ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Letter From The Rector The Rev. George Adamik

APRIL 2011 VOLUME 36, ISSUE 3

ST. PAUL’S LETTER

Dear Friends,

Lenten Journey Thoughts

My whole spiritual journey has been

so powerfully shaped by the words of

Thomas Merton, in particular his

thoughts on the discovery of the ―true

self.‖ I recently came across a phrase of

Richard Rohr which expresses it in a

kind of catchy way. Jesus gives us ―real

eyes‖ to ―realize‖ where the ―real lies.‖

I would like to invite you during this

Lenten and Easter season to develop

your ―real eyes.‖ There is so much in

life that distracts us from the ―real.‖ So

often the distractions become the real

for us and lead to emptiness and

loneliness. Jesus suggests a way of

seeing that opens us to the real. Please

look through this newsletter and

discover both liturgical and educational

opportunities that will invite you to

consider seeing with the ―real eyes‖ of

Jesus.

Children and Youth

As we move through this interim

period of staffing for our children and

youth programs I want to update you

about where we are in our process.

There have been meetings with the

Children’s Ministry Committee and the

Youth Committee as well as the Youth Council. These meeting have been focused

on looking at where we find these programs now, and where we would like them to

be.

With the information gathered we are looking at the staffing requirements to

support these needs, including the number of hours necessary for these positions.

As we come to the conclusion of our stewardship campaign we are also looking at

what funding will be available to support the staffing needs. A Search Committee

is being formed to take the information gathered and begin a process of

advertising and interviewing. Recommendations will be made to me with final

hires made, hopefully in the summer.

Please keep this process in your prayers as we move ahead in this exciting

time for our children and youth programs.

George

Warden’s Corner For me, Lent is a time for

introspection and prayerful reflection. It

also means Spring is coming, and longer

days. Not to mention wondering what I

am going to give up for 40 days. Hard

pretzels are hard to give up! This month,

the stewardship drive comes to

conclusion and will be celebrated March

25th. We are short of our goal by a fairly

substantial amount. At the same time, the

current stewardship cycle comes to

conclusion – your pledge made in 2010

should be honored if at all possible by

March 31st. We have heard many

wonderful stories from the clergy and

fellow parishioners about their

experiences with giving and receiving in

return. Our vestry goals are ambitious,

and we listen to your voices and requests

regarding what you want St. Paul’s to

become. The vestry

wrestles regularly with issues

about staffing, utilities, campus

improvements, security, repairs,

youth programs, music programs,

external demands for increased giving,

starting new ministries and sustaining

existing ones, etc. We hear you, and we

want to respond. And the vestry and

clergy respond by carefully allocating

the gifts that are prayerfully given by

you, the parish. At this time of year, at

this time of reflection and sacrifice,

please consider pledging for the new

cycle, and honoring your pledge from

the prior cycle, so St. Paul’s can continue

on our path of dynamic growth and

support for you.

We rejoice in the births of twins,

James Carter Gossin and Natalie Reed

Gossin, children of Daniel and Ashley

Gossin.

We express our sympathy to the

Magee families’ on the death of their

mother and grandmother, Catherine

Magee; to Mary Hemperly for the death

of her father, John Foley; and to Steve

and Avis East for the death of their friend,

Richard Davis.

The mission of the Volunteer

Coordination Committee is two-fold: to

support the ministries and committees of

the parish and to help individuals learn

about and connect with those ministries

which feed their unique talents and desire

for service.

As part of our mission to support

ministries, we will be offering helpful tips

and reminders for ministry leaders.

On April 20, the Elderberries will

visit the J.C. Raulston Arboretum, located

not far from the Fairgrounds. The

Arboretum is a research and teaching

garden, largely maintained by N.C. State

University students, faculty, volunteers,

and staff. There is no charge to tour this

nationally acclaimed beauty spot, and

parking space is plentiful. It is hard to

think of a more fitting way to welcome

Spring than to spend an hour or two in

one of the most botanically diverse and

beautiful natural settings in America. All

are invited to attend. Watch the bulletin

for more information.

teaming up to sponsor a tour of

Replacements Ltd. Replacements Ltd. is

a business located east of Greensboro

that has the world’s largest selection of

old and new dinnerware. Do you have

your grandmother’s china or your mother

-in-law’s crystal but are missing pieces

you would like to have? This is the place

where you can find just that piece!

