Is Fly Fishing Really Growing as Fast as They Say?STEVE JONES, PRESIDENT

It is a fact that fly fishing is growing faster than at any other time in history. According to the 2019 Outdoor Foundation Report, fly fishing has been growing at an annual rate of nearly three percent, but it is still only a fraction as popular as spin fishing. Why is that?

Well, I have been reading about the recent influx of millennials who have been looking to disconnect with their daily routine, and reconnect with nature. They are saying that the millennials are finding their way to fly fishing through social media. They are saying that there is a growing trend of young people looking for something deeper than a vacation, something which slows their fast-paced lifestyle and has a connection with people and the outdoors, but without a phone signal. A few are getting involved in the sport because they grew up

with a father, brother or grandfather who was an avid fly fishermen, though many who grew up with a fly fisherman in their family have written off the sport, shunning the elitism that they feel goes along with it.

Many now are discovering the freedom of being out on the river, listening to the sounds of the water and the birds. They have found that fly fishing is the perfect antidote to the sterile and hectic city life. Once they get their feet wet in the sport they find that an entire lifestyle and world exists that cannot be mastered in their lifetime.

There are so many cool and interesting things to learn! It's such an awesome way to slow down and clear the head! There is something indescribable about seeing a trout slowly rise and eat a dry fly on a beautiful stretch of river.

Well, we have seen our numbers at the Long Beach Casting Club remain close to the same levels as before the pandemic. We are pretty happy about that because we had worried our numbers were going to dip, but we have not seen the growth with the younger generation that has been mentioned in the articles I have been reading. Why is that?

The Board has been discussing this issue recently.Maybe it’s because we need some help with our social media? Maybe it’s because our website needs updating? Maybe it’s because we have not been as inviting as we should have been?

We need our members to help us grow the Club. Our goal is to grow the Club and to keep this wave moving

Second Year for the Zoom Fly Tying Demo a Success!WAYNE SAKAGUCHI, MEMBER

Weeks One and Two of the Zoom Demos have been a success. We’ve had 30+ participants

and 12 volunteers. Starting at 6:30 pm, we’ve been able to answer questions and give additional instruction in the magic of fly tying. Our breakout rooms with the volunteers give the participants a chance to ask questions for the Fly of the Week.

Week Two, the Ant, is the first chance for the participants to start tying. It’s a simple-looking fly, but it's difficult to tie and requires good thread control. The fly in the photo was tied by eight-year- old Sierra, our youngest participant this year. She has set the bar high. It’s great to hear that our videos, made by Dan Oliver, are detailed and easy to follow.

Thank you to all the volunteers, and we are looking forward to continuing to help out.

before the hectic holiday season starts. We will have live holiday music, a social hour with hors d’oeuvres before dinner and a raffle. It is a fun time to connect with old friends and make a few new ones. If you purchase your tickets in advance (before 11-22-21) the price is $25.00 for adults and $10.00 for children under the age of twelve. If you buy your ticket after November 22nd the cost is $30.00 for adults and $15.00 for children. If you plan to come, it is extremely helpful for us if you purchase your tickets in advance, so we can better plan the amount of food we will need to buy and prepare. Buying in advance will also save you money.

Annual Clubhouse CleaningSTEVE HIGASHI, FACILITIES & POND CHAIR

With the end of the year and the Venison Stag dinner approaching, it's time for the annual

cleaning of our Clubhouse. The Venison Stag dinner is one of the more significant events held at the Clubhouse during the year. A clean clubhouse will greatly contribute to a successful Venison Stag dinner, and to start off the new year with a clean clubhouse will be a great way to get back to the events and activities of the Club.

Participation in events such as Clubhouse cleaning is a way to give service to our Club, get involved with our Club and meet fellow members. For those planning to participate, it will be helpful if you can bring gloves, rags, buckets, stepladders and your mask.

This year's annual cleaning is scheduled for SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2021 at 8:00 AM.

Heaters Needed for Venison Stag - 12/4/2021LONG BEACH CASTING CLUB MANAGEMENT

This year, the Venison Stag will feature limited seating on the Clubhouse porch. Portable heaters

are needed, propane or electric, to warm diners on the Clubhouse porch during this event.

