Background• JLab recently began using
well known, credible Site personnel to deliver high priority messages.
• The videos are meant to convey priority topics, be 7-10 minutes in length and should be used at the appropriate frequency.
• This method has been similar in efficacy to Senior Management delivery.

Why use well-known, credible co-workers?• Delivery and endorsement
of Safety messages by well-known, exemplary personnel drives behavior across the site.
• Co-workers typically seek out the videos, making the take-away message more effective.
• Site feedback is that younger personnel apply the lessons very quickly, further perpetuating positive change.

How do I get them to participate?• If they believe the message
is valid and helpful to the site, most often they will participate.
• Make it easy. Schedule the video shoot at their convenience, provide some talking points and take as little time as possible.
• Let them see the video before it’s distributed to the site or shown in large meetings.

Which topics should they address?• Subject Matter Experts
(SME’s) should address Safety topics in their specific areas.
• General talking points may include:– Work planning,
coordination and plan adjustment within their subject areas.
– Situational awareness of hazards if work is to be conducted in their areas.
– “Tips and tricks” for non-normal, high hazard work.

How often can I do this?• Since this is similar to
Senior Management delivery, the frequency should be limited.
• Some other considerations: – Most likely there is a
finite number of people with the credentials to deliver these types of messages.
– SME’s have the most impact when delivering focused, programmatic messages (i.e., Fall Protection Safety, Work Planning, Electrical Safety, etc).

Summary• Well-known, credible site personnel can make Safety communications more
effective.– Their delivery is most often seen as an endorsement by the site, similar
to Senior Management delivery.