Anyone at St. Paul’s who is interested in

going on this tour is welcomed.

We will meet at the St. Paul’s parking

lot at 11:00 a.m. and will stop and have

lunch on the way. We will tour the

facility (tours are given every 20

minutes) and shop for a while. We plan

to be back at St. Paul’s around 5:00 p.m.

Sign up on the poster located in the

narthex so we can coordinate the

MINISTRY LEADER REMINDER-OF-THE-MONTH

Is your committee planning a fund-raiser? A limited number of fundraising events are approved each

year. Planning ahead is key. It’s not too early to begin plan-ning for fall events. In fact, sooner is better. And don’t for-

get… All fundraising requests must be submitted to the Ves-try’s fundraising committee for approval. Fundraising policies and applications are available on the St. Paul’s web site under

Ministry Resources.

The Women’s Study Group will meet

next on April 12th from 12-1:30 to discuss

Three Gospels by Reynolds Price, the

acclaimed NC writer who taught at Duke.

This book studies the Gospels of Mark

and John and also a new Gospel written

by Price himself. One reviewer said,

―Mr. Price inspires a passionate study of

the Gospels, not to disprove or make

intellectual arguments, but to enter more

deeply the divine mystery of Jesus’ life,

death, and resurrection.― This should

prove to be a timely study during the

season of Lent. We would love to have

you join us. For more information,

contact Leah Dail ([email protected]).

As of last month, our total recycling

efforts have amounted to 2,600 chip bags

and 2,842 juice pouches! This is an

outstanding effort. Unfortunately, our

cookie wrapper donations have only

amounted to about 300 wrappers – but

we can’t ask you to eat more cookies, can

we? We will ask, however, that you keep

recycling, especially during the Spring

months when all of the sports teams take

to the fields and consume every snack

imaginable! If you want to help, the

items we are recycling are below.

Please note that we can only take the

brands listed. While you may have other

trash made of similar materials to the

listed products, we can only recycle the

brands noted below .

Currently, we are looking to recycle:

1) juice pouch containers (all brands); 2)

cookie wrappers (snack and full size) –

ONLY Keebler products and Nabisco

products including: Chips Ahoy! Nutter

Butter, Oreo, Mallowmars, Fig Newtons,

Nabisco 100 Calorie Packs, Oreo

Cakesters; and; 3) ONLY Frito-Lay chip

bags (all sizes) including Lays Potato

Chips, Doritos, Fritos, Cheetos, Tostitos,

Sun Chips, Rold Gold Pretzels and any

other Frito-Lay product.

There are two plastic collection bins

located inside the Education Building at

the side entrance next to the restrooms.

Please leave your recyclable snack

packages in the bins at any time. Thank

you for thinking GREEN.

Women Welcoming Women (WWW) is

a women’s organization at St. Paul’s that

celebrates women of all ages and stages

and provides them with the opportunity to

socialize together several times throughout

the year. Each social gathering is intended

to be a relaxing evening out without any

pressure to commit or to volunteer.

Our first event for 2011, hosted by

Betty Charlton and Susan Coulter, was a

great success. With the assistance of our

music director for the evening, Susan

Gilbert, we played a rousing game of

―Name that Tune‖ and warbled our way

through a couple of songs. A great evening

was had by all.

As of now, there are no further events

planned for WWW this year. We have not

had any volunteers commit to ―host‖

additional events in 2011. Hosting duties

are not time consuming and take only the

slightest imagination to plan. If you think

you might want to host a WWW event,

please respond to Sherri Hubbard at

[email protected] as soon as

possible.

