The Studio Arts and Craft Centre offers engaging classes, workshops, and events within a positive studio atmosphere and is dedicated to the education, enrichment, and creative

fulfillment of all members of the UWM community. The SACC provides open studio space, as well as specialized

studio equipment for ceramics, traditional black and white photography, sewing, metalsmithing, and screen printing. We also offer a variety of supplies for purchase including

clay, photo paper, film and screenprinting inks and screens.

CLASS + WORKSHOP REGISTRATIONParticipants must pre-register for all classes + workshops.Sign up EARLY! Any class with less than four registered participantswill be cancelled and all fees will be refunded in full.Notification of cancellation will occur 48 hours before the start of the class. Class fees vary by subject and duration of the class.Class fees include a membership for the duration of the class. Memberships do not include supplies.

REFUND POLICYIf the Studio Arts and Craft Centre cancels a class, a fullrefund will be issued. If you cancel at least 48 hours beforethe start of a class, a transfer to another class or a raincheck will be issued. Rainchecks are good for one year.

PAYMENTWe accept cash, check, MasterCard or Visa for all transactions.

AGE POLICYDue to safety regulations and the nature of our space, nopersons under the age of 13 are allowed in the Craft Centre, and persons aged between 13 and 17 require parentalsupervision at all times.

CLASSESBASIC WATERCOLOR

Date: Tuesdays, September 18 – October 16Time: 5:30pm – 7:30pm

Join us and create warm and cool paintings!We will be learning basic watercolor principles while creating small beautiful works of art. Make a card for a friend or a painting for your kitchen. Still life arrangements will be provided but feel free to bring in your favorite flowers, photographs or other cherished items.

ARCHITECTURAL TERRA COTTADate: Sundays, September 23 – October 21Time: 12:00pm – 2:00pm

Do you love early Milwaukee’s architecture? Well, let’s learn how those historic ceramic tiles were produced! Come and explore Milwaukee’s architectural history as we learn the processes involved in creating ceramics for building design. These tiles can be used for interior and exterior home installations.

INTRODUCTION TO JEWELRY AND METALSDate: Wednesdays, September 26 – October 24Time: 6:30pm – 9:30pm

Learn the basics of metalsmithing, and create your own jewelry and unique metal objects! We will introduce you to basic techniques including the use of several important tools (jeweler’s saws, torches, files, flex shaft, etc), soldering, cold connections, patina, and finishing. All supplies are included.

BEGINNING POTTERY WHEELDate: Thursdays, September 27 – October 25Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm

There is something so satisfying about drinking from a hand-made cup. It is even more satisfying when YOU have made that cup! Learn the basics of making functional pottery including bowls, mugs and vases in this class. Clay and tools are available for purchase. Glazes and firing are included.

SCREEN PRINTINGDate: Fridays, October 12 – November 9Time: 6:00pm--8:00pm

From t-shirts to posters, the popularity of screen printed graphics never dies! Learn the fundamentals of screen printing, from designing graphics to processing your screen and printing on a variety of materials like fabric, paper, and wood. Students must provide items to print on. Basics supplies are included.

CASTINGDate: Mondays, October 1 – October 29Time: 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Metal casting, the act of pouring molten metal into a mold, can create an array of different objects, both wearable and sculptural! In this intensive five-week course, students are invited to explore the world of organic, plastic and lost-wax casting to create their own one-of-a-kind objects out of Ancient Bronze or Sterling Silver metal. A minimum of one hour out-of-class work is required for the students taking this course to facilitate the production of their artwork.

INTRODUCTION TO BOOKMAKINGDate: Thursdays, October 25 – November 29Time: 6:30pm – 9:00pm

In today’s world, the computer has released the book from its sole duty as tomes of information. In this five-week course, students will explore the creative potential of the book as an art form! This class will encourage the investigation of the fundamental concepts of the book as an artistic medium; as well as teach the basic techniques needed to create artist books. Class will not be held November 22nd.

