iClicker Classic version 7.17 for Spring 2018 In December of 2017, the iClicker Classic software updated to version 7.17. It is recommended that all Instructors use an iClicker version of 7.14 or higher. If the current version that is being used is prior to 7.14, please download the most current iClicker version from CSU’s iClicker download page.

Update the iClicker Software If the current iClicker version that is being used is later than version 7.14, it is recommended the software be updated to the most current version, 7.17, which can be done within the iClicker Classic software.

Backup Classes data iClicker will not overwrite any of the class data or settings that are set within the software, but it is recommended to create a copy of the Classes folder as a backup. Navigate to the folder containing the iClicker software, create a copy of the Classes folder and save this folder in a new location on a computer or a USB drive. Note: For the iClicker software to update, the software may not be located on a Network Drive. If the software is on a Network drive, move the iClicker folder to a location drive before updating. To update an iClicker version that is 7.14 or later, open the iClicker software, navigate to the Help menu and select Check for Update. The iClicker software will verify there is a new version, and ask to update. Click on the Update button to update the software to the most current version.

For any questions updating the iClicker Classic software, please contact [email protected]

Sync iClicker Classic Course to Canvas Course After creating a course in iClicker, the course must be synced with the appropriate course in Canvas.

To sync an iClicker course with a Canvas course;

1. Open iClicker and select the course name in the Select a Course window. When the correct course is selected, click on the Settings button.

2. In the Course Settings window, click on the Gradebook tab, then click on the Select Course button.

3. The Canvas login page will populate in a

new window. Enter in your eName and ePassword and then click Login to log in to CSU’s Canvas system. Note: Users may have to scroll down to see the Login button

a. On the bottom left of the

window, there is a checkbox next to “Automatically log me in to my LMS”. When this box is checked, any time the roster or grades are synced, your eName and ePassword will not have to be entered. With this box unchecked, every time the roster or grades are synced, your eName and ePassword will have to be provided.

4. Canvas will ask for verification to allow iClicker access to the Canvas account. Click on the Authorize button to allow iClicker access to Canvas.

5. Canvas will populate a list of all Canvas courses that you are enrolled in as an Instructor. Scroll through the list to select the appropriate course.

Note: Please read the following options before selecting the appropriate course.

a. Selecting a non-Cross-Listed course. When the list of courses populates, users will see

two options for an uncross-listed course, which will look similar to the following;

It is recommended that users select the top option (shorter name) for the course.

b. Selecting a Cross-Listed course. For cross-listed courses, iClicker will list out each section individually, as well as the entire cross-listed course.

In the example above, Option 1 will display the entire cross-listed roster (Sections 001 & 005) Option 2 will only display the roster for section 001 Option 3 will only display the roster for section 005.

Note: Typically, Instructors will want the entire roster (option 1), but if the course is being co-taught and an Instructor is only lecturing one of the sections, then they are able to just have the roster of the section they are teaching, populate within iClicker.

Sync a Canvas Roster When a course is created in iClicker, the roster from the Canvas course must be synced to the appropriate course in iClicker.

1. Open iClicker, select a course and then click on the Open Gradebook button.

2. The iClicker gradebook will open, showing a blank gradebook. Click on the Sync Roster on the

top of the window.

3. iClicker will connect to Canvas and Sync the current Canvas roster into iClicker.

4. When the Roster sync is complete, a

notification will populate saying the roster was downloaded successfully.

Page 12: Using iClickers in Canvas

5. The iClicker gradebook will display all students who are enrolled in the course.

a. If a student’s name appears in Red, that means the student has not registered their iClicker in Canvas.

Note: If every name in the gradebook is red, this means a polling session has not been run for this course. To get a current list of registered students, run a polling session in class to get student responses. After the polling session has been closed, open the iClicker gradebook and then click on the Sync Roster button to get a current list students and registrations.

b. If a student’s name is in Blue, the student has registered their iClicker.

c. The alphanumeric text (########) that is displayed in red is the Clicker ID for an iClicker that has been used in an iClicker session, but hasn’t been registered within Canvas. Typically, for every Red student name, there will be a corresponding red clicker ID.

Note: It is recommended that Instructors occasionally sync the Roster in the iClicker gradebook until all students have registered their iClicker’s within Canvas. This will ensure the current student roster and iClicker remote registrations displayed in the iClicker gradebook are accurate with the roster and iClicker registrations in Canvas.

