home games in bold played at Alamodome

SATURDAy’S GAMe: UTSA (3-6) will conclude its inaugural season at home against Minot State (2-7) on Saturday, Nov. 19. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at the Alamodome.

TuNiNg iN: The game will be televised by the Longhorn Network (check local listings for availability). Andrew Monaco (play-by-play) and Ahmad Brooks (analysis) have the call. The game can be heard live in the San Antonio area on 92.5 FM The Patriot. Andy Everett (play-by-play) and Ed Suarez (analysis) will call the action. The pregame show begins at 11 a.m. and there will be a one-hour postgame show. The broadcast also can be heard live online at goUTSA.com or on your mobile phone with the free iHeartRadio app. UTSA will provide live stats at goUTSA.com.

McNeeSe STATe RewiNd: Andre Anderson rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries and McNeese State held off a late UTSA rally in a 24-21 victory. Anderson became the first running back to eclipse the century mark against the Roadrunners, who fell to 3-6 on the year. The Cowboys (5-5) scored the game’s first 17 points before the UTSA offense came alive. Josh Lewis’ 30-yard field goal with one tick remaining in the opening quarter gave McNeese State an early 3-0 lead. Champlain Babin’s 5-yard rushing touchdown midway through the second period stretched the advantage to 10 and Anderson’s 21-yard scamper a little less than four minutes later made it 17-0. Evans Okotcha capped a six-play, 61-yard drive when he plunged into the end zone from one yard out with 39 seconds left in the half, which pulled UTSA to within 10. Eric Soza’s 7-yard scoring toss to David Morgan late in the third quarter cut the advantage to 17-14. After Sean Ianno’s potential game-tying 48-yard field goal was short midway through the final stanza, the Cowboys responded with an eight-play, 69-yard march that culminated with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Darius Carey to Josh Jordan, which put McNeese back in front by 10. The Roadrunners answered a mere 45 seconds later when Soza connected with Jake Wanamaker on a 26-yard strike to make it 24-21, but the Cowboys were able to run off all but seven seconds to essentially clinch the three-point win. Kam Jones set program records with eight receptions for 120 yards and it marked his third 100-yard performance in the last five games. Meanwhile, Cody Rogers paced the defense with a school-record 16 tackles.

ScouTiNg MiNoT STATe: The Beavers, an NAIA program out of Minot, N.D., will come into Saturday’s tilt with a 2-7 record. Losers of its last two outings, Minot State was off last weekend after dropping a 10-7 decision at Black Hills (S.D.) State on Nov. 5. The Beavers play two quarterbacks with Bryce Jorgenson (83-187/908 yards/4 TDs/8 INTs)

UTSA vS. mInoT STATe GAme noTeSand C.J. Evans (68-115/849 yards/6 TDs/8 INTs) splitting time under center. RB Tyson Schatz leads the squad with 604 rushing yards on 151 carries (4.1 avg.) and WR Jabari Taylor has team highs of 42 receptions, 613 yards and six scores. Defensively, the Beavers are allowing 25.8 points and 340.2 yards per game.

HoNoRiNg THe SeNioRS: OG/C Mike Sanchez and S Mark Waters will be playing their final game for UTSA on Saturday. Sanchez has appeared in six games along the offensive line this season, while Waters has started all nine contests in the defensive backfield (56 TT/3.5 TFL/3 PBU/1 INT/1 FR).

BLOCK PARTy: UTSA has been one of the country’s top teams when it comes to blocking kicks this season, as it has five blocks in its inaugural season. The Roadrunners have blocked three field goals (Franky Anaya/Erik Brown/Richard Burge), an extra point (Marlon Smith) and one punt (Joseph Lizcano) through the fall’s first nine outings.

MAkiNg THe MoST oF FoRced TuRNoVeRS: UTSA has forced 18 turnovers (11 fumble recoveries/7 interceptions) through the first nine games of its inaugural campaign and the offense has made it count by scoring on 12 of its ensuing drives (9 TDs/3 FGs). The Roadrunners scored a pair of touchdowns at McNeese State following a Cowboys fumble and interception last Saturday. UTSA put points on the scoreboard after each of its five forced turnovers against Bacone (3 FGs/2 TDs) and scored a touchdown following an opponent giveaway in each of the following three games (at Sam Houston/vs. South Alabama/at UC Davis). The Roadrunners also reached paydirt following their two forced turnovers against McMurry.

