USU Facilities is pleased to announce Brian Daines as the Employee of the Month for September 2014. Brian has worked for Facilities Landscape, Operations & Maintenance since 1996. Before coming to Facilities he worked for White Pine and Tony’s Grove Nursery’s, and was also part owner of the Garden Gateway Nursery for several years. Rob Reeder, Director of LOAM, has said, “Brian is a real asset to the LOAM department. He is responsible for creating all of the beautiful annual flower gardens found throughout campus. He designs these works of art, and along with his crew, he plants and cultivates these gardens. One day, a couple of years ago, Brian observed me taking notes on one of his gardens. When he asked what I was doing, I told Brian that I was going to mimic this beautiful garden at my house. He responded, “yours will never look that good!” Brian has a true gift for creating an aesthetically pleasing campus. Thank you, Brian, for a job well done.” Eric Hale, Brian’s co- worker, has said, “Imagine a guy who, for eighteen years, has come in to work almost every weekend to check on his plants, making sure they are receiving the correct amount of light and water. Brian is that guy. The hours he works are almost like those of a dairy farmer! He works late in the winter and early in the springtime, planting and cultivating seeds, and still makes time to help us deal with the snow. I appreciate Brian teaching us and getting plants ready for our areas. He is excited and passionate about his work, doing research and always trying to be more efficient. Not only is he a great employee, but he is a good person.” Brian was born and raised in Hyde Park and is the youngest Employee of the Month Brian Daines — LOAM September 2014, Volume 332 USU Facilities, Logan, Utah Brian Daines of six children. announce Brian Daines as the

Employee of the Month for

September 2014. Brian has worked

for Facilities Landscape, Operations

& Maintenance since 1996. Before

coming to Facilities he worked for

White Pine and Tony’s Grove

Nursery’s, and was also part owner

of the Garden Gateway Nursery for

Rob Reeder, Director of

LOAM, has said, “Brian is a real

asset to the LOAM department. He

is responsible for creating all of the

beautiful annual flower gardens

found throughout campus. He

designs these works of art, and

along with his crew, he plants and

cultivates these gardens. One day, a

couple of years ago, Brian observed

me taking notes on one of his

gardens. When he asked what I was

doing, I told Brian that I was going

to mimic this beautiful garden at my

house. He responded, “yours will

never look that good!” Brian has

a true gift for creating an

aesthetically pleasing campus.

Thank you, Brian, for a job well

done.”

Eric Hale, Brian’s co-

worker, has said, “Imagine a guy

who, for eighteen years, has come

in to work almost every weekend

to check on his plants, making

sure they are receiving the correct

amount of light and water. Brian

is that guy. The hours he works

Step Up Award: Kellen Tarbot: In conjunction with the

re-commissioning project, Kellen has been working to replace

sixty-eight heating control valves at Ray B. West. This can be

fairly disruptive work. Coordinating with occupants, getting in

and out in a hurry, and keeping the area clean has been critical.

We express our thanks to Kellen for doing such a great job and for

keeping the project running smoothly.

Step Up Award: Josh Mason: Josh has been helping Kellen

Tarbot with the valve replacement project at Ray B. West. This

project would not have gone as smoothly, or as quick, without his

hard work. Josh is such an awesome contributor in whatever we

ask him to do. He is very proactive and has a great attitude. We

get comments on a regular basis from various shop technicians on

how much they enjoy working with Josh and how hard he works.

Congratulations to Josh on this well-deserved recognition.

Winning Spirit Award: Taylor Ransom: Taylor got a call on

Thursday afternoon that a contractor had cut a refrigerant line

and the server room it served would become hot if it was not fixed

quickly. Taylor dropped what he was doing and rushed over to

help the contactor out. He stayed late after quitting time to finish

the job. Even though this wasn’t Taylor’s emergency, he cared

enough to get the job done and never complained. Taylor,

congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

Step Up Award: Jedd Friedli: "Since April of this year, I have been

short one full time employee, who happened to be my Team Leader.

Jedd Friedli, one of my hourly employees, without being officially

asked, has taken that role upon himself. He assists with scheduling,

transporting crew members around campus to our buildings, has

taken over as our safety rep (attends monthly safety training

meetings), and then leads training discussions each month. He has

learned all of the unique things about each of our buildings and

customers within them... no small task. Jedd's help with customer

service has been very valuable to me." Thomas R. Stoddard, SDL

Kellen Tarbot (Plumbers) & Josh Mason (Projects)

Winning Spirit Award: Veloy Hansen: "Veloy has been extremely

valuable to the USTAR Bioenergy Center. On 08/07/2014 Veloy's

keen attention to details saved the lab from flooding. During her

cleaning of the lab, she observed that a student had left a carbonyl

dripping water onto the floor. Veloy alerted me to it and I went there

to correct the situation or else we could have had water leaking to the

ground floor, damaging the ceiling. During her cleaning she also

observed that an unopened package had been dumped into the

garbage and she alerted me to it. When I opened the package, it was

one of the items that we had ordered previously. Thus, it is very

clear that the keen observations of Veloy during her job assignments

have been invaluable to my team. Further, she takes her job very

seriously and makes USTAR 620 a pleasant working environment.

Veloy has exhibited all the qualities of an excellent employee. She is

very special and the students in the building can testify to that. Her

spirit and dedication and the joy and love of her work makes her a

standout for this award." Professor Foster A. Agblevor

Be Careful Out There!

Dear Facilities,

The Travel Office greatly appreciates all that you

did to help with our “rodent” problem. It was an

unpleasant job, we are sure, and you handled it with

great patience. We appreciate all of the extra efforts put

forth on our behalf. Hopefully we will never have to call

you again!

NATIONAL FAMILY HEALTH & FITNESS DAY USA

Thanks to Jeff Chesley, Ray Pitcher, Steve Jenkins, and Scott Jaggi (Finishes Shop) for doing such a beautiful job in striping the football prac-tice fields just west of the Stan Laub Center.

Dear Facilities,

Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers in

celebrating the birth of our little girl! They helped to

brighten the nursery even more! We also want to thank

you for the wonderful picnic lunch that you put on. Little

Julia loved it! Thank you again!

Innovation Award: Jeff

Chesley (Finishes Shop)

When given the task of

painting lines on the

practice football field, Jeff

created a very unique and

effective way to accomplish

the job accurately. He

created spools of twine and a

way to reel it in, along with

use of a golf cart to mount a

paint sprayer on. Many

hours were saved each time

this device was used. Jeff's

innovative invention saved

money by cutting down on

the number of hours spent

doing this task. Well done,

Jeff!
