Introduction The ACM WordPress Theme provides a look-and-feel that’s similar to the look of the ACM main website,

https://www.acm.org . It is available for download at:

http://campus.acm.org/public/infodir/wordpress.cfm

Occasionally, there will be updates to the Theme, and the site administrator will be prompted to install them through the WordPress dashboard. As of May 15, 2018 the current version is 1.3.

Installing Save the downloadable to a local drive. Logged in to your WordPress install as administrator, follow these steps:

1. From your Dashboard, hover over “Appearance”, “Themes”, and click on “Themes”, “Add New”, and “Upload Theme”.

2. “Choose a File” and navigate to your local drive to the acm.zip file you saved. Click “Install

Now”.

3. Look for a message that the theme has been installed successfully, and click to activate:

4. You’ll see the ACM Theme and you will be prompted to install a number of recommended

plugins. Click on “Begin installing plugins”.

5. Choose “Install” from the drop-down, check the box at the top, and click “Apply”. This may take

a few minutes. You’ll get a status report and a message once all plugins have been installed.

Customizing

Type of Site The Theme supports customization by three types of sites: Conferences, SIGs, and Chapters.

Note: Skip this section if your site does not fall within these three types. Jump to Appendix 3 for information on setting up your site menus. You can set up and add items to menus through the “Appearance”, “Menus”, “Edit Menus” interface, following the standard WordPress functionality for menu setup. Please reference the “WordPress Menu User Guide”, at https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Menu_User_Guide .

In “Dashboard”, click on “Home” and scroll to find the “Type of site” drop-down; select your site type

from the three options.

The result of this action will be to pre-set site menu links; and if your site is of type

“Conference” or “SIG”, you have the option to receive automated “Open ToCs” from

the ACM Digital Library.

Type SIG, Conference: Open ToCs

You will see this Open ToC entry in the Dashboard:

Open ToCs: To enquire about activating this option, please contact [email protected], with

subject line, “Attn: H.Kanthou, Open ToCs Request”. Provide your site domain in

your email, along with the conference proceedings ToCs you would like to receive.

Menus The Theme includes three menus: Primary Menu, Secondary Menu, and Top Small. In addition, there is

a footer with the ability to add custom content (including images for logos), and the default WordPress

navigation in the right rail.

Menus are managed through the Dashboard, in this path: “Appearance”, “Menus”; the tab “Manage

Locations” provides an overview.

You can modify, add, or remove items from all menus, through the “Appearance”, “Menus”, “Edit

Menus” interface, following the standard WordPress functionality for menu setup. Please reference the

“WordPress Menu User Guide”, at https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Menu_User_Guide .

Type: SIG

Primary Menu

The pre-configured Primary Menu will appear here:

You can see a screen shot of the default SIG Primary Menu in Appendix 1.

The Secondary Menu will appear here:

The Secondary Menu includes site search, integrated into the WordPress functionality. Just like with the

Primary Menu, you can modify this menu through “Appearance”, “Menus”, “Edit Menus”. A view of the

default SIG Secondary Menu appears in Appendix 1.

Top Small

In the upper-right corner is navigation that links to the ACM main site and to the ACM Digital Library.

You may edit this menu, as with the other two menus, through “Appearance”, “Menus”, “Edit Menus”.

A view of the SIG Top Small menu appears in Appendix 1..

ACM Theme Configuration

Number of Posts

The ACM Theme displays posts in a “boxed view” on the main section landing pages – the post category

pages. You can set the number of posts to display on these pages through “Dashboard”, “ACM Theme

Configuration”, in the “Number of posts to display” section. Be sure to click “Save” (the button to save

will be all the way to the right, off-screen in the image below).

The “boxed view” will display posts chronologically, with the newest in the upper-left corner and the

oldest in the lower-right. The right rail (i.e., rightmost third column of the page) will include the

WordPress Widgets menu.

For more information on WordPress Posts and Categories, please reference “Posts Category Screen”,

https://codex.wordpress.org/Posts_Categories_Screen .

It’s good practice to group your posts into categories. You can add categories through the “Dashboard”,

“Posts”, “Categories” menu. It makes sense to set up categories to match your Primary Menu sections,

for example.

Social Networks By default, the following links appear in the site footer, set to the “Official ACM” links. You can modify

the links to point to your Social Media, leaving the default if your group does not have any specific links

across any of these. The email should be pointing to your contact email.