HAPPy FeeT: Redshirt freshman PK Sean Ianno had a game to remember against Bacone. He booted a career-best four field goals (21, 45, 25, 42) and also stretched his season-opening streak of successful extra points to 15 (now at 24). The Pflugerville native was just as strong on kickoffs, as three of his 10 boots resulted in touchbacks and the Warriors’ average starting field position was their own 16.7-yard line. Ianno kicked another three field goals against Georgia State, including a tying 39-yarder with 24 seconds remaining and the game-winner from 32 yards out in overtime. He has accounted for a team-leading 57 points and connected on 11-of-18 field-goal attempts (average make of 34 yards) this season, including a long of 48 yards against South Alabama.

oNe-MAN SHow: Junior DE Marlon Smith was a one-man wrecking crew against McMurry. Smith not only led UTSA with nine tackles (5 solos/4 assists), including a program-record four sacks, but he also broke up three passes in the 24-21 setback. The 6-foot-6, 225-pounder had another big game at UC Davis when he racked up four stops, 2.5 of which came behind the line of scrimmage, and a pair of sacks. The San Antonio native recorded a career-best 10 tackles against Georgia State and added seven last Saturday at McNeese State. He has registered 40 stops (21 solos/19 assists), including a team-leading 10 for loss and eight sacks, seven pass breakups and five quarterback hurries in addition to a blocked PAT (at Sam Houston State) this season.

TuRNoVeR MAcHiNeS: Redshirt freshman S Nic Johnston and true frosh S Triston Wade have shown a knack for finding the football in their first year. Playing “dawg” in the Roadrunners’ 4-2-5 scheme, Johnson has recovered three fumbles and forced two in addition to picking off a pass through the season’s first nine contests. He also ranks fourth on the squad with 55 tackles (29 solos/26 assists), 7.5

of which have come behind the line of scrimmage. Meanwhile, Wade has forced three fumbles, recovered a pair and also intercepted a pass to go along with 31 stops (21 solos/10 assists) this fall.

“HARd HAT” deFeNSe: Defensive coordinator Neal Neathery’s unit had a solid opening-day performance and the numbers speak for themselves. The Roadrunners, who run a 4-2-5 scheme, surrendered just three points and those didn’t come until the 10:41 mark in the third quarter. Northeastern State managed just 36 rushing yards on 27 carries (1.2 avg.) and it only had 307 total yards in the contest, including a mere 51 on 24 first-half plays. UTSA forced three three-and-outs, allowed just three third-down conversions in 13 attempts and stopped the RiverHawks on both their fourth-down plays. The Birds also recorded three sacks — 1.5 each by junior LB Brandon Reeves and redshirt freshman DT Ferrington Macon — and freshman S Mauricio Sanchez forced a fumble on the first play of the fourth quarter, which was recovered by redshirt freshman CB Crosby Adams for the program’s first-ever forced turnover.

THe kAM MAN cAN: Redshirt freshman WR Kam Jones came into the season as arguably the Roadrunners’ most dynamic athlete and it took all of one play in the season opener for that to be put on display. The Edna native returned the opening kickoff 37 yards to set up the program’s first-ever touchdown (14-yard rush by QB Eric Soza). However, Jones’ play-making ability did not stop there. He caught four passes for 59 yards (all in the opening 30 minutes), including a 3-yard score with 1:26 remaining in the first half. That touchdown was set up by a 38-yard sideline connection with Soza three plays earlier. His 45-yard, third-quarter catch against McMurry set up the Roadrunners’ second touchdown. Jones led UTSA with four receptions for 43 yards and added an 18-yard rush at Southern Utah. The converted prep quarterback recorded seven catches for 103 yards at Sam Houston State to become the first receiver in program history to eclipse the century mark. Jones surpassed that standard again a week later against South Alabama with five receptions for 103 yards, including a 51-yarder that set up a touchdown. The 6-foot, 190-pounder established school records with eight catches and 120 yards last Saturday at McNeese State. He leads the squad with 38 grabs for 567 yards (14.9 avg.) and also is averaging a team-leading 87.7 all-purpose yards per outing.

SeTTiNg SigHTS oN SiNgLe-SeASoN MARk: With an average of 36,151 fans through the first five home games, UTSA has its sights set on South Florida’s modern era inaugural season attendance mark of 33,038 set in 1997. The Bulls drew 231,266 fans for seven home dates in their first campaign. The Roadrunners have seen 180,757 fans — already the second-highest total for an inaugural campaign — come through the doors for the first five of six scheduled home contests. Below are the top five inaugural season attendance averages.

