirectlytotheiTrack Solo’s headphone and main monitor outputs. This enables you to hear yourself with zerolatency–i.e.,in“realtime”–alongwiththecomputerplayback.Theinputsignalstoyourcomputerarenotaffectedinanywaybythissetting.
When“DirectMonitoring”issettoON,ensurethatyourrecordingsoftwareisnotsettorouteitsinput(whatyouarecurrentlyrecording)toitsoutput.Ifitis,youwillhearyourself“twice”,withonesignalaudiblydelayedasanecho.
Headphone monitoringConnectapairofstereoheadphonestothefrontpanelheadphonessockettohearbothwhatyouarerecording(yourcurrentinputsignal(s))andanytracksyou’vealreadyrecordedinyourlaptoporiOSdevice.Thepre-recordedtrackswillbeheardinstereo,andthecurrentinputsignalsinmono–centralinthestereoimage.Ifyouareusingboththemicandinstrumentinputs,thetwoinputswillbesummedinmono.
Connecting iTrack Solo to loudspeakersThephono(RCA)outputsontherearpanelcanbeusedtoconnectmonitoringspeakers.Self-poweredmonitors (i.e., typicalcomputerspeakers) incorporate internalamplifiers,andmaybeconnecteddirectly.Larger,passiveloudspeakerswillrequireaseparatestereoamplifier;inthiscase,therearpaneloutputsshouldbeconnectedtotheamplifier’sinputs.

Thelineoutputconnectorsarestandardphono(RCA)sockets.Typicalconsumer(hi-fi)amplifiersandsmallpoweredmonitorswillhaveinputsonphono(RCA)socketsorasingle3.5mm3-polejackplug(intendedfordirectconnectiontoacomputer).Ineithercase,useasuitableconnectingcablewithphonoplugs(RCAjacks)atoneend.
NOTE:Youruntheriskofcreatinganaudiofeedbackloopifloudspeakersareactiveatthesametimeasamicrophone!Werecommendthatyoualwaysturnoff(orturndown)monitoringloudspeakerswhilerecording,anduseheadphoneswhenoverdubbing.
