September 1st - Monsoonal moisture combined with a Pacific weather disturbance produced severe
thunderstorms and very heavy rain across Utah. The heaviest rain fell over the Northern Wasatch Front
and adjacent mountains. Numerous homes in Saratoga Springs were flooded after heavy rainfall caused a
retention pond to fail. Heavy rain also produced debris flows off of the Clay Springs and Seeley Burn
Scars, flooding three homes in Fools Creek and damaging portions of Highway 125. One-inch diameter hail
was reported in Millard, Nephi, Farmington, and along I-80 near the Salt Flats.

Peak Wind Gusts (MPH)
September 11th - Monsoonal moisture interacted with a strong upper-level low, producing heavy rain and
flash flooding across Southern Utah. The most significant event of the day was the failure of the Laub Dike in
Santa Clara from the very heavy rain. All of the water that had accumulated in the retention pond was released
when the dike failed, flooding portions of Santa Clara and damaging 25 to 30 homes and several businesses.
Flash flooding also occurred over the old Highway 91 bridge in Santa Clara, Zion National Park, Capitol Reef
National Park, Beaver Dam, and on Stout Creek, where a fly fishing operation was damaged.
Below and next page: The Laub Dike after it had been breached, and the water making its way down
Santa Clara streets and into local businesses and homes. Photos courtesy of KSL.

September 23rd-25th - A slow-moving upper-level low pressure system brought numerous showers and
thunderstorms to most of Utah. The airmass was cold enough to produce the first snow of the season on the
higher peaks, mainly above 9,000-10,000 feet. Gusty winds accompanied some of the storms.
Left: The first dusting of snow is seen at Alta
on the morning of the 24th. Above: A bird’s eye
