Exciting news for caregivers from the University of South Florida Health Caregiver’s Lab. Participants of a caregiver study are providing valuable information in the link between sleep and heart disease, while caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia in the home. Through questionnaires, non-drug treatments and a night monitoring system, primary caregivers of those with dementia are benefiting from the in home study. Space is still available to participate. To qualify, call 813 974 1827. People with dementia often get up at night, turning on appliances, opening doors, even wandering away. Lack of sleep is a common problem for the 15 million caregivers who live with a dementia patient. Chronic stress by itself is a risk factor for high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart attacks and stroke. "But there are other things at play," said Meredeth Rowe, a professor at the USF College of Nursing. "That's why we are trying to untangle this caregiver stress. Stress alone doesn't have this effect. We're looking at vigilance and sleep." Rowe is the lead investigator on a federally funded study of sleep loss in caregivers. We are currently recruiting caregivers for an NIH-funded study that tests interventions intended to improve dementia caregiver sleep and overall health. Our researchers have over 20 years of NIH-funded research that focuses specifically on helping caregivers of persons with dementia. Our goal in this study is to test interventions that improve the sleep and overall health of dementia caregivers. "Caregivers don't have to leave home or their loved one in order to participate," she said. "We want to know if the monitoring system improves (caregiver) sleep, and if so, if that improves their biomarkers for heart disease." Meredeth Rowe RN, PhD is the study principal investigator and has had many funded caregivers studies from National Institutes of Health and the Veterans Administration. Only through the generosity of professionals who assist in referring caregivers to the study, and the caregivers who volunteer, will we be able to develop the most effective and useful interventions for future caregivers. For information on the caregiver study, call (813) 974-1827 or email research project manager, Margaret Gross-King, [email protected]. The USF team is placing a monitoring system in participants' homes to alert them whenever the patient gets out of bed. They are seeking caregivers willing to use the CareAlert system, provide feedback and answer periodic questionnaires about coping. The 2014 Doctors Braun Award Perhaps Doctors Bea and Dick Braun
Were not well known all over town But to we members of the Enrichment
Centers Especially to those to whom they were
mentors And to their Board of Directors cohorts
Their names invoke continuing fond thoughts
So we honored them with this plaque Which assists us as we keep track
Of others who have done more than their share
Usually with hardly any fanfare When those here are gone, one and all
The name Jackie Hyman will shine from the wall!
Congratulations Jackie Hyman~ 2014 Volunteer of the Year!

The other day I was in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county and someone asked me a rhetorical question: Why didn't we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up? I replied that I had a drug problem when I was young: I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather. I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me. I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profanity. I was drug out to pull weeds in mom's garden and flower beds. I was drug to the homes of neighbors to help mow the yard, repair the clothesline, and if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, my dad would have drug me back to the woodshed. Those drugs are still in my veins and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, or think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin, and if today's children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place. God bless the parents who drugged us. Submitted by email!
