Parts of a Resume

Contact Information• Include your full name, complete address, telephone

number, and e-mail address.• All words should be spelled out, including “Road”• Phone Number format is: (XXX) XXX-XXXX• E-mail addresses should be professional.

Objective• State your employment/career goals in clear and concise

statements. Should be not more than two sentences. • Answers the question “What can you do for the

employer?”

Parts of a Resume

Education• List the degree you are currently pursuing, expected graduation

date, and grade point average. • Schools should be listed in reverse chronological order. List current

education first and work backwards.

Work Experience• List in reverse chronological order: your job title, employer,

location (city and state), work performed, and dates. Use action verbs to describe your work. Highlight accomplishments and any skills developed. Whenever possible, quantify what you did (Example: led six-member team, achieved $ in quarterly sales). Avoid the term “Responsibilities or Duties” — instead use action words that emphasize results.

• Do not write job descriptions! List achievements that you earned.

Honors and Activities• List academic honors or other awards you have

received. Also list school organizations (list those related to your career field first) or volunteer community groups, including any leadership positions and accomplishments.

• If you are involved in any school club list these in this section, your position in the group, and the years/months you were involved.

• Involved in sports in school? Include these here. List similarly as you would a club.

Skills• List computer and other technical skills (begin with

those related to the job you desire), operational knowledge of special equipment, and languages. Include any additional special skills you have that may interest an employer.

• List any skills you have gained from school and from jobs held outside of school.

References• It is generally acceptable to put “References Available

Upon Request.” This is considered professional.

How long should my Resume be?• Generally, resumes are supposed to be as long as

it needs to be to detail all of your experience. • For example: A person who has been working for

25 years will have a longer resume than a person who has been working for 2 years.

• Long resumes are not always good…they take a long time to read.

• A ONE PAGE resume is best!!! It is Short, Sweet, and Simple!!!

Resume Rules:• Professional look and feel, good visual appeal,

white space for readability • Page Length – 1 to 2 pages • Font – Tahoma, Arial, Times New Roman, or

Verdana • Font Size – 10 to 12 points • Font Styles – bold, italics, and capitalization to

highlight key areas • Paper Color – white, light gray or ivory (Use heavy

weighted paper)• Proofread and Spell Check • Place your name and a page number on the top of

all subsequent pages of your resume
