PRESIDENT
I wish to welcome every new club member and, along with our regular players, I wish to thank everyone for a fantastic season. We must always pay special thanks to our sponsors for their financial support and more importantly, for their personal involvement in the development of the club. It is this quality which provided the incentive to push for success on the field in 2011. To see them on the embankment quietly cheering or being heavily involved in the coaching of a team or organising financial assistance for further education sends positive messages to the playing group. The ‘Friends of UWA Rugby’ continue to be a vital component in moving the club forward. UWA Sport and Recreation are valuable sources and resources for uni rugby as they continue to provide management guidance as well as vital financial support. Although always grateful to our present sponsors we must make the most of our present success and broaden our appeal to other sponsors by marketing our brand as one of the top clubs in WA rugby. We also need to thank the handful of past players and other staunch supporters who have stood quietly and often defiantly on the hill during our lesser moments and who, along with others who have returned to the fold, hopefully feel somewhat rewarded having now witnessed stable success throughout the grades. 2011 saw Fourth Grade Black and Blue put their hands up once again under the supervision of Barry Cahill and Damian O’Donnell. Second Grade with Chris Brook at the helm, and later assisted by Malcolm Talmage, surprisingly stuttered through an erratic season, even though on paper it was one of the strongest squads in recent seasons. When they played to their potential they were among the competition’s best. The new look Under 20s with few remnants of the premiership team of 2010, was astutely guided by the placid Colin Richardson and ably assisted by Damian Holden who returned to the coaching fold after several seasons away from coaching first grade premiership teams. He has been bedazzled by the many changes in approach to modern rugby especially the influence of social networking. The Premiers, under the tutelage of Steve McFarland and Gareth Williams, has been the catalyst for the rejuvenated mood within the club ranks. Their patient, structured format has been the basis for an impressive record. The Women’s team have performed creditably due to the presence of women’s rugby stalwart, Sue Roberts, who has successfully merged players from Cottesloe and UWA. Many thanks also for the coaching guidance of Patrick Hanigan during the pre-season and intermittently throughout the season. The highlights of the new coaching format for 2011 saw Luke Scatena, after a very disappointing pre-season injury, offer his services as the rookie coach of Third Grade. Along with Mat Horrocks he nurtured the ‘Mighty Thirds’ into a formidable squad. The major coup was the successful recruitment of two Under 18 squads by the energetic and focused Kathal (Buddha) Spence. He was supported by Thomson Naude, Rick De Franck and James Dunne. ‘Uni’ has turned the tables, especially on the neighbouring western suburbs clubs, as it celebrates the largest membership in WA senior rugby, having teams in all grades. The committee engaged dutifully in their assigned roles and there has been a strong sense of responsibility and energy flowing through the club management all season.
Ross ‘Doppo’ Dopson and Phil Watkinson (Premiers), Anne Wilson (Seconds), Mark O’Toole, Paddy Hanigan (Thirds), Rick Wolters (Fourth Black), Diviij Vijayakumar (U20s), have value-added to their specific roles in their specific teams and the club is indebted. Congratulations to Ted Postal for his selection in the Australian U20s World Cup squad: Bruce Smith-
Wright who got game time during the Force’s early season eastern states tour, and Josh Eisentrager,
Richard Hardwick and Pat McCarthy who participated in the National Secondary Schools Championships,
with Richard and Pat gaining national honours.
