Why use Social Media? It’s free. (Free is a good thing, right?)

It’s fast. (You can connect instantly with people, and you can do it from your computer or mobile phone.)

It’s a way to differentiate yourself from other job hunters (stand out in a crowd rather than getting lost in a crowd).

Show future employers you know how to use social media tools and that you keep up with the latest technology trends.

Most importantly, it could help you land your next job.

Page 10: Using Social Media To Land A Job 1.12.10

Facebook

It’s a way to connect or reconnect with friends, classmates, former co-workers.

You can send direct messages to people through Facebook.

Not as professional as LinkedIn, but it’s another way to connect with people.

Tips on using Facebook to land a job (from Ehow

site): You can modify your profile so that it reads like a resume. List

your education, former employers, and volunteer organizations you have worked for.

Remove all your personal photos and replace them with ones that highlight your accomplishments. Upload photos of yourself volunteering will also lend to your credibility and character. Add concise captions to all your photographs.

Read over your Facebook profile to check for spelling errors. Expect that the employer of the job you want will be reading your profile. You want your profile to highlight your assets and project an accurate representation of yourself. Your Facebook profile should be professional, informative, and well-written to optimize the chances of getting the job you want.

Some other suggestions for using Facebook

You can find Facebook groups that may be helpful in your job search. For example, CNN Money has a Hired Facebook page, which has job search tips and career related information (http://www.facebook.com/urhired).

Write a short description about the type of job you’re looking for on your Facebook wall.

Post updates about your job search. (Landed an interview with Aramark today. Looking for a contact at United Way. Send me a message if you know someone who works there. Preparing for job interview at Pfizer.)

Be careful about what type of photos you’re tagged in, especially if they’re unprofessional. You can untag yourself from these photos.

Page 13: Using Social Media To Land A Job 1.12.10

LinkedIn It’s a professional social media tool to connect

with recruiters, colleagues, classmates, former co-workers and friends.

You can research organizations. You can research people who work within various

organizations. You can search for jobs. You can send direct messages to people on

Linked In. You can now link your LinkedIn account and

Twitter.

Page 14: Using Social Media To Land A Job 1.12.10

YouTube

You can create a professional video resume and upload it on You Tube, Facebook, Twitter.

Recruittube.com is another site where you can upload your resume, professional photo or video resume for free.

The goal with video resumes (and other social media tools) is to create more of a Web presence for yourself. You can Google yourself and see what pops up in the search engine.

What is Twitter used for?

Sharing information – everything from what a person is doing to links to articles about current events and trends, companies, sports, celebrities, etc.

Businesses use it to market their products, advertise sales, share news and events, and connect directly with customers. Some companies like Comcast and Best Buy have employees using Twitter for customer service.

Facts about Twitter

You can direct message anyone who is following you. (Only 140 characters allowed in your direct message.)

You can click on the reply button and respond to anyone you follow on Twitter. There is a reply button to the right of every tweet you receive. (Only 140 characters in your reply.)

You can retweet (forward) anything you receive via Twitter. There is a retweet button to the right of every tweet you receive.

One important note. Your tweets can be seen by anyone so think before you send a tweet.

If you use Twitter, you need

to know about these sites:

http://tinyurl.com/ shortens long Web site addresses)

http://bit.ly/ (another URL shortening site) http://www.techrecap.com/2010/01/10-url-

shortening-services-to-shrink.html (article with other URL shortening sites)

Twitter Etiquette

Be helpful. Be yourself. It’s better to send more time

promoting others rather than yourself. The 80/20 rule applies here.

Quality is better than quantity.

Page 24: Using Social Media To Land A Job 1.12.10

After you create your Twitter account...

Dive right in and start following people and see what people are talking about in the Twittersphere. (There’s lots of lingo to learn on Twitter.)

It’s best to get a sense of what is being discussed before replying to tweets or sending them yourself.