FIGURES IN CLAYDate: Sundays, October 28 – December 2Time: 12:00pm – 2:30pm

Explore what it means to sculpt the contemporary figure in clay! Instruction will focus on modeling the head and figure from life, building the figure from molds, and creating a life-size bust. Glazes and firings are included in the class fee. Class will not be held on November 25th.

INTRODUCTION TO BLACK + WHITE PHOTOGRAPHYDate: Friday, November 2 – December 7Time: 4:00pm – 6:30pm

Even in the digital age, we are still drawn to the magic of traditional black and white photography. Learn the basics of your film camera, sharpen your composition skills, and start developing and printing from black and white negatives. Students must provide their own camera. Two rolls of film and one package of paper are included in class fee. Class will not be held on Friday, November 23.

NO SWEAT SEWING!Date: Mondays, November 5 – December 3Time: 6pm – 8:30pm

Unique uniforms and uncommon costume, made-to-measure! Learn to sew, No-Sweat! Produce personalized patterns (both busts and bottoms) to suit silhouettes with fresh fabrics or appropriate pre-existing apparel. Texturize your textiles with surface structure. Originate your own ornamental opulence and focus on favorite features!

INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTINGDate: Tuesdays, November 13 – December 11Time: 5:30pm – 7:30pm

Do you admire the beauty behind this traditional medium but are intimated by the process? Well, come and learn the basics of color mixing, paint application, compositional approaches and many other helpful strategies that will lead you on your path to fame. Who knows, you may just be the next Vincent Van Gogh! All supplies included.

WORKSHOPSDESIGNING A PENDANT

Date: Saturday, Sept. 15 & Sunday, Sept. 16Time: 12:30pm – 3:30pm

Come use our metals area and learn basic jewelry making techniques by designing, piercing, sawing, soldering, and finishing your own unique pendant! Be ready to take home a handmade, wearable piece of art in this fun and functional workshop!

ENAMELINGDate: Saturday, September 22Time: 12:30pm – 2:30pm

Enameling is the colorful result of fusing special powdered glass to metal. Students will learn the basic techniques of enameling on copper including preparing the copper, design strategies, powder application techniques, and fusing.

KNITTINGDate: Friday, September 28Time: 5:30pm – 8:30pm

Have you always enjoyed handmade scarves? Come and learn how to start your own! Whether you’re an inexperienced knitter, or just need a little refresher, this course is perfect for you. Learn the basics of knitting while exploring fun ways to create a one-of-a-kind scarf. Please bring two skeins of yarn that are the same color. All other supplies are included in class fee.

This workshop is for anyone who has basic jewelry & metalworking knowledge but wouldlike to learn how to incorporate stones into their work. Soldering experience is required, as we will be using more advanced soldering techniques to attach bezel settings to pre-fabricated pieces. We will be using cabochon style stones (flat bottom, rounded top) in our creations. Students may bring already made jewelry in which they wishto incorporate stones. All supplies included.

INTERMEDIATE JEWELRY + METALSMITHING: BEZEL SETTING

CLASSIC FOX-TAIL CHAINDate: Saturday, October 20Time: 12:30pm-3:30pm

In need of some chain to string your wearables to? Why not make it yourself! In this one day workshop learn how to make and solder your very own jump rings and use them to create a classic foxtail chain necklace that can be used for handmade or found pendants.

GLASS SERIES 1: BEADSDate: Saturday, Oct. 6 & Sunday, Oct. 7Time: 12:30pm – 3:00pm

Interested in glass? Enjoy using your hands to make one-of-a-kind components for Jewelry? Then join us in the first part of our Glass series! It may be just what you need to get started. This specific workshop offers a glimpse into the world of glass bead making. Working with Moretti transparent and opaque glasses, students will be taught general flame-working to create glass beads. Taught by UWM’s own Katheryn Hancock, apprentice to nationally acclaimed glass artists Jeremy Popelka and Stephanie Trenchard. Limit 6.