Being the lone soul with little support from team scribes, Rick Wolters has struggled to publish The Ruckus newsletter but we are thankful for his commitment to save special club projects, including his role as Club Historian. Our volunteers, although not so numerous as some clubs, are highly valued. The many facets that help a club move forward: committee, sub-committee, Bar/canteen, team management, team support staff, ancillary medical support, are to be commended for their untiring responsibilities. We need to acknowledge the commitment over several seasons by Jay and Stephanie who have now completed their Masters in Physiotherapy as well as the ‘old salt’, Wazza. Recruitment for Premiers saw Dominic, Alan, Fionn, Nathan and Trevor all make huge contributions to the success of the Premier grade. Milestones included Luke Jones (300 + games), Andrew Johnson, Mal Washbourne (150+) Barry Cahill, Tim Davies, Sam Medway and Paul Scalzi, (100+). The obvious jewel in the milestone crown was Damian O’Donnell who celebrated 500 games with one club. Many thanks to his colleagues and to the club for making it a memorable event. We also acknowledged Life Membership for Adrian Goh, Luke Jones and Peter Morton. All clubs rely on volunteers and we need to ensure that we have many in place to ease the pressure on the few regulars who constantly offer their services; whether this be as a committee member on an ad hoc basis, ‘every bit helps’. We must continue to support the development of the junior club as they are vital to our future progress. Thanks to everyone who has made UWA Rugby Club a welcoming venue for a ‘league of nations’ but we need to be reminded that as much as we have finals success in various grades we will only be truly respected as a club if we continue to build on the present success. The green, blue and gold machine is in motion but must become consistent over the long term. Sadly, at the vital end of the Club Championships to determine the club with the best results, we slipped from first place to third, trailing Cottesloe and Nedlands by only a handful of points. The last time we won this was in 1991. Although this is a disappointing position after running so close, the fact that UWA rugby has five teams in finals; Premiers, U20s, U18s, 4th Grade Black and Women’s, has seen such success permeate positively throughout a club which has regained its soul.
CLUB DEVELOPMENT • Communications – Rick Wolters continues to manage our website and it has been a vital link to the club, responsible for many ‘hits’ and follow up contacts. We have acquired several new players through this contact point, especially from overseas. Rick has maintained the front page each week with stories and results of Seniors and Juniors all season.
• Newsletter – Rick took over the editorship of the “Ruckus” this year from Nigel White. This continues to be a vital form of communication for players and serves to keep past players, our alumni, in touch with the Club.
• Juniors – President Dirk Kotzee has overseen another successful season for the Junior Club during 2011. Well done to the many parents who serve on committees and who volunteer their valuable time in a host of activities. Many senior players now coach junior teams and great to see so many players with their children playing in the juniors as well. It was great to have the juniors support senior grades each home game which adds to the connection within the club, and presents a pathway for our juniors that adds to the spectacle of the day. Best of luck with the annual Under 14s tour to Singapore/Kuala Lumpur.
Support Networks; Friends of Uni Rugby; Friends Foundation
The Club appreciates the support of the Friends of UWA Rugby and the financial support of the Foundation. GMS Engineering Scholarship in Rugby GMS entered a unique scholarship arrangement providing financial assistance to two UWA engineering students to assist in playing rugby and studying engineering at UWA. The two players selected were Jonathon Ashton and David Ingram. Great appreciation is extended to Peter Naude from GMS for his generous and invaluable support.
UWA Sports Scholarship This years UWA Sports Scholarship was awarded to Kurt Penney. In appreciation of the scholarship Kurt took on the role of coordinating the UWA Rugby 7’s team for the Australian University Games in Gold Coast. Kurt had a great year scoring 19 tries before an ankle injury hampered the last 5 weeks of the season.
Support Staff
In every Club a lot of behind the scenes work is carried out and the Club is grateful for the commitment and tireless of work of this band of dedicated talented people ranging from office bearers to bar manager to physiotherapists and sports trainers.
Ground Presentation
UWA continues to assist deliver the best playing surface in the Rugby WA competition. UWA Rugby is grateful for the support provided by UWA Sports and UWA Sports Park staff. The overseeding presents the grounds immaculately and holds the playing surface together for the entire season.
TSWA Rugby 7’s
UWA once again hosted the Tertiary Sports WA rugby 7’s. Each of the 5 WA universities were represented. UWA won this event and have qualified 1st from WA to attend Australian University Games to be hosted on the Gold Coast in September 2011. UWA will be striving to go one better from the 2010 Div 1 Silver medal.
Australian University Games
Held in the Gold Coast from 26-30 September. In 2010 UWA finished 2nd to Sydney University. UWA won the Australian University Games and was names #1 University in Australia after winning the Australian University Games as well as Tertiary Sport WA title (for the 11th year in succession).
Indian Rim Asian University Games
UWA Sports cancelled the event this year but UWA Rugby has offered to host an exchange with Singapore Management University.
Easter 7’s
1st Grade had a fantastic start to the season winning the Bankwest Easter 10’s. The Colts were winners of the Cup competition.
UWA Junior Rugby Club
UWA Junior Rugby is scheduled to again tour with the Under 14 to Singapore. This annual event is a
cornerstone for retention and recruitment to the Junior Club.
