Tearing down the walls of your classroom

In my classes I realized I need to Repeat, Repeat, Repeat, Repeat, Repeat, Repeat, Repeat, Repeat, Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

Content before the students start to internalize it.

• We need see or hear something 3-6 times before we can recognize it and 6-12 times before we learn it.

• Only remember 50% of what we learn each day• Recognition vs. Recall

•Learning requires continual reinforcement. Students know this intuitively.

• They have been audio taping lectures for years.

•Now with video they not only get to hear the content but see it as well.

•Our goal is to help them form long term memories of the important concepts within the class.

Recognition and Recall

A Picture is worth a thousand words.

Why Video?

Page 6: Using Video to Enhance the Online, Traditional and Hybrid Classroom

Why Video?

• Gives the student a chance to see and hear the instructor rather than just reading the material.

• More effective at teaching complex topics.

• Frees the instructor up to move on to fresh topics rather than repeating the same ones over and over.

We are in our seventh year of using video. These are 6 types of videos we commonly use.

• Desktop Reminders

• Targeted Videos

• General Lecture and Lab presentations

• Study Sessions

• Guest lecturers

• Email answers and reminders

Our Basic Design Sequence

• We review the course teaching materials to decide where the videos will have the most impact.

• We shoot, edit, and render the videos.

• Then we integrate the video course teaching materials.

»OR

• Tape a traditional lecture or lab covering the same content

How do you get the video content to the student?

• Save the files on CD or DVD

– Discs can be purchased at the bookstore or included with your textbook bundles

– Discs can be placed on reserve in the library

• Files can be imbedded on or in your own web page

– File size and download speeds are a concern here

– Students with dial-up connections will be limited

How do you get the video content to the student?

• Files can be Loaded on a streaming server

– YouTube

– Video files need to be shorter than 15mins and less than 2 GB

– You can password protect your site so only your students will

be able to view content but YouTube retains rites
