Visual Teaching
When it comes to effective
visual design, there are four principles that
all teachers must abide by.
Consistency
All elements of powerpoint slides must be in harmony visually to send a simple, easy to understand message.
Consistency (Cont.)• It is one of the most important
aspects of visual teaching (in this case powerpoint) because it will help students gain the most understanding out of the presentation.
• By remaining consistent, a presentation’s structure and narrative will be all the more powerful.
Relevance
• All components must contribute to and enhance the message being taught.
• For the study of ancient cultures, a teacher may use images and stories from historic folklore, fairy tales, and mythology.
For example...
This would be considered relevant to the plan... And this would not.

Proportion (Cont.)• All elements of a powerpoint must be
consistent and relevant in size to what is being taught.
• However, there is such a thing as oversizing.
• Examples are too many pictures, too many sub-bullets, and too many slides (think 10 slides for every 20 minutes you’re presenting.)
• Also, if you plan on skipping sections then why have them?
• Keep it simple and to the point.
Unity
• All elements have to work together to make the message clear and precise.
• A great example of unity from the handout is when Ian Jukes suggests introducing ideas separately, in order of importance or chronologically, or interweaving them to emphasize importance.
