Renewables integration driving

the need for flexible power...

As increasingly high Renewable Portfolio Standards and

environmental regulations drive the uptake of renewables across

the US, issues of transmission capacity and generation intermittency

will place increasing strain on existing power infrastructure.

The North America Renewable Power Advisory predicts that the

share of renewable energy in the US power mix will increase to

12% by 2025, up from 4% today. The lack of an effective

electricity storage system means that utilities must deal with

balancing disruptive power supplies, along with the cost and load

factors involved in doing so.

As greater strain is put on maintaining reliability, the importance

of flexible power production will rapidly increase. Flexibility is

achievable through many different options including gas fired

reserve, load management and energy storage options.

The Utility Scale Flexible Power Summit aims to bring together

the full spectrum of the United States utility sector, from

investor owned utilities to local cooperatives, to explore the

options available in developing flexible power management.

The meeting will examine the issues currently limiting optimal

generation and transmission flexibility, as well as exploring the

potential of future storage and financing options. The summit will

provide the opportunity to network with permitting bodies, grid

operators and financiers, as well as companies providing the latest

innovations in power management technology.

Key topics to be addressed at theUtility Scale Flexible Power Summit:

1. Policy developments in relation toimproving transmission capacity:

Exploring the success of integrating renewables andtransmission policy. How can cross-regional projects beencouraged to increase reliability? How should theissue of financing be resolved? How can investmentincentives be created?

2. Project development:

How are current renewable energy projectsincorporating flexibility? What technologies arebeing utilized?Where is funding available? Whichinvestment opportunities are most appealing? Howcan long term investment opportunities bestimulated?

3. Maximizing the flexibility of gas-firedgeneration:

The new regulations favoring quick-starttechnologies? The newest in ‘fast start’ options, what will be the economic impact on gas due torenewables penetration? What is the potential ofdistributed generation in flexibility?

4. Examining ancillary service marketdevelopment:

FERC’s frequency control order and it’s implicationson flexibility? The role of forecasting in providingadvanced intermittency control. Who will pay forthese services? What are the main issues restrictingthe market?

5. The latest developments in demandresponse techniques:

How are better monitoring and forecastingtechnologies improving the management ofintermittent resources? The evolution of FERC

classifications for Demand Response Sytems.

6. Examining the developing storagemarket:

Exploring storage policy and type, which are themost economical? Could they replace the ancillaryservice market? Learn about the pilot projects ofother utilities. Will storage be able to effectivelyincrease reliability of intermittent generation?