The Venison Stag is a great way to meet Club members and tell others about your latest fishing trip, including the one that got away. Most of all, a prime rib dinner will be prepared by the Club's award-winning chef, John Lincoln, and expert sous chef Dan Luas.

Northern California Steelhead Trip RecapMARC BONVOULOIR, 2ND VICE PRESIDENT

While the fishing wasn’t superhot, the Northern California steelhead trip did produce one of

the biggest fish I have ever seen: a 12-pound, 31- inch buck that took member Tim Griffith 15 minutes to land. Fly Shop guide Matt Dahl said it was the fish of the year so far. He was shaking as he released the beast, saying “I need to get a bigger net!”

12 members headed up the I-5 freeway to Redding, and found out quickly that the Lower Sacramento River was blown out, due to the intense rains over the past three weeks. It seems the three rivers that feed into Shasta Lake—the upper Sacramento, the Pit and the McCloud— flooded and brought so much silt into the lake that, in a week, it made its way to the dam and into the lower river. No one was complaining, as the area desperately needed precipitation, but our fishing options were reduced to the Klamath and the Trinity, which were clear and full of fish.

What makes this trip special is the variety of waters we fish. The plan over the last three years was to fish the lower Sac on the first day, to get numbers of fish. While it doesn't yield the number of fish caught on the Green River, the lower Sac can produce decent numbers of fish per angler. The next day is dedicated to finding steelhead which, as everyone knows, are difficult to find and catch.

This year we were relegated to finding quality steelhead, and the numbers showed it. No more than three or four were caught per angler each day. Many half-pounders and smolts were caught, but that’s the name of the game. Most fished the Trinity both days, but Colin and Chad Kumabe hit the Klamath on Sunday and caught a decent number of half-pounders. Luckily we fished between storms, but the weather and waters were cold. Each night we dined at a

different restaurant and told stories from the day. All in all, a fun trip to finish the 2021 year.

Two Rods, 100 Flies Later...Ouch!COLIN KUMABE, PAST PRESIDENT

It still hurts a week after my two fly rods and 100 flies were left at the Cabo Airport. Just a friendly

warning that other countries will likely have different policies on hand-carrying fly rods and flies.

Last week, I fished in the Cabo San Lucas area. Fishing was great, including about an hour of fishing from shore, where my son caught a tiny roosterfish on a fly.

Everything at the hotel and fishing charter went better than expected, including hand-carrying my fly rods and flies from LAX to the Cabo airport on American Airlines. One hour before the return flight, the security screener at the Cabo airport told us the fly rods (4-piece) and flies (largest size 2/0, mostly size #6) were not allowed as carry-ons. We then tried to check the rods and flies. The American Airlines ticket agent told us that we were too late. The agent then told us that the other options were to leave the rods and flies (in the trash?), or stay in Cabo three more nights to get on the next available flight (recall the American Airlines flight cancellations announced October 30).

Fly of the Month: BWO & Zebra Midge KlinkhamerJOHN VAN DERHOOF, PAST PREZ & TARGET TALK HELPER BOY…

It's that time of year again, when the Long Beach Casting Club begins to turn eyes, hearts and ambitions towards the dusty town of Bishop, and the trout lurking in the depths of the Owens River. Now these are

winter trips—January, February and March—so the "Fly du Jour" is usually fished wet, deep and with weight, but there are always opportunities to break out a dry. There are really only two bugs out there crazy enough to emerge at this time of the year. Yup, our old friend the BWO (Blue-Winged Olive) and the midge. The perfect fly choice for both of these is the venerable Klinkhamer.

Hans van Klinken's Klinkhamer (yeah, there is only one 'M' in the name) has been around for years, but I am amazed that more of us don't use it. Maybe it's because it is a parachute, and they can be a bit more intimidating to tie. But, seriously, a parachute ain't that hard, and the result is an excellent floating and highly visible fly that fish love. Besides, I just showed all of you how to tie one at our last monthly meeting. You didn't watch? Tsk, tsk, and I'm hurt, but you'll find a link on how to watch that program on Page Three of this edition of Target Talk.

