Today we welcome Moneyfields to Honeycroft for our penultimate home game of the season. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all the players, staff and spectators from The Moneys along with our Match Referee Graeme Ions and his two assistants Notis Liappis and Adam Osbourne, we hope you all have an enjoyable stay and a safe journey home. We met Moneyfields on 28th November 2017, at the time Moneyfields were unbeaten in the league. Tony sent out a full strength team leaving with all three points in our back pockets after an exiting 3-2 victory, our goals were scored by Dylan Kearney and a Moneyfields own goal. The Moneys have now settled just above mid table, which is a great result in their first season at this level. Moneyfields have played three matches in the past seven days, losing at home to table toppers Beaconsfield Town, winning away to Egham Town and winning at home to Arlesey Town. Last weekend we visited Hartley Wintney where we shipped four goals for the third time in three matches, this weekend Tony and his team will be looking to sure up our defence whilst maintaining our attacking threat. Our last home match of the season will take place on Monday 23rd when we welcome Marlow to Honeycroft. Let’s all get behind the team and cheer them onto three points.

The club began its current incarnation back in 1987. Having reached to upper age group in the Portsmouth junior, a group of players decided to continue playing as Portsmouth Civil Service reserves.

Gradually most of the players moved up to the rest team and by 1991 the side had risen from the Portsmouth League to Hampshire League division one on the back of three successive promotions. The club's league success was matched in cup competitions with Portsmouth Senior Cup wins in 1991 and 1992, and Hampshire Intermediate Cup victories in 1992 and 1993.

After several seasons in the upper reaches of the Hampshire League, it became apparent that the club would have to move away from their home at Copnor Road if they were to progress. After scouring the city, the club agreed a lease on the old Moneyfields sports ground in Copnor, and so, in 1994, it moved to its current ground and became part of the club whose name they now carry.

The Division One years were particularly successful and under the management of George Wain and Mickey Gee, Moneys never finished lower than sixth and clinched the 1996/97 league championship by 15 points.

Success on the field was matched by extensive ground developments off it thanks to a national lottery sports fund grant. New changing rooms, offices and a floodlit all-weather pitch were constructed as part of the scheme to bring the facilities up to Wessex League standard.

With the requisite developments in place, the 1997/98 campaign saw a tense battle with Blackfield and Langley to see who would claim a spot in the Jewson Wessex League. Although Blackfield just pipped them in the table, Moneyfields' better facilities meant it was they who claimed promotion. The rest season in the Wessex league saw the club surprise many people by finishing sixth. The next couple of seasons saw the club post respectable top-ten finishes, but, after finishing a disappointing sixteenth in 2000/01, Messrs Wain and Gee decided to step down after

13 seasons in charge.

Under the managerial partnerships of Calvin Hore and Terry Arnold/Paul Gregory, and Craig Stafford and Miles Rutherford, the club has established itself in the middle third of the table as well as embarking on a series of runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase.

The management line up was boosted in 2004/05 by the arrival of Bobby De St Croix and Alan Smith from Havant and Waterlooville. Where the duo management led us to mid table, for two seasons and getting to the final of the Portsmouth Senior Cup in 2005/06 losing 4-3 to Gosport Borough at west Leigh Park.

And in 2006/07 finishing 3rd round of the FA Vase against AFC Totton 2007/08 Saw the sudden departure midseason of Craig Stafford, leading a season to finishing 7th in the league as well as being runners up in the league cup from Wimborne town who beat us up by 1-0 and reaching the 2nd Qualifier in the FA Cup against Team Bath.

2008/09 saw Moneyfields best start to the season leading the remaining 21 teams for a short period of me, and seeing young Connor Bailey scoring Moneys 100th Goal of the season. The Season ending positively with the first team and reserves both finishing third in the table

2009/10 saw Moneyfields, worst season at home, with only 5 home wins all season leaving the club in 12th place, with the Reserves ending in 4th place. After five seasons of Moneyfields glory Bobby St Croix retired as manager and was replaced by former manager Micky Gee‘s son Graeme who has also been a very loyal player to the team over the years.

2010/11 Season saw us finishing seventh, in the Wessex Premier, with Warren Hunt setting a club record of 35 goals in a season, beating previous top season goal scorer Lee Moulds. The reserves finishing Fourth In the Wessex Combination, The reserves lost 1-0 in the final of the Portsmouth Senior Cup against Horndean.

2011/12 Season saw us finishing fourth in the Wessex Premier with former AFC Bournemouth player Steve Hutchinson finishing top goal scorer of the season with 34 Goals. The Reserves finished fourth in the newly formed Wyvern Combination Football League Premier Division The reserves lost for the second year in the row in the Portsmouth Senior Cup Final against United Services, being hosted at the glorious Fratton Park Grounds losing 4-3.

2012/13 finalists in the Portsmouth Senior Cup ended when the Club won the trophy in 2013.

2013/14 were losing finalists in the Portsmouth Senior Cup

2014-15 season saw us finishing fourth in the Wessex Premier League and reaching second round FA Vase.

