Through USDA, there is financial assistance available, and my roll with VTFWD is to help private landowners tap into that money and apply habitat practices on the ground. Advice: Getting your name and face out there to the potential employers is very important. Volunteer, intern, anyway you can put a face to a name is very important in the environmental field. Job Description: I serve as the primary contact for requests to/for the dean and assist in coordination of dean's divisional and University-‐wide responsibilities. Provide support in the production of documentation such as strategic planning, annual reports, and other special/time sensitive projects. Prepare and/or edit internal library communications. Advice: Be open to picking up the phone and calling people. Networking is the #1 way to get the job you want. Be persistent; don't get discouraged, keep trying. I knew I wanted to work for UVM and kept applying to positions until I succeeded. As a result of numerous internships and volunteer work I gained skills and hands-‐on experience that complemented my classroom learning. During the past 40 years I have worked in a wide range of fields that include college academic advisor, career counselor, college teacher, writer, and a several years in the non-‐profit and corporate world in Boston and in Vermont. For the past 11 years I have worked as a major gifts fundraiser for the Stern Center for Language and Learning. In addition, I teach at a local college and write a monthly environmental column for my community newspaper. In 2010, I published my first book, Skinny Dipping with Loons, a memoir in short stories and I am currently working on another book with a co-‐author. Job Description: I raise money for a non-‐profit that helps children and adults succeed in learning through providing the tools and strategies needed to become successful learners. I use my writing skills for articles for our newsletter, local newspaper and blog. Part of my work involves organizing fundraising events and to cultivate, steward and ask people and companies for money to support our mission. It is challenging but rewarding work. My love of teaching has offered me an opportunity to teach for over ten years at the local community college. In this capacity, I am able to utilize my expertise in the working world and networking skills to help students gain experiential learning through 80 hours in the field. Writing remains a passion and the more I do it the better I become-‐but it is also hard work! Advice: Networking is key to any job search. I am a huge fan of informational interviewing. Knowing

yourself and having clarity about what you want makes the process much smoother. Be prepared to articulate what you want-‐ it makes it easier for people to help you. Stay positive, as there will be bumps along the way but with persistence, hard work and staying focused-‐you will achieve career success.

So I went through a three-‐step interview process, and eventually signed on with a nationally recognized firm. I got all the appropriate licenses (at my own cost) and went through the training program provided by the company. Eight months later I was the number one advisor in Vermont and had our District Sales Manager asking ME for help in a few areas that I was demonstrating great proficiency in. I left the firm in 2011 and formed my own company.

Job Description: My role is help my clients to better define their own financial goals and objectives, teach them how to work toward achieving them, and be there to guide them if, or when, any changes need to be made. I often help point out potential obstacles that clients did not previously consider, and offer strategies to help reduce or eliminate their negative effect. I need to not only understand the technical, analytical side of their finances, but also the more human side of how their finances affect them emotionally, so I am better able to help create a personalized strategy suitable for the individual human being sitting in the chair across from me. Advice: Be self-‐taught. When you are young you might not have the money to invest to make your future self wealthier -‐ but you usually have the time. Go above and beyond to research your field to know everything you can. Seek out additional certifications or licenses that are valued in your field, and don't be afraid to spend your own money on improving your own marketability. Not only will it give you credentials other candidates won't have, but it will also give you knowledge you can take into any position, and it will demonstrate to your potential employer that you are ambitious and willing to put in the extra effort, even when no one is looking over your shoulder to pat you on the back. Advice: When you go in for an interview don't just try to win someone over so they choose you for their open position. It's just as important for you to size up the opportunity and decide if the job or company is the right fit for you. Be inquisitive and don't be afraid to ask tough questions to help you really align expectations. You and your future employer will both be better off in the long run! I had been interested in web development, and left conservation to do ten years of web software product development at Union Street Media. In early 2012, I joined VEIC as Product Manager and now as Director, Strategic Technology Services. It's been a great opportunity to apply my knowledge of software and business to VEIC's work in energy efficiency and sustainability. Job Description: I manage an eight-‐person team that does custom software development, software integration, and related data and technology work. Oversee the planning and strategy for the software technology and systems VEIC uses to provide energy efficiency programs for states and utilities. Advice: It's not who you know -‐ it's who knows you. Network, network, network! Don't be afraid to ask someone to make an introduction to someone you want to meet. Ask for informational interviews. The worst someone can say is no. And also, don't be shy about selling yourself -‐ if you can't tell a simple story about your strengths and why you will be an asset to your potential employer you are really hurting your chances of getting hired.
