Good morning, and welcome toWalton Lane for today’s SouthernCombination Football League, Division Twofixture against Ferring. We extend a warm welcome to the visitingplayers, officials and supporters, and tomatch referee, Neal Saxton fromWisborough Green.Another week goes by where we’ve beenforced to play Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday,Saturday as our season draws to a close –although this demanding schedule hasseemingly done little to damage our form, with four SCFL Division 2 wins from the lastfive prior to Thursday’s game at Cowfold. And all the while we’re continuing to strivefor the highest finish we can, there wasalso joy in the semi-final of the League Cupon Tuesday night, with a 2-0 win againstMontpelier Villa.Goals from Nick Edgington and Alex Barnes– his eleventh of the campaign - saw theRobins through to a second-successive finalagainst either AFC Varndeanians or Ferring(played Weds evening), as we look tomaintain the defence of the trophy we won12 months ago, on a fantastic night atPagham, seeing off rivals Sidlesham bythree goals to nil.Do mark your diaries for the final, whichwill take place on Tuesday, May 10 atStorrington FC, 7.15pm k.o.The Rec has previously been a happyhunting ground for Bosham, most notablywinning the Division 3 league cup there in2009/10. A Gary Rowland goal was enoughon the night to beat Haywards Heath Townand secure the ‘double’.

On Wednesday evening, we were able toshowcase our work in the community at theannual Bosham Parish Council Assembly atBosham Sailing Club - alongside othercommunity groups in the village. It was agreat opportunity for people to ask us moreabout our club, and also for us to extendlinks both to other sports clubs, and thepublic. With today being our last senior homegame of the season, I would like to take anopportunity to thank the club’s players andmanagement – at all levels – committeeand volunteers, our loyal sponsors, and you,our support for helping us work towardsanother successful season both on-and-offthe pitch. We still have the matter of another leaguegame after today on Saturday (May 7)against Ifield (playing at AFC Roffey), priorto our cup final on 10th.And don’t forget our real season finale – theclub presentation evening at the Village Hallon Saturday, May 21 from 7.30pm (Tickets£3 & £2 on the night, smart dress code).Of course for those behind the scenes, thework never really stops in the close season. We’re embarking on a pitch renovation tobe carried out at the end of May to get theWalton Lane ‘carpet’ back for the start of2016/17 – our 115th year. The League dinner, club AGM, sponsorshipand insurance renewals, affiliations, pre-season training and friendly preparations, kit ordering, new external storage and anew bar shutter are just some of the thingshappening to keep the club ticking over.We have also been nominated for a coupleof awards, so hopefully we’ll hear moreabout those in due course – keep up to dateover the summer by checking us on Twitter@BoshamFC or visit the website,www.BoshamFC.co.uk.Bar is open, with hot and cold refreshmentsfrom the kitchen, too. Enjoy the game andthank you for your support!

Southern Combination Football LeagueDivision 2 Cup – Semi-Final

By Alan Price

Following a thoroughly entertaining homewin at the weekend against Cowfold,Bosham took their recent excellent form intothis week’s Division Two Challenge Cup SemiFinal against Montpellier Villa. In the recent encounter in the league,Bosham had let slip a four goal lead beforesnatching a late winner, but on this occasionthere was to be no lapse in form as themighty reds moved on to a second, consecutive cup final and one step closer toa possible - and memorable - cup defence. Both sides were nervy at the outset at a coldand cloudy Shooting Field - the home ofmatch hosts, Steyning Town - and the firstgoal would be key to the momentum of thematch. After twelve minutes the reds edged in frontthanks to the redoubtable Nick Edgington.Graeme Dowden menaced down the righthand side and with excellent vision pickedout a sublime ball into the heart of the Villabox and Edgington stretched a leg to pokethe ball under the on rushing keeper, JamesMcKemey.Villa, for their part, showed no fear andcame straight back at the reds in search of aleveller but the Robins defence was on top