In addition, WWW is looking for a new

chair to lead this ministry. This is an easy

ministry to chair as there are no meetings,

no particular time commitments. This is a

social group and the chair’s job is to

provide the women of St. Paul’s an

occasional opportunity to socialize! If you

are looking for a way to share your time

and talent and socializing is at the top of

your list of things to do, please contact

Sherri Hubbard.

We have had a busy March as the

children celebrated Mardi Gras, Dr.

Seuss’s Birthday, had Class Picture Day

and Hot Lunch for the 3, 4, and 5 year

olds. We closed out the end of the month

with conferences for our ―old‖ children,

the 4 and 5 year olds. Time is passing so

quickly it is hard to comprehend that

school will be out in 1 ½ months. The

children have grown so much this year

and we are proud of how hard they have

worked. In April, our classes will be

hard at work on preparing for Easter.

This will be a crazy fun time as we work

hard to accomplish many activities

before Spring Break. Preschool will be

closed for Spring Break and Easter from

Monday, April 18th – Monday, April 25th-

reopening on Tuesday, April 26th.

Our enrollment for the 2011-2012

school year is shaping up nicely. We still

have a couple of spaces available in our

2, 3 and 4 year-old classes. Please send

friends and neighbors our way if they are

looking for a preschool.

The Summer Fun program will be

accepting applications from non-

preschool families after March 28th.

Please call the preschool office at 467-

3788 to see availability.

VBS-A Beach Bash! Are you ready for some fun in the

Son? Then dive into St. Paul’s Vacation

Bible School where we will have a beach

blast! Children will have a great time

hearing stories, singing songs, creating

crafts, and playing games. But most

importantly, they’ll discover just how

much God loves them. VBS will be held

July 18-22, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. -12:00

noon. All children from age 3 through

rising 5th graders are welcome; St.

Paul’s affiliation is not required to

participate. We are looking for

volunteers who would like to help with

the fun. Please contact Christine Ingram

for volunteer opportunities. Registration

forms for all children and volunteers are

in the narthex and on the church website

Communion Classes and Celebration Over 30 children are

attending St. Paul’s three

week communion class

series, taught by our clergy.

The children are learning

about baptism, the history of

the Last Supper, and about

the Eucharist. We look

forward to celebrating the

completion of the communion

classes with the participants on

April 3, where they will be

recognized at the 9:00 a.m.

service. A festive coffee hour

will follow and all are welcome

to attend .

Annual Easter Egg Hunt-we need CANDY! On April 24, Easter Sunday, St.

Paul’s Children’s Ministries will host the

annual Easter Egg Hunt during the

Sunday school hour. No Sunday

school will be held so that all the

children can participate in this

exciting event. If the weather

cooperates, we are hoping to have

our hunt outside this year! To help

with the hunt, we are in need of

small (to fit inside plastic eggs),

individually wrapped candies. We

would also welcome stickers, tattoos,

silly bands and small toys or trinkets that

are church/Easter oriented. Please drop

off all candy donations in Room 2 of the

education building. You may leave your

donation outside Room 2 if the door is

locked. Or, you may bring the candy to

Christine Ingram in the church office.

Thank you!

Children’s Stewardship Since last June our children have

been steadily building up their

stewardship fund and now have over

$1200 to ―spend‖ on their chosen

charity. Our 5th graders chose

Episcopal Relief and Development as

their charity for this year and have

decided to use that money to buy 1 cow,

1 pig, 1 goat, 5 clean waters (5 people),

1 Roving Health Clinic (1 person), and

12 mosquito nets and training. What

wonderful gifts these will be to people in

need! Thank you to our children for

their continued generosity!

Family-Friendly Stations of the Cross On April 22, 2011, Good Friday, a

family-friendly Stations of the Cross

service will be held in the church at

noon. We will have a brief reading and

response at each station. Child care will

be available in Kid’s Club for our littlest

parishioners.

