CAPTAIN AMeRICA: In what could have been his last start at Benedetti Diamond on May 11, junior RHP Kyle Zimmer dazzled over 7.0 innings. The right-hander struck out 11 and walked only two en route to his fifth win of the season. The La Jolla, Calif., native has been touted as a first round draft pick in this year’s MLB draft. Before the 2012 season started, Zimmer was named a second team All-American in Baseball America’s college preseason poll. The right-hander became the first Don to be named a preseason All-American since Tagg Bozied in 2000. Zimmer was named to the 60-Man Midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List on May 1.

Zimmer had a terrific March, tossing back-to-back compete game shutouts against Hawaii and UCSB. Against the Rainbows, Zimmer stuck out 11 and allowed only three hits en route to his first win of the 2012 season. On March 24, Zimmer blanked the Gauchos, striking out nine and walking only one to propel the Dons to a 2-0 victory. The righty has been equally impressive in April, going at least 7.0 innings in each of his four starts against WCC opponents, going 2-1. Against No. 30 Gonzaga, Zimmer went 8.0 strong innings, striking out 10 and walking only one en route to his fourth victory of the season. Against BYU, the righty pitched 7.0 in-nings allowing just one run, while striking out 10 and walking only two.

Zimmer is 5-3 with a 2.59 ERA this season. Zimmer leads the WCC in shutouts (2), strikeouts (96), and strikeouts per nine innings (10.37). His three complete games rank second, while his 2.59 ERA ranks 8th, and his .226 batting average against ranks 6th. The 6-4, 220-pound righty has shown exceptional control on the mound issuing only 15 walks in 83.1 innings pitched and ranks 14th in the nation with an 96-to-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Zimmer’s 96 punchouts rank 28th in the nation.

JUSTIN’S TIMe: College of San Mateo transfer Justin Maffei had one of his best weeks of the season from May 7-13. The junior went 6-for-13 (.462) with four runs and six RBI. Maffei added three doubles, one triple, and one home run, racking up 14 total bases in four games. In addition the speedster also stole three bases to increase his WCC lead to 24. The CF ranks first on the team in hits (63), runs (45), total bases (90), on-base pct. (.460), hit by pitch (17), and steals (24). In addition, Maffei ranks 3rd in walks (34), on-base pct. (.460), and runs scored (45), 7th in total bases (90), and 8th in hits (63) in the WCC. Justin ranks 9th all-time in single season steals in Dons’ history ahead of Jonnie Knoble (23 in 2007)

USF’s 2.81 walks allowed per nine innings ranks 25th in the country, while its 1.20 WHIP ranks 23rd. The Dons’ Friday and Sunday starters rank 8th and 6th in the entire conference in ERA (Bobb 2.38, Zimmer 2.59). SACRIFICe: Second baseman Jason Mahood’s 18 sacrifice bunts rank sixth in the entire nation. Mahood came alive in the three-game series against LMU from April 13-15, racking up seven RBIs and going 5-for-13 (.385). Mahood’s 28 RBIs rank second on the team. The second baseman’s defense has been stellar once again, as the junior owns a .991 fielding percentage.

SeeING CLeARLY: Adam Clear has been one of the most consistent bats for the Dons. Clear’s second 10-game hitting streak this season came to an end with an 0-for-3 day at the plate on April 24 against UC Davis. Clear’s previous 10-game streak was snapped after an 0-for-3 day on March 15 in the series opener against Hawaii. During the most recent streak, Clear had four multi-hit games, including two three-hit efforts. The senior shortstop is third on the team with a .305 batting average and ranks second with 13 doubles.

FLYIN HAWAIIN: Redshirt freshman Sheldon Lee has turned in an incredible first season on The Hilltop. The left-handed reliever leads the team with a 1.50 ERA in 24.0 innings pitched. Lee, from Honolulu, Hawaii, owns a .198 batting average against and a 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio at 20-to-10. In his last nine appearances, Lee has allowed only one earned run. During the 13.2-inning stretch, the lefty has lowered his ERA 1.11 points (from 2.61 to 1.50), including a season-high 3.0 inning scoreless relief effort against Pacific on May 8.

HINKLe’S HeLP: Junior reliever Haden Hinkle has been one of the most dominant right-handed arms out of the bullpen for USF this year. Hinkle’s .181 batting average against rank first on the entire staff for a right-hander (26 hits in 38.0 innings pitched). The righty from Madera, CA is 2-1 on the season in 23 appearances.

CHAVeZ CRUSHeS: Senior DH/C Matt Chavez leads the team with six long flys on the season, which is also tied for third in the WCC. In his final year on The Hilltop, the designated hitter has 19 RBIs (3rd on the team). 11 of Chavez’s 28 hits this season have gone for extra bases.

FINe FReSHMAN: Freshman DH Brendan Hendriks has performed well for the Dons in his first go around, hitting .307 (2nd on the team) with an impressive .362 on-base percentage. The Canadian has started in 28 games this season primarily as the designated hitter against right-handed pitchers, but has also played third base, first base, and left field as well.

SWeePING UP: The Dons put together a 16-5 WCC record and won the conference last year due in large part to four separate three-game series sweeps of their WCC rivals, including Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, and Portland. So far this season, USF has swept three three-game series (vs. Missouri, then-No. 30 Gonzaga, and Santa Clara).

Morioka has started in 48 of the Dons’ 52 games this season all behind the plate and is San Francisco’s fifth-leading hitter with a .264 batting average.