form and restricted the blue and whites tosporadic efforts from distance that al flewwide of the mark and thus failed to testKieran Magee between the sticks. Both George Hatton and Todd Brennanlooked sharp up front but struggled to findthe quality in the final third of the pitchleaving Bosham management to applaud thefaultless work by the likes of Callum Fewell,Pat Bulbeck and Neil Redman. After the interval the Villa came on strongagain, trying to catch Bosham with an earlysucker punch but early efforts from ShaunJepson and substitute Simon Whitney wereeasily dealt with by Magee. Then, just before the hour, Bosham foundthe cushion of a second goal to furtherstrengthen their grip on the game when AlexBarnes broke free of a woeful offside trapand easily slotted passed McKemey. Thanks must go to captain, James Wilson, forthe superbly directed through ball that setthe diminutive striker on his path towardgoal with the inevitable result.Bosham then made some late substitutions, with the upcoming league game on Thursdaypartly on the mind, and Louis Bell, DaveBryant and Ryan Hillier all got their chance toshine in what remained in the tie.Villa visibly tired in the closing minutes andBosham could have added to their tally butthe result was never really in doubt, and sothe reds could celebrate at the final whistlehaving secured a safe passage to a secondconsecutive cup final to be played atStorrington on the 10th May against eitherAFC Vardeanians or Ferring.Bosham: Magee, Bulbeck, Redman, Fewell,Docherty, Wilson, Edgington, Barnes, Storey,Giambelardini, Dowden. Remarkable story featuring three of Bosham’scurrent squad!By Neil Allen – Portsmouth News(original from 23/04/16)As the relationship began to disintegrate, MilanMandaric confronted Harry Redknapp over hisrecruitment policy.‘You want to buy more players? Why don’t youcoach the ones you have got?,’ asked Pompey’sowner in May 2004.His flow continued: ‘What about these Portsmouthschoolboys, I hear they want to play here, what arethey like?’Blues boss Redknapp reacted with a shrug of theshoulders and replied: ‘I haven’t seen them’.Mandaric responded: ‘Well, who is this bloke Bryantrunning the team?’Pompey’s owner was referring to Graham Bryant, aPE teacher at St Edmund’s Catholic School. The 54-year-old from Copnor would retire from theprofession two years later, but at that moment wasbeing lauded in the Fratton Park corridors of powerfor leading Portsmouth Schools to national glory.‘Jim Smith told us that story about Milan and Harry’sargument, although I’ve never found out if it wastrue,’ reminisced Bryant.‘I’d like to think it is, Jim was Harry’s assistant at thetime and one day repeated it to Louis Bell while inhis taxi. I can imagine it was accurate becauseRedknapp didn’t even come to the second leg of thefinal at Fratton Park!’The aforementioned Bell was an under-12s coach atPompey’s Centre of Excellence and a former StEdmund’s pupil of Bryant.Their paths again crossed more than two decadeslater when Bell’s son, also called Louis, enrolled atthe Arundel Street school. And so began the double act which would, in youthfootball terms, give Portsmouth its only championsof England.Next week marks 12 years since Portsmouth Schoolscaptured the prestigious English Schools’ FootballAssociation’s Under-15 Inter Association Trophy. It remains the sole occasion in the competition’scontinuous 112-year existence the city has hoisted italoft.Bell senior added: ‘We had a parents’ evening and, knowing plenty of the lads through my work withLandport, I told Graham their football team wouldbe cracking.‘The school never really had a strong side until thatpoint because they didn’t own any playing fields.‘The problem was there was no Portsmouth