Recruitment
This year we recruited many new players to the club. There was a large contingent of new 1st grade players who all settled in well. The use of the presentation folders and the Club recruitment cards played their parts as did personal approaches, the Club website, the University’s Orientation Day and Expo Day events and the Club’s notice board on campus at the University.
Sponsorship
Sponsorship was in eh hands of Marketing Manager Tim Davies who once again did an outstanding job. Appreciation once again to Major Sponsor WesTrac Cat and Jim Walker. This support is invaluable and has assisted us in the success we have experience this season.
The Club undertook a unique event in supporting Breast Cancer awareness. 1st Grade played in pink jumpers whilst the remainder for the Club wore pink socks in support.
Major Club Milestone Mixed with the regular achievements of players reaching 100 games was the outstanding achievement of Damian O’Donnell reaching 550 games. The Club went to great efforts to mark this great occasion.
Grand Final
UWA Rugby Club once again hosted the Grand Finals and UWA Sports Park was resplendent in its appearance. There was great support from the army of volunteers to assist with the weekend’s games. It was a credit to the game and to the Club. We look forward to building on this success next year for an even better 2012 season. Boyd HerewiniBoyd HerewiniBoyd HerewiniBoyd Herewini President 2011
CLUB CAPTAIN Hello UNI,
As I have proudly held tenure as UWA Rugby Club Captain over the past two years, everybody involved with UNI has seen
some great changes in our Club. It has been my absolute pleasure to be involved with the fantastic people that have made UNI
such a great place to be in recent years.
The biggest and most important change that we have seen develop over the past couple of years has been the rise and rise of our
Premier Grade squad. Whether or not UNI will be Grand Finalists and/or Premiers in the RugbyWA competition will not be seen
for a couple of weeks still, though what they have achieved to date is fantastic in itself. Genuinely troubling and defeating other
Perth clubs, by confidently stamping our brand on every team we have played, has given our Club pride and forced the respect of
our peer clubs in Perth. There is no premiership yet, so we have not yet achieved our ultimate goal, though the fantastic work of
this group of determined men must be applauded. First Grade, you have done UNI proud, and we will celebrate with you now,
and expect that the high standard of 2011 will never be lowered.
The hard work of Kathal "Buddha" Spence and his team in creating an U/18s Minor Premiership side that play in the Grand
Final next week must be recognised. Buddha has been a strong UNI Clubman through good and bad times, and his work to
attract such a fantastic bunch of young men and their families and friends to our Club will positively impact on our Club for
years to come. A Premiership is hopefully just around the corner for these youngsters, and this is something that will bind them
to UNI forever.
Our U/20s and 4th Grade Black sides have continued their fantastic work in 2011, both perhaps with less hype than in previous
seasons, though definitely still winning well and consistently. It is hugely pleasing to recognise that the bar is so high now, that
winning is an expectation of and from these sides.
Our remaining sides have been performing consistently better than last year. Some new faces in coaching/managing/playing
personnel have bolstered our ranks, and players generally enjoyed their rugby by winning some and losing some, though almost
invariably doing UNI proud. The Second and below Grades down have enabled the success of our First Grade, by providing a
deep pool of players that are willing and able to fill in as required. In doing so, these players gave us a genuine chance of our
first Club Championship in 20 years. 2011 saw a record number of players and teams from UNI, and our successes on and off
the field should only see our participation and competitiveness grow.
The 2010 Ivy League Post-Season Tour, coordinated by Damian O'Donnell, was a huge success in so many facets, not least
linking friendships between blokes from different corners of the Club. The support for First Grade from The Hill from blokes
who play much earlier in the day has swollen in 2011, probably not least because the 4th Graders now want to watch their First
Grade mates play some great rugby. Tours are a unique way for a rugby club to grow, and a fantastic time for the individuals
involved. Reserve your spot now for UWA Rugby Club South America tour 2012!
The relentless hard work of Boyd Herewini at the helm as UWA Rugby Club President is almost universally unknown and
certainly seldom recognised. The sheer volume of time and effort that Boyd has committed to UWA Rugby over years as
President would stagger most of us. This Club would not have seen the successes it has without Boyd’s work in every single
facet of its function. There is not a single person or even team responsible for our successes in 2011, though there is one person
who has overseen absolutely everything: Boyd Herewini. Thank you Boyd.
