Chapter 1INTRODUCTION

General InformationThe Kelvin™ TILE is an LED lighting fixture for the film and television production industry offering a number of innovative features:

• Adjustable Intensity

• Adjustable Correlated Color Temperature (CCT)

• Kelvin™ PAINTBOX Remote Control

• DMX Control

• V-Mount Plate for Power Supply or Battery Operation

• Soft, Diffused Output

Measuring Correlated Color Temperature (CCT)The TILE utilizes a unique 6 color LED array that is revolutionary for the Film and Video industry. Current color meters cannot be used to accurately read the correlated color temperature (CCT) of the TILE and other narrow-spectrum light sources.

Color meters in use today are designed for a full spectrum source such as incandescent lights. These meters posses only 3 sensors to measure the light output: red, green, and blue. As such, a 6 color, narrow band light source, such as the TILE may not read correctly.

Gekko Technology has taken great care in ensuring that the CCT of the light emanating from the TILE matches traditional light sources. This allows you to easily place a Kelvin TILE alongside your traditional lighting fixtures.

Chapter 2OPERATION

The Kelvin TILE provides control over the Intensity and CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) directly from the back of the fixture. Many more parameters can be accessed from the Kelvin PAINTBOX or via DMX. All three methods are outlined in this chapter:

• Local Controls, (p. 2-2)

• Kelvin PAINTBOX Control, (p. 2-3)

• DMX Control, (p. 2-15)

Operation ModesThe Kelvin TILE has 3 modes of operation: DMX, Video, and Film. DMX mode allows the TILE to be controlled from the PAINTBOX or a DMX controller. Film and Video modes provide different light tailored to the unique characteristics of these acquisition methods. For example, film stocks have specific biases that are different than video camera electronics. Gekko Technology has calibrated the light to account for these differences.

N O T E You must select the proper mode to ensure correct light output.

Chapter 2Operation

Local Controls

Push the rocker switch up to turn the fixture on. Push the rocker switch down to turn the fixture off. The current operating mode and CCT preset is remembered when the fixture is powered off.

Select the DMX address of the fixture by pushing the thumbwheel buttons. The first fixture should be set to address 001. Since the Kelvin TILE DMX protocol uses 10 channels, the second fixture should be set to address 011, the third fixture set to address 021, etc. See DMX Control (p. 2-15) for more information.

Controls the intensity from 0 (no output) to 10 (full output). This control is inoperable when the Operating Mode is set to DMX.

When the CCT Preset Switch is set to Variable, the CCT can be adjusted between 2200K and 6500K. This control is inoperable when the Operating Mode is set to DMX.

Sets the correlated color temperature (CCT) of the TILE to either 3000K, 5500K, or Variable. This control is inoperable when the Operating Mode is set to DMX.

The operating mode biases the output of the TILE based on the method of acquisition: Film or Video. See Operation Modes (p. 2-1) for more information.

The diagnostic port is used for firmware upgrades and system diagnostics.

DMX ControlKelvin TILE is fully controllable from the 5-pin DMX port on the back of the fixture. There is also a DMX thru connector to daisy-chain fixtures (see TILE DMX Connections, p. 2-4). Keep in mind the following points regarding DMX control:

• Each TILE to be controlled via DMX must have the address set accordingly.

• The first fixture to be controlled should be set to DMX address 001.

• The Kelvin TILE DMX protocol uses 10 channels per fixture so the subsequent fixtures should be offset by 10 as shown in the figure below:.

Warnings and Cautions

N O T E Read, keep, and heed all warnings and cautions.

Risk of Electric shock / Risk of FireDo not open. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not remove cover (or back). No user-serviceable parts inside. Refer servicing to qualified service personnel. To protect against risk of fire caused by overloading of power cables, MAXIMUM 15 may be connected in parallel. Each power source cable supplying maximum 15 should be protected by a circuit breaker or fuses rated 16A/250VAC (15A/250VAC in the USA and Canada). Note that one Kelvin TILE requires 100-240VAC, 50-60 Hz, max. 1A.

Burning InjuriesBe aware of high case temperatures of 60-90°C while and after use of the Kelvin TILE. Don’t touch the metal cases, frames, LEDs to avoid burning injuries.

High Leakage CurrentThe combination of multiple Kelvin TILEs in an installation results in increased levels of leakage current. In order to avoid risk of electric shock due to high leakage current, proper grounding of the installation is required. The amount of leakage current has to be checked and approved in the final product.

Flammable MaterialsKeep flammable materials away from the installation (such as curtains). A lot of energy is transferred into heat. The installation should be such that the amount of air flow required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised. Proper ventilation must be provided.

ESD and LED’sLED components used in Kelvin TILEs are ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) sensitive. To prevent the possibility of destroying LED components do not touch either in operation or while switched off, or use a protective cover in front of the LEDs.

Light OutputDue to high light-output intensity don’t stare directly into the LEDs. Use indirect reflectors or diffusers when exposing the light to human eyes.

Disconnect DeviceWhen the appliance inlets of the individual Kelvin TILEs are not accessible, the socket outlets supplying the rack shall be installed near the equipment and be easily accessible, or a readily accessible general disconnect device shall be incorporated in the fixed wiring. Disconnect device should state 3mm separation in both poles and should include reference to national wiring rules.

This equipment MUST be earthed. In order to protect against risk of electric shock, the installation should be properly grounded. Defeating the purpose of the grounding type plug will expose you to the risk of electric shock.

Power SystemIt is recommended to use a TN-S power distribution system (a power distribution system with a separate neutral and grounding conductor) in order to avoid large ground current loops due to voltage differences in the neutral conductor. The total electrical installation should be protected by an appropriately rated disconnect switch, circuit breakers and Ground Fault Current Interrupters.

The installation shall be done according to the local electrical installation codes. In Europe special attention should be given to EN60364, the standard for electrical installation of buildings. In Germany VDE 0100 should be adhered to. According to clause 2.7.3 from EN 60950-1, the electrical installation has to provide short-circuit backup protection.

Mains CordsThe power cords delivered with this system have special properties for safety. They are not user serviceable. If the power cords are damaged, replace them only with new ones. Never try to repair a power cord.

Battery Powered DeviceThe V-plate option can be used for powering the Kelvin TILE by battery. Use only original chargers. Don’t short the battery. Respect the service and the safety manual of the battery.
