Convergence - Evaluation
Convergence delivers stronger local journalism by sharing newsgathering and reporting
resources. By becoming the preferred local provider of news and information, and increasing audience share,convergence drives revenue growth. With the Internet, every Media General market is a convergence market. In six
markets, Media General has implemented convergence across three media platforms.
Tampa, Fla., is its most advanced convergence market, the home of The Tampa Tribune, WFLA-TV, TBO.com and
beginning in 2005, CENTRO Grupo De Comunicacin. Sharing tips, leads, information and background knowledge has
become routine at the Tampa News Center, the worlds first facility built for multimedia production. Convergence
produces a true multimedia enterprise delivering news and information wherever and however people want it.
Basically, the media convergence module being developed at Texas State University-San Marcos
will complement the print edition of the publication in both coverage and distribution . Theelectronic version of the publication will provide students knowledge, skills and experience to build successful
communication careers in a global media marketplace. The Stars Internet edition will expand the publications coverage
of campus news events by publishing stories on the Web that were left out of the printed version of the paper because of
space restrictions.
Distribution will be enhanced in two ways. First, the World Wide Web will allow access to Starmaterial from anywhere
in the world. The convergence will expand the formatting ofUniversity Starstory presentations by showing
rather than just telling readers of news and information affecting the university and San Marcos through
multimedia and slide show links. Additionally, readers of the site will have the opportunity to become involved withthe campus by voicing their opinions regarding respective stories through blogs.
University Staraccount executives will also benefit from convergence by gaining valuable experience selling
for print and electronic media devices. Thus, students in the advertising sequence will have an
understanding and the necessary skills upon graduation to be more in demand and

Convergence - Leadership
The convergence outlet will give students enrolled in the various NewMedia classes the opportunity to apply the skills learned in the classroom
in an income generating environment.
Skills learned in the classroom and refined in the convergence studio will
involve video editing and Web design. Both skills will be fine tuned in a
laboratory environment, where students will be producing news andinformation programming, which will be broadcast over the Stars Internet
site.
The work created in the convergence environment will become part of a
students portfolio and audition DVD making that person more trained
with the technology to meet the challenges and demands of working in the
21st century communication industry.