Other little appreciated volunteers make our Club go around. I will not mention them by name or virtue here, except to say that a
'thankyou' here and there to the bloke filling up the water bottles, washing the jerseys, making phone calls and sending emails,
helping our new players feel welcome, or filling out the paperwork on Saturdays never goes astray. We all volunteer because we
love our Club, and I hope that sometime soon everybody that loves our Club volunteers.
I now hand over the Club Captaincy to Sean Ashton, who has been a fantastic servant of the Club in other capacities for many
years now. Sean is an inspiration to us all, who epitomises loyalty to our Club through thick and thin, and exactly the bloke we
want to hold the First Grade Premiers cup above his head.
Overall; we're going forward. See you all on The Hill. Go UNI!
Samuel Arthur Medway.

PREMIER GRADE
The 1st
XV ended a 39 year drought by winning the premiership against Nedlands.
It was a season that expected much after improvement made in the second part of 2010. Work began shortly after
the end of the 2010 season with player driven activities and fitness. Touch rugby was played each Wednesday night
and beach fitness sessions were held on some weekends. When the pre season kicked off, we had good numbers
and increased depth which boded well for the season ahead. Lloyd Johnson ran a diverse and challenging pre
season program.
This season a 1st
XV KO cup replaced the trial games of the past. This was most beneficial as the 4 x 15 minute
quarters gave us the much needed game time to assist with preparation. A good concept, it was probably 3 weeks
too early. Nevertheless, despite a loss to Cottesloe, we went on to defeat Nedlands and Wanneroo before edging
out Associates in the final to win our first piece of silverware in the 15 man game for many years. It set a good
benchmark for the regular season.
We were fortunate to retain the virtually the entire playing group from 2010 except for Ryan de Franck who went
overseas and Byron Schmidt who returned to South Africa. We also saw the return of Matt Shaw, Ted Postal and
Elliot Drury, and welcomed Nathan Cummins, Alan Kingsley, Rory McCarthy, Mike Innes, Fionn McLoughlin and
Trevor Downes to UWA.
While we began the season with a win over West’s, we went down narrowly in the next 3 games to Nedlands,
Kalamunda and Palmyra. These were all very winnable and though we picked up bonus points, there was some
anxiety in the group. However, such was the closeness of the competition from teams 2 – 10, that we knew a good
run would take us into the top four. After bouncing back with a hard fought win v Wanneroo, and a somewhat
controversial loss v Perth, we embarked on a great run and won the 10 from our next 11 games. There were some
great performances here including a comprehensive defeat of Associates, a win at Cottesloe, a gutsy win in the wet
at West’s and a last gasp drop kick to beat Palmyra. Our only defeat in this period came at the foreshore against
Nedlands where we lost a thriller 34-36. We also had our work cut out to defeat Perth and Wanneroo, but it was
the composure to win in rainy conditions at Rockingham that ensured we secured second spot with two rounds
remaining and our first finals appearance in 22 years.
Despite losing the last two regular games, we entered the finals series with a full and fit squad. A 64- 13 loss v
Nedlands was not what we had anticipated, but we showed great character in defeating Cottesloe 19-18 late in the
preliminary final and then backed this up with a brave15-13 win against the favourites Nedlands a week later in the
Grand Final.
On reflection, throughout the season, we did not always play at the level which we aspired to, and always seemed
to do just enough to win, be it against the bottom or top placed teams. This made for very anxious moments for all
during the season. However, we did make progress from 2010 in many facets this season and we need to ensure
we build on this next year. As we grew in confidence and built some momentum, the belief was always there that if
we played to our potential in finals rugby, the premiership was there for the taking.
On behalf of the 1st
XV, I would like to again thank the Boyd and the Committee for all their hard work behind the
scenes, the UWA ground staff for the excellent playing surface we have, ‘Wazza’ and his medical team of physios,
‘Doppo’ our manager, co coach Gareth Williams for all his hard work, Phil Watkinson for his help on the bench on
game day as well as managing while Doppo was away, and finally all our supporters who loyally turned up week in
and week out. Your noise from the ‘hill is’ not to be underestimated and played a significant role in our grand final
success!
2011 must just be seen as the start. While we are Premiers, in terms of our progress as a playing group we still have
lots of work to do. It is essential that we move forward next season, continue to improve on the field, retain our
current playing group, recruit sensibly to the club to ensure we grow our depth and make sure next season is even
better.

