Note: Utah was also invited to both the Sun Bowl and Pineapple Bowl in 1951, but declined. In 1941, Utah was slated to play Hawaii in the Pine-apple Bowl, but the game was canceled after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

SEASON WRAP UP Unheralded to start the season, the Utes won five of their first six

games, including a road win over Indiana. By Nov. 3, Utah was already bowl eligible. The Utes would go on to tie for third in the Mountain West Conference, three places higher than they were picked in the preseason poll.

Only a touchdown separated Utah from a league championship, as the Utes' three league losses were by a total of six points. In head-to-head competition with unbeaten Brigham Young for a share of the MWC title on Nov. 17, Utah dominated all but the last four minutes of the game, when B YU overcame a 21-10 Ute lead to win 24-21. The heartbreaker at B YU was followed by another last-second loss, this one 38-37 at Air Force on Dec. 1. In that game, Utah ran out of time on the AFA 12-yard line.

Despite the late season losses, Utah proved it could dominate on both sides of the ball, as evidenced by blowout wins over New Mexico (37-16), South Florida (52-21), Wyoming (35-0) and UNLV (42-14).

It is a balanced Ute team that will be playing USC in the Sega Sports Las Vegas Bowl. The Utes ranked in the top two in the MWC all year long in total offense, total defense, scoring offense and scoring defense. One of the best teams in the nation defensively (see Very Defensive), Utah also boasts a nationally-ranked run game, led by the second-leading single-season rusher in school history, Dameon Hunter (1,396 yards).

2001 MOUNTAIN WEST ALL-CONFERENCE UTES The official 2001 All-Mountain West Conference football team, as voted on by the league's head coaches and media, cited these Utes:

Second Team CliffRussell,Sr.,WR Dameon Hunter, Sr., RB Lauvale Sape, Sr., DL Antwoine Sanders, So., DB

First Team Doug Kaufusi, Sr, OL Garrett Smith, Jr., DL Jason Kaufusi, So., DL Sheldon Deckart, Jr., LB

ALL-AMERICAN DOUG Senior offensive tackle Doug Kaufusi, a first-team all-Mountain West selection in both 2000 and 2001, has been named a 2001 third-team All-American by The Sporting News. Kaufusi was also named to every all-conference team that had been released by Dec. 10. Those included the Football News, Las Vegas Review Journal and collegefootballnews.com.

MORE UTE HONORS In addition to the official all-conference team noted above, several Utes made a variety of other all-conference teams. Those all-conference listings can be found at the end of this press release.

VERY DEFENSIVE Utah's reputation as a defensive powerhouse under defensive coordi-nator Kyle Whittingham has held true this season, with the Utes finishing their regular season ranked in the nation's top 25 in scoring defense (13), total defense (17), pass efficiency defense (17) and rush defense (24). Utah finished in the top two in the Mountain West Conference in every major defensive category: scoring defense (1), total defense (1), rushing defense (2), pass defense (2) and pass efficiency defense (2). The Ute defense has allowed just 18.5 ppg and 308.2 ypg in total offense. Utah has led the conference in scoring defense since 1998, ranking No. 13,12 and 18 nationally from 1998-2000. Last year, Utah led the league in total defense, scoring defense and pass defense. Its pass defense was ranked third in the nation. Whittingham is in his eighth year on the Utah staff and his seventh year as defensive coordinator.

POCKET PROTECTORS Utah's offensive line has allowed just five sacks all year, which ranks second in the nation behind No. 1 ranked Miami (four sacks allowed). Starting for what is believed to be the best offensive line in Utah football history are: left tackle Doug Kaufusi (6-6,300, Sr.), left guard Ed Ta'amu (6-2,320, Sr.), center Dustin McQuivey (6-3,285, So.), right guard Sean Souza (6-6,296, So.), right tackle Jordan Gross (6-5,308, Jr.) and tight end Michael Richardson (6-2,271, Sr.).

HEAD COACH RON MCBRIDE Ron McBride has an 82-57 record in his 12th year as head Ute coach. He picked up win No. 80 on Oct. 20 against Wyoming. He has the second most wins of any coach in Utah football history. McBride has won a share of two conference titles (1995 and 1999). Including this year, his teams have finished at .500 or better 10 times. He has taken the Utes to six bowl games, including this year's Sega Sports Las Vegas Bowl and has a 2-3 bowl record. McBride is 0-1 against USC.

MAC IN LEAGUE PLAY Ron McBride is 55-38 all-time in conference games. Since Utah joined the Mountain West Conference in 1999, McBride's conference mark is 17-13. All-time against current MWC members, he is 35-29. His record against the other seven MWC schools: Air Force (4-5), Brigham Young (5-7), Colorado State (4-5), New Mexico (8-4), San Diego State (5-4), UNLV (3-0), Wyoming (6-4).

