As the Congressional Members for Texas District 15 and 34, we could not be more excited about our new University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), which has been created through a merger of The University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg and The University of Texas at Brownsville. With enrollment of approximately 30,000 students, UTRGV will offer new opportunities to students and the communities of the South Texas region.
Throughout the last 14 years, The University of Texas-Pan American has impacted the lives of more than half a million people through its Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology Initiative (HESTEC). Since its inception in 2002, this nationally recognized program has evolved into one of the most innovative and successful events of this type for raising awareness of STEM education and career opportunities for Hispanic students. Each year, tens of thousands of students, educators, parents and members of the community flock to the campus for this weeklong event.
Through a public-private partnership designed to bring together leaders in corporate America, federal government and education, such as yourself, HESTEC is unmatched in its capacity to serve the educational needs of the K-12 community in the region, while strengthening the pipeline of students ready to enter the workforce and fulfill the labor needs of corporate and federal employers. Poised to become a hub for innovation and emerging research technologies, we are convinced that the creation of UTRGV will only further catalyze the impact that this nationally recognized program can have in preparing students to enter new and high-skilled jobs that require a strong STEM college education.

We stand at the threshold of one of the most significant transformations the Rio Grande Valley has ever experienced. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) will open its doors in Fall 2015, utilizing the assets, resources and talents of our two legacy institutions: The University of Texas at Brownsville and The University of Texas-Pan American.
A signature program of UTRGV is HESTEC – Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology Week. Congressman Rubén Hinojosa, recognizing the increasing needs of a diverse workforce educated in science and technology, founded HESTEC in 2002 and over the past 14 years, HESTEC has established itself nationally as an unprecedented program for promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education to a diverse base of students and educators throughout Texas and the rest of the nation.
With the support of leaders in corporate America, government and education, HESTEC has brought to students and educators exciting presentations by world-renowned speakers, interactive educational exhibits, dynamic robotics competitions and much more.
Now, through our partnership with SpaceX, UTRGV is launching its Center of Excellence, STARGATE, which holds the promise of having major impact on the emerging space industry. STARGATE will provide a pipeline of researchers, innovators and leaders that will help UTRGV reach global status.

South Texas, Texas, and the country’s scientific and economic stability will face continued challenges without an increase in the number of students entering STEM, medical and information technology fields. From worker shortages, to the loss of high-paying jobs, to the loss of critical research and manufacturing resources, the lack of STEM graduates will have a significant impact on the country. To address this issue, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) remains committed to growing and expanding the reach of Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) to attract a larger number of students, teachers, parents, and congressional leaders in order to develop new programs and approaches that will address the need for more STEM workers and professionals at a regional, national and global level.

CONGRESSIONALROUNDTABLE
Led by Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15), the roundtable will bring together federal leaders, corporate executives, and distinguished educators to share successful strategies and resources for further strengthening STEM education in the region and reinforcing the pipeline of students entering STEM careers nationwide.
EDUCATOR DAYSponsors and partners will engage teachers and administrators by presenting dynamic professional development workshops and presentations geared toward providing resources they can take back to their classrooms to promote STEM to students.

HESTEC Week kicks off with the Congressional Dinner, a by-invitation-only event, that brings together distinguished leaders in Corporate America, federal government, and education for a night of networking, dining and entertainment. In celebration of the impact HESTEC has made over the years, the event will honor HESTEC alumni.

LATINA DAYHundreds of female students and their mothers are exposed to prominent, professional female executives and motivational speakers who share their secrets to success. The audience is also treated to an entertaining fashion show designed to prepare young women on how to dress in the business world.
ROBOTICS DAYTeams of students participate in an adrenaline-charged competition that takes engineering to an exciting new level. This exciting robotics competition teaches students about engineering programming and exposes them to real-life engineering applications.
FALL CAREER EXPODuring HESTEC Week, UTRGV college students along with others from throughout Texas, meet with representatives from some of the country’s top Fortune 500 companies. Recruiting representatives from corporations and government agencies promote internships and professional employment while conducting on-site interviews. The expo is open to all majors.
MIDDLE SCHOOLCHALLENGE
Thousands of middle school students will participate in hands-on activities and visit educational exhibits that teach them about the different and exciting areas of STEM. Sponsors and partners are invited to exhibit assets and resources that highlight how STEM is applicable to their respective industry.
The week’s STEM celebration concludes with a fun-filled day open to the community. Throughout the day, the public is treated to interactive educational
exhibits for all ages, delicious food-booths manned by university student organizations, local and national entertainers and much more. Representatives
from the nation’s leading corporate and government agencies may participate by hosting information booths located on campus grounds.

Vocational
The economy of the United States is directly linked to the existence of institutions of higher education and vocational and technical schools and their ability to foster the intellect, natural gifts and ingenuity of today’s generation. In order to develop the most capable and skilled young minds ready to enter STEM-related professions and trades, it is key to help students succeed academically in their pursuit of their choice of postsecondary education to fit their calling, from certification programs available at trade schools to degrees attained through a college education.
HESTEC engages students in learning about the different options available to them after high school graduation, highlighting how a strong STEM educational foundation is integral in all types of professions and trades. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 15.9% of the population (age 25+, 2009-2013) residing in Hidalgo County, which is home to UTRGV’s Edinburg campus, has a Bachelor’s degree or higher, while 15.4% of the population (age 25+, 2009-2013) residing in Cameron County, which is home to UTRGV’s Brownsville campus, has a Bachelor’s degree or higher. To close the educational gap and promote accessibility to opportunities for all, UTRGV seeks to create a postsecondary education pursuing culture that recruits the region’s and nation’s brightest to not only its campuses but to its partnering vocational and technical schools.
In doing so, UTRGV seeks to prepare the next generation of STEM leaders whose knowledge, skill sets and abilities can contribute to the advancement of the global market of the 21st century.