Sync Grades with Canvas After an iClicker session has been completed, the scores may be uploaded into Canvas from the iClicker software. iClicker will create a new column for the scores within Canvas, based on how the sync options are selected when the scores are synced into Canvas. The new columns will default to being placed at the bottom of the assignment group that is listed at the top of the Assignments Index page.

Note: It is recommended to re-sync the roster within iClicker occasionally to ensure the most current roster and iClicker registrations are pulled from Canvas.

1. From the main iClicker window, select the course and then click on the Open Gradebook button.

Page 14: Using iClickers in Canvas

Using iClicker’s with Canvas – Spring 2018 © Technology Training Center Colorado State University 14

2. From the iClicker gradebook, click Sync Scores.

3. Canvas will upload the scores of any students in Blue.

a. Red names indicate the student has not registered their iClicker in Canvas. Even though the iClicker is unregistered, iClicker is still receiving and storing all data from the iClicker remotes that are being used in the classroom. When the student registers their iClicker, all data associated with the iClicker remote will be tied to the student.

b. Ab means the student did not use their iClicker during an iClicker polling session. Any student that has an Ab will receive a zero for that session.

4. On the Upload Scores to LMS window, all of

the sessions that have data within iClicker will be shown. Individual sessions can be selected by clicking in the checkbox next to a session, or all sessions may be selected by clicking on the Select All button on the bottom left. When the sessions to be uploaded have been selected, click the Next button. Note: If all of the sessions are being uploaded into a single Total column (iClicker calls this the Aggregate Total), every session must be selected.

Page 15: Using iClickers in Canvas

Using iClicker’s with Canvas – Spring 2018 © Technology Training Center Colorado State University 15

5. The next screen will give options on how to upload the scores into Canvas.

a. Selected Session(s) options i. Each session is a separate entry – this will create a column for each session that

has been selected within iClicker. ii. Aggregate sessions together as a single entry – this will import the total points

into a single column for all of the selected sessions from the Upload Scores to LMS Window. NOTE: This will create a column called Total. This column name must not be changed in order for all future uploads to be uploaded into this column. NOTE: Always make sure all of the columns, or only the columns that are to be uploaded as a total into Canvas, are selected.

b. Points Uploaded options – these are based on the settings that have been selected within the iClicker software on the Scoring Tab.

i. Total Points – this will upload the total (Performance + Participation) points into a column

ii. Performance points only – this will upload only the points based on performance. These are set up from settings in iClicker

iii. Participation points only – this will upload only the points based on participation. These are set up from settings in iClicker

iv. Both performance points and participation points as separate entries – this will create 2 columns within Canvas, one called Total_PF or Session #_ PF (performance points), one called Total_PR or Session#_PR (participation points) and upload the corresponding points into their respective columns

Page 16: Using iClickers in Canvas

6. When the selections have been made, click the Upload button on the bottom of the window.

7. A window will appear showing iClicker is uploading the scores into Canvas.

8. When all of the scores have been uploaded, iClicker will populate a window saying all scores

were uploaded successfully. Click the Close button to continue.

Verify iClicker scores in Canvas After iClicker scores have been synced into Canvas, it is best to log into Canvas to verify the Assignments have been created and uploaded corrected. If needed, the uploaded Assignments may be moved into the appropriate Assignment Group. Note: For this example, scores were synced by each session as a separate entry and as Total Points. Depending on how the scores were synced, there may be more, or less, columns than this example.

1. Log in to Canvas at canvas.colostate.edu 2. Enter your eName and ePassword 3. Select the course that the scores were synced into by clicking on the Courses link and selecting

the appropriate course.

4. Click on Grades on the left hand side of the screen.

Page 19: Using iClickers in Canvas

5. By default, iClicker will create a new column for each session in Canvas. These columns will be placed at the bottom of the assignment group that is listed first on the Assignments Index page. The columns in the gradebook will appear based on the organization of the assignments in the Assignment group.

NOTE: To move the new columns into a different assignment group, the assignments will have to be manually reordered into the correct assignment group after syncing scores.

Student iClicker Frequency For an iClicker to be used in a classroom, the iClicker frequency must be set to the frequency code that is specific to the classroom where the iClicker is being used. If a room is set up to user iClickers, there should be a sign hanging in the classroom indicating the frequency code for that room. If there aren’t any signs indicating the frequency code, please contact Classroom Support at (970) 491-5920 or email Allen Sneesby. Follow this link for instructions on how to set the frequency code on an iClicker remote.