2015-2016 Saw Moneyfields manager Miles Rutherford resign after 12 years being replaced with Dave Carter from Horndean as manager in October then finishing eighth in the Wessex Premier League and seeing Moneyfields reach the fourth round of the FA Vase and seeing the reserves finishing second in the Wyvern Combination Football League Premier Division.

2016/17 Moneyfields finished top of the table in Wessex Premier for three days after that the FA took three points away for playing an illegal player giving the title to Portland Utd.

Moneys still got promoted to Evo-Stik Southern league East Division for the 2017-18 season.

The Evo-Stik League South East title race is still wide open after the top four all won on Saturday, leaving just four points separating them. Beaconsfield Town slipped into top spot on Thursday and remain a point ahead after winning 4-2 at Moneyfields. Jerome Eccleston and Tony Mendy gave Town a two-goal lead by the 16th minute, with Joe Briggs reducing the arrears in the 23rd minute. Kezie Ibe made it 3-1 in the 34th minute, only for Sam Pearce to pull Moneys back into the game 10 minutes after the break, but a Lee Barney goal in stoppage time settled the game in Beaconsfield`s favour. Second-placed AFC Rushden & Diamonds were looking to get back on track after four successive draws. A terrific crowd of 626 on a `pay what you want` day saw them ease to a 4-1 win against Aylesbury United, leading 2-0 at the break through Ryan Robbins and Spencer Weir-Daley. A Liam Dolman own goal gave the Ducks hope in the 63rd minute, but Joe Curtis on 75

2

minutes and Tom Lorraine 2 minutes from time sealed a comfortable win for the hosts. Hayes & Yeading United have only two games left so need a massive shift of form to see them take an automatic spot, although a 6-1 home win over Egham Town won`t do their chances any harm. Manny Duku bagged a brace, Tommy Smith, Sahr Kabba, Spyros Mentis and Duncan Culley singles, with Mitchell Wiseman having equalised for the Sarnies in the 31st minute. Hartley Wintney are still in with an outside chance and have four games left and trail by four points after a 4-0 home win over Uxbridge, courtesy of a Nic Ciardini hat-trick and one from Dean Stow from the spot. AFC Dunstable and Cambridge City occupy the other play-off spots but shared a 2-2 draw at Creasey Park in which the home side led 2-0 through BJ Christie and Leon Cashman by the 16th minute. Ryan Sharman reduced the deficit on 71 minutes and then

3

8 minutes into time added on at the end of the game James Hall hauled City level. Chalfont St Peter still have a chance of catching the top six, but a 1-1 draw at home to Kempston Rovers didn`t help their hopes as they are five points behind City with four games to go. They almost got nothing from the game though as Josh Crawley gave the Walnut Boys the lead with only 9 minutes to go before George Fenton rescued the Saints in stoppage time. Who goes down is still, remarkably, open – just! Arlesey Town`s 3-2 defeat at home to Hanwell Town leaves them 15 points behind Barton Rovers with 18 points left to play for. Arlesey led 2-0 as well, thanks to Keanu Williams and Ashley Farooqui by the 32nd minute, but crumbled after Calum Duffy pulled one back 18 minutes from time, conceding two more from Dan Fleming and Goldy Capela.

4

Barton suffered a 5-2 defeat at Thame United, whose Lynton Goss grabbed a hat-trick and Dan West a brace – Andrew Phillips and Michael Gyasi replying. Elsewhere, Brad Wilson`s 9th minute penalty earned Fleet Town the points at Calthorpe Park against Northwood. Saturday’s game between Marlow and Ashford Town (Middx) was postponed due to a lack of home team players present at the Alfred David Memorial Ground at kick-off time. At around 1.45pm, with only one member of the Marlow playing squad at the ground, manager Mark Bartley was trying to make contact with the players who had previously been advised of their selection to establish their whereabouts but was unable to make any contact by telephone or received text replies of “not available”. Neither the club nor manager had been made aware of anything untoward prior to this time.

Page 19: Uxbridge vs Moneyfields - s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com · Email: sec@uxbridgefc.co.uk DIRECTORY ... JOEL JACKSON Joined Moneys in ... Phil Davie, Mark Bantock or Alan Holloway Unit

5

The match officials and Ashford Town (Middx) officials were immediately apprised of the situation as was the Southern League. Time was given to see if the situation could be resolved but at 3pm with the situation unchanged Marlow confirmed that they were not in a position to fulfil the fixture which was consequently postponed. The club and the manager are trying to establish further details of why this happened. Marlow apologised to the Southern League, Ashford Town (Middx) the match officials and all those who attended the ground or who were affected or inconvenienced by this issue.