2ND GRADE
CHRIS BROOK
COACH
3RD GRADE
What a great season it has been, finishing 3rd
in the Club Championship and having 5 teams reach the finals. This is
a direct result of the great depth and enthusiasm shown in the club this year.
The ‘Mighty’ 3rds didn’t reach the finals this year but we had a great season nonetheless. In the past our 3rd
Grade
team have been perennial wooden spooners, a fresh start was had this season, with new coaching and management
and a bunch of great guys full of energy who wanted to play for each other week in week out.
If you compare the 2010 season, the 3rds only had 2 wins with no bonus points. In 2011 we finished one position
higher in 8th with 5 wins and a draw and 7 bonus points.
The season got off to a great start with a 24 – 19 win against last year’s grand finalists Wests. This was followed by
3 close losses to teams who all finished above us. These results showed the heart and commitment in the team.
Not disheartened by these the results, in round 5 and 6 we had two great bonus point wins. The next seven rounds
however were tough for us as we struggled to find the form we had started the season off with. Our inexperience as
a team showed as we lacked concentration and old heads on the field but our enthusiasm never waned. Not to be
disheartened by these results, the grit shown in the last few rounds by the guys was a testament to the great
camaraderie amongst the team this year. In the last 5 rounds we had 2 wins and a draw and if only someone could
have stolen the refs whistle in our last game against Soaks that result (28-31) would have gone the other way I am
sure.
There have been many standout performers in the side this year, far too many to mention here, you will just have to
come watch us next season to see what the Mighties can do. To add to the regular standouts, a few new players
joined us at the club this year and learnt from the get go how we play our rugby here at UWA.
I have had many people come and congratulate me on the improvement this side has had this year, I am very
thankful for this but it hasn’t been all my own doing. Credit has to go to the guys out there playing for each other and
club, they are the ones who have done a lot of the hard work, all I have done is bring them all together in a positive
way on and off the field and this has shown in the results we have had this season.
All these positive aspects and hard work throughout the season have not been in vain as they have laid a solid
foundation for the ‘Mighty 3rds’ to have an outstanding season next year and in years to come.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters and fellow clubmen who cheered on the mighties week
in week out. It has been great being a part of the camaraderie shown around the club between the grades this year.
I would also like to say a big thank you to Matthew Horrocks for managing the side throughout the season and Mark
O’Toole for his support and expertise.
Yours in Rugby
Luke Scatena
3rd
Grade Coach 2011
MUZZ BUZZ 4TH GRADE
After developing from 2006 wooden spooners (6th grade) to 2007 Grand Finalists (5th grade) and following that up with
undefeated back-to-back 4th Grade premiership winning seasons in ‘09 and ‘10, it was always going to be a tough ask for the
boys’ to keep their drive and passion going through yet another long, hard season. Even more so given our record placed an
ever-growing bounty on our heads that every other club in the comp seemed determined to claim. Fortunately, the addition of
roster recruits Shaun ‘Hard Knuckle’ Hardcastle, Alex ‘The Mousse’ Mossop, mad Frenchman Fabrice Gregoire, Dick Lively
and the three Andrews – Dopson, James and Johnson – replenished the enthusiasm stocks and brought with it a determination to
add their own chapters to the legacy this team had built over the preceding years.
Tragically, we lost the services of best player AJ, late in the first round thanks to a broken jaw against Cottesloe at Harvey Field.
After having lost 2010 game breaker Ryan Lenegan to a shoulder op and being resigned to the progression of Colin Mackay-
Coghill’s debilitating knee condition, AJ had the wheels out wide to sneak through tiring defences and scoot away for the
inevitable late score that would win games and break our opponents’ hearts. Pace-wise, we had suddenly been brought back to
the pack and coupled with the loss of key premiership forwards Dan Pether and Jonny Wardle, the writing was on the wall that if
we were to produce another successful season, we were going to have to do it the hard way. The fact that most of us were near to
or above 40 years of age would simply make the mountain that much more of a challenge.
By the end of the regular season we had lost only one game to record a third consecutive minor premiership, an achievement that
cannot and should not in any way be underestimated. Somehow the test of playing against significantly younger (and supposedly
tougher) opponents week in, week out - and ones who trained at that – had been enough to keep the boys fronting up to do the
business. And whilst we might not have achieved our victories with quite the same lairy panache as previous seasons, every win
was deserved and hard-earned. And that makes each of them very, very satisfying.