Pre-EYC 5th graders to visit EYC On May 1st, we are inviting pre-

EYC’s 5th graders to visit the middle

school EYC. This is an opportunity for

your 5th grader to get a taste of what

EYC has to offer. We will be meeting in

the youth wing and playing Guitar Hero

from 4:00-6:00pm. The meeting will

include dinner. We hope the 5th

graders will be able to join us for the fun

evening!

Mite Boxes On Easter Sunday, children will be

invited to bring their mite boxes forward

as an offering to God and to benefit

Episcopal Relief and Development,

specifically for the NetsForLife program.

NetsForLife provides mosquito nets and

training for people in Africa. Each net

costs $12 and, on average, 3 people

sleep under each net. We look forward

The EYC continues to support Kiva

through continued donations and the re-

lending of money that has already

been invested. Because Kiva is a loan

organization, we have the benefit of

being able to continually re-lend

money as it is repaid. As we have a

large amount of money invested in

Kiva and being actively loaned, the

EYC has decided to take the Bishop’s

Nets For Life challenge as their own. St.

Paul’s EYC has set a goal of funding a net

Outreach

As you reflect during this Lenten

season, please remember Bishop

Curry’s 2011 project to provide

chemically treated mosquito nets for

those in sub-Saharan Africa, where a

child dies from malaria every 60

seconds. Each parish is challenged to

provide one net for each adult

confirmed congregant. Each net can

provide protection from mosquitoes

during the night for three people, often

women and children. For St. Paul’s that

equates to approximately 540

nets. At $12.00 a net, it surely

is a reachable goal.

speak with Rob Varner, Susan Gilbert, Olivia Ittoop Delahaye, and Katy O’Brien. St.

Liturgy

In the summer of 1965, forty six years

ago, Catherine Williams, a charter

member of St Paul’s, donated the bell in

memory of her grandfather, Edwards

Stokes Fishbourne Sr. The bell was

mounted in a cupola that the parishioners

built on the first church building. The

metal church building had been

constructed in 1960. It was affectionately

called ―The Tin Building.‖

For sixteen years a child was

selected for each Sunday church service

to have the honor of ringing the bell to

call the parishioners to worship. In 1981

the second church building, the current

chapel, was built. The bell and the Cross

from the top of the cupola of the old

building were placed in storage.

Today, if you walk from the parking

lot to the courtyard and you look up as

you enter, you will see a tower in front

of the chapel. You will see a metal roof

supported by two posts surrounded by a

brick base. Below the roof is a cross

mounted on the base between the two

posts. The roof, cross, and brick mirror

the roof, cross, and brick of the chapel.

The metal roof reminds us of the Tin

Building. Walk over to the tower and you

will see the bell mounted between the

posts under the roof. This is the Bell

Memorial. The Bell and Cross were on

St. Paul’s first church building, the Tin

Building, constructed by the

parishioners.

On June 12 of this year, during the

courtyard dedication, the Bell Memorial

will be dedicated to the founders of St.

Paul’s.

At the Easter Sunday services, after

thirty years, the bell will ring out to the

Glory of the Resurrected Lord, to call the

parishioners to worship.

Courtyard Changes Pause for Easter This season of Lent offers a unique

opportunity to set aside the ―busyness‖

of life, and to reflect. As we pause our

work during April, we encourage you to

linger in the Courtyard and enjoy the

many views.

The Courtyard transformation is

being funded entirely through a $5K

donation from 2010 Lobsterfest

proceeds, and the generous gifts of time,

talent and treasure from parishioners.

We will continue the transformation as

funds become available.

How can you help?

Contribute to the effort: Your financial contributions to the Courtyard Fund

will allow us to: address the courtyard

entry way; install high-efficiency

lighting; create a lattice surround for

the Parish Hall HVAC area; install rain

barrels and ensure water delivery for

newly planted trees and larger

shrubs. Simply write a check to St.

Paul’s Episcopal Church, with

―Courtyard Project‖ in the memo line.

Volunteer to work on the courtyard and the front entrance sign: Join

fellow parishioners for a Community

Work Day on Saturday, April 30.
