SKI SEASONWHEN THERE IS NO SNOW, THERE IS STILL A UTS SKI CLUB PARTY!

When it’s not snow season, it’s party season and this club can throw a damn good party to fundraise for the snowy season ahead. Two hugely successful social events have set the Ski club up for what will be a fantastic social week down down at Thredbo.

The after party and focus of the club is in the planning phase for the Snow Uni Games race week, from 25-30 August. With a lot of our successful skiers moving on from UTS some of our more experienced committee racers (namely Nick Karlowatz and Liz Pilat) are recruiting as much new blood as possible through racing circuit connections with a hope of sending an even bigger UTS team than in 2012. So far they’ve received quite a few interested parties.

UTS GORDON VS SYDNEY UNIVERSITY UTS STUDENTS WERE TREATED TO AN AWESOME DAY OF RUGBY, ENTERTAINMENT AND BEATIFUL SYDNEY WEATHER FOR THE INAUGURAL 2013 VICE CHANCELLORS CUP.

On Saturday 25th May, eighty UTS students lined the fences and crowded the hill to watch two rivals play it out on the footy field. The inaugral event was a fantastic way to kick off the social side of thenew agreement that was signed between UTS and Gordon Rugby at the beginning of the year.

With free food and drinks flowing, entertainment and music pumping and good old footy challenges and prizes being awarded, the energy on the hill was building. It hit a high when the ever intense UTS v Sydney University Touch Football showdown got underway. UTS were the victors by 3 tries to 0, a great result which got the crowd pumped and for the main event, the First Grade match.

In a match full of passion, Gordon came out firing and matched Sydney University for most of the first half but as the game wore on, the experience and size of Sydney University started to take its toll on the young Gordon side. Despite some moments of brilliance from Gordon, Sydney University held strong to run away with a win, defeating the hosts 49 to 10. Both sides fought hard throughout the match but it was Sydney who capitalised on their opportunities, running in six tries to one. UTS EAP scholar Tom Matthews scored the Gordon try, and fellow UTS EAP scholars Luke Rissman and Sebastian Murphy both had great games.

Despite the final result the day was a great success with everyone enjoying themselves and asking for another event like this to be put on. So stay tuned for details on the next Gordon v Sydney University rematch, which will be held on the 10th August, at Sydney University.

THREE UTS ELITE ATHLETE SCHOLARS WILL BE REPRESENTING AUSTRALIA AND UTS AT THE SUMMER UNIVERSIADE IN KAZAN, RUSSIA FROM 6–17 JULY.

UTS EAP Housing scholar Chris Dyson has been selected for the Men’s Water Polo team, Cheryl Chan has been selected for Fencing and Talissa Taurins for Sprint Kayaking, and all three are very excited to be a part of the Uniroos.

Chris Dyson, Water PoloChris has been a member of the national water polo team since 2008, also competing in the Australian National League. Chris transferred to UTS in 2012 after a season playing professional water polo for Montpellier in France. He holds a Developing International Scholarship at the NSW Institute of Sport, and this will be his second World Uni Games, having also been a part of the team that went to China in 2011. Chris is also a recipient of the inaugural UTS EAP Housing Scholarship for 2013. He is studying a B. Human Movement.

Cheryl Chan, FencingCheryl first represented Australia in Fencing at the age of 20, at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She has toured internationally many times since then, competing in various Asian Championships and World Championships, and this will also be her second World Uni Games, having also competed in China in 2011. Cheryl is a Law student, completing a Juris Doctor at UTS.

Talissa Taurins, KayakingA first year Sports and Exercise Management student, this will be Talissa’s first World Uni Games. She has been a member of the National Talent Squad since 2010, and the Australian Junior Kayak squad since 2012, and trains with UTS Alumni and 2012 Olympic kayaker Jo Brigden-Jones. Last year, in her first competition competing for Australia Talissa made two finals at the Olympic Hopes Sprint Canoe-Kayak competition.

RIVALS SUPRISED BY UTS SWIMMING TALENT SIXTEEN UTS SWIMMING CLUB REPRESENTATIVES COMPETED AT THE MQU INTERVARSITY CHALLENGE ON FRIDAY 5 APRIL!

The UTS Swimming Club had some fantastic results with super fast times being achieved across the night, held at the Mac Uni Pool. There were even some surprised faces from other Universities across Sydney!

During April and May, the club also had five swimmers compete at national level competitions: the Australian Masters Championships (Tom Rhall) and the 2013 Energy Australia Swimming Championships (Jessie Quinn, James Stacey and Kurt Herzog). At the Masters, Tom won gold in all of his events while Angela received 2 Gold, 2 Silvers and a Bronze. At the 2013 Energy Australia Swimming Championships swimmers raced against Olympic standard swimmers including Christian Springer, James Magnusson, the Campbell sisters who were trying to qualify for the World Championships in Barcelona this year. Both James and Kurt made the finals and semi finals for their races but a huge congratulations goes to Jessie Quinn who was a key factor in her club wining Bronze in the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay.