Schools under-15s team – so I volunteered to becoach. Needing a teacher to be involved, Grahamtook charge as manager.‘We were up and running. Graham laughed when Itold him we would win it. We did, though!’St Edmund’s formed the backbone of that successfulsquad, supplying Stephen Horsley, Jason Prior, BillyHuntley, James Wilson, Dex Boyle and, of course, Belljunior. The city had eight schools for Bryant and Bell toselect from, making it among the smallest authoritiesin the country.Regardless, their journey took them to the finalagainst Bishop Auckland, with a first leg at DurhamCity attended by 1,800.Skipper Tom Roberts netted the only goal of thegame and Portsmouth headed into the Fratton Parksecond leg with a prized lead.Bryant said: ‘We’d actually missed the deadline toregister for the competition – but still applied.‘Then Bristol dropped out at the last minute and wewere in. You could say our name was on the cup!‘I was retching in the toilets before the game atBishop Auckland, I was so nervous we were going toget hammered.‘Our team was full of good players, there were nostars.‘Billy Huntley was on the books of Southampton andonce told me: “I don’t think I’m going to get myscholarship, they have got someone better than me”.‘Well, he was right, he wasn’t kept on – and thestriker he talked about was Theo Walcott!‘Jake Thomson was also at Southampton and it wasthrough their links which led to the offer of St Mary’sfor our home leg, as Pompey were being difficult!‘Peter Storrie had told us: “Nobody plays on FrattonPark unless it’s our first team”. So Louis got Jim Smithto have a word and they soon realised the publicity ofplaying at St Mary’s wouldn’t have been good. Wepaid all costs, including for the Tannoy and gatemen.‘Around 3,500 fans turned up to cheer us on and thekick-off had to be delayed for 10 minutes to cope.’According to Bell senior, it wasn’t only Southamptonwho offered to stage that second leg, Anfield wasalso mooted – despite Liverpool not even in the final.‘As the first side through, we were given homeadvantage for the second leg,’ said the ex-taxi driver‘Before Liverpool played Bishop Auckland in the othersemi-final, their manager wanted a favour.‘He called me and said: “Can we swap venues? We’resupposed to be at Anfield in the first leg but I thinkwe’re going to win it and it would be nice to do it infront of our own fans”.

Page 17: v FERRING Southern Combination Football League Division ... · Southern Combination Football League. Division Two. Bank Holiday Monday, May 2, 2016. 11.00am k.o. CLUB SPONSOR

I replied: “Hold on a minute, you aren’t even in thefinal”. His reply was: “That’s a formality”.‘Well, Liverpool went on to batter Bishop Auckland– only to lose to an 89th-minute goal!‘Don’t worry, I phoned him back!’It was Bell junior who would net the winning goalon that glorious Fratton Park occasion on theevening of April 27, 2004.The striker on Pompey’s books latched on to MattDocherty’s stoppage-time clearance and raced halfthe length of the pitch to net in front of the FrattonEnd for an aggregate 2-0 success.Unfortunately for Bell, he was released at the endof his scholarship three years later, along withteam-mates Ray Rogers and Roberts.Almost 12 years on and the majority of thattriumphant squad no longer play footballcompetitively. There are exceptions, Docherty and Wilson are atBosham, Roberts turns out for Bemerton HeathHarlequins and Sean Howe is at Fareham Town.Thomson appeared 16 times for Southamptonbefore representing Bournemouth, Torquay andExeter in the Football League. Today he is with theHawks. Another who reached the professional rankswas Jason Prior, with AFC Wimbledon. A defensivemidfielder and reserve keeper 12 years ago, he hasscored 151 goals in 215 games for current clubBognor. As for the much-travelled Bell junior, he ispresently with Bosham.

‘Not a lot of them are playing any more, some haveeither jacked it in or are turning out in Saturdayfootball,’ said the 27-year-old.‘Many of us still keep in touch, though. Myself, MattDocherty and Stephen Horsley help James Wilson runMeon Milton under-sevens.‘That final doesn’t seem like 12 years ago. I stillremember that ball being cleared and runningtowards the keeper, who was way back on his line.‘I had ages and looked down – the next time I lookedup he was right on me, but I scored!‘We knew each other as kids, had grown up togethereither on the same side or as opponents, andpossessed a real togetherness.‘That is how we won it.’ The following year aPortsmouth Schools under-15 team was unable todefend the title, increased school commitmentsdictating Bryant could no longer spare the time.Bell volunteered to stay on, yet without a teacher toassist it was decreed the side could not compete. The under-15s do remain, however, and lastSaturday beat Aldershot 5-2 to reach the PickfordShield final, with Bryant refereeing. After leavingteaching in 2006, he spent five years as a conciergeat the Meon Valley Marriott Hotel & Country Club inShedfield. Now aged 66, he is chairman of Peter Ashley ActivityCentres at Fort Purbrook and Fort Widley.Bell is presently boss of Hampshire Premier Leaguetable-toppers Baffins Milton Rovers.