AVeRAge ATTeNdANce RANkS HigH: After drawing crowds of 56,743; 31,634; 33,517; 32,886 and 25,977 for their first five home games, the Roadrunners are averaging 36,151 fans at the Alamodome. That figure betters FCS-leader Appalachian State (28,031) by 8,120. UTSA’s average would rank 67th out of 120 FBS teams.

UTSA 0 7 7 7 21

McNeese State 3 14 0 7 24

LAKe CHARLeS, La. — Andre Anderson rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries and McNeese State held off a late UTSA rally in a 24-21 victory on Saturday night.

After Sean Ianno’s potential game-tying 48-yard field goal was short midway through the final stanza, the Cowboys responded with an eight-play, 69-yard march that culminated with a 29-yard touch-down pass from Darius Carey to Josh Jordan, which put McNeese back in front by 10.

The Roadrunners answered a mere 45 seconds later when Soza con-nected with Jake Wanamaker on a 26-yard strike to make it 24-21, but the Cowboys were able to run off all but seven seconds to es-sentially clinch the three-point win.

Kam Jones set program records with eight receptions for 120 yards and it marked his third 100-yard performance in the last five games.

Meanwhile, Cody Rogers paced the defense with a school-record 16 tackles.

Redshirt freshman Cody Rogers set a school record with 16 tackles in UTSA’s 24-21 loss at McNeese State last Saturday. The San Antonio native tallied seven solo stops and nine assists in his record-setting performance.

Redshirt freshman wide receiver Kam Jones entered this season as aruably the Roadrunners’ most dy-namic athlete and it took all of one play in the season opener for that to be put on display. Recently, the Edna native had an opportunity to speak with Assistant Athletics Communications Director Tony

Baldwin and touched on everything from his move to wide receiver to returning the opening kickoff in UTSA’s first-ever game.

Baldwin: You played high school football at Edna, a 3A school. How have you been able to transition to playing on a bigger stage at UTSA and in the Alamodome?Jones: Coming out of a 3A high school, I didn’t think I would be highly recruited. But, I had a great opportunity to come to San Antonio and play Division I football.

Baldwin: How much of an influence did Larry Coker have in you coming to UTSA?Jones: That was a big influence. He’s been at a lot of very good programs and won a National Cham-pionship. It’s great playing for a coach with so much experience. We always have a legendary coach right behind us.

Baldwin: You played multiple offensive positions in high school. How have you handled moving to wide receiver full-time at UTSA?Jones: I anticipated the move to receiver coming into college. It’s been a good move and I’ve made the best of it. I’ve been a quarterback primar-ily so it was hard move at first. Last fall it was tough, lining up at wide receiver and trying to block someone. But now, I’m getting the hang of it.

Baldwin: Even though you have made the move to wide receiver, we’ve seen you line up behind center in the Wildcat package. Do you feel comfortable when you are back in that position?Jones: It feels like my old high school days. In high school I was a running quarterback, but I could still throw the football. Our offense was pretty much based on the Wildcat so I feel right at home when we get into that package at UTSA.

Baldwin: What was the hardest thing about the full-time move to wide receiver?Jones: The main thing for me was learning how to run routes and get open.

Baldwin: What is your favorite play when you are split out at wide receiver?Jones: It’s a screen. That’s my favorite play because I can get in behind some blockers and make something happen.

Baldwin: Tell me about the first UTSA football game on Sept. 3 when you received the opening kickoff against Northeastern State. What was that experience like for you being the first player to touch the football for UTSA?Jones: It was pretty fun. It was in front of a great crowd and knowing that I was going to get the ball after the coin toss, I had butterflies. It was exciting and I almost took it all the way but the kicker got me.

Baldwin: How big was it for the team to have a record-setting crowd cheering you on in the first game?Jones: We fed off the crowd the whole game. From the coin toss to the end of the game, the crowd really kept us going. It was amazing.

Baldwin: What is the best thing about playing in the Alamodome?Jones: It’s the fans and playing under a dome where you don’t have to worry about weather issues. In the Alamodome, our fans are 10-times louder than any other stadium we play at.

Baldwin: How do you relax away from football?Jones: I play video games. I play Madden a lot to kick back and relax.

Baldwin: What do you listen to in the locker room to get ready and focused for a game?Jones: Ever since my junior year of high school I’ve listened to a song by Lil Wayne. It reminds me of everything I did in high school and it gets me ready to do the same in college games.

Baldwin: Give me one word to describe you on the football field. Kam Jones is…Jones: Unstoppable.