This team has never been about the individual and as such I don’t propose to go through the many great individual moments or
efforts because I would inevitably omit someone due to time, space (or memory) constraints and the last thing I’d want is to
offend anyone or have any member (or supporter) of this truly fantastic outfit feel in any way diminished. Suffice to say, we
would not have achieved what we have achieved without the contribution of each and every one of you. I know who they are,
you know who they are and they know who they are. A sincere ‘thank you’ to each and every one of you.

Barry Cahill
Coach
U/20 COLTS
The UWA Under 20’s team entered the 2011 season as reigning premiers with a core group of six players
remaining in the team. Under the coaching staff of Damien Holden, Colin Richardson and Divij
Vijaykumar the team have become prolific point scorers accumulating 445 points so far in the season with
the nearest rival falling short of the 400 mark.
With a squad that is small in numbers and stature compared to the rest of the finals contenders, the team
has shown great heart to remain competitive at certain stages of the season when numbers were thin. It is a
credit to the team that they remained competitive week in and week and accumulated more bonus points
than any other team in the competition for tries as well as the hard fought losses.
Heading into the last game of the season UWA Under 20’s have secured third spot on the table and are set
to face Associates in the first round of finals to defend our premiership. The team would like to thank the
Under 18’s for their efforts in boosting our bench when required and we look forward to cheering on the
rest of the clubs in September.
COLIN RICHARDSON
COACH
U/18 COLTS SQUAD
The under 18s enjoyed a very successful season highlighted by an impressive list of statistics which are listed later
in this report. But Uni Rugby is not about statistics. This year 53 boys were inducted into Uni rugby. They forged
lifelong friendships, threw the ball around on the field, scored nearly a thousand points, on occasions had to play
two games in a day to make up numbers, backed up other grades (thanks 4ths for making me explain why
mummy's little boy got "Fresh Meat 27" as his fairest and best award), went to social functions where they didn't
have to buy a drink but were forced to swear allegiance to Uni for life. Through all this the boys honoured and
respected Rugby's traditions, played with great courage, skill and discipline and represented the Club with pride.
Without doubt this is the most talented team I have ever had the privilege of coaching. To a player they put the
Teams interests first before their own. They deserve every success they achieve.
Some of the key milestones for the team include:-
- 53 new players and fielded two teams in the under 18 comp
- Won the Minor Premiership
- Contributed 448 Club Championship points
- Nine players regularly represented Under 20s
Some of the key individual milestones include:-
- Alec Wilson, Josh Eisentrager, Richard (Dickie) Hardwick and Pat McCarthy represented the State at
Schoolboys level. Dickie had the honour of captaining the side.
- Richard (Dickie) Hardwick and Pat McCarthy were selected to represent Australia at Schoolboys level with
Richard selected as Vice Captain of that team.
- Conor Spence was selected in the Under 18s State squad
- Kurt Penney was the recipient of the University of Western Australia Rugby Scholarship, made his
Premier Grade debut and was the Club's highest try scorer
- Jono Ashton was the recipient of the GMS Engineering Scholarship
- Nick Wolman was the highest point scorer for the Club
- Troy Bonnet, Jonathon Burley, Kevin Bush, Jack Connelly, Richard Hardwick, Adam Negri,
John Newman, Kurt Penney, Bruce Shaw and Nick Wolman all received Friends of UWA Bursaries.
Congratulations to all those boys on their achievements.
I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the leadership group comprising Kevin Bush, Nick Wolman,
Liam Burke and Jonathon Burley. As leaders they set the tone for the squad. The values they brought to the squad
were respect, discipline, support and humour. They are the reason for the season's success and why it was so
much fun. It would be remiss of me not to make special mention of the inspired leadership of Kevin Bush. Kevin
led the squad from the front with courage and dignity. He was a great support to the coaches and had the respect
and absolute loyalty of the players.