POWDER COATINGDate: Saturday, November 3Time: 12:30pm – 2:30pm

Are you in the market for a bold piece of jewelry? Perfect! Take this workshop and learn how to add a colorful surface to metal objects and jewelry. Choose from pre-cut shapes andadd a unique finish to make a pendant, bracelet or earrings. Students will gain the knowledge of cutting and filing metal and will then experiment with a powder-coating gun!

GLASS SERIES 2: SCULPTINGDate: Saturday, Oct. 27 & Sunday, Oct. 28Time: 12:30pm – 3:00pm

Ever wondered what it would be like to create a free-standing, small-scale glass sculpture? Then come and sign up for the second course offered in our Glass Series this fall semester! Again taughtby Katheryn Hancock, apprentice to nationally acclaimed glass artists, this workshop offers a glimpse into the world of glass sculpting. Fueledby propane and their own creativity, students will form and shape beautiful sculptures out of Moretti transparent and opaque glass. So come and create a variety of sculptures and take home your own unique glass object in this exciting two-day workshop! Limit 6.

PEWTER CASTINGDate: Saturday, Nov. 17 – Sunday, Nov. 18Time: 12:30pm – 2:30pm

Have you ever been interested in casting metal but felt you didn’t have the time? Then this workshop is perfect for you! Pewter is a unique metal with a low melting temperature that allows you to prepare a mold and cast in just two days. Leave with a personalized piece of jewelry that could possibly be a custom coinor pendant!

DYING WITH NATURAL PLANT DYESDate: Saturday, Nov. 10 & Sunday, Nov. 11Time: 12:30pm – 2:30pm

This 2–day workshop will introduce students to the art of dyeing through the use of natural plant dyes! Students will learn ways to dye fabric in a variety of colors without using toxins! Students will also have the option of adding embellishments and screenprinting the beautifully colored fabrics to create one-of-a-kind home décor or accessories!

COLLAGING WITH NEGATIVESDate: Saturday, Dec. 1 & Sunday, Dec. 2Time: 4:00pm – 6:00pm

Have some old photo negatives lying around or maybe some you’re not so fond of? Come and repurpose them through photo negative alterations and collaging! With creative printing techniques and new skills, you can recycle those leftover negatives and receive in return a beautiful work of art. Bring in your own or we will provide some of ours and enjoy this unique, fun workshop!

During the Open Clay sessions, our resident ceramic specialist will be on hand to give you tips to make the most of what we have to offer. Plus, there will be free clay for members of the Studio Arts and Craft Centre. Don’t forget: all current UWM students have a free membership – just stop by and sign up.

MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM- PRINT EXPLORATIONSDate: Monday, September 3Times: 1:00pm – 5:00pmIf you’re a student member, come and guarantee yourself a spot in our trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum! We will be taking 30 students on Labor Day to relax and enjoy the exquisite Posters of Paris Exhibit, and for a special showing of the museum’s permanent print collection! Come look for us near Chapman Hall during the Pantherfest pre-show and we will adorn your end-of-summer skin with temporary embellishments utilized by many Middle Eastern cultures since the Bronze Age! WOVEN JEWELRYDate: Friday, October 5Times: 5:00pm – 8:00pmStudents will create matchless woven pieces! Learn how to make a handmade loom – construct it, string it, weft and warp it. The basics of weaving will be taught on these handmade looms. Leave this workshop with a piece of jewelry, belt, bookmark or small woven tapestry.

VINTAGE JEWELRYDate: Friday, November 16Times: 5:00pm – 8:00pmLearn how to repurpose vintage costume jewelry into newly crafted earrings, necklaces or bracelets. Also experiment with the art of resin and incorporate small treasures into a set of earrings or a pendant. The resin must set overnight – be prepared to pick up pieces the next day!