THE NUMBERS'GAME Utah leads the league in time of possession (34:10), a statistic it won in 10 of 11 games ... The ball hog Utes had 114 more plays than their foes (833-719)... Utah is converting on 41% of its third down attempts (72-175) compared to 31% by its opponents (50-159)... Balance is the offensive buzzword: The Utes have averaged 218.9 rushing yards per game and 209.8 passing yards per game overall. In league play, they are slightly more tilted toward the run (237.1-195.3 ypg).

GRIDBITS The Utes are 2-"0 in games played on Christmas Day, but neither game was against a collegiate team. Utah's previous Christmas Day games fell in 1896 (beat City High 6-4) and 1946 (beat the Honolulu All-Stars 40-6)... The only Nevada native on Utah's roster is starting sophomore strong safety Arnold Parker. Parker, a sophomore, is from Las Vegas

DID YOU KNOW? Nineteen different Utes have caught passes this year, including quarterback Lance Rice (2 catches, 1 t o u c h d o w n ) . . . Utah ' s offense is ranked nationally in rushing (No. 12) and total offense (No. 24). The Ute offense is No . 2 in the M W C in scoring offense, total offense and rushing offense ... The Ute defense is even stingier than it looks on paper. While Utah 's 35-0 win over Wyoming was its only real shutout, the defense did not allow a touchdown in a 42-14 win over UNLV (both Rebel TDs were off interceptions) and a 17-3 win over San Diego State. Even the five touchdowns scored by Air Force were deceiving, since three came after Ute turnovers gave the Falcons the ball inside Utah ' s 15-yard line.

MWC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Utah received an M W C player of the week citation three t imes this year, including two by senior running back Dameon Hunter (Oct. 1 and Dec. 3). Sophomore free safety Antwoine Sanders was named M W C player of the week for his first game as an N C A A player on Sept. 3 .

BOUNTIFUL BRAINS Two Utah football players have been named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Football Team. Junior linebacker Brooks Bahr was named to the first team and sophomore center Dustin McQuivey made the second team. Both are natives of Bountiful, Utah, and starters for Utah 's 7-4 team. Bahr has already received his undergraduate degree in biology and is currently in Utah ' s M B A program. He has made the Dean 's List four t imes and received the President 's Award once. Bahr, who carries a 3.95 GPA, has another year of playing eligibility remaining after this season. McQuivey, who has started every game this year at center and also started as a freshman last year, has a 3.57 GPA in business.

COACHES' GAME DAY LOCATIONS Utah ' s offensive coaching staff mans these posit ions on game day: On the field is running backs/receivers coach Vincent White , tight ends/offensive tackles coach Alex Gerke and graduate assistant Jay Hill. In the box is offensive coordinator Craig Ver Steeg, offensive guards/centers coach Don Eck and graduate assistant Kevin Clune. The defensive coaches can be found here: On the field is defensive coordinator Kyle Whitt ingham, defensive tackles/special teams coach Gary Andersen and cornerbacks coach Jugi Hogue. In the box is defensive ends coach Steve Kaufusi and safeties coach Bill Busch.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2002 Utah has four non-conference games finalized for next fall with one more home game to be scheduled. They are: at Utah State (Aug. 31) , Indiana in Salt Lake (Sept. 7), at Arizona (Sept. 14) and at South Florida (Sept. 21). Four of Utah 's seven M W C games , the dates which will be determined this spring, will be home games.

RUNNING BACKS'NOTEBOOK > Senior running back Dameon Hunter (5-11,223) ranks third in the Mountain West Conference and ninth in the nation in rushing, averaging 126.9 yards per game. The second-team all-conference selection has 257 carries for 1,396 yards, an average of 5.4 yards per carry, and 9 touchdowns. In conference games, Hunter averages 141.6 yards per game (third in the MWC) and 6.0 yards per carry. > Dameon Hunter has recorded the second-best season in school history by a Ute running back. Hunter's 1,396 yards surpassed the Utes' most recent 1,000-yard rusher Mike Anderson (currently with the Denver Broncos), who gained 1,173 yards in 1998. The school record is held by Carl Monroe (1,507 in 1982). > Had Dameon Hunter carried the ball as many times as Carl Monroe did in 1982, he would have had to average just 2.1 yards per rush (far below his 5.4-yard average) to match Monroe in yardage. Still, Hunter's 257 carries this year is the second most ever by a Ute, trailing Monroe's 309 in 1982. > Dameon Hunter's 126.9 yards per game rushing average is the second best in a single season behind Carl Monroe (137.0 in 1982). > Dameon Hunter's eight 100-yard games this year is second in school history behind Carl Monroe (9 in 1982). Hunter had 104 yards vs. Oregon, 164 vs. Indiana, 177 vs. New Mexico, 109 vs. Wyoming, 148 vs. CSU, 137 vs. UNLV, 106 vs. BYU and a career-best 226 vs. Air Force. His 177 yards against New Mexico came against the league's best run defense and one that was ranked No. 2 in the nation at the time, allowing just 27.0 rushing yards per game. > Dameon Hunter and backfield partner Adam Tate (6-1,230, Sr.) were the best rushing tandem in the Mountain West Conference this year. Hunter ranks third in the league in yards per game (126.9), while Tate is eighth (74.5 ypg). > Utah's senior running backs Dameon Hunter and Adam Tate have the two longest runs from the line of scrimmage in the MWC this year. Hunter (74 yards vs. New Mexico) and Tate (73 yards vs. SDSU) rank