CHANGING FACE OF MATCH OFFICIALS

Previously there has been a perception of who a referee is and what they look like – now they come from all walks of life and backgrounds. We meet our new Level 3 referees every July. You could line those

6

90-100 people up in any walk of life and you wouldn’t necessarily pick them out as referees. They are young, many from BAME backgrounds and more and more females – probably not what you’d expect 20 or 30 years ago. People are really seeing refereeing as a career where they can really achieve. This could either be at the elite level, where it can be a full-time career, or taking charge of games in front of big crowds, even in Non-League football. People really aspire to take charge of important games where they can have a really positive influence. Every game matters to players, managers, clubs and supporters – but also referees. If they have ambition to progress, they know they also need to perform. One bad decision could change your season. Just like promotion and relegation for clubs, it’s the same for officials. For every game someone referees, there are two marks – one from each club. There are also observers out watching and

Page 20: Uxbridge vs Moneyfields - s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com · Email: sec@uxbridgefc.co.uk DIRECTORY ... JOEL JACKSON Joined Moneys in ... Phil Davie, Mark Bantock or Alan Holloway Unit

7

that is put into an Observers Merit List. The two are compared and more often than not, are not too dissimilar. If you’re showing in a season you are consistently one of the best referees, you have a good chance of promotion. It’s much like a player culture. If you prove you are good enough you will get an opportunity at the next level. Why should you be held back if you’re the best National League North referee even if you are in your early 20s? Similarly if you’re 52 – just because you have less active years in front of you, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to progress up. It gives service to competition and also rewards the referee.

FROM NON-LEAGUE TO THE WORLD CUP FINAL

The National League System structure in this country provides an unbelievable learning experience for English match officials. As a country we are blessed we have this 150-year-old structure that has

8

effected itself now into such a strong Pyramid. In the ninth tier of football in this country can mean refereeing in front of 1,000 people. In other countries the ninth tier could be a local park. So it’s real credit to the structure, the clubs, the teams and the players for providing such good quality for referees to get such good experience at what can be an early stage of their career. You grow with the Pyramid. We always use Howard Webb as the example. Like every referee we now see in the Premier League, he came through the National League System. He was in charge of Northern Counties East games, the Northern Premier League and so on. In 2010, he took charge of the World Cup Final between Spain and Netherlands.

INCREASE IN APPOINTMENTS AT

STEP 3 & 4 With the additional Step 3&4 divisions being introduced into

Page 21: Uxbridge vs Moneyfields - s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com · Email: sec@uxbridgefc.co.uk DIRECTORY ... JOEL JACKSON Joined Moneys in ... Phil Davie, Mark Bantock or Alan Holloway Unit

9

the National League System next season, it brings an increase in the amount of appointments that will have to be made. The appointments at those levels are made by the FA. We have a Northern Appointments Officer and a Southern Appointments Officer, who make a vast amount of appointments and re-appointments each season. A Level 3 referee, who takes charge of Step 3 and 4 matches, will on average have between 30 and 40 appointments per season. Some will also act as assistants on the National League as well as the National League North and South divisions. But just taking Steps 3 and 4, it will increase by two or three games per referee. That might not sound much, but if you times that by 330 Level 3 referees it soon adds up. Every April and May, we have a calculation that looks at the amount of fixtures we’ll have the next season, geography, the average availability time of any

10

Level 3 referee – work commitments, the average injury time, availability over Bank Holidays, Christmas and New Year – and gives us a number of how many referees we need.

EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT

This is a side that, naturally, people don’t always see. We at The FA, alongside the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), have made a vow to offer more training, education and development for match officials. Not only does it service the game at Steps 4, 3, 2 and 1, it’s also planning for the Football League and Premier League officials of the future. So, who is going to be the next Howard Webb refereeing the World Cup final? FA CORE (FA Centre of Refereeing Excellence) is comprised of around 300 referees and 50 performance coaches. A number are referees at the top level while others are retired. It is designed to enhance the training and development

Page 22: Uxbridge vs Moneyfields - s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com · Email: sec@uxbridgefc.co.uk DIRECTORY ... JOEL JACKSON Joined Moneys in ... Phil Davie, Mark Bantock or Alan Holloway Unit

11

given to the officials identified as a having potential to progress. If you’ve got someone on the phone three or four times a week, your chance of becoming a better referee is enhanced. Hopefully leading to better chances of promotion. Over the past three years in England we’ve also taken on specialisation – people are now focusing on being a referee or an assistant referee. By people making that commitment, it says to The FA that we need to invest in them. Previously people may have wanted to keep their status as a Level 3 referee and take charge of, say, Wingate & Finchley, but only so they could run the line at Leeds United the week after. Nowadays it’s, ‘I’m refereeing at Wingate & Finchley because I want to’.

IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS

Previously a referee has been seen as out on their own, working in silos. When you actually sit down and explain to clubs what we’re trying to do and the positive

12

impact the work with referees has, they are very receptive to it. For the first time this year, we’ve offered visits to all clubs at Step 1 to 4. A member of The FA or PGMOL will go and talk about what’s topical, what laws have changed and explain to clubs how they can really help themselves. It’s also an opportunity for clubs to offer their thoughts on things they may be confused on or bits of law that they have queries on. We also attend the National League, Isthmian League, Northern Premier League and Southern League pre-season meetings. It’s vital there is a two-way relationship.
