Decarbonisation, affordability and the need for a secure energy supply are all contributing to the way power needs are being met across the globe. Solar PV, distributed generation and storage, electric vehicle, home energy management platforms are giving many consumers direct technology choice for the first time - enabling third-party companies to erode the market share of incumbent Utilities that have largely operated in a limited competitive environment.

Long insulated by heavy regulation, modest technology change and predictable consumer behaviour and Utilities are finally facing the same kind of competitive pressures that have changed other industries.

In converging markets there is need to share resources optimally and find solutions for addressing big challenges, arising out of evolving changes. For doing so it is impera-tive for Utilities to come together to remodel and upshift to the next generation to be swifter, more agile, efficient and creative to explore new business models and services. This cannot be created in isolation but requires co-creation with all stakeholders.

STRUCTURE

WUS is a non-profit initiative and engages world-class individuals in different committees to drive its objectives. The focus of each member is on knowledge sharing and enabling dialogue over and above commercial interests. The following structure shall hold the summit together.

Convenor

Tasked with convening each edition of the WUS. Reviews, validates and finalizes the global perspective on the concept and subject of WUS. The Convenor anchors the WUS Core Group meetings from inception to the summit.

Core Group

Tasked with building the broad vision, direction, structure and planning for WUS. This group helps shape strategies and guidelines and provides valuable insights into building a sustainable model for WUS. The core group members are the links across multiple editions to ensure that the essence of the WUS is maintained across editions before it evolves into a formal organization. Members from founding Partners are automatically invited to this group.

Advisory Committee

Tasked with the setting of a neutral agenda, drive conversations, and suggest formats and speakers. The committee will determine the 'Theme' and 'Topics for deliberation' for each edition. The committee will not enroll any member from Industry. The committee members help and provide direction to Organizing Committee which will be the principal-in-charge of executing the event on the ground.

Organizing Committee

Tasked with ensuring that the event is properly organized and financially self-sustaining by leveraging support from advisory and standing committee members. The committee brings together country partners, knowledge partners, execution partners, sponsors, and delegates to achieve the objectives of WUS.

Standing Committee

Tasked with bringing the global and regional geopolitical perspective and representation to WUS. The committee members share challenges and opportunities faced by the utilities at the micro and macro level, and also share measures they are taking to address them. They suggest, recommend and provide direction for influencing their respective region’s utility leaders in government, business, and international organizations to participate in the summit as speakers, delegates, partners etc.

Secretariat

The WUS secretariat drives the daily activities, supporting the Committee Members in planning, organizing and managing a successful summit.

Partners

The founding partners of WUS include IEEE, IEEE PES, IEEMA and ELECRAMA. Each edition of WUS shall also have edition specific partners for support, media engagement and knowledge sharing. The partners shall ensure that they promote WUS in their networks and support in achieving the vision, mission, and objectives of WUS.

Sponsors

WUS engages with organizations of global repute who have an interest in furthering the objectives of WUS by financially supporting the summit.

The theme for World Utility Summit™ 2018 is “Utility of Utilities - The future of Utilities in the era of convergence”. Significant changes are happening in the provision and consumption of energy services leading to convergence of factors that would alter the conventional definition of utility.

With more and more integration of the renewable energy into the grid, Utilities are embracing multitude of technologies to manage the complexities for such a grid or supply. The adoption of smart grid technologies, SCADA systems, and data analytics in real time will enable Utilities to optimally manage the demand, supply and to make data driven decisions in real-time.

Future Utilities will embrace internet of things (IoT), machine learning, artificial intelligence and plethora of new technologies to deliver energy, and other services to ever more demanding applications and consumers. These developments will bring the much-needed transparency in the system resulting in better consumer engagement. With the help of digital and smart technologies, will transform Utilities in an unprecedented manner.

World Utility Summit™ 2018 which will be spread over three days from 11-13 March, 2018 will provide common ground for electricity, water and gas utility personnel to discuss with Industries, Consultants, Service Providers, Researchers and Regulators and re-define the “Utility of Utilities” in the changing business environment.

CONVERGENCE

Empowering electricity, water and food security

In view of the changing utility landscape, the need arises to re-define the “Utility of Utilities” focusing on ensuring electricity, food and water security. The global community is well aware of food, energy and water challenges, but has so far addressed them in isolation, within sectoral boundaries. A comprehensive approach to sectoral management, through enhanced communication, collaboration and coordination, is needed to ensure optimization that co-benefits and trade-offs are considered and the appropriate safeguards are put in place.

Harmonizing the regulatory frame work for Utilities

Realizing that sector specific regulatory frameworks have evolved over the years for different utilities, the time has come to co-opt best practices across domains to the changing times. The main aim is to ensure transparency, safeguarding the quality and delivering cost effective services to consumers while taking into account the environmental impact and safeguarding interests of all stake holders.

Racing with technologies

Utilities strive to catch up with technologies and many technologies driven projects are implemented to provide quality supply and services to consumers. Technology projects that are user centric rather than vendor driven see the success and acceptability in a faster phase. Understanding and discussing the various technological developments that are needed will benefit both the utilities and industries.

Impact of environmental regulation on Utility business

The Paris Agreement by UNFCC in October 2016 which brings all nations into a common cause to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and decarbonizing the economies. This will also enhance financial support to renewables. The developing countries will have minor concessions for some time. However, these changes will have significant implications to the utilities business.

Convergence of Utility Business

Utilities and the allied industries need to re-look into their business models while world is geared up to implement the Paris Agreement. Many utilities are consolidating their business operations and significantly, electricity, water and gas utilities are transforming themselves from ‘poles & wires’, ‘valves & pipes’ and ‘regulators & cylinders’ companies to give value added services to consumers through convergence of service from technological front.

Transportation electrification, storage and renewable energy integration nexus

This will have huge impact on electric utilities as the world moves towards electric transportation. The advancement of storage technologies will be a key enabler of transport electrification; this along with the induction of renewable energy systems will dramatically alter the human and material transportation in the near future.
