Thinkify Application Note Using the TR-65 RFID Module's Asynchronous Serial Ports with External 5V Power Overview The Thinkify TR-65 RFID Reader module is a flexible, low-cost Gen2 RFID Reader-Writer. It supports three different communication interfaces; USB configured as a CDC device (communication device class), asynchronous serial at RS232 voltage levels and asynchronous serial at TTL voltage levels (on one of two available ports). When using the asynchronous serial interface in either RS232 or TTL mode, the TR-65 Requires an external 5V supply. (+5V +/- 10% 600mA), and the USB interface must be disconnected. When the USB communication is used, the device is powered from the host USB port. This application note describes how to configure the TR-65 RFID module for operation with external power to use either the RS232 or TTL Ports. Copyright 2010 Thinkify LLC. All Rights Reserved. Overview

The Thinkify TR-65 RFID Reader module is a flexible, low-cost Gen2 RFID Reader-Writer.

Both ports have the same pin configuration, shown in the figures below with the board edge-on.

Pins are defined in the tables below.

Data is sent / received w/RS232 or TTL signaling levels depending upon whether Pin 7 is grounded. Grounding Pin 7 causes TTL signaling to be used on the active port. Ungrounding Pin 7 causes the active port to use RS232 signaling levels.

Note: If you are communicating with a PC, use RS232 Signaling levels.

Important Notes:

1: USB must NOT be hooked up when running over the RS232 interface.

2: Bootloader functionality only works over the USB interface.

3: Mating connectors for the Asynchronous Serial Ports and the GPIO port are available from Thinkify.