LAST UTAH-USC GAME A rout turned into a nail-biter in the second half of the 1993 Freedom Bowl, a game USC held on to win 28-21. The Trojans, tri-champions of the Pac-10, jumped to a 28-0 halftime lead over Utah, the fourth-place finisher in the Western Athletic Conference. (Since 1999, Utah has competed in the Mountain West Conference). But Utah roared back to score 21 second half points and the defense, led by All-American and current NFL defensive end Luther Elliss, blanked USC in the final 30 minutes. Quarterback Mike McCoy's Hail Mary pass with 0:08 remaining was picked off, averting Utah's upset bid.

"We've always played well in Las Vegas. It is our No. 1 choice as a bowl game. It's a great place to play. It's central enough so that family members, past players and fans can go, and it's a fun town. We'd love to have a kind of Ute caravan come along with us, made up of families and everyone who supports the Ute program. We welcome any fans to make it a five-day holiday with our team. It's a great Christmas present for our players and fans.

'We think this is the best bowl game in the conference and we think USC is a great opponent for us. They (the Trojans) are a team with a national reputation and they play in a great conference. Plus, USC is coming into this game on a roll. We're excited to play on Christmas day before a national television audience. We love that we'll be the only game in town."

UTE HONORS PART II In addition to the official all-Mountain West Conference team, the following news entities placed Utes on their all-MWC teams. Any teams released after Dec. 10 are not listed.

The Football News (first team only): Doug Kaufusi, Sr., OL Michael Richardson, Sr., TE Lauvale Sape, Sr., DL Garrett Smith, Jr., DE

The Las Vegas Review-Journal all-MWC team (voted on by 20 league media members):

Dameon Hunter, Sr., RB CliffRussell,Sr.,WR Jason Kaufusi, So., DL Lauvale Sape, Sr., DL Antwoine Sanders. So., DB* *(Defensive Newcomer of the Year)

MCBRIDE SAYS "I feel very positive about what this team has done. It has achieved more than anyone thought it could. Other than B YU, these guys won more games than anyone else in the confer-ence. We played all of our toughest games on the road and we went 5-0 at home. We played consistently well all year. We were six points away from winning the conference title.

"We have the second most productive running back in the history of the school in Dameon Hunter, and he and Adam Tate might be the best 1-2 punch in the country. We're 24th in total offense and 17th in total defense so we'll be bringing an exciting team on both sides of the ball. Our defense has always been good but our offensive numbers have increased dramatically this year under a whole new scheme. This offensive line is probably the best in school history. Giving up only five sacks in 11 games when you throw the ball 328 times is an amazing stat.

Honorable Mention QB Lance Rice, RB Adam Tate, TE Michael Richardson, OL Dustin McQuivey, DL Ma'ake Kemoeatu, DB Arnold Parker

  • 2001 UTAH FOOTBALL GAME RECAPS GAMEl SEPT.1 Utah 23, Utah State 19 Salt Lake Gty Rice-Eccles Stadium [36,557]

SALT LAKE CITY Utah handled Utah State more easily than the final score of 23-19 indicates. The Utes were up 23-6 with 2:30 remaining and 23-13 with 0:06 left in the game. The Aggies made the outcome close by scoring a late TD and then returning a punt 64 yards for another six points as time expired.

But for the late breakdown, just about everything went right for the Utes, who unveiled a varied new offense. Utah's defense was its normal solid self, holding USU to 301 total yards, just 70 rushing, and causing five Aggie turnovers. Utah was led by a pair of JC transfers: running back Marty Johnson (95 yards and 1 TD) and free safety Antwoine Sanders (2 interceptions and 3 pass breakups).

Place kicker Ryan Kaneshiro scored 11 points on three field goals and two PATs. Sheldon Deckart had a career-best 15 tackles, most on the team.

GAME 2 SEPT. 8 Oregon 24, Utah 10 Eugene, Ore. Autzen Stadium [45,712]

EUGENE Utah played the No. 7 ranked Oregon Ducks close, but fell 24-10 before a sold-out Autzen Stadium crowd. Utah tied the game at 10-10 six minutes into the second quarter, when Adam Tate bulled in from three yards out, but the Utes wouldn't score again.

