Think for a moment about your English high school classes . . .
What did I like about them?
What didn´t I like about them?
Did you ever see any of these symptoms in your English classroom?
What was your class like?
OR
Think about these questions:When you were at school...
...did you have a mobile phone?
... did you have a notebook?
...did you have an iPod, mp4 player, iPad?… were any of them connected
to the internet?

Our students have changed radically. Today’s students areno longer the people our educational system was designedto teach. ..
It is now clear that as a result of this ubiquitous environment [technology] and the sheer volume of theirinteraction with it, today´s students think and processinformation fundamentally differently fromtheir predecessors.
It´s very serious, because the single biggest problem facingEducation today is that our Digital Immigrant instructors, who speak an outdated language (that of the pre-digital age), are struggling to teach a population that speaks anentirely new language.
Today´s teachers have to learn to communicate in the language and style of their students.

TODAY´S STUDENTS
Are we teaching
in the same way
we have always done?
Can we continue
teaching in the same
way as we were
taught even though
many changes have
occured?

SO … Shouldn´t we then Rethink Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century…?
…even if you are the most engaging old-style teacher in the world, you are not going to capture most of our students’ attention the old way. “Their short attention spans,” as one professor put it, “are [only] for the old ways of learning.” They certainly don’t have short attention spans for their games, movies, music, or Internet surfing. More and more, they just don’t tolerate the old ways—and they are enraged we are not doing better by them. So we have to find how to present our curricula in ways that engage our students— not just to create new “lesson Plans”, not even just to put the curriculum online.

So the integration of ICT in our daily teaching is not
an option but a must if we want to get to our
students.Digital Native

We need to get our students´ attention,
we need to ENGAGE them
The Education authorities have already started to provide the tools for the change to take place…

ALFABETIZACIÓN DIGITAL
● Los centros incorporan las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación como herramienta educativa en la enseñanza-aprendizaje
● No se trata de aprender informática, sino usar la informática para aprender.

As TEACHERS, we want…
to engage students, to be relevant in their foreign language learning
experienceTHEN
WE need to listen to them,
pay attention to their livesand to the fact that technology is part of them
SOWe need to use the right tools in teaching
to meet our students´expectations, engage them, remain relevant for them
They feel comfortable using ICT TOOLS
- As TEACHERS this implies that we will have to redefine our role, our classes and our teaching.- It requires learning how to teach a foreign language through such ICT tools: how to use them, how they work…But what is teaching if not constant learning?- Education has always changed in order to improve the process of teaching and learning. Changes are not to be seen as negative but a positive path towards improvement. Watch the video.

ICT and Foreign Language Learning?
What do ICTs bring to the foreign language classroom?

ICT in the Teaching and Learning of English
ICT connects the class to the outside world
ICT does not replace what we normally do but
enhances it
ICT is not here
to replace any
teacher but to
help them
As teachers we
should take
advantage of what
the net has to offer
ICT provides learning
opportunities to students
So why not bring together TECHNOLOGY
and the TEACHING and LEARNING of
FOREIGN LANGUAGES?
Technology dominates our students´ lives: cell phones, ipods, videocamaras, text messages,
internet, digital camaras, videoconferences, blogs, chats, laptops, social networks, emails…
It helps students to cope with their different learning rhythms and styles.
It promotes autonomous learning
ADVANTAGES OF
INTEGRATING ICT IN OUR TEACHING
Students participate, collaborate more. They are more active
Students´ work is of better quality
It increases creativity
It helps the use of authentic material
It creates learning communities
It promotes cooperative learning
Results are the same or better than without using ICT
It involves a deep reflection on our teaching and the improvement of
our teaching

WEB 2.0Dynamic webpagesInteractionSocial networks (facebook) Collaboration (wikis, blogs)Subscriptions, labelsMicroblogging (twitter)

WHERE WE ARE!
Web 3.0 provides a better efficient searching of the web using the semantics of the content in the pages. That means the search engines work not with the keywords we use to search, but with the meaning of the search query we gave. So the main and most important feature of Web 3.0 is Semantic Web. I think you have got a rough idea about what I am talking about. It will be clearer if you see the example below.Imagine I am going to Texas. And I want to know about the hotels, tourists spots etc there. In the present condition if I search the term ‘I am going to Texas’, I get the results page showing the websites containing the keywords I searched, but not useful for me. But in Semantic Web the search engine understands the semantics, that is the meaning of the search query and give results based on the semantics of the query. I think that might be more useful for me.
The Future
The Learning Potential of
Web 2.0
What does web 2.0 have to offer teachers? There are a number of ways web 2.0 have enhanced the learning potential of the web.
Web 2.0 enables:• Socialisation - Through socialisation our students can use the language and skills they are learning to build networks and develop relationships with real people.• Collaboration - They can work together with others to construct and share real knowledge.• Creativity - They can create genuine products, in a wide range and combination of media to high standards, that will have a real audience.• Authenticity - The tasks and activities they do and the people they communicate with to do them are real and motivating.• Sharing - They can share what they create and learn from each other.