I am offering another 'twofer' this month, with two patterns in one edition. However, what is really nice is that both patterns are the same: you only need to change sizes, thread color and ribbing color to create either one. Another great thing is that if you have difficulty seeing flies on the surface as they float merrily along, you can easily use bright-colored posts on either of these to help make them more visible. I will also suggest that you tie some with a black post. After the sun goes down, with nothing but the afterglow illuminating the water's surface, seeing light-colored objects becomes almost impossible. An all black or even just a mostly black fly will pop out on a water surface that looks like a river of mercury.

So tie up a few in a couple of sizes and keep 'em stashed away for the hatch that will eventually pop out. The Klinkhamer is a fly you won't regret having!

Instructions for Tying the Klinkhamer:

1 Let's start by placing your hook in the vise. Now attach the thread using a Jam Hitch behind the space we leave behind for the head. Wind down the shank a short distance to where the back end of the thorax would be—about the length of the straight section of this hook's shank (Daiichi 1167). I like to keep the bodies slender on these flies because I want the hook bend and the body to sink slightly, so I am going to tie in my ribbing here. This will minimize lumps or extra layers of thread.

2 Wind the thread down around the curved portion of the hook about 2/3 of the way. Be careful to cover the wire ribbing with smooth connecting wraps while doing this. Counter spin your thread, keep it nice and flat, and wind back up to where you tied in the ribbing. Wind the ribbing with nice evenly spaced wraps—usually 4-6 turns, depending on size. Tie off the wire and worry/helicopter off the remainder. This method leaves fewer sharp edges that could easily cut your thread.

3 Here's where we start the parachute process, and it really isn't that tough. Select a small amount of Triggerpoint fibers about 3" long and lay them flat on top, at the midpoint of the shank. Make two wraps around the post material, turn it 90° and wind twice more in the opposite direction, making 'X' wraps, and you have a spinner wing. Grab both ends of the post and pull them straight up into a vertical position. Wind six or seven times up the post and a similar number back down.

4 Select a nice quality dry fly hackle, about the same size as the hook or one size larger. Remove the lower barbs with list leaving a bare rachis/stem. Now hold the hackle together with the post. Make sure that a small amount of the bare stem is above the highest thread wrap on the post. Bind the hackle down around the hook shank in front of the post, and then start winding your thread up the post again, just as you did before. Once you get to the uppermost wrap, start winding back down and

continue to wind to the eye of the hook. YES, ignore the head space—you won't need it!!!

5 All right, here is the one time in your fly-tying life where you can do the forbidden. Select your dubbing and apply it to your thread. With the dubbing noodle prepared, wind from the eye of the hook back to the post and behind it. Wind enough of the dubbing to create a football shaped thorax. Finish the dubbing with your winding thread behind the wing.

6 Start winding your hackle from high to low around the post. Remember that you bound the rachis to the post base, and it is at or above the highest turns of threads. Four or five turns of hackle should suffice. With the hackle on the front side of the hook, carefully tie off the hackle, using three or fourturns around the base of the post. Be careful not to wind over too many of the hackle barbs, causing them to splay in odd directions.

7 Almost done…tilt your vise forward so that the hook shank is pointing down. If your vise does not tilt simply take the hook out of the vise jaws and reinsert it with the shank pointing down. Using your hands or a tool, whip finish about three or four turns around the base of the post, between the hackle and the thorax, and cut away your thread. Hey, you're done! Now go fish…

Fly Tying Tip:Full Feather Mounting IIDAVE BOYER, MEMBER

Last month I discussed how to flatten the feather rachis to mount your feather on the side or top of

the hook shank. What happens if you need to mount two feathers at the top of your hook (graphic-1, graphics courtesy of John Van Derhoof)?

If we mount them side by side on a curved shank hook, they will cant off into a ‘V’ and not be perfectly vertical (photo-1, focus is at leading edge of feathers).

John Van Derhoof reminded me in this case, as you flatten the rachis, to put a slight twist (graphic-2) to the rachis as you flatten it, so a feather will mount just off the top center of the hook shank (graphic-3 and photo-2), keeping the feathers perfectly vertical. This works on tails or on full feather wings.

Again, don’t fight your material, make it work for you. Keeps your frustration levels lower with streamer flies!! Give it a try.