I cannot thank the players who regularly turned out for "Green" team enough. You are the rock upon which our
season was built on. This team reflected all the injuries and unavailability's in the squad. It was their combinations
that always got changed. As an example on July 2 Gold were playing at Nedlands, Green at Perth Bayswater. Due
to Uni holidays and exams squad numbers were short, we only had thirty players for both teams. In the morning
Gold lost a backline player, Declan Shortt was asked to play for Gold. Green suffered two late withdrawals and had
to play with twelve players till half time when two players finished exams. On the same day U20s needed a front
row forward, due to injuries and age restrictions none of the Gold team props could be used. A last minute phone
call was made to Green and Sam Christensen finished his game jumped in his car and drove to Nedlands and played
20s. Declan Shortt also played 20s that day with both players acquitting themselves admirably. I would like to say
this was the exception but it wasn't. To their credit Green was always positive, supportive, provided a mentoring
environment for our developing and younger players, had some of the best training attendance statistics and
contributed valuable Club Championship points. I would like to make mention of four players in particular, Liam
Burke, Stacy Price, Tom Leisk and Dom Cockman. Your selflessness and attitude was the pillar on which the squad
was built and you epitomise all the great values of rugby, thank you.
Rick DeFranck, Thomson Naude, James Dunne and Claire Badenhorst made a diverse but impressive coaching team.
Rick has already coached a premiership winning Uni colts team, is a past Club President and Premier Grade player
for Uni. His experience, knowledge and counsel have been invaluable. Thomson had coached Uni's Under 15s to
great success before being enticed to take on the 18s impresses with his keen rugby brain, enthusiasm and his
ability to motivate. Thomson's love and passion for Uni Rugby is infectious. Dunne is currently doing his PHD at
UWA in Motor Control & Biomechanics and has previous coaching experience in the American Football and rugby
programs at Stanford University. Dunne is also a past Premier Grade player at UWA. James has brought specialist
forwards skills training, a more effective communication structure and with Claire our S&C coach current best
coaching practices in S&C. Claire is doing a BSc(Exercise and Health Science) at UWA. Thank you to all the coaches
for sacrificing your time and contributing your skills to the squad.
I would like to thank: all the players, supporters and officials in the Club who have supported the boys during the
year and taken the time to say a few encouraging words; the parents who loyally turned up week in and week out
to support the boys; Pauline Newman for doing an amazing job on the jumpers; Sarah Evamy and Jack Carlsen for
their great photographs; Doppo, Steve, Garreth and one of our players John Newman for their assistance in
recruiting the squad; Boyd, Anne and the Committee for all their hard work behind the scenes; ‘Wazza’ and his
team of physios; Colin Richardson and the U20s players for their encouragement and time taken to train with us;
Rick Walters for all his assistance and for doing such a great job on the ‘Ruckus’; Uni ground staff for the excellent
playing surface; our sponsors; Justin Shakeshaft, Brett Gallagher and Matt Tink from Rugby WA; the Referees and
our opponents.

WOMEN
UNIVERSITY JUNRIOR RUGBY CLUB
2011 was another very successful year for University Junior Rugby. With a new record total of 210 registered
players, we not only offered playing opportunity for players in every age from u/6 to u/15, but also for the first time
fielded an under 16 squad. This connected the Junior club seamlessly with the seniors, where the u18 and u20 colts
are the first steps toward the open grades.
Much thanks must go the huge enthusiasm of our parents, coaches, team managers, line judges and referees. The
organization from these volunteers allowed for Rugby to be played every game day throughout the season. Our
club values of participation and fairness were pursued by many and I feel that Rugby, with the respect, discipline
and camaraderie which it embodies not only growing at Uni, but also in our city and state.
The committee this year worked hard behind the scenes and good momentum and experience has been
established for next year. The club provides opportunity for all of us to contribute, participate and have fun. The
u14 team has worked hard to prepare for the annual tour to Singapore, with many hours spent on fundraising. Our
links with teams in that region has stood us in good stead and Uni hosted several touring teams this year.
On the home front, especially pleasing is the growing links with the Senior club. Several senior players have started
to make a contribution this year by coaching the juniors, a very well received arrangement. Underlying, there is also
a number of senior club members and even players who now have children in the juniors. I believe that this
facilitates many opportunities in future, not least of which is the very good example that our senior players are
setting.
Our relationship with the RugbyWA and the Western Force remained strong. The Force frequently visited the club
and our players participated in many activities and occasions organized by RugbyWA. Two memorable photos in my
collection: The first shows the huge enthusiasm of a Singapore touring team when the were greeted by David
Pocock and Rory Sidey after playing at McGillivray, and the second our u/6 squad with the world cup trophy at the
clubhouse after one of our training sessions.
Best wishes to everyone for the summer season, and before we know it, we will be together again for the start of a
cracking 2012 Rugby season!