A BALL OF A TIME!After 218 innings, 3216 career runs, best score of 7/45, 439 wickets - Sydney Tigers cricketer, Mr Nathan Robertson–Ball has put down the bat and ball. Both on and off the field Nathan has played a huge role in the Sydney Cricket Club. Winning the T/20 First Grade Premiership to being the SCG XI Co-ordinator, Operations Committee, Social Committee Director. But statistics aside we wanted to know a bit more about what he would take away from his time as a player...

WHAT ARE YOUR WORDS OF WISDOM FOR ANY YOUNG CRICKETERS?

“The better person you are, the better cricketer you will become, the more you will enjoy it, the longer the impact of the game and those you meet in it will remain in it and influence you. I’ve been very fortunate to meet some fantastic people during my time playing and many will remain friends for a long time.”

DID YOU HAVE ANY ON FIELD OR PRE-GAME RITUALS?

“Not really, but I would always turn left at the top of my bowling mark. I could probably also say that even though it wasn’t a ritual it was very habitual and that was giving batsman a hard time while they were in the middle.”

WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT PLAYING CRICKET?

“I have been very fortunate and have great friends and memories from my time playing with the Tigers. This includes playing with and against international and first class cricketers and testing myself in that company, but also mixing it with a number of really fantastic Tigers players like Greg Hayne who I was equally, if not more proud to play with than the bigger names. In the last couple of years I enjoyed helping out with some of the younger guys too like Tom Ortiz, Sandy Rogers and Islam.”

We are sure Nathan we be hugely missed by his team mates on the field, but the good thing about sport is it creates friendships that will last a lifetime.

LADIES DAY AT THE AFLA GLORIOUS SUNNY SATURDAY GREETED MANY GORGEOUS LADIES FOR THE ANNUAL UTS AFL BATS LADIES DAY ON APRIL 27TH.

This annual event for the University’s AFL club has now become a social institution and continues to draw huge numbers to support the various teams in what is a cracking day out. The Bats are based in the Eastern Suburbs and their home ground of Trumper Park in Paddington provides a beautiful leafy backdrop for a day of great fun and of course competitive AFL footy.

This year saw the continued growth of Ladies Day and the club experienced its biggest turn out for the event yet, as hundreds turned up to cheer on the teams. The Bats have also moved to the next level in terms of refreshments and entertainment on the day with a fully stocked bar and all day bbq to satisfy the masses. In addition, all ladies on the day received a glass of champagne on arrival and a goody bag with various beauty products.

On the field the footy was hard fought and uncompromising as always. There are 5 grades at the Bats catering for all levels of AFL ability and results were mixed on the day with 3 of the 5 teams winning. Unfortunately in the last game of the day, the Premier Division side went down narrowly to arch rivals Manly.

This didn’t dampen the spirits of the crowd and the fun activities took over. The Ladies Longest Kick competition was hotly contested with dozens of girls taking part and putting in an impressive performance and the day was rounded out by an extensive raffle for prizes of beauty treatments and hair appointments at some of Sydney’s best salons.

As the sun went down over picturesque Trumper Pack, many of those in attendance went back to the Light Brigade Hotel, the Bats sponsor, and continued the party late into the night.

SHAMROCKS SHINEWith competitive players, convincing wins, a new kit it’s only natural Shamrock talent get selected for NSW team positions!April began with a lot of competitive football for the Shamrocks. On the 7th they competed at the University Cup hosted by Macquarie University and also included Sydney University and UNSW. Although the competition was won by UNSW it was a great opportunity for the team to unveil their new on and off-field apparel and for the new players to get to know the game in a shorter Round Robin format.

The official season opened on the 13th April against a new team, Randwick City Angels. With a full bench of players the Shamrocks won convincingly. Round 2 was washed out and then in round 3 (which coincided with the UTS Bats Ladies Day) on 27th April, the Shamrocks had a narrow loss to Southern Power.

FANTASTIC NSW STATE TEAM ANNOUNCEMENTS

In other news, in early April the NSW State Team was announced which includes 2 Shamrocks – Sandra Ryan and Christine McCutcheon. The team will travel to Cairns in June to compete in the Division 1 National Championships.

OH SO SWEENY...Beth Sweeny started representing NSW in Futsal and Football in her early teens, and has now been selected into the Australian Women’s Futsal squad to compete in the 2013 Women’s World Cup in Columbia. We wanted to get to know her on a more personal level...

THERE IS NO OFF SWITCH ON A UTS TIGERUTS TIGERS RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB HAVE HAD A SOLID, IF NOT SPECTACULAR, START TO THE 2013 SEASON.

The First Grade team is looking to improve on its runner’s up effort of 2012, and started the season with a 34-16 win against the RailCorp Apprentices that was at times brilliant, but somewhat disjointed. Next, a bare bones First Grade team travelled to Canberra and was unlucky to lose 30-22 against ADFA Knights. The gutsy result could have produced a different result if the Tigers’ goal kicking had been better than expected. Finally, UTS ended April with a 12-24 home loss against arch rivals, Norwest.

The Second Grade team is looking for its third consecutive Premiership. Apart from a forfeit loss to ADFA Knights, the Tigers came back from 0-16 down to defeat RailCorp Apprentices 30-28 and more recently defeated Norwest in the grand final rematch, 32-10.