The Ute defense shut out the Ducks in the third quarter and allowed just one touchdown in the fourth in a fine effort against Oregon's highly touted offense. The Ducks failed to convert on all nine third down attempts.

Utah's offense produced 373 yards, 104 from running back Dameon Hunter on a career day. Lance Rice was 21-of-39 for 170 passing yards and Cliff Russell had seven catches for 100 yards. Second-string QB Ryan Breska relieved Rice late in the fourth quarter and was 4-of-12 for 82 yards in his first college game.

    Utah State 3 3 0 13. Utah 0 20 3 0.

GAME 4 SEPT. 29 Utah 37, New Mexico 16 Salt Lake Gty Rice-Eccles Stadium [32,100]

BLOOMINGTONA 14 point fourth quarter and a penalty-aided second-chance goal line stand on a two-point conver-sion attempt helped Utah beat Big Ten foe Indiana 28-26.

Quarterback Lance Rice and running back Dameon Hunter both turned in career efforts to lead the Ute offense to a season-best 447 total yards. Rice completed 21 of 29 passes for 278 yards and 2 TDs, his first passing touchdowns of the season. Hunter rushed for 164 yards and 2 TDs and averaged 5.3 yards per carry.

Defensive end Jason Kaufusi (7 tackles, 3 for a loss) and free safety Antwoine Sanders (11 tackles) wore themselves out chasing Indiana star Antwoine Randle El. They were a big reason the Heisman candidate passed for just 157 yards and ran for 69. Bo Nagahi picked off his first career interception in the fourth quarter and his 26-yard return set up the winning TD pass from Rice to Dennis Smith.

SALT LAKE CITYDameon Hunter (177 yards 2 TDs) and Adam Tate (76 yards, 2 TDs) tore apart the nation's second-best team against the rush and Utah won its conference opener against New Mexico 37-16. It was the third career-rushing day in a row for Hunter and his third straight 100-yard game. He spearheaded a Ute offense that scored on its first possession, but then stalled until backup quarterback Ryan Breska checked in midway through the second quarter and hit Cliff Russell for a 46-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute left. Starter

Lance Rice finished the game and directed Utah to three more touchdown drives and a 33-yard Ryan Kaneshiro field goal. Utah walloped New Mexico on paper, dishing out 465 yards of total offense to UNM's 311. The U. defense was led by line-backer Sheldon Deckart, who had eight tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and two pass breakups. Utah forced New Mexico to fumble twice in the red zone, recovering both fumbles, and shut out the Lobos in the first and fourth quarters.

    GAME 6 OCT. 20 Utah 35, Wyoming 0 Salt Lake Gty Rice-Ecdes Stadium [36,795]

SALT LAKE CITYUtah pummeled a respectable South Florida team 52-21 in a game where nearly every Ute that suited up played. The Utes led 31-0 at the half, holding the ball for all but seven minutes and racking up 320 yards of total offense to USF's 137. The teams played to a 21-21 tie in the second half after USF scored with just 0:08 left in the game against Utah's second string defense.

But for penalties (Utah had 13 for 158 yards), the Utes might have pitched a shutout. Wide receiver Josh Lyman had a career night with seven catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns and Adam Tate rushed for a season-high 122 yards and a TD. Tate also caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Lance Rice, who was 16 for 21 for 238 yards and four touchdowns. Utah's 509 total yards was a season-best and its 52 points, its most in a game since 1999, was the most ever scored against USF.

  • 2001 UTAH FOOTBALL GAME RECAPS GAME 11 DEC.1 Air Force 38, Utah 37 Colorado Springs, Colo. Falcon Stadium [25,702]

COLORADO SPRINGSFor the second straight week a fourth-quarter meltdown cost Utah what appeared to be a certain win. This time, the Utes lost to Air Force 38-37 in a game that was originally scheduled for Sept. 15.

The game began like a track meet with the teams sprinting to a 14-14 first quarter tie. While Utah's defense settled in after that, allowing AFA just 23 yards of total offense in the second half, the Ute offense continued to manhandle AFA. Despite a huge gap in total offense (543-274 yards) and first downs (28-15), the game was still close thanks to three Ute turnovers that gave AFA the ball inside the Ute 15-yard line. The Falcons scored on all three miscues.

The turnovers, along with a blocked extra point, turned what should have been a Ute rout into a 38-37 AFA lead with 4:18 left in the game. As it had all day, Utah responded by marching down the field. The Utes made it all the way to the Air Force 12-yard line with two downs and 0:20 to use.

But then confusion set in over whether to kick a chip shot field goal or run one more play and quarterback Lance Rice failed to get out of bounds before time expired. Dameon Hunter had a career-high 226 rushing yards in the loss.
